I'm very confused with my wife's N4. "Google Services" has used ~1.5GB of data in the last 3 days. My wife uses her phone for facebook and texting. She doesn't have any data heavy apps. Any ideas on what do to stop this from continuing?
Maybe try turning off location services or maybe try backing up everything and do a factory reset?

That was my next option, but I'd rather not have to go through that. Anyone else have anything? Are there apps that could tell me which "google service" was the data hog?

I am having the same problem. I just tried disabling app data sync under Google account settings. Let's see if that helps... I use Titanium backup to back up apps and app data anyways...

I tried doing that, and disabiling background data for it through battery manager, but that eliminates all google sync. I eventually just backed things up and moved on to a newer rom. Like I said, it is my wife's phone and didn't feel like trying to figure out the root cause. If it were my phone, I'd be more patient. Hopefully you can find an answer. 500MB a day is nuts. Glad we're on "unlimited" with StraightTalk.
My brother and I just got the same problem as well. He has been on Paranoid for over 3 months and just yesterday Google Services used up 1.5gb out of no where (in a few hours). Just today, im on Carbon, my Google Services used up 500mb (in a few hours). Thankfully, I noticed that my battery was going too fast so I went in and turnd off background data for Google Services.
Any one have an idea of what is going on?
I noticed this problem on my phone a couple of weeks ago and asked about it here. Unfortunately no one knows what's really going on.

System Update Issue
I've noticed this same issue since i updated all my Google Play applications last 07/30. Before the update, I did not have this high bandwidth consumption.
Anyways, i've been researching in my phone and tried the following solutions:
First, I restricted Google Services background data, this did not work, it was still consuming my data. So I kept researching and found something interesting, i went to About Phone - System Update, and noticed my phone was consistently trying to update to 4.3 JB (which is 183 MB), and after the download was complete, then a "verification failed" error message was displayed.
At this point, i thought, This is probably the cause i've been losing all of my data. I am running ParanAndroid along with franco kernel for some time, maybe this is the reason the update is failing.
So, a rough solution i did to this meanwhile: Go to Settings -> Apps -> All and disable Google Services Framework, this will ensure that the update is not constantly being downloaded, however, many Google applications will have issues.
Guys I am facing such extremely annoying Google Services (DownloadManager in BBS) battery drain + mobile/wifi data usage issue and I have been searching for some hours.
First of all I have tried the most answered solution - clearing the data of all those stuffs related to Google Services - well it did not work so well.
Then I don't think freezing download manager / factory reset / restrict background data / disabling google services framework are good solutions as I myself did not make changes related to this recently so a factory reset should not be needed, plus the other mentioned solutions would cause syncing issues with Google and this doesn't suit my lifestyle of heavily depending on various google services.
Many of you have proposed that the massive download / repeated downloads are related to downloading the 4.3 OTA and that might be possible according to the similar file sizes as well as logcats you have found. But on the other hand one of the solution - disabling Network Locations settings has also stopped the "download" triangle from constantly staying there when my wifi is on. Therefore we can conclude that it is partially related to the 4.3 OTA download which cannot be disabled on our custom ROMs, as well as partially about the stock Network Location settings.
Fortunately after many posts that do not provide a feasible answer I have found this xda post which addresses the issue related to the Google Play Store 4.1.6. Some of the users have reported that 4.1.10 has fixed the issue and some even said the newest version 4.2.9 is over the internet since 25/7 together with 4.3 update.
Not sure why such critical update did not roll out to the unluckily bunch of us from Google, but I have found the Android Police source about 4.1.10 fixing the "Network Location bug which hogs the battery" and hopefully this will stop the DownloadManager wakelock as well as the crazy battery drain + data drain by Google Services.
I haven't tested this thoroughly because I will probably need a day to check out whether it stops the crazy behaviour but I would just like to share with you guys my founding as soon as possible so you guys can try it out together with me. The latest Google Play Store 4.2.9 apk can be downloaded from Android Police here.
Hope I have helped! Good luck to you and me!

Hi and thanks for sharing your investigation and findings so far. I looked at my Nexus 4 tonight and saw that it had downloaded 500mb over 3G so I disabled it and started searching for an answer. Definitely looks to be the OTA 4.3 issue, but installing Play Store 4.2.9 has done nothing for me. My phone has just sucked down another 500mb over WiFi under the "Google Play Services" heading and shows no signs of stopping.
I'm running CM 10.1 stable - really need a fix for this because otherwise I can't enable 3G without burning my whole quota in short order.
Darn, had this same problem, in one day 500mb over 3G.... Thats not cool.
Recently installed a new ROM, Cyanogenmod 10.1, and I think I found the problem. The gallery app was synching all photo's on my G+ account it seems.
Hope I nailed it, because we just went on holiday today and I need my data for finding information etcetrea. But I think this is it, as I can view photo's from vacations made decades ago whoile phone is in airplanemode...
Hope this helps others with this problem...
This is exactly the root cause. I've just lost a gig on 3G today. I'm on wifi now and update just keeping download & verification fail loop. I'm on PA Rom.

