Chromecast Video and Audio Connection Issues - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Is anyone else having major Chromecast issues? I have two chromecasts, 3 chromecast audios and a Google Home. I just can't keep a connection to any of them with my OP5. I can immediately make a connection, but it often disconnects and once that happens I have to reboot both the chromecast and my OP5 to start over the cycle again. It's so frustrating I'm thinking of returning or RMA'ing my phone at this point.

I have to say mines working fine. Are you casting your entire screen to the Chromecast? Or just casting content? My screencasting has been working fine.
If you are using 5ghz, try using 2.4, I know 5ghz on this phone can be wonky.

Casting audio and video through the Chromecast video and audio on my 5GHz network at home. I will try it on the 2.4GHz network and try again...

Stop then start again, don't pause and restart, doesn't work. I've also found that larger files can be an issue, though most stuff works...
Rooted? Reset the counter with Triangle away. Known issue with Allshare cast.
Non-rooted? Make sure the two devices are in line of sight. Also, make sure there are NO other wifi based devices within the same area. I have a wifi extender in the lounge and it causes the device to stutter every now and then. Other thing to do is disconnect the device and reconnect it via the reset button on the dongle.
For placement, I always find it better to have the dongle as low down as possible when I'm downstairs, upstairs is opposite, I have my tv mounted on a swing bracket near the ceiling and the dongle hangs down from it. So play around with the placement and see IF you have a deadzone in the room near the tv.
If all else fails, connect through the PS3 lol
ps3 works well but in a different way. You are accessing the note rather than "throwing" the image to the tv. But that is ok, to a point. Also maybe I am doing it wrong, to listen to music I do not have (or I can not see) the option to play from a file or album. All tunes come up to play. The PS3 does not read all types of video files so they need to be saved in the proper format. Also the included video on the note play does not read many video file types either. So I use MX player.

Following things can help...
1) clear app cache of allshare cast and anything else that looks related.. including wifidirect
2) disconnect dongle and reconnect.
3) shut down wifi in your house and try again, to see if there is interferance issue between wifi direct signal and wifi signals.
4) place the tablet closer to the dongle, to see if that improves connection
5) take the tablet out of its case, and see if that improves wifi direct signal
6) ensure that dongle software version is LJ02. You can update it by downloading an update on your tablet.
7) turn off bluetooth, to see if it avoids interferance.
8) atleast in s3, there is an option to quit power saving mode on wifi
9) the dongle outputs 720p video... so check if your tv is set for same resolution to avoid upscaling issues.
10) last but not the least... check your hdmi cable
I had the same issue with my s3 with allshare cast dongle... but my note 10.1 would connect without lag...
Doing above steps have made it a bit better connection between my s3 and dongle.
Good luck.. i hope one of these work for you...

[Q] Nexus Player Audio Dropout

I have run into an issue when playing video content. Video plays back just fine, but every so often the audio will cut out for about a second or two. Since this started I tried doing a factory reset and this seems to have helped a little, but I still get the occasional drop out. I have noticed this within the youtube, plex, and hulu apps. I don't believe this to be a bandwidth/wifi issue as it is running on my 5GHz band and is at most six feet away from the router.
I have also tried playing back the same content on my chromecast and I run into no issues at all.
I am considering doing a complete factory restore with the img available through google.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Notice it occasionally with plex. I have restored factory image already, did not make any difference for me.
Same issue here, except that I'm connected via 802.11ac instead of just 5GHz. Factory reset didn't do any good, nor did switching any of the streaming quality settings (within reason) or Direct Play/Direct Stream options in the Plex app. My Chromecast is 6" away from the Nexus Player (both of which are maybe 12' from my router) and is only using 802.11n, yet has no issues with any content/quality. Not a good thing! Hopefully a software update can fix it, and soon.

