White/Silver spots on anodized metal of the phone ?! - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

I have a normal TPU cover on my OP5.
Recently i have seen that there are some white/silver spots forming on the back and sides of the phone [ on the anodized metal obviously ].
Checked out a thread on the OP forums with some people having this same issue.
On the forums one of the theory is that the dust gathered under the cover is getting some reaction with the anodized metal whilst the phone is charging [ as the phone obviously heats up ].
The other theory is that the heat is directly giving some reaction as the metal is not anodized properly.
All in all, i am clueless about it.
Anyone care to shed any insight on the same ??
P.S. The photos might not be that clear, but those spots are pretty clear when the light hits them in a certain angle.

that's dust getting between the amodized part and the device. most likely caussed by a case or a pouch. even iphones suffer from that issue. heck, every amodized devices is

Most probably the case you're using. Had the same issue while I used a full case like that with continuous blemishes at the edges on the bottom of the device. Using slim cases kinda solved the issue.

Discoloration

Have any of you experienced any discoloration on the soft "rubber" like portions of the G2? I'm always really careful with the phone, and it's in a leather case full-time. However, I just noticed that I've got a black mark on the bottom of my phone; looks like the finish is wearing off.
I started getting a black mark on mine (before I got my replacement). I attributed it to the black dye on the inside fabric from my Cellet holster. I could get it off either.
I have since gotten a replacement (for a different issue), applied a full body skin, and switched to a holster with a grey interior.
The soft molded plastic parts of my phone are turning a yellowish green. It is happening most around the volume rocker and power switch. There's a topic at the T-Mobile forums about this. One person posted pictures of their phone and it is really bad.
A lot of other G2 owners are reporting the same thing.
I remember a while back someone posted pics of their brand new replacement G2 next to their used G2 and a lot of people commented on the color difference, wondering if something changed between the newer models. But it looks like these phones discolor badly after a while.
This sucks.
I had returned a G2 that turned a little greenish on me. I think it happened when I placed My G2 on top of my hot computer. I would also keep it away from heat and harsh chemicals such as alcohol.
I received a replacement one, and I installed zagg full body invisible shield on it.
Hmm. I don't have mine in a case.. Its usually in my hand, my front pocket (alone) it sitting on my desk or a table. I've not noticed any color issues. Sounds like the cases are doing it. Planning on getting Invisible shield put on mine but wondering if it makes it harder to hold on to? Too slick? I like the kind rubbery feeling, makes it stick in my hand better.

The invisible shield fullbody has a glossy film. If your hands are oily it will feel a little slippery. The it covers the G2 about 95%. The only part uncovered is the gray area around the keyboard.
The screen protector included with the invisible shield is terrible. There are some indention marks on the film from coins and pens on my pocket. It is scratch proof but not wrinkle or dent proof. If viewed on an angle, It makes me want to rip off the screen protector. I prefer the kinda matte finish screen protector that you could get from tmobile.
In addition, I would also avoid the black rubber snap on case you get from tmobile. The back case is so thick that the opening for the camera act as a funnel for keys and coins. I had a nasty horizontal gash on my camera screen on my first G2.

I was the one that posted those pictures.
Does any one know any way to go about getting a replacement, I was an early adopter and pre ordered mine on sept 27th... and received it October 1st. My remorse period has passed a while ago and anyway I only started noticing this problem after my remorse period ended.
My hinge is okay and the random reboots were solved with the update. There are really no complaints besides this ridiculous discoloration.

