I don't if I'm the only one. But how do I know if I'm encrypted or not. Can't find an answer for that. Is there anywhere an indicator for that? On security page in settings it says "Encrypt Phone" and nothing else.
So am I decrypted?

With my limited experience, I'd say you are decrypted.
I assume you've formatted your data partition and flashed the no_verity_op5.zip at a minimum to get where you are?
I just did that to my phone so I could try out different roms. I haven't had a chance to do that yet but I did flash OOS 4.5.7 and I'm still decrypted.

In the photo of your device's screenshot, under Encryption heading then Encrypt phone, if you are encrypted, it would say "Encrypted". If you are not seeing this, then you most likely are NOT encrypted. Keep in mind as well that I've seen themes cause issues with certain text, especially for system apps. Not sure if you are using a theme to get the black background, etc, but it could be the text may not show up on a black background if it is there, if it isn't themed/themed correctly to show on a black background. This may not be your case here, just something to be aware of.

will the feature require a certain class speed sd card
Comment 564 by [email protected], Today (28 minutes ago)
@559 - As with any software which needs to do a lot of I/O - the faster the card the
better.
Delete comment Comment 565 by af9210, Today (8 minutes ago)
@564 i understand... do you have knowledge about how it will be implemented..... for
instance do we need to create a separate partition ie ext2 ext4 etc?
Comment 566 by [email protected], Today (1 minute ago)
@565 - We've gone to a lot of effort to ensure you *don't* have to repartition / format your cards for this to work. We coexist with the existing FAT32 partition on the card to ensure compatibility with your existing cards/devices.
sounds pretty good development by the android team huh
sounds good but if i remember correctly the reason the community a2sd devs make it so you have to use an ext partition was to help prevent piracy, and of course have your phone usable when the sdcard was mounted by the pc. i wonder if google came up with a new type of copy protection.

However Ext partitions don't stop you pirating.
I can still get ALL of the installed apps off my phone if I need to and that's using my phone. No special software needed as such (nothing that's not free on the market anyway).
Yup, sounds like a new encryption method.
Yep, noone can boot up an ubuntu cd and mount the ext partition...
More likely it's because fat32 can't handle linux style file permissions.

They could install protected apps onto internal flash - as they do now. Most of apps aren't protected, so we'll still have a lot of additional space.
My theory is that rather than a separate partition, it'll just create a file of xx amount of size on the mem card, then fill it up. It'll probably be somewhat of a safe measure, as it'll most likely be encrypted and of a filetype that isn't common (or it could even be some kind of internal compression method such as zip, but a self written program).
They said they wouldnt do it until they figure out a way to encrypt it.
Ill take it thats what they did.
Yeah, they did say it would not come till they hashed out some piracy measures, not that they will help whatsoever, but they did say that.
I don't understand what the big deal is.
Couldn't they have just done Apps2SD for all free apps and called it a day?
No one is purchasing 500 megabytes worth of apps.
Offloading all the free ones to the SD = BOOM.
Easy and would have absolutely zero consequences on piracy.
Current methods have no consequences on piracy, future methods have no consequences on piracy. Hopefully the gave up worrying about something they can never stop.

That is a very bold statement to make.
Once you can install applications to your sdcard, what's to stop you from purchasing ONE program that is, by itself, 500 MB?
Has anyone encountered a problem as far as apps that are able to move to sd and then disappearing from app menu? As well as icons on homescreen turning to android generic icons? I can still access the apps from homescreen ,manage apps and astro but as i said the icon for the app on the home screen changes to somewhat of a generic looking android icon. One of the apps in question is titanium backup.
Now if i go to manage apps and place apps back to phone everything reappears in its rightful spot. Could it be a temp glitch in froyo? Some setting i might have missed? Any info would be appreciated...thnx
Yes it happened to me, every applications I moved on the sdcard suddenly disappeared from the menu. I had to move one of them on the phone to make them all reappear. As I don't have so much applications installed (~25), I moved them all back to the phone until this is fixed

HI @ all!
Yesterday I tested the erase function on HTCSense.com.
I worked perfetly but erased also my personal data an the sd card like music, videos AND the preinstalled navigation software!
So be careful if u want to check out this feature!!
It´s quite logical that even the data on the sd card will be affected - but I wasn´t aware of that yesterday.
Anybody experienced teh same here?
Greetz!
Yep that's right. Page 166 of the User Manual says:
"... Erasing your phone contents
If there’s no chance of getting your phone back, you can erase the contents of the phone and the installed storage card so no one sees sensitive information on your phone.
There’s no way to recover your phone and storage card data after you erase the contents so be absolutely sure before you proceed.
1. On your computer, open your web browser and sign in to your HTCSense.com account.
2. Click Dashboard.
3. Click Erase Phone.
4. When asked to confirm, click Erase Phone. ..."
My emphasis .....
Dave
Isn't that the whole idea of wiping your phone remotely? ---- to protect your personal data not to be seen/used by the thief. At least you have proved that feature does work properly.
Soooooo...I guess reading the manual has become overrated
I'm sorry, I just had to
Cheers,
M_T_M
Your friendly Mod
No question - thats the idea behind this.
But whats with the navigation software??? Thats not really a "personal information" Thats part of the system I bought...
B.t.w.: The user manual is also wiped... lol!
Data recovery?
It would be interesting to find out just how well the data is erased - is it possible to attempt to recover the data on the SD card using some data recovery software?
I guess the hopeful answer is NO, you shouldn't be able to but it would be good to prove it, unless someone's already researched this?

