normally you would need an otg cable to drive an external usb dac.
does it make a difference, that this phone has no headphone jack
and therefore has standard audio output over usb or do i still need
an otg cable?

if only using an USB-C to 3,5mm adapter you don´t but for any DAC you need an OTG AdapterCable.
just for reference i use this one and it works perfectly:

Since this thread is very old but not closed, I might share some light on this, Sandisk USB stick generally don't work well with Xiaomi Redmi phones, there is no problem with Kingston.