I've noticed with my friend's G2, I got mines a week later, put the full body sealth sheild on it and mines not wearing out but his looks lighter than mine. And also he doesn't seem to have the yellow spots next to his keyboard while I do. WTF?
For anyone experiencing this issue a fix:
Take some q-tips, a cap of bleach, and a cap of hydrogen peroxide.
Dip a q-tip in the bleach cap, and blot it on a napkin. Rub the q-tip on the discolored rubberized parts of the phone, and let it dry. Take another q-tip, and dip in the hydrogen peroxide, and blot on a napkin. Rub the q-tip on the discolored rubberized parts of the phone.
Rinse, and repeat the procedure above until you are satisfied with the result. You should begin to notice that the "rubberized" parts of the phone you are working with will feel more "rubbery" again, instead of smooth.
Buy yourself a case for your G2, a screen protector, and enjoy.

[Q] Screen affected by magnet?

I have magnetic flap case on my phone, which I've used for the last year. Even though the magnets are not supposed to affect the screen I have a crescent shaped mark on my screen right where the magnet is, and the mark is under the Zagg protector. It looks like a dark smudge though it's not real noticeable.
I think it's from the phone coming on while in the case. I bought the phone barely used a year ago and I inspected it closely then. I don't recall seeing this until recently.
Anyone seen such a thing happen?
It could be the magnet affecting the screen, or it could be the magnet and the button were making pressure on the screen. Try to not use that case for a while, it may go away.
(I remember those old TVs which used to have a purple smudge on them when you close a magnet)
Yes, I've got a new case coming. Until it gets here I'll put the phone in the present case backwards. Thanks!

Frost Anodized Coating Chipping Off Plastic Antenna Band

I've had my Frost Nexus 6P in either the Google Carbon Case or the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Case since I got it.
It's possible this was there from the beginning - I don't think it was, but I just noticed it now, and only because I was looking through the clear side of the Spigen Ultra Hybrid.
I just noticed that on the upper left corner of the device, on the side (frame) between the chamfered edges, the white anodizing has started chipping off of the plastic antenna strip.
You can feel a recess there now and see the bare plastic.
Only about a quarter of the part of the plastic strip that's coated is chipped right now, but I can see a hairline crack in the anodizing along the base of the strip.
I feel like it's an issue of the anodizing not properly coating the plastic antenna band and then chipping.
If I had ever dinged the corner off something, oh well, things happen.
But I haven't.
I know it's a small issue, but I'm picky, I've been babying the device, and it seems like it should be a warranty issue.
So, I did the request-a-callback thing on the Google support part of the Google store, and talked to a guy who seemed pretty nice and sounded pretty sure they would replace it for me under warranty.
If I had just been let down at that point, I probably wouldn't be so frustrated right now. But he genuinely had me thinking I'd be getting a warranty replacement.
Then I get an e-mail back.
Nope.
"Cosmetic issues that happen through normal use or even accidental bumps or drops are not covered under the limited warranty on the device."
I've been arguing back and forth because it seems pretty clear to me the anodizing is flaking/chipping/peeling off specifically from the plastic antenna band.
Just frustrated that I've been taking such damn good care of the phone, and then I notice this.
And then get my hopes up on the phone I'll get a replacement only to be told No in an e-mail.
I'm a curious if anyone else has a similar issue (possibly that they haven't even noticed yet).
The only things I've seen in searching are mainly issues of the Graphite coating coming off on the back or around the edges of the camera glass.
Also, from my understanding the Graphite and Aluminum don't have the anodized coating over the plastic antenna bands, but the frost does for some reason.
This seems like a good reason why.
I'm curious, though, what does the band feel like on the Graphite and Aluminum?
Is it coated with anything there or is the plastic bit slightly indented?
I've got a noticible indentation I can feel with my fingernail now where it's chipped.
I completely understand your problem I just looked at mine and saw that it is happening on all four corners where the bands are for the antenna I don't have any chipping but there is a clear break it or crack line on all four trying to get ahold of Google to see what they will do I will report back

