My Nexus 7 2012 wifi model is driving me nuts. :crying:
Every reboot keeps going through the same long startup "Android is starting" "optimizing app 74 of 98" etc takes ages to boot.
I have tried factory reset. Did not Work
re rooting and re writing custom recovery. Did not work.
Never ever had this problem before flashing the image on previous occasions. Only thing that has changed is the version of Nexus root tool kit.
Using nexus root toolkit v2.1.9
and factory image Android 5.1.1 LMY47V

You can try to wipe cache/dalvik cache from custom recovery. Why insisting on LP 5.1.1, it lags a lot, with that rom Nexus 2012 is barely usable. I am on AndDiSa's Nougat 7.1.2, working very well

Thanks. You put me in the right direction. After 3 years of lag because the final firmware from google was crap. I never thought that would be the cause. All this time I thought I had a bad internet connection until now.
I now have a super fast Nougat O.S
All that's left to fix now is the external memory card which is not detected. Would you happen to know if Nougat 7.1.2 detects otg cable's or does it need fixes. I have installed the two "stickmount" files but still not working. It could be that I lost the ogt cable and using the wrong one, but I don't think so.

I had the same issue: as soon as I flashed and unrooted 5.1.1 stock, my tablet went off the rails. I guess it somehow grew intolerant of being rooted.
I flashed the Unofficial LineageOS, and now I'm as happy I can be.
I was saving for replacing my Nexus 7, which I use as an e-Reader for Kindle, Kobo and some local magazines with a specialized Android reader with a Kindle Fire, but I ended up replacing the dinged battery and using my Nexus 7

Thanks. Mixplorer much better than "es file explorer" that I had been using for many years and had become slow to load with all the added unwanted bloatware functions.
Still no luck getting my external usb recognized in android Grouper 7.1.2. Have order another cable which will hopefully get it working but am sure I am using the cable that worked fine before on my previous os.
I have the "enable otg" box ticked in Mixplorer, have installed the two stickmount files from chainfire and downloaded the additional files it required. Have used the tool "usb host diagnostics" by chainfire but it detects nothing when I insert the usb cable. The memory cards are fat32 formatted.

Working fantastic for me. Only had installed about a week so too early to say. I first had it installed with the BeansGapps-Mini-7.1 which gave good performance. Then I read better to use the Pico version of Gapps which to my amazement gave even better performance. No going back to Android 5.x Lollipop for me.
Don't use last version of the google stock which was 5.1.1 (LMY47V). It is crap and freezes often. I guess you could go back to kitkat 4.4.4 as Lollipop not good for Nexus 7, but I recommend Nougat with the pico Gapps judging by how well my Nexus 7 is now performing.

Still not work. Can't even tick the "USB OTG" box via the Mount option in TWRP. So hoping my new cable will fix this when it arrives.
Looks like a hardware issue, OTG table or usb port. Good luck with the new cable

New cable also not being recognized. Will try a bit of wd40, tablet does charge via the usb.
Figured out the problem. USB port will only function if I apply downward pressure on the cable where it plugs into the mini usb. Taking the circuit board out was not too difficult, so I ordered a new part.

hi all, and merry xmess! I rooted my excessively lagging Nexus 7 (2012) yesterday with a lineage 14 build but NRT did not manage to flash it: I was informed that build would not work on my tablet, it had to have the 5.1.1 build.
So I eventually flashed that, and get the 'optimising apps' merry-go-round...
In my case it is now optimising 79 apps, even though I installed only the nano version of GAPPS plus a few of my originally installed 'essentials' from Google Play. So how is it chewing on 79 apps?
Any help appreciated!

This doesn't have anything to do with stock firmware. If I remember correctly, this is a normal android 5.0-5.1 issue and occurs with any odexed rom. Basically when android LP boots it makes all the system apps executable, (that's what those nifty odex files are for), by putting the app together with its odex file. While this makes a much faster rom when it is booted, boot time (clearly) suffers on lower end devices due to the apps being deodexed when memory is low (hence why they have to be reodexed at boot). There is an app that blocks this from happening, but due to the Nexus 7's tricky ram issue, it slows the device down. My solution? Don't run android on this device. Try other OS's, try Ubuntu, try webOS, try Sailfish OS, try anything else. There are some good android roms for the OG Nexus 7 but most of them tend to start slowing down over time. Again, take what I say with a grain of salt.