Here's how to disable the OTA download on any ROM
Install Autorun Manager from the Play store.
Then enter its recommended advanced mode.
Go into the settings and enable the following : system entries and system app disable.
Disable com.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService$Reciever under Google Service Framework
It would be great if the OP could be updated with this

You can try this
It is definitely something to do with the 4.3 update. I was on PA 3.6 (Android 4.2.2) and had this problem. After upgrading my phone to Android 4.3 on the latest PA, I no longer have this issue. I think it is a problem in the ROM where they tried to remove the OTA feature, but instead it still tries to download the ROM via 3G in the background. Don't quote me on the above, but that is the only thing that makes sense to me!
Since I've reached my limit for the month (and I'm not even half way through doh), I have had to disable Mobile Data otherwise I would have had a hefty bill come through!
Steph
Guys, Ive seen the other posts, about this issue, and want to know a few things.
First off I am new here, and new to phone programming and general security issues on them as well. So if I jack this up, my bad.
I have a Galaxy Note 2 AT&T SGH-I317 stock (not rooted)
Its running
android 4.1.2 kernel vers 3.0.31
build JZO54K.I317UCAMC3
(before you start with check the other posts, I have tried the reset "power, home and volume button" and chose number 4 to clear all partition cache, also ran in safe mode to see if it was a downloaded app, still didn't work) I also want to know what is causing it, before I do the "applications manager reset all apps" Got a lot of custom settings and items blocked. Don't want to redo all of it.
So as of last night I was disabling some running process in the application manager. I did it by checking on them before. But, its not like I had the OFFICIAL Droid guide to disabling stuff on your Note2. That being said I take care to do it the best I can. Before I disabled each one, I cleared the cache of each one (if it was a option) and unchecked Show notifications. Force stopped them, and disabled each one.
Starting around 2pm CST the next day, my phone started to lock up, messenger will not work, phone app crashes after every call. But I was using it all morning on twitter, and instagram with no issues. And various other will not load etc. What could cause this? and is there a official list of applications for note2 with what they do and what they control.
Short list of disabled applications from last night are
Market Feedback Agent
LogsProvider
Google Play services, and Play store.
Google Partner Setup
DRM Protected Content Storage
DioDict3services (not sure about this one)
com.google.andriod.voicesearch
com.android.providers.partnerbookmarks
Search Applications Provider, (found on android.forms to be ok to disabled)
TopicWall
Thank y'all in advanced.

Is there a way I can save the whole phone on to drive to send to someone to take a closer look to see what virus is on here Im guessing it's a rootkit some how also what way would you run packet capture to see things that way?

a virus would be software related...if you did a full wipe and installed fresh software and it continues it might be an app you keep installing...do you get your apps from the playstore or side load as well

playstore only before my phone was locked boot loader and encrypted to have to use pin to boot device.
AS SOON as i get the buggy phone and reboot when it boots up it no longer request pin to boot. on stock rom i was rebooting phone every week to see how long it would take and usually nothing odd until phone got buggy for reason of the reboot.
the buggy issue is shortly opening an app the app will freeze so i hit home nothing happends try to turn the screen off nothing happends until a minute later sometimes phone will reboot its self or i hold power to make it reboot but both take about same amount of time when phone goes into full freeze.
so it being a playstore app and the virus not getting detected google needs to look into how they can patch this...
so im putting this out there so this person or group doesnt forever have a backdoor into peoples phones.
this issue i have had since november last year but havent been so aware about the issue till august. since august ive been dealing with know some how they are getting in and must be an app but i got rid of all games and weird apps that are not nessisary