Build Quality Issues, Back Aluminum scrapping off

each time I take my nexus 6p out of Spigen Rugged Armor case I am noticing tiny white dots which appears to be metal scrapping off from back and there are no signs of physical damage at all. device never dropped and I never keep it without case.
Please advise how to prevent and fix this issue and if anyone else is also facing the similar issue.
Your case is the exact reason for it happening. I used my 6p for like 3 months completely naked and it was in perfect condition. As soon as i started using case scratches began showing up on the back. The way i see it, some particle of dust or dirt gets inside the case, and because its so tight, its able to actually scratch the surface of metal.
Yes, its lint, dirt between the case and with the pressure like being in your pocket, I don't have a hard case so its not a big issue,
Should of gotten the aluminium version if it worried you.or get a skin wrap to add another layer.
I take my phone out and clean the case often. Being transparent I can see when it needs a clean.
This has never happened to my earlier phones, metal quality is really bad on this phone, best quality cases are causing issues, if i keep it woth case it'll turn into a dented metal piece in no time

First of all its not bending, its scratching the paint. Metal is fine, its the paint. Secondly just sell it if its such a big deal to you. Happened many times to me on different devices, nature of alluminium.
I have used my earlier phones for 3-4 years and they still don't have any visible scratches and nexus 6p being a premium phone has visible marks in just 4 months with gentle use and no falls, this is what i am not liking about this
Maybe you didnt use metal phones then? Cause i had htc one m8 which had briliant build quality, and sadly it was same story, full of scratches, because alluminium. Tho it wasnt visible so well, cause of silver color.
I experienced the same with a black One M7, and noticed the same with friends' iPhone ( except for the 6S' aluminum which is more durable).
Therefore I got a Silver 6P and only use Google's soft case when going to the seaside. No chipping on the back or sides, so far.

My experience on water

So
I usually wash my phone once in a while but this time I don't know what happened after washing my phone lost reception and I know something was wrong and I also noticed some water has seeped into the phone top right corner and I made sure the flaps were closed. I switched off the phone and kept the phone to dry and after about 6 hours switched on and I noticed it has become better but battery started heating too much I thought its the end of my phone, but later it was fine
But the water mark still persist on the display but it's fine as long as the phone works perfect .
What portion of the screen is watermarked?
I have two Z2's and on both of them the rear glass has began to separate slightly from the frame adjacent to the USB socket. It's the same place on both of them and can be felt by running a fingernail across the glass to the frame edge; the raised part of the frame can be felt more around the rest of the glass than it can near to the USB socket.
Once a week I carefully heat the rear glass slightly then clamp the phone between a wood/foam sandwich for an hour, it helps keep the glass more firmly attached. It's crazy that I have to do that on a high-end phone, it's definitely a design flaw.
I also wash them with warm water and have had no problems so far.

The top right corner
It's definitely cured although the mark is slightly visible
Am not dipping/washing this phone again
So that's the opposite side to the USB socket.
Maybe a leak from the sd card cover or the camera lens.
A good cleaning medium is glass cleaner spray, a little on a rag works well for removing all fingerprints and marks, then a buff with a microfiber cloth will bring it up like new.
I spilled a non conductive heptane based chemical on my phone by accident, sadly if something leaks even for a little they will ruin the screen mostly, i have a ugly "watermark" too on the right side too, glad im going to buy the XZ the next month.

Yeah it could be
If the leak occured through the camera lens, isn't the camera lens supposed to look hazy/moisture ?

How do you heat the rear glass? I have the same problem, but when using the phone with a case on it the glass doesn't come off.
I use a heatgun on a low setting.
The glass hasn't separated yet, it's more like the beginning of separation, so I'm trying to keep it in check.
Regarding the lens, if you managed to totally dry your phone I think the lens would look normal and clear.
Also I've looked at some internal pics of the Z2 and the area where the rear glass is starting to separate corresponds with the two NFC spring contacts on the motherboard.
I've bought my Z2 in 06/14 and I wash it with soap and warm water once a week since then.
Had no problems at all. :good::fingers-crossed:
SONY is the best. I don't think I'll ever buy a NON-waterproof phone.