I guess I forgot to mention. I actually am using 802.11ac across my 5GHz band. Still having issues, but my chromecast has none. I saw there is a new factory image (LRX21V) for the player so I am going to try to restore to it today and see if this helps.
Edit: I updated to latest version, still getting the same issue. Hopefully that can be addressed in a future update. I never would have thought that my chromecast would outperform my Nexus Player, but yet here we are.
Ah, okay - I gotcha. I had thought 802.11ac used both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands at the same time, so I thought when you specified 5GHz it meant you were just using 802.11n. I looked it up again and see that isn't the case. Doesn't really matter I guess, since if our Chromecasts are doing fine on 2.4GHz, the NP should have an even better connection regardless.
Sucks that even the latest software doesn't fix it I hope they iron it out soon, because a media player whose audio drops out on a regular basis is not a particularly good one. Might as well go with a Roku.

Yea, sadly I didn't think it would be a networking issue. Hopefully we can get a new build pushed that will fully address this issue.
Mine drops pretty regularly in all apps. It's about once every 30 seconds. I have a 20ft optical cable coming out of my TV and I thought maybe there was some degradation going that far in optical. My other players don't have the problem though. I will try output to just TV and see if that still does it.
Maybe we have to RMA?
I have the same issue. It is in every app. I'm on my second Nexus Player. Both have audio drop out and sometimes i cannot get any sound at all.
I have the same issue with all apps. I RMA'd my first Nexus Player and got a new one; the new one has the same audio drop out issue. Except the new one also reboots pretty much once every couple minutes, too. :-/
I think this is some sort of HDMI connectivity issue. The issue becomes better or worse depending on the HDMI cable I use and the TV or receiver I plug it into on the other end. However, I tried 4 HDMI cables, and none was able to completely stop the audio drop out problem when connected between the Nexus Player and my receiver. The frequency is about once every minute or so and the receiver seems report no audio signal at these occurrences.
Multiple other devices have no issue with the same HDMI ports on my TV and receiver, including multiple chromecasts (which output great un-interrupted surround sound).
I actually like the AndroidTV OS, games etc., but the hardware problems are killing me.
Hopefully this isn't a hardware issue. I am praying that this will be fixed through a firmware update.
are you guys running hdmi through a receiver? I've had my player for about 2 weeks connected directly to my tv in the bedroom with no audio drop issues (at least non that I noticed). I put it in the living room lat night and connected to an HDMI input in my receiver and noticed the audio drops right away. About every 10-15 seconds. I messed with the plex stream settings and tried different apps and all did the same thing. connected to an HDMI input direct to my living room tv and watched an entire movie without issue. I pulled the HDMI cable from my bedroom tv and ran the player through it to my receiver. Audio drops are less frequent but still happening. Right now it seems like my receiver is the common factor in these audio drops. This is very disappointing as I was hoping to order another player to replace my HTPC in the living room. The streaming is great and high quality but the audio issue is a killer.
Same issue. Audio started disappearing in YouTube after a few minutes of play.
This is my second Nexus Player. Had to RMA the first one as I was having issues with the remote voice recognition.
Hate being a beta tester. Google should have done beta testing before releasing this commercially.

Nope. Mine is connected directly to the TV. It's a good quality 4' HDMI cable, which I had never had problems with.

