I am in a total dilemma now guys and just looking for a quick bit of advice...
I have mentioned on other threads about my concerns with a couple of features on the phone. (Camera, messages not sending, constant internet connection etc) and although maybe minor complaints they are causing me to seriously think about sending it back tomorrow. If I do I may just plump for the cheaper hero on a shorter contract and play the waiting game.
Do you think it is worth hanging on to this device in the hope that most of these issues will be resolved? When do you think the first fixes will come out?
Don't get me wrong, I think this is a fantastic device but these minor issues are really getting to me now.
I am going for some rest and looking to make my decision with a clear head tomorrow morning but any thoughts advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers folks

I don't believe the message problem happens on T-Mobile......at least I've not had a single unsent message, also my internet has been completely glitch free. I haven't had a single connection issue with IM, or through Opera.
The camera problem is a software issue, probably related to the flash. Similar problems have occured in early Nokia firmwares.
I'm still not 100 percent happy with the HD2, but then I'm used to the Apptastic iPhone and its plethora of social networking apps. In time HTC will fix the bugs in the device. My only other concern is that Windows Marketplace picks up from the complete pile of s**t that it is at the moment and starts to properly compete with Android and Apple instead of just ripping people off with a paltry array of ho-hum apps.
Just an FYI, HTC have confirmed that the fault with the camera is hardware related, and not software related and the only way of remedying this is to send the device back for replacement/repair.

Hi all,
I have had my HTC Hero for a little over 1 week now and feel compelled to write a small piece on how I am finding it.
As a bit of background I do not consider myself an expert on mobile phones and am not constantly swapping and changing every other week for the latest model. I generally upgrade my phone at the end of my contract every year for the latest model and have almost always felt disappointed a couple of days (or sometimes hours in) about how little mobile phones have moved on over the years (Nokia E71) or about how fiddly they are to use and how often they crash/need updating/need rebooting etc. (TyTnII).
In fact, I have not been as excited about a phone after a week since, well, ever! Everything about the handset just works.
The choice and selection of apps available is fantastic and are all so easily accessible via the Android market place that I am wondering how I ever coped without it before.
The interface is sooo slick and user-friendly with virtually no slow down that I have ever noticed. The ability to layout your homepage over 7 screens with links to all your most used functions without delving into menus has already saved me no end of time.
Compared with my previous WM phones this is soooo much more stable that I haven't even felt the need to play with additional ROMs.
Add on to that the soon-to-be-released Android 2.0 (hopefully with Google maps navigator) and I genuinely think that mobile phone OS's have come on more in the past 12 months than they have in the last 5 years.
The above isn't supposed to be a comprehensive review, and I realise their is nothing new their for the XDA regulars but thought I would post my feelings on the handset incase anyone stumbled upon these forums and wanted some first hand feedback.
Excellent overview. Modern phones like HTC and many others are micro computers with ability to make/recceive mobile calls and much more. I enisage that future updates will also have ability to make voice calls with GTalk etc.
One vital thing designers have lleft for future model is front camera for video calling. I experimented video call with sipdroid , worked well but almost nogood without a front camera.

you mean since android was published?
Will any future updates allow calls to come through while browsing or emailing?

I can certainly browse and make calls and email on my Hero - all at the same time. I believe every Android device on the market can do that - with the exception of the Moto Droid on VZW
Are you referring to the Moto Droid on Verizon in the US?
I just wish somebody would write something for vBulletin to make it easier to navigate xda-developers forum from Android! <hint><hint>
I tested this myself, and calls do not come through while a data connection is ongoing with EDGE or GPRS connection.
The data connection drops if I have a high speed connection (3G) if a call comes through, to give priority to the call, as it should.
There is obviously no problem when connected over WIFI.
After some searches I learned that this is a 2G network problem. As Android is using the data link much more then my previous WiMo phone, it is something to consider. So if I expect an important phonecall, I close the Mobile Network connection.
Someone else who can clarify what is exactly going on ?
Hmmmmmm. Now I'm confused. My calls are not coming through while data connecting. And my call waiting is not working property either. Either nothing or it works if you see it but not hear any bleeps.
I get several missed call alerts every day?
Right people, b4 you all get into a hissy fit, this is a network thing not a hero thing. If the network is dealing with your data connection they will redirect the voice call. unfortunately that's how it is.. But then again, why would I want someone interrupting my redtube time.......
Yes, that confirms my observations, that this would be a shortcoming of how 2G networks are setup. This is not a fault of the Hero or the Android OS.
It is just that Android is using the data connection just much more intensively.
It would be the same for the iPhone, remember that many people complained about lost calls when it just came out ?
The signal isn't brilliant, but on my old Moto workhorse phones, it's always full signal for the same network, side by side. The Hero does lack somewhat in signal quality. It's one of the pitfalls with this phone. The antennae isn't as strong as the old style phones.