i seem to have a problem with mounting the internal storage on the phone, it doesnt ask me to mount when i plug the phone in like it normally would so i tried mounting through recovery but still cant do it through there, tried 3 different roms and all the same issue, are there any kernels with this issue? im running newest nscollab with the kernel it comes with...not sure what to do
are you running the latest recovery? can you use the storage space with apps on the phone?
I have been having the exact same problems. Nothing seems to work. Can't mount through CW and I have the most recent version. Randomly it started to work again by turning the phone off. Plugging phone into computer. Turning phone back on. It would recognize it until now. Now that doesn't work....
I am using Mac and Linux and neither one need drivers so that has nothing to do with it.
I'm screwed if I have to take the phone in for warranty work because I am rooted.
Anyone come up with something to fix this?
Or is there a way to "force it to mount?"

So it's showing the storage on the phone and not on the computer, correct?
Can you select to mount the USB when you plug it in?
Does the device show up in the System Profiler app in Mac OS X?

That is incorrect. It does not show up on the phone. When it shows up on the phone it mounts to the computer. It is not even recognizing it on the phone now. For awhile it was working and now its not again. Haven't done anything else to the phone.
When it doesn't show up on my phone it is not recognized by the system profiler.
Never had a problem with any other android device except on my epic 4g when I tried running the miui beta for it. But it would still mount in clockwork.
It is not the cable because I have four different cables. One of which works flawlessly on my epic. Which had a lot of problems when using the stock cable.
Is this hardware related or is it because of the rooting process?
What r some possible fixes if any?

okay, I had this issue when the nexus s 4g was first released and the first roms/recoveries came out. I would just start over. backup using titanium backup and flash the stock files in fastboot, then unlock again, flash the recoveries, etc.
How exactly would I revert to stock if commands from my computer in fastboot do not recognize the device?

Try es file explorer and give root access ... this was u can atleast access files from your phone...
PROBLEM SOLVED... at least for me
Found out when flashing to a stock rom (currently running MIUI) that my usb port on my phone is loose. Just have to be careful with it. Makes sense that it was randomly happening.
With MIUI it wouldn't show right away because I had it set to auto-mount. But when i flashed the stock rom. The pop-up to mount-sd would show up and go away show up and go away....

Hello spent all day trying to sort an issue here.
I'm running my nexus 7 with latest jellybean update official and unlocked and rooted.
I have changed my kernel to trinity, over clocked to 1.6ghz
But heres my big issue' I don't have any USB support
So I would like to use playstion control pad and flash drives.
When I connect devices nothing happens. I have tried installing stick mount and loads other apps, with no joy. Sorry guy I,m new to this forum. I see lots of people use other devices on you tube' I can't. In have a samsund s3
I connect a cable it comes up with USB connected works well that using ps3 pad on asphalt 7 with no problems

Have you got SuperSU to grant super user access to devices?
As StickyMount needs superuser permissions to function.
If you don't have SuperSU, download it, configure it and then try to manually run StickyMount, it should ask you to grant it superuser permissions, do this and your good to go.
If you've already done this, I've seen people removing stickymount, clearing all the data/cache etc, delete it from superSU list and then re-install StickyMount, re-grant it superuser and you should be good to go !
I confirm loss of OTG support with 4.1.2 - I downgraded to 4.1.1. and recovered OTG support.
This is a bad update....
Stock kernel on both...rooted...using USB mass watcher with OTG but tried others on 4.1.2 to no avail...

Mine has OTG support with stock 4.1.2, though only intermittently. I traced the problem to the OTG cable. Something is loose in the female usb head because it stops working whenever I lightly touch it and starts working again when I push the cable deeper into the plastic cover.
Maybe something similar is happening to yours.
Rooted, stock kernel, 4.1.2 OTA: I still have full OTG-usb support with Stickmount. I just now viewed some pics on a flash drive and copied a file to the external drive.

Which ROM are you using?
Rooted, stock rom, stock kernel, now 4.2.1, cwm recovery, stickmount. OTG works perfectly for read/write and streaming media.
4.2.1 , no OTG-USB!!! what's wrong
Are you rooted and using the current stickmount app? The storage media should be FAT32. Some cables may not work. Maybe try with a wireless mouse receiver.
Edit: Just saw your other thread. Sounds like you are doing the right things. Did stickmount ask for root access?
It might be your otg cable
For some users, the app appears not to work, while in fact it is the device itself or the cable not working. One OTG cable is not the other OTG cable. If you have a USB stick with a light on it, it should light up when you connect it to the Galaxy Nexus using your OTG cable. If it does not, either your cable or your Nexus is faulty. 99 out of 100 times it is going to be your cable. That the cable works fine with another device does not mean anything! Cables known to work on a one devices may not work on another device.

