Just noticed in chrome that there is now article suggestions appearing on the home page if you srcroll down!! I actually thought this was specific to the S8 until i checked my previous phone and noticed it too! It appears i just never spotted it before! The aspect ratio of the S8 seems to be what made me notice it! Anyway..... Can i turn this off? I have no interest in these silly news articles! Doesn't seem to be a samsung thing but whoever is pushing this crap on us needs to understand that most of us have no interest so at least give us the option to turn off these suggestions!!
there was a flag to disable it, but the google idiots got rid of it
so nope, currently no way to disable that nonsense
@Blaalad12
Go to chrome://flags and search for these two entries:
#enable-ntp-popular-sites
#enable-ntp-remote-suggestions
After disabling these entries (and restart of Chrome) you will habe just your recent downloaded files and recent visited bookmarks in that list on start page.
Of course you can disable "downloads" and recent visited bookmarks, too.
Unfortunately there is no chance to get back the buttons at the bottom of the new tab page.

My Hong Kong service provider, CSL, who supplied my HD2, has messed with the Opera and ie apps. They've put in a bar at the top advertising their own website, MyNet, and I can't see how to get rid of it. It takes up about 25% of the screen real estate. Any ideas how they did it and how to get rid of it?

I'd recommend flashing the 1.48 ROM to get rid of that. You'll need to read about Goldcard, but it's currently free, and will allow you install an official HTC ROM.
Goldcard stuff is here...

The official ROM thread is here...

I expect you'll have plenty of questions about this process. Don't be afraid to ask the guys in those threads for help. Just make sure you've read all the posts first, as there's lots of help already out there.
Good luck
This sounds like the same irritating CSL MyNet "service" they tried to provide to me.
If it's the same thing then it's easy to disable.
In addition to the MyNet tab there are two other tabs to the right. The 3rd is "Customer Service". Near the bottom of this tab is a section for "1O1O MyNet setting" which provides an option to disable MyNet toolbar. After you do this you will then get a warning about having to pay for data accessed outside "MyNet" but I think this is nothing special as presumably you have some data plan already. The warning only comes up at the time when you disable the "service".
I don't know whether this is just a coincidence, but once this toolbar was disabled I found that Opera's zoom (which had stopped working properly sometime around when MyNet toolbar first appeared) was working properly again.
BTW I can't see how to re-enable it once it is disabled. (Not that I want to do so, it's just my nature to want to know how to reverse whatever changes I make ...)
last night i was fiddling with my phone and it started to hang at the white evo screen. short story, my only fix was to wipe EVERYTHING. nandroids, titanium, miui backup, you name it.
anyway, i go to the online market to get all my applications again. i go to "My Library", but it wont show any apps past letter 'P'. every page past 'P' is blank. it even shows the dots at the bottom that indicate the page im on ISNT the final page. if i search the market for an app i know i had that is alphabetically past 'P', it shows that i had previously installed it.
any ideas? i found one other person on google with the same problem, said he emailed google, they said they'd check into it. that was dec 2010
EDIT: also, has anyone else seen the HILARIOUSLY outrageous comments on some of the apps? they tend to be on apps that are actually useless, but the dev is gettin TONS od d/l's and 5* ratings because of this. thought it was funny enough to share, sorta related since both have to do with market
83 views and no one else has this problem with the market? bump
Have you tried the new market?
Ya its awesome. But my question has to do with the website market.android.com
It wasn't specifically the letter "p" where it stopped, but I am not able to view all of my apps on the online market as well. I can keep clicking the 'next' arrow for the first ten pages or so, then after that each page is blank, even though it shows that there are at least six more pages.
I know it's too late now, but you might consider adding a dropbox account to your titanium backup in the future. Could save a few hours of frustration some day.

ya, turns out its not letter related, but wont show past the 10th page. ill have to look into dropbox i guess eh? lol
any fix for this? or any news at all?
so i have no need of it now but the top line of apps that keep track of what you have opened just keeps getting longer.. anyone now how to clear that out yet?
also if anyone is looking for a password app to bock a few apps from the kids accidently buying apps or getting into your email the app "app protector pro"(also has a trial) is one of the few that work... some on the amazon store do not block at all and some are buggy. this one i have been using since yesterday and it has several good modes. only thing with this is i had to side load a different facebook app(touch client for facebook) because the "app" for amazon just goes to the browser. and this will allow the kids on theirs without logging me out or getting into mine.
.i know people are having problems getting the regular market place in. i stopped trying and just started using blapkmarket side loaded for my apps.
also im finding kobo to be the best ereader app to side load that seems to give the best results.
hope this helps anyone with the same issues
The Recent section is one of the more annoying aspects to the UI in my opinion. First it should need to be SO LARGE... and second, it would be nice to just turn it off. Many of the "icons" displayed are terrible looking especially recent web pages etc...
The other is the lack of control buttons being available without an extra step. Coming from a Android phone it takes some getting used to. I suppose someone who has never had a droid based phone might think it is okay, but I would guess not.
To clear apps from your carousel: Settings->applications->Filter by all Apps->AppManager -> Clear Data
to clear watched videos from your carousel. Settings->More->Applications->Amazon Video-> Clear Data -> Go back to the home screen click on one of the other tabs like books and then back the the home and it is gone.
-D
worked thank you
Now we need a setting that just makes the carousel disappear completely.... most likely a different app launcher though.
Today, I turned on my phone to discover a strange new widget/icon on my homescreen that looked like a blue magnifying glass and was labelled 'Search'.
Of course, being suspicious I removed the widget. I then looked through the list of installed widgets and apps, but nothing unusual was there.
Later when I opened the internet browser, the usual google homepage looked a bit different - identical, tabs and all, except for the search button appearing the same as in the widget and the Google logo missing (as if it hadn't loaded yet).
I've reset my homepage to Google, but in my history the bogus sites are:
start.infospace.com
searchmobileonline.com
Scanned with both AVG and Avast, but neither picked anything strange up.
I have since found out that this is adware that some free apps on the Market are using to generate revenue. In my case I have since confirmed it came from Brightest Flashlight Free, an app with over 1 million downloads and 5 star average.
Here's an article explaining it *http://www.pcworld.com/article/245305/sneaky_mobile_ads_invade_android_phones.html*
Just though I'd warn everyone, as I'm a very careful / savvy user and only use very popular, respected apps, but still got it. Personally I think adding phantom widgets and hijacking your browser homepage with a fake google look-a-like is disgusting and bordering on criminal, as no warning or notification is made that this is going to happen, where it came from and how to remove / fix it.