seems to be the case with most (if not all) smartphones
I have to agree with Cyberkid. I also only change my phone at the end of a contract so I don't keep terribly up to date with the latest happenings in the mobile phone world. However, I knew I wanted an Android phone (mainly for the Google Navigation) when my contract came up for renewal and the Hero was the only one on offer from Three UK.
This phone is amazing. I had a TyTNII last and while very whizzy and impressive at first glance the whole thing was just an excercise in frustration. Yes, you could do all sorts of stuff with it but everything was awkward or just plain difficult to do.
For example, in the 18 months I had it I never managed to get connected to a public wifi hotspot. It'd tell me it was connected but nothing would be accessible.
This just does it. Wifinder tells me what's available and just connects to it with no fuss at all. Everything else seems to be just as easy.
Yes, it does lag a bit sometimes, mainly as far as I can see because it keeps non running programs in memory. I know it's not supposed to make any difference but the phone speeds up noticeably if I kill the apps I'm not using.
The only other problem I've found is the camera which is truly atrocious. The delay between pressing the button and the picture actually being taken is such that it's pointless taking a picture of anything that is moving at all, even slowly. I tried taking a picture of my daughter the other day as she was walking across the room and she was out the door before the shutter clicked.
Hopefully the new 2.1 rom will do something towards fixing this.

2.1 (or indeed a lot of custom roms) do speed up the phone loads and the camera problem is gone too.

Hi !
My first htc was the cruise , then I went to Touch hd and Iphone 3g .Now I want to go back to htc but what I am reading on the forum is really scary
What happend ? is it complicated for htc to deliver a phone that works without all this bugs ? camera , sms , mail , the sound ,the keyboard !!
That is everything........and no uppdate ??? I am really embarrassed . I have been waithing such a long time for winmo phone that doesent have the limitation of the Iphone . Htc should be here talking to everyone that allready bought the phone but they don't
I am disappointed and dont want waithing another year , should I just go for it ? do you think uppdates will fix the issues ?
best regards / equalness
I think you don't need to worry about it.
No phone is perfect, it's interesting to solve all the problems of you, we can use soft or other methods
so don't hesitate now

There's nothing wrong with the HD2, it's a perfectly capable phone and leagues above previous HTC offerings as it is those phones offered by other leading phone manufacturers. It's not 100% perfect, but xda-developers is your friend.
This phone is the perfectest there is out there Sure, it has some issues, but that makes it even more desirable in my eyes since I love tuning it. Problem is, when the only place you read about the HD2 is XDA you might get the wrong impression.
You want safe and boring, but still not perfect (some say far from it even), stay with the iphone.
Lol i know im re-iterating what these guys have said but
Seriously half the fun of this phone is making it perfect for you. I haven't even added any contacts yet and ive had it for 2 days Lol.
Hi. I'm also interested in getting the HTC HD2 for my upgrade. As I understand from following this forum, there are some bugs (the one that concerns me the most is the sms-not-sent bug). I haven't ordered it yet because I'm a bit worried. Do these bugs happen to every one? Or only unlucky ones? Will they be fixed in the future firmware update from HTC? Thanks.
p.s. this will be my first smart phone so I will be a noob at flashing ROMs (or whatever it's called)
Got mine - Love It - Hate the Bugs
Got my HD2 2 days ago from Vodafone - Unbranded and what a real nice
device it is.
Playing a video on this is sweet with the screen so large, Manged to watch
2 films on it while working on pc no problem.
Very upset over the bugs, I have the Camera Red Tint and today a few txts I sent didn't arrive for ages, txt was working perfectly fine so could be
something I installed.
If you love messing around changing things around in Windows Mobile go for it. If you just want a phone for calls and txting grab an Iphone.
You can spend hours just going through settings, installing apps and games on this thing.
Sending mine back to Vodafone though as the camera issue is bad, Will wait till all the bugs have been ironed out, 1 or 2 months, may even get a better deal then.