these are all the apps ive had since ive had this issue.
i was hopping that esfiles exploreres new feature of being notified of new files would help solve this but some folders it doesnt detect like youtube or google music even though in es files explorer i unlocked ability to view the .nomedia
Drop ES File Explorer, to start. Read this article, or do some googling about it on your own;
https://www.androidpit.com/this-is-why-you-should-not-use-es-file-explorer
I have to agree with the article when it says Solid Explorer is a great replacement. I've used it for years now and it's never let me down.
The fact of the matter is, if you manually wiped all of your phone and formatted your internal storage, nothing remains from pre-wipe. If your issue is coming back it can only be a hardware issue (if applicable) or some app you are using, as previously mentioned.
Furthermore, after googling your exact issue I came to find that certain apps that require 'Accessibility Services' can and will disable your pin/password/pattern on boot. Check if any of your apps fit the bill in 'Settings > Accessibility > Services'
Disable any apps which are enabled and reboot. You may have to set up pin, etc., again, but leave the services disabled and see if the issue returns. Let us know!
Edit: Upon more googling, I've found reports of people who had the issue return after disabling & uninstalling the apps in question as well. You may need to flash stock images again and do not install any apps that require accessibility services, or don't grant any of them permission even once.
Edit2: Just another link to check out;
https://blog.g3rt.nl/android-lollipop-encryption-user-interface-flaw.html
Edit3: Issue tracker link; https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=219498
Edit4: If you logged into your bank app and factory reset or flashed factory images, logging in again after the wipe/flash will show as a new device. Same goes for having login alerts set for Google / Facebook, etc. Your same phone shows as a new device after the flash or wipe. Guaranteed not a virus.

I turned off keeper nothing.

I dont know how to re enable boot encryption pin.
the phone says it is so I'll try clean install again and just not allow keeper anymore I think the issue has come up just after turning keeper on to allow the accessibility features.
Thank you I will keep you informed give it till February if nothing odd happened.

I'm coming from a Nexus 6P, running Oreo. And upon setting up my new Essential phone, the only backup I could chose was from my chromebook. Both my chromebook and Nexus 6P show the backed up data on my Google Drive.
Also, if you go to Settings>Backup&Reset>Google Account: it will show "Back up to Google Drive - disabled by your admin"...
I really want all my old wifi passwords, etc.. can care less about manually selecting apps to install.
I did a quick search, and others with different phones are having the same issue, and supposedly google will fix sep 21st... I'm just curious if this is affecting everyone, or select accounts?
I do not think Oreo back-ups will work with Nougat

I had the same issue. With the help of another XDA member, I determined it was because my XL was on Oreo. I had the option of backing up to my Nougat Pixel non-XL.
This is exactly the problem. Can't restore a newer OS version to an older OS version unfortunately.
Cool, thanks guys. I'll power on one of my other nexus devices and see if they create a backup I can use. I have a Nexus 6 so that should work.
I never got either my 6p or 5x to oreo but still it only gave me one 5x backup with all my apps . Last time I reflashed the 5x I still had 15 from 6p and 5x to choose from.

Yeah I had the same problem, Pixel XL on Oreo and not showing up in my device sync list on the Essential Phone. Luckily if you are setup correctly your Gmail account should sync the wifi passwords and such after login. Just no the very first prompt at setup.
I think you might also need to login to Chrome to let it sync too... I noticed that some things didn't synch right until I used Chrome once.
not to chime in with the same news, but I cam from a GS8 and it wouldn't sync with my messages or anything
Came from a Pixel XL, not on Oreo and having the same issue. Any ideas? I would loved to get my SMSs and Wifi PWs back
Use a SMS backup app on your previous phone. Then bring the file over to your new phone. The WiFi, I got nothin'

I used ADB backup and then used ADB restore for the Essential.
I had to use a back of an old phone then used the ADB restore on top of of that.
Title: Can't update APK's from play-store using cellular since last version - Prior version works.
Thread title: For some reason I can't enter a thread title today, but if I could it'd be this:
It might just be my setup too, but it's the first problem I've had in a long time so I thought I'd ask here: I kind of want to resolve this unless it was done by Google by design and I just can't seem to confirm that:
The problem: Google play store is no longer able to download via cellular connection. I've made certain all settings are correct (download anytime, regardless of wifi state) and I've cleared all data and cache in play store and play store services. I had all APK's up to date and am sure this happened after the last play store update a few weeks ago.
Today I reverted it to one from April and it works fine again with either cellular or WIFI. I don't consider that a fix, just a kludge.
Personally I like updating the play store apps via cellular. If anyone knows of a way to get the current version of play-store to work with cellular I'd appreciate hearing about it. It doesn't seem like it should just be me in this case because reverting to a prior version fixes it so it downloads either WiFi or Cellular.
Thanks in advance
Info of possible use: Using xXx no limits most recent Nougat version. When having problem above, using most recent play-store version. Fixing it just involves rolling back to prior version.
