I recently bought an external SSD for use with my 2017 shield, I have it formatted and mounted to the system and while I can move a select few apps to the external storage I am unable to move the main offender, an app called Ariel Dream. Its an app that runs the apple tv screen saver on android tv, love the app. However, it uses quite a bit of space as Id prefer to downloaded the videos for the screen saver rather than streaming them and frankly the base line shield does not have enough storage for it.
So any way to force install app to external storage without root? Or even temporary root and then restore to stock after the transfer is made?
*SOLVED* This is apparently solved by enabling developer mode in the usual android way and enabling force move to usb option. I just found this feature is available for Android TV today.

If you are still wondering:
- What is the breakdown of that 32GB Xoom internal memory (how many parition, how much space for apps / files)?
- Why Google is using MTP instead of USB file transfer on Honeycomb?
Here is straight answer from Google developer:
MTP is a big improvement over USB mass storage — for devices with lots of internal memory, a manufacturer no longer needs to come up with some hard partition between the USB mass storage and internal storage. Instead, they are all in one partition, with MTP providing access to the directory of media files that would normally be available through USB mass storage. This means there is no longer a need for apps on SD card for such devices, because what used to be the “internal SD card” is in the same partition as where applications are stored. The storage on your device can be used for either applications or media, depending on what you want to put on it. You aren’t stuck with how much space the manufacturer decided to leave for the two areas.
Oh also this means that the media storage doesn’t need to be unmounted from Android when it is being access through the PC.

Finally, true APP2SD You now have 32GB to put all your apps!!!
Sounds like a good thing!
This is a great explanation. Thanks for posting.
There is no doubt that mtp has advantages over mass storage. On the other hand I miss the ability to attach it to any computer and access files. It is not a huge problem but does add a limitation that was not there before.
That saod it is nice being able to access files on my computer without losing access to the partition on the device.

I only see a problem if you flash different roms and have to do full data wipes.

I'm sure future versions of CWM will be set to ignore that one folder.. I hope. Otherwise nandroid backups will take forever.
I'm not sure in terms of security it is a huge improvement; unless there is an option to turn it on/off somewhere.
Previously I would have to plug an Android device in to my computer, turn the device on, enter my unlock code, and then specifically allow the computer access via the USB. This morning I just plugged my xoom in and, poof, access to all my stuff.
At least before someone had to take my sdcard out at put it in their computer manually
Does MTP have anything to do with file size limit? I've seen posted on this forum that you can't load video files larger than 4gb onto the Xoom because of FAT32, is that still the case?
This MTP also seems to hide a lot of file from being seen by a pc. I open folders with File manager on the Xoom and see more folders namely the android folder which has game save data and other odd ball files. When hooked to a pc its blank. With MTP it seems all your allowed to do is transfer music, video and pics.

Still haven't got around to testing (so many things to try out!), but in some of the video threads, I've been told XOOM uses EXT4 format not FAT32, and thus, should not have that 4GB limit. I've been re-encoding video files to meet XOOM's current playback limitations, and have been reducing them to sub 4GB anyway, so I haven't tested that for myself.
This is about the lack of storage. Everyone seems to be happy with the plugging in of the usb and removing it whenever it is not needed. This to me seems long as you have to pen a file manager to see your files and obviously cannot install apps on it. I was wondering if we could put the actual android os onto the stick so we boot the phone off of it so we can also install apps? Just an idea.

For that to work you would need OTG working, it isn't supported currently. Even the 8GB model has more than enough storage for system files, apps and their associated data; its people that like to carry around huge music or video libraries that find it inadequate. BTW box.com is offering 50GB of free storage for any LG phone this month, embrace the cloud people.
Hi,
I am so close to getting this setup how I wanted - it's frustrating...
I have a nexus player - loaded kodi, side loaded NHL network, side loaded Amazon app - all that is working. I attach a 4TB USB drive (formatted fat32) and although ES file explorer can see it and Kodi can use it, I cannot get move to SD working...
I rooted it, I have super user working, I installed stickmount and ran that and tried using folder mount with no luck.
The external drive almost looks like it shows up as 2 drives...
When I unplugged the drive Kodi somehow cannot see it anymore when plugged back into the hub.
I want to be able to load this stuff up because this setup is getting taken to a camper where the only internet will be my phone as a wifi hot spot but I don't want to burn a ton of data - I want to use play later to add to the collection up there by just transferring new files on a USB stick, also use that to sideload any APK's up there.
Right now the unit itself was so full I cannot install anything more so I was looking for an app2sd option like my phone and used the (root, su, stickmount, foldermount way I read in several places).
I had to uninstall things just to install foldermount but if there are menu's on that I cannot access them so I can get to createpair screen and navigate to the place where you would populate destination, but once at that screen - there is no way I can see to save that - just has up (go back)... so I am totally stuck - been at it for hours - about to just take it back and build a small htpc but I really liked the idea of such a small device with the limited space I have at the camper.
I admit I do not have a good understanding of how Android deals with it's file structure and mounting drives / volumes.
Is what I am trying to do possible or am I asking for to much?
I discribed the only way i found that works here:

Without the ability to install on an external location i think the nexus player is worthless.
Almost every good game is almost 2 GB shame on you google ......
8GB for a TV box is way too little without an external SD card !!!
I tried your way numerous times but it doesn't mount the 2nd partition, sometimes it doesn't see the 2nd partition, (intermittent) ...any ideas?

Hi all,
I added a 500GB HD to my Nexus Player and selected the option to make it part of the internal storage. Then I chose the option to migrate my apps to the HDD. Another way is to select settings/apps/devices and storage and change the storage location for that app.
Problem is, not all apps are being moved. Kodi, for instance refuses to move by both options. For moving it manually later, I don't even get the option to move it to the HDD.
Any advice? Currently running Android N DP5
Thanks in advance.

Just try to use USB SD card adapter.
Hello, is the Sony Android TV kd-49xh8096 rootable ?
I need root access in order to move some data from the internal storage to the USB Stick with the "ln" command.
Currently, somme apps refuse categorically to be moved to the USB Stick even when you allow it in the develpipper options. I have an app called "DIG" that takes over 3GB of space in the internal storage and I have only 100MB left after being obliged to delete useful apps to free up space. Yet I have a USB stick with plenty of space that just asks to be used.
Frustrating.