So I didn't even think to try running directly to my TV until you mentioned it. But now that I am I haven't noticed any audio drops. I am going to keep testing and I'll report back if I notice anything.
Seems very odd that the receiver would cause this issue.
It seems to be a combination of the cable and receiver for me. I tested a few of my cables and all had drops but some less frequent then others. However I did find one that seemed less prone. On first connection there were no drops after 30-40 min and I thought all was well. I disconnected the player to move it to its new home and reconnected the cable and noticed drops about every 2-3 min. disconnected the cable and reconnected, wiggled the cable a bit and secured the connections, did a dance with chicken bones and tried again. I now get no audio drops when watching video or playing games. I have noticed audio drops when clicking through menus though. The whole thing seems very random but I'll take this for now.
RMA until you get one that works.
Yup - had the same issue with the one I got from the first batch of orders. I tried factory reset, images, etc. No luck - I RMA'd it, got a replacement and no audio cut-out issues now. Same setup, configuration, etc.
- Shane
So after testing for a few days I haven't had any more audio dropout since switching from my receiver to directly into my TV. I still don't understand why this would make a difference, but it does seem to have fixed my issue.
I RMAd mine and should get the replacement today. I'll see how the new one does.
FWIW, still waiting on my replacement but I decided to try moving the NP to the input on my XBox One and see what happens. After 2 hours of testing I did not notice any audio drops when running through the XBOne to my receiver. This may end up being my solution in the end. The input was unused anyway and now I can run something new through the receiver's now empty input.
So the replacement came in. Hooked it direct to the receiver and right away I noticed audio drops. However, once i had it setup and some apps installed I have it a test. Played a few youtube vids, pandora, plex vids. No audio drops while playing anything. moved the player around. Even disconnected and reconnected the hdmi cable a few times. Still no audio drops while any media is playing. This is good. I did notice audio drop out while moving through menus. Particularly if i stopped moving the cursor for a second or 2, the next click produced no audio, but if i moved the cursor around in rapid succession there are no audio drops. It seems that as long as there's a steady stream of audio coming from the player I see no audio issues. I will give it a better test run later tonight and watch a few shows on Plex and see how it does.

Casting troubles

I got in on the $50 NP deals a little bit ago. It's been a neat little device aside from a couple issues. First, nothing can cast to it. Various phones, tablets try to connect then give up with a "Unable to connect to device" error. I have Chromecasts and they work flawlessly. I have done a factory reset or two without any improvement. Another oddity is that from my desktop computers, most of the time the device doesn't even get listed from the Chromecast icon (No cast devices found). One exception seems to be Youtube. There it shows the device, but still never sends anything to the Player.
The other issue I've had is that Netflix plays 1-5 seconds of a show before popping up it's aip-703. Netflix's web site gives a few suggestions, remove and readd account and the like, but that hasn't helped.
The only other thing I can think of is that the upgrade to Marshmallow might magically fix things, but I'm not holding out much hope. Any other suggestions?
I bet the casting problems you're getting are due to the NP's dodgy wi-fi connectivity. It's got compatibility issues with loads of different routers. I for example have a dual band router and since I moved the NP over to the router's 2.4GHz band, I have been able to cast without issues. And this sucks since I prefer it to connect to the 5GHz band for throughput and interference reasons. If you get any chance to try this with a different router you'll most likely see that those issues go away...
I was wondering that too, so I picked up an OTG cable and connected my Wii's ethernet adapter. Devices still aren't able to connect to the NP's casting receiver. So much for that...
In dealing with the Netflix thing, I decided to give their support a try. Surprisingly, they were very easy to deal with as far as tech support phone lines are. We tried a few things, but weren't able to settle on anything more than maybe it's the ISP's fault (Comcast). One interesting thing was they were able to pull up a demo movie that displays the current bitrate that you're getting. It was only pulling 1700kbps before getting the error. At other devices I get a similar rate, up to 3000kbps. I don't see how if Comcast were throttling Netflix connections, it should fail on any device rather than just this one (phones, tablets, computers, Chromecast, GoogleTV work just fine).
I've been able to cast on both NP I have without an issue. They were both running 5.1.1 and connected through 5Ghz wifi. I updated one to 6.0 and now I have the high brightness issue.
Both the casting and Netflix app got updated yesterday. Hopefully that will fix your problems
Casting no longer powers on TV via HDMI
Has anyone else experienced that casting no longer wakes up a powered-off TV?
Since I got my NP, starting to cast (with the TV off) would power on the TV and set it to the correct input (via HDMI commands sent from the Nexus Player). But, since yesterday (6.0 upgrade and new Cast Receiver - not sure which is to blame) this no longer happens. Is this now a configurable setting somewhere? I do observe that I can still use my TV remote's d-pad to control the Nexus Player, so believe HDMI-CEC is still active and configured correctly on the TV.
I loved this feature (prevented me from needing my TV remote!) and sad that it's now broken.