Well.... no effing clue whats happened.... it must've updated recently as no longer rooted or using golauncher... getting rather annoyed at the inability to access the internal storage via usb...
Windows brings up a massive message that when i googled it the fix was to apparently unplug the pc.... which resolved a few issues but still get the same issues with the kindle... which sucks.... managed to connect briefly with Linux but now it just seem to not acknowledge it at all....
I had what i thought were the latest drivers as i only installed them a couple of days ago.. (rediscovered scummvm!!!)
Any ideas what I can do? I want to re root and flash a totally new rom as the amazon one is truely awful
And which is the best root method for 7.4.6? If there is one....

You would probably benefit most by using KFFA to return to 7.2.3 then root, remove OTA updates and install GApps. This way when you go to install a custom ROM, you have a matching boot loader. In order to put a custom ROM on, you need to flash a 2nd boot loader and TWRP. All this is covered in great detail on here. If you have questions do ask.

I tried to install a new font with Font Installer, as it had worked in the past, but my phone then got stuck in a boot loop. I had already gotten rid of my backup after I found out that PA wasn't going to be updated until 4.4, so I thought there was no need for a Nandroid until then. I do not seem to have any PA ROM .zip's on my phone anymore.
A couple weeks ago, my usb port stopped working and everytime I try to plug something into the port, it begin to heat up and there is a burning smell. So I cannot transfer anything through usb.
So I made a factory reset and then wiped the system and now when I try to reboot, TWRP says "No OS Installed." When I proceed and the phone reboots, I am stuck on the screen with "Google."
Is there any way I can fix this?

First of all it is a good lesson why you always have to keep a nandroid backup.
Ia the USB on your PC is the problem? Can't you go to other PC and transfer a zip to your nexus?
I guess that USB is the only way.. You obviously can't use WiFi or bluetooth. Find a PC and do it.

You're right about that.
No, the usb on my N4 is the problem. Plugging any usb cable into the port doesn't work. No computer can recognize the device and the device is unable to charge through usb either.
I'm very sorry and it's painful to say but I can't think of any solution.. Maybe only to fix your USB port..

Has anyone received the 1.4 update. I read it was supposed to have started yesterday. I tried updating but no joy. ?
They pulled it because some 500GB model users got soft-bricked, and the device would only boot into fastboot (which is easily fixable by unlocking bootloader and flashing factory images).
If anyone captured the OTA url before they pulled it it would be appreciated

you can try HW solution by press the power manytimes when you connect power cable
HW method:
- Disconnect power cable
- Insert USB OTG cable and make sure to connect other end to a host PC
- Connect power cable to SHIELD
- Quickly start pressing power button for ~3 seconds
- Do not hold the button and connect power supply afterwards
- HDMI TV should be always connected to SHIELD
I got the update seems to be running OK...

Anybody else's notice the device is sluggish here an there even before the update.I got the pro version just doesn't as snappy like it was first couple weeks I had it..
Since you have a working 1.4 update, could you boot up TWRP recovery, you don't need to install it, and backup system, then upload it where people can access it please? Proferably with the boot partition in case something changed there. As for speed, your drive needs trimmed. They claim it's done automatically, but I'm calling BS. When I trim twice a day, the drive is much much faster. I suggest fstrim. There are ways to do it from the command line, but may as well get it automated since it helps. I do it on my SSD's also, and there is little to no life degen as some think. It has to trim before adding files anyways, just gets it done all at once.

All of them work. I personally use option 1,but they all run the name command. Some devices prefer one or the other. Trimmer seems to be the most up to date.
after 1.4 anyone have issue using fastboot boot command to boot into twrp?
I tried it and it says it sending the image and finishes but the SATV just freezes on fastboot menu and you have to pull plug.

1.4 dont add support for that.
Android 6.0 will enable that by stock.
At the moment you need root access.

Mine was a little sluggish before update now after update a little worse.The whole system just seems very buggy
I guess I'll wait for the next update. Seems it's breaking things. Nothing wrong with 1.3

I used the kitkat SD card fix application in the play store and that seemed to fix the SD write issues. I was on 1.3. I don't run stock these days, so I haven't tested 1.4, but should work.