Good call mate! I downloaded the AirPush Detector, AdFree Android, and Addons Detector thats mentioned on the post, and they found some on my SG2.
I will give all offending apps a one star rating, and this will get these dev's to act!!
Thanks
If you're going to give these apps one star ratings, don't forget to put a very scathing review up as well. A single star rating either way isn't going to bother these people much, but if you put a really negative review up as well, it adds a little impact.
In my experience, a brutal review tends to get devs attention fairly quickly, especially those who care about the rep of their apps
... and I wondered from where that magnifying glass appeared on my homescreen.
By the way, the icon sucks
I installed one crappy app from the market but unistalled everything fishy in the moment I saw that icon ...
This has happened to me 2x wish I knew what app it was. I normally only download popular ones too.

I have the magnifying glass too. I didn't notice it at first because I use TWLauncher 4.5 and it only added itself to the stock launcher. I guess its time to do some forum searching or uninstall all my add based apps.
You guys (especially OP) need to use programs like Lookout or ESET and stay away from ****ty apps like AVG (Which is also **** on PC).

personally i feel you should report this app to Google straight. No chances should be given for developers of such nasty lowdown apps.
I personally dont use any of the antivirus stuff but have my host file update for removing ads and use LBE security to block applications access to the internet.
Thanks
Thanks... very usefull information
Installed LBE and now monitoring apps
Thanks for the heads up and the useful apps recommended.
All clean here, but glad I checked.
Further good reasons not go down the pirate route kids - get that Blackmarket and Mobilism app off ya devices
Mobilism app isn't malware.
I use Avast and adaway and they seem to be effective enough although no doubt malaware is a cause for concern.

I'll take your word for it. It allows you to test pro versions or other paid apps, and if you like them, you go to Android's market and buy the "proper" goods.... Sure. That's all right then.
How much does eset cost? Could only see free 30 day trial

That's what I use it for. I like to trial an app properly. If I like, buy from the market, if it's crappy, delete.
The same happened to me, I only realised when a lot of my google searches were US based and not UK. When I clicked on the "privacy" link at the bottom of the Google page (or what I thought was google, it just had a different search icon) it brought up info about a different company, it wasnt the usual google privacy disclaimer.
In the end I think I had to uninstall all the recent apps because I wasnt sure which had done it and had to clear data on the browser to remove it.
My Samsung Galaxy Note has also been invaded by this searchmobile pest and I am looking for a lasting solution, or an app that can identify which app invited the malware. "free iPads" have also appeared annoyingly frequent.
Got the new phone other day, really nice so far.
BUT when i choose an uploader button on forums, craigslist or google image search etc… the choose an action menu pops up like normal, but NO gallery icon.
SO how can i upload? Taking a new pic each time is pretty annoying. BTW this worked fine on all my previous droid devices WITHOUT a special craigslist app or google app etc…..

It's not clear what you are objecting to. What your droid did is irrelevant. It's not reasonable to expect every phone to be identical for your favourite features. And if that is somehow critical to you.. why did you buy a non-droid phone?
As far as I can tell, you are accustomed to having the gallery icon show up on the action menu and don't like that it's (apparently) not there on your S5. Did you try clicking, "documents" on the action menu? I bet that takes you right into the gallery or a file browser.
Or there are a million other ways to do the same thing too - my files (the stock file browser, various apps, upload from your browser, long press on the recents (left soft) key to access a conventional context menu, the command line.. etc, etc.
If you want, go grab the Google gallery apk and install it and I bet it shows up on the action menu..
.
Umm thanks I guess??
Yes document worked.
The other 12 paragraphs you typed why?
Wtf are you talking about ? I guess htc, Sony and Samsung don't count. Lol

Dear Vdubjim,
To be completely honest with you the answer you received was quite sensible - outlining many options you do have and hope they can be resolved.
Do note - "droid" - means a Motorola phone with that word in the name (a/p gsmarena.com 4 pieces produced). Therefore - the whole rant about other options in other device maker's skins for Android.
The thing is - there are a lot of people in those forums who do not bother to google for answers and who simply want everything put before them on a plate. This always results in a somewhat sarcastic reply - and personally I'm not surprised. The answer you received was mild and non-offensive - please do take note of that.
Cheers!
Thank you for the insight.
Next time I'll post my search logs.