I have had many HTC phones. I have the TP2 and also the HD2 right now. I have had the HD2 for a week and I will not go back to any other phone. This phone is great. I have not had any of the issue people have talked about, ie. calendar, pink camera or sms. There is also a ROM update already for the phone from HTC that people say fixed these bugs. My wife has an iPhone, I must say it is a nice phone and works great if all you want is a phone call and a text message. This phone blows the iPhone out of the water, the screen makes it so much easier to type with big fingers, and the processor is so much faster than iPhone. I say get it, you will be glad you did.
Well I just purchased an IPhone 3GS 32 GB here in Australia, just the other day as my HD had packed it in...., I'd been wondering exactly what was goin on with the HD2 as well as I was reading some scary posts, but since there was nothing available in Australia officially, so nothing with full warranty, I decided to go the Iphone path. A week with the Iphone and I've got to say there's alot of things that dissapoint me and and a few that impress me, having to sync with Itunes was something that **** me off straight away !!, it's limited in it's browsing of the internet, no true multi tasking !!, and the way that it's locked down by apple, and if you want to customize it you have to "jailbreak" it, which can void warranty if something goes pear shape, it's just limited in many more ways !!. However If you use WM 6.5 or evan 6.1, you have way more functionality and it's alot more like walking around with a PC in your pocket !!. Something I will say that Impresses me about the Iphone is the appstore !!, the myriad of content that's available is mind-boggling !, yeh, sure there's probably alot of it is ****, though there's still alot of great software there !!, and it's well organized to !!, If only WM, could offer something like that, and is it a fair critiscism that there is apparently no official graphics drivers available from Qualcomn, for the snapdragon ??, How are WM developers meant to develope for WM, when the processor maker can not supply relevant info to help them ....??

I think that's quite a ridiculous answer when talking about a €500+ device (let that roll in your mind a bit longer, a €500+ device).
It has quite a few quirks and flaws that weren't nulled by the latest update, i've been using mine for 3 weeks now and i am really trying hard to get used to it, but the amount of crashes each day is quite disappointing. Luckily i got it for free by winning a contest, because i'd be mad as hell if i payed the full list price for it.
On the other hand, this device still has this enormous wow-factor. A shiny and speedy all-in communications center in a stunning form factor.
Thank you for the comments ! it really help.I will wait to see how the uppdate is doing ;-) ... and yes I like twiking but to make the phone nicer not to make the simple functions work as they should .The phone should at least behave as it says in the documentation dont you think so ?

Camera - a minor problem that appears under certain scenarios and is easily amended, even without HTC's planned fix. Also THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT SPANS MANY MODERN SMARTPHONES!!! iPhone, Samsung, HTC, etc. etc... most phone cameras are cheap.
Mail - I know of no problems
SMS - a problem that affected a small number of users - has since been patched.
Sound - no idea. There seem a small number of people who are unhappy for some reason. Most are very happy.
Keyboard - there seems to have been a VERY small number of faulty touch screens, for the most part though this 'problem' seems to be limited to people who heard that the iPhone had something called a 'capacitivitively screen' or something, so they wanted one. They then wet their pants when they realised the differences to a resistive screen and cried a bit. Most people are VERY happy with the screen.
If you find a forum for ANY phone without complaints both genuine and pointless whining, congratulations, you've found a heavily censored manufacturer-run forum.
If you find a phone with no bugs, especially at launch, congratulations, you must have found a very basic dumbphone - there's not a single bug-free smartphone out there.