If you give me a recovery sw, i can test this..
@ M_T_M: n.r.t.f.m.
But I don´t care about the few mp3´s... i care about the navigation!
Can you store locations on the Nav, like where you live? I know TomTom advise against storing your actual 'home' location on the devices, as if it gets stolen then the thief then knows where you live - and they may now know that you aren't home.
I'm more concerned about someone hacking into HTCSense.com and being able to lock my phone, or erase everything off it. I hoped the website would be as secure as a bank website is, instead of just a simple username and password.

Actually maps can tell a lot about you. For one it can give the region of world you are in by the maps you downloaded, but more importantly if you have routes saved, it can give away your address.
Closing thread now....derailing off-topic...
Salutations,

After unsuccefull rooting I can't restore my NST. In partition table I look only 1 - 240MB. "AlfaFormatter" and "n2t-recovery" can't help. May be anyone know more methods?
Thank you
Sounds like you didn't use "Noogie" before you backed up. "Noogie" reveals all the partitions of your Nook, so you can back all of it up. If you back up without using "Noggie," you will only backup the ~250mb of data that are, by default, on the partition titled "NOOK."
Please post again if this explanation was not clear.

Yep, this is a common mistake.
The worst part is that restoring a invalid backup image like that, also overwrites your /rom partition and the rom partition backup zip that resides on partition 3
If this is what happened, then you're out of luck, there's no method that can recover the device.
Ouch! I also, almost, did this, but it seemed too strange to me that the backup should be so small.
On this note--can an admin start to make a few, forum, stickies? I'm surprised that there aren't any already. It would be good for old hands and n00bs alike to have a few, key, threads posted and pinned to the top.
My 2 cents.

So, question:
I just bought a refurb. Started it up and I only have 240MB space so I came here looking for help. Can I assume from this that I should just not even bother with it and should try to get my money back?
Not happy.

That's normal for it to be like that. B&N only gives you a (relatively) small amount of space for side loaded content. I think there's some way to give yourself some more space, but I don't know. Either way, it doesn't affect the rooting process.

Yeah, I know, but thanks. The unit has a lot of issues. I can't successfully get it working. The WiFi won't work either, doesn't have MAC address. I won't call it a brick, but how it got to me as a "factory certified" refurb in this state is beyond me and not worth the trouble. I already got it swapped for a new unit.
Couple of questions.
I use Whatsapp, and a friend sent me an image I didn't want. Use your imagination, but it was very rude. I didn't know what it was, opened it and deleted it straight away when I realised.
So now I have two questions. Will that deleted image be gone from my phone completely? I don't know where he got the picture from, though he says Facebook. Either way, will anything compromising be on my phone now? Do I need to perform a Factory reset to make sure it's completely gone? I don't want anything like that on my phone at all, so want to keep it as clean as possible.
Anything I can do, or will a simple delete be enough to eradicate it? Is my phone clean still? I have avast! installed on my phone as well, though it only scans the apps.

Images sent via Whatsapp are saved in the directory "/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images/". Navigate there with a file explorer and see if it's really deleted. If it is, then it's gone.
If you want a geek answer, then you should know that all data you delete are actually still there. All you've deleted is the reference to the data. Until those memory blocks are physically overwritten, it's potentially possible to retrieve the deleted data. But the procedure is often cumbersome and expensive.

Not sure how the image was "compromising" to begin with.. But typically if you delete a MMS from Whatsapp, it removes it from the phone and its storage directory...

Unfortunately, FBI agents have already hacked into your phone, and used a kernel exploit to receive a continuous stream of your phones activity. They are watching you.
[Q] Keep getting "Internal Storage Space Left" messages-is something being installed?
I noticed that after hitting a certain remaining storage space threshold in Galaxy/android phones, I get an "Internal Storage Space Left: xx GB" everytime I install or update something. That's ok, don't really care about that.
However, starting a few weeks ago, I keep getting this message periodically, multiple times a day, without me explicitly installing or updating anything. Has this happened to anyone else? Is this normal? Any way to find out what's getting installed or updated (if that is what's happening)? When this first started happening, I also got a decline/accept pop-up box asking me if I wanted Google to verify apps (which led me to believe something is being installed). I unchecked the "verify apps" checkbox under security settings so that pop-up no longer shows, but the "Internal Storage Space Left" message I get is still annoying. Thanks.

Your phone consistently creates cache in the /cache partition, or your apps are probably updating their content (Gmail, RSS Readers, Facebook, Vine, Instagram, etc).
You should check your data usage and see whether it was downloading anything behind your back.

Thanks for your feedback, appreciate it. Do you know of any easy way (or better yet, apps that do this) to monitor in real time, what gets installed and/or written to the install area of your storage? This way, whenever I see the "Internal Storage Space Left" message, I can quickly investigate what was just installed/written to my phone? When I'm playing music or watching youtube, whenever this message comes up, the audio freezes up for a second and it's getting really annoying now, aside from the fact that I don't want unknown stuff getting installed on my phone anyway. Thanks!

I'm not sure, but I use Clean Master or SD Maid and they do the job just fine when cleaning up files on your phone. Maybe you should try those instead of preventing anything else from being added, so that when things get added you won't get a prompt when your phone is already cleaned out anyways

Thanks for your reply! Actually, found a simple solution, don't know why I didn't think of this before. As soon as it happened again, I noted the time on the phone clock, then I went into my "root explorer" app and sorted the folders by time. I drilled down into the most recently modified folders and found a file that was modified at the exact same time noted above. It was the samsung gear fit app (or something to that effect) - don't know why I had installed it as I don't own any of the samsung gear accesssories. I deleted the app and the auto-install/updates stopped happening.
