Question about rooting with one click root apps. - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I want to have the iOS emojis on my S8 international model. I researched and found out that if I root I will lose the OTA updates. I was wondering what if I root my device with the help of the one click root apps and then change the emojis and then open the app and select unroot. Will that work?

No it won't work. After you have rooted your device its status will be "custom" which means you won't receive any OTA updates. Even a factory reset won't change the status back to official, you will have to flash a stock image with Odin.

Not sure there is any compatible one click root apps that work for s8.

[Q] Is root persistent through OTA update?

I'm looking to root my phone but I don't want to flash any new bootloader or custom roms. I'm under the impression that I'll still be able to get OTA updates if I do this. My question is if I download and install an OTA update will I still have root on the phone or will it remove root? Thanks!

I was still able to receive and apply the OTA after rooting, but the OTA did cause me to lose root. But re-rooting was pretty painless.
Its sure than rooting phone you receive OTA and can install it?? If yes, I want to root my phone, only root, i dont want to change anything more for receiving OTAs.
How can I do? just only root, any link to the safest way?
Is the same way when I receive an OTA and i have to root again?
many thanks.
1. You can use an app called OTA Rootkeeper. Use it to hide root before you accept an OTA, then use it to restore root after.
2. Yes, you can use adb commands (possibly the Nexus 4 toolkit as well) to temporarily flash clockwork recovery and obtain root. You will need to unlock the bootloader though, and that will factory reset your device.

Good advice for OTA Rootkeeper! If I head down this path I'll make sure to use that. I'm still looking around for the best way to root without unlocking the bootloader or factory reseting.
Superuser contains a built in 'try and preserve root' function which worked well when I updated to 4.2.1

May I install OTA updates?

I own a rooted Note 3. (Take a look to the attached screenshot)
An OTA upgrade has been notified and downloaded. But I haven't installed yet because I think I'll lost my root if I do that thing.
Is that right?
Is there a "safe" way to upgrade my Note's firmware without loosing root?

You cannot OTA update if the phone has been rooted. If you do that, the error message will be shown.
Follow this instruction to OTA update and keep root:
1. Open SuperSU settings
2. Scroll down to the bottom, Enable Pro
3. Check Survival mode
4. Uncheck Enable Superuser
5. Install OTA update
6. After reboot, Enable Superuser
7. Disable Survival mode
Note: You have to purchase Superuser Pro for this to work, and you have to reboot after upgrading to Pro.

@cinciopillo you will loss root access. You have to root it again, if any way available to root it again. "Kindly ignore this"

CF-autoroot or flash TWRP then in TWRP flash SuperSU
Kingroot and SuperSU_me method works also... Watch the entire process in 2 parts... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWnYFDQ1Vio

Have you lost root since? I've read a lot about people loosing root after a few hours to a couple of days. Any other issues, like random crashes / freezes / reboots?

That's why flashing TWRP and SuperSU is the safest/easiest way to root, it's about as straightforward as it gets

Wasn't aware I could flash a custom recovery on a stock unrooted phone. I don't use the s4, that's why both of the ones I own aren't rooted already, my personal phones are often rooted before I even get home from the store! I need root and su without tripping knox or making any significant changes to the current set-up on either phone. I would prefer the recovery was stock on at least one of 'em. So how should I go about this? One is a tri band and the other isn't. The dual band one needs to be as stealth as possible. Losing root really won't matter as long as the system permissions remain as is prior to losing root.

Flashing a custom recovery is going to trip knox. Why do you care about knox? Triband or not flashing TWRP and SuperSU is the same. If you lose root and have things that require root to operate, you will lose the function of those things, unless it's a one off type of thing

It's imperative that root is stealth. Just need to give one app already running su permissions. On one device knox is monitored, that's why I care. I wouldn't care on my s5, but I never tripped it anyway - rooted with modified stock recovery, flashed MOAR, flashed TWRP. Been using MAOR and TWRP since each was first released. Been rooted on my personal devices since 3 days after the Hero was released. I've just never rooted the s4 or "stealth rooted" any device. That's why Kingroot / SSM looks promising. Any help would be appreciated.

In order to have root you will need to install Twrp to push Su which means removing the stock recovery needed to install updates(Another way is to boot into Twrp without removing stock recovery and flashing Su but there is no benefit in doing that, Twrp is nice to have). What will happen when you have Twrp installed is you will be notified of system updates but you won't be able to install them unless you restore the stock recovery back which is easy to do. Now you may ask if i restore the stock recovery and update will i lose Root?, yes you will and you will have to flash Su again with every update that's why there is no advantage in removing Twrp unless you want to update your system.
So in short you will have to root with every update whether there is stock recovery or Twrp.
Updates what updates never had one yet.

If you are on Marshmallow then their isn't one yet. But if you are on Lollipop it will depend on what region and country you are in. Some regions get faster updates than others but you can install them manually if you can find a rom compatible with you phone.

Remove root from the SU app go to settings and choose complete uninstall. Then make sure you have the stock recovery installed not twrp if you have it on you should be able to update after that. I recommend you reset the device before applying updates.

Question about Rooting?

Is there any way to root your 6P and keep the stock recovery? I would like to have a dark system theme. But unless your on root you can't really make everything dark. I would also like to hide the soft keys which unless your rooted you can not. I don't want to lose the OTA updates and was hoping that just rooting the phone without a custom recovery would do the trick?

You can, just boot TWRP to your device from there bootloader with fastboot. With the current TWRP image the command would be "fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-angler.img". Unfortunately, just having root on your device is enough to cause an OTA update to fail. You would have to fully unroot, apply the OTA, then root again.

You can use flashfire to do just what you want.
Use CF-auto root to root, then when OTA comes along, flashfire to update.