What a laughable reply, do you work for HTC or own shares in the company? The keyboard is RUBBISH, pure and simple. It doesn't matter if you're coming from a multi-tap, QWERTY, resistive or even another capacative screen....typing on the HD2 is a truly dreadful experience. The camera I can live with, it is perfectly acceptable for a mobile phone in my opinion. The volume, distortion and cracks/pops through the earpiece and speakerphone is a DISASTER and the text problem hasn't been fixed so far as I'm aware. There is no 'patch' which perfectly addresses the text problem.
The screen? Yep, brilliant.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realise that yours was the only opinion that mattered. Just because you don't have the mental or physical ability to use a keyboard, it doesn't mean that nobody else does. It is fine for me. If it was "rubbish" that would not be the case. Therefore, it is not rubbish. If there is any "rubbish" involved, I'd try looking on the other side of the glass screen.
The camera you can live with? Well whoop-de-doo. I tell you what, when I care one damn bit what some random whiner can live with, I'll drop you an SMS. And that SMS will arrive instantly since *I* do not have any such problems. Nor do I have any problems with my sound.
Perhaps you should learn that a sample size of exactly one - you - in no way scales up to the entire population (thank god!). Following the incredible debating example you have set, perhaps I should now accuse you of being a Mac shareholder?

Well how come the SMS problem thread is one of the biggest and still on the front page if there is a patch for it? Anyway, that aside, I'd pay good money to see ANYONE enter large chunks of text on the HD2 at any kind of decent speed using the on-screen keyboard....without making more errors than on any phone and any keyboard EVER made. Either you have the world's tiniest fingers, you don't text or email a lot, you will defend shoddy products to the death for some bizarre reason or you're on the HTC payroll. I've not met anyone in the flesh who can get along with the HD2 keyboard. Not one person. The only few who can seem to reside on this forum.

A lovely, juvenile reply there. Well done. *thumbs up*
I don't own any Apple products and never have. I also actually OWN the HD2 so I'm not some internet basher. I thought it sounded fab on paper and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. OK so perhaps the audio problems on my handset are a fault - although others have reported it too - but the keyboard is surely the same on ALL HD2s? Again, there are lots of people on this forum slating the keyboard. So those of you who claim to be able to type perfectly on it and are more than happy to live with a phone that is quite frankly bug-ridden to the point of being unusable by business professionals....just make me wonder, that's all. I imagine a group of tech-crazy teenagers who must have the latest thing, not people who rely on their phone to actually use as a workhorse. I need to be productive and the HD2 requires way too much additional work for me to be able to do that. I am quite happy to tinker and tweak apps and I do expect there to be bugs on a phone, just not MAJOR ones such as an unusable keyboard and deafening call volume.

Why can you HD2 fanboys not just accept that some people have issues with the phone? Unless everyone agrees the phone is 100% perfect you have a hissy fit.
I have roughly 24 hours to decide if I want to return this phone. I realize it's still a bit early, but I haven't seen much in the way of custom Rom development aside from an unofficial lineage build (which I have not tried because of the twrp issues) I bought this in hopes it would attract developers and become much like what the nexus phones used to be. I was specifically told by an essential representative that this phone was "yours to root and customize". That's all fine and dandy if I was a developer, but unfortunately that isn't the case. It also lacks software features, which I expected, but figured custom roms would solve that. I love the build quality, I'm ok with the camera quality, and the price was definitely acceptable. Today I experienced missed calls that never got through to me. Not sure if that's a Verizon issue or what. So I guess I'm looking for some quick input from you guys. Do you think development will take off? I'm not counting on essential for that. And also, has anyone experienced calls or texts not coming through? Aaaaaaand GO! ?

It is, there is RR, Uber, LOS, XenonHD all in testing phases
That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. Thanks for the quick reply
never had issues with missed calls or texts (ATT here). If you purchased this recently at the discounted price (400-500), then I don't think you'll find something this aesthetically nice and with these features. And as Gimme stated, rom development is well on its way, especially with the sales over the last month there will be more support both from devs and 3rd market accessory suppliers (crossing my fingers).
YMMV, I never had a phone this nice before.
RR rom running perfect?
Where can I find these roms? The rom development section only has lineage