Need HDHR user's help

I need someone who uses an HDHD for live TV on the Nexus Player to check if they can still connect to the HDHR or not. I am unable to connect to it on either of my Nexus players or on my Nexus phone, all of which are on Android 6.0.1 with Jan 1st security patch. My Android 5.1.1 tablet and windows PC has no issues so I suspect it's an incompatibility issue with either Android 6.0.1 or the most recent security patch. If it's confirmed I'm going to need to figure out how to roll back to a version that still works...

mine is also working fine. HDHR-Prime. I would just make sure that whatever app youre using for it, and the FW on the box are all up to date, and that the CC is pushed in completely. beyond that most issues ive had have been fixed by unplugging it, waiting, and plugging it back in.
I have HDHR Prime with comcast cable card plugged in and HDHomerun android app installed from google store on the Nexus Player. Video is good, audio is only stereo. But the stream - both video and audio freeze - frequently. I then have to switch over to the another channel, select that channel and then move back to the original channel. Not sure whether my router - running 5Ghz and wireless N - is the culprit and not able to handle the HDHR video streams. All other apps, Netflix, Sling TV etc never have any issues streaming.

it's because it's wireless. I have 3 NPs...2 are hardwired and rarely have issues. one is wifi (5ghz) and even though it's about 15 feet from the router freezes and stutters frequently.
Thank you all. The problem was with the WiFi connection. I still don't know what was wrong exactly, but after I renamed the wifi and connected all devices over the 5ghz band they are all working now. It just seemed odd that I could connect to Lollipop and windows devices but not to marshmallow. But that was just a coincidence.

I came across this same issue, I'm not running my nexus tv over wireless, I've added an OTG usb cable, a powered usb switch, and a usb to 10/100/1000 lan adapter and noticed i was having this problem after I upgraded the firmware on my Linksys Wrt1200ac router from stock to ddwrt, I then remembered part of the setup for the hdhr prime was to make sure your router isn't filtering multicast (will be in your firewall settings). Once i changed that setting and rebooted my router I no longer had the freeze and fail symptoms.

Thanks for your answere. If I go to security/firewall page. I do see "Multicast" is being filtered. But the setting is appearing under WAN. I disabled so that Multicast is not being filtered. No luck. The HDHR view app still shows all channels. Plays very well both audio/video for a period of time - no stuttering or glitch - sometimes few minutes and sometimes more than an hour, without any hitch. But then video freezes - no audio as well. I have to navigate to a different tv channel and select the same channel again. It works then.

I replaced my router - Linksys WRT610NV1 (300Mbps Wireless N) with Trendnet TEW-811DRU AC1200. While there are lot negative reviews for the TEW-811DRU, it has worked very nicely for my needs. No more freezes. The router I believe can get pretty hot. Since it is winter time, it may not matter much. I will wait till summer to see whether there are issue because of that. For the price I paid < $20 it is a great buy even if it works for a very short time.

YouTube / Network Issue

Hi Everyone,
So I was watching a YouTube video on my PC and then decided to switch to my SHIELD to watch on the big screen, on my PC which is hardwired, YouTube was playing fine at 1080p, I switch to the SHIELD and it streams at 480p... I thought whats going on here? Checked my network I'm the only one in the house and nothing else is running...
So I went back to the PC played the same video again boom 1080p checked stats for nerds connection speeds are good...
Did the same on the Shield and the connections speeds are bad...
Tried the same on my iPad streams fine at 1080p again connection stats are fine?
Tried the same video on my Fire Stick.... bad connection....
My Shield is hardwired... and Fire Stick is wireless and I even tried switching to the ethernet cable from my PC... nothing change?
I thought maybe its an issue with the YouTube app on the Shield and FireStick since it uses the YouTube.com/TV version, so I tried the website on my PC connection speeds fine?
Here are some Screenshots.
imgur.com/a/Z7pZk
Any Help would be great.
Afaik it's an android TV problem. But did you have the latest version of the YouTube app?
