Ever since updating to this ROM a strange behavior would occur intermittently. Normally when navigating, BOTH BUTTONS stay lit and function as they are supposed to. When the malfunction occurs only ONE BUTTON stays lit and the other button that is not lit behaves as if it is stuck; the only way to unstick the button is to sleep/wake the phone or hold the Power button and hit Home to escape. It may return to normal for awhile but will return eventually. Any suggestions?
I tried searching for the solution but could not find an answer.
I have already tried:
1. flashing back to stock JPY with ODIN with repartition; result-same intermittent problem
2. Flashing darky rom again: result-same intermittent problem
3. Clearing data and cache from both ROMS: result-same intermittent problem

There is another thread - Touch Screen Keys "Menu & Back Buttons" that sounds similar but it doesn't specify the exact symptoms I'm describing.
I'm beginning to think it's ROM related vs hardware since the problems with problematic touch keys on any thread I find always mention "Darky ROM" describing "when" the problems start occurring.

Darky problem why not ask Darky .
jje
This morning I flashed Darky 8.1-NoWipe. The problem still occurs intermittently, but recovery from problem is not quite as annoying; now I can get the "non-lit" button to get unstuck faster by hitting it a couple of times and pausing in between those times. This behavior further leads me to believe this is more of a firmware prob.
When I use SGS Tools and enter Touchscreen Firmware Version I get the following info:
Phone's TSP FW Version: 22
Part's TSP FW Version: 22
TSP threshhold: 40
Phone's Touch key FW Version: 0xa9
Part's Touch key FW Version: 0x4
Current Firmware:
Model: I9000T
PDA: I9000XXJPY
PHONE: I9000UGJL2 (problem occurs also with Darky stock JPY)
CSC: I9000OXAJPX
This behavior further leads me to believe this is more of a firmware prob.

Is that not the answer its the rom one of many many user problems with that rom .

Hi, just to add
on my phone it reads
Phone's Touch key FW Version: 0xa9
Part's Touch key FW Version: 0xa9
Maybe hitting touch key FW update button will solve the problem
This is a hardware problem
My phone started doing this also...the return button would work sometimes and other times would go off and act as stuck! Firmware version did not help. It would do it on stock 2.2, even 2.2.1 or Darkys.
I have sent it back to Samsung for repair. They know of this issue. Call Samsung or go to your nearest Samsung repair center.
I'm not completely convinced it is a hardware problem.
I can return to a working unit if I re partition and go back to eclair. Also the symptoms improve from darky 8.0 to 8.1. I also pm'd a guy with a similar problem and he went back to eclair and finally to doc rom without the problem re occurring.
I'm not ruling out either but would like to continue to hear about other's experiences.
Did the rep who diagnosed your problem say what part failed exactly?

i made a thread about this like yesterday, but my problem was that my menu button would activate on its own. This is my second sgs from bell, and this one came with JL2 and was having that problem. I flashed seeARMS rom to see if it would go away, and it didnt. So what i did to fix my problem was to go to stock JL2 with odin, used sgstools to update the firmware of the touchkeys, and that worked fine. Reflashed seeARMS and it still works fine. So just go back to JL2, firmware upgrade, flash back to darky's and it hopefully it'll work.
I'm tempted to perform the touch screen firmware upgrade via sgstools but I read a thread where it actually broke one guy's keys and I don't want to worsen the problem.
How many out there have performed the touch screen firmware upgrade successfully? Better yet, how many of you had something go wrong with the touch screen firmware upgrade?

Guys just stick with Official stock rom 2.2.1 JPY.
It's the best firmware up-to-date. I've had my fair share of Custom roms. But I've found that this firmware, JPY is the most stable one yet. Custom roms f*up core apps like camera, email etc which later on won't work with Market apps like
Plus customs roms you have to update like twice a week!!! it gets really annoying...
120 + apps installed and no lag jPY ftw!!
My phone reads:
Phone's Touch key FW version: 0xa9
Part's Touch key FW version: 0xff
Currently on Darkys v8, trasigs kernel
PDA: XXJPY
PHONE: XXJPY
CSC: XAJPX
And mine is working without any problems m8, good luck
It doesnt make sense why firmware would do this to only one of the soft buttons!
If it was a firmware issue both the buttons would have the issue not just one!
On mine it was only the return button....i started having this issue after they replaced the main board due to bad internal SD card. I noticed once the phone warmed up it would do it. If I left it alone for a bit so the screen cooled down, it would be fine. So, heat was causing the issue. It was doing this on the stock firmware the phone came loaded with JL2 and Darkys 8.0.
I'm the one who wrote it broke my buttons when i tried updating. However, I also said that I flashed back to JL2 Bell Official, then updated the fw for the buttons and went back to Darky's and since then, my buttons have worked perfectly. Try that!
Short Version: Flash back to JL2 from Bell, update Phone's Touch key FW version, flash back to Darky. All is well.

I ended up flashing to the stock publicly official firmware for my device.
Since I have an I9000t, that meant jl1 firmware.
I then applied the touch key upgrade (that moved me to 0x5) and proceeded to move back to Darky's ROM 8.1. No button problems since.

I'm having the same issue and the only way to partially solve it is to restart the phone: it would work for a while but after that they would lock again

Well, I updated my I9000T with that I9000UGJL2 and after Odin ended, the phone stayed there with a black screen, as if it had no power!
I've tried every combination of buttons possible and it won't start up, not even show an error message or something!
What can I do?

Flashing is a whole other topic. Hopefully, you had 3 button recovery mode already working before you tried flashing. If you did, you can try the techniques posted on the forums to get into 3 button recovery mode to reflash such as:
1. Pulling battery. Hold power button.insert battery and try volume down + Home + Power
2. Buy a usb jig on ebay that will put your device in recovery download mode
3. Search for other topics on bricking your phone or getting into 3 button recovery.
Also, to answer your other question. The reason why I upgraded the touchscreen firmware with the stock rom such as jl1 instead of any of the nonofficial newer roms out there was simply because I read some stories where people lost complete touchscreen control if they performed the upgrade with the newer roms.
My philosophy is always to go stock official before performing touchscreen firmware upgrade since there aren't many ways to troubleshoot if something goes wrong.

I've tried this on my wave and SGS the version of the touchscreen firmware didnt change but it did say it was successful
hi, I have an i9505 which I recently restored to stock (I previously had cm12.1). I flashed germany 4.4.2 kitkat and it worked fine.
I did all the updates using OTA, which at the end updates the phone to 5.0.1. Now I have the latest version (XXUHOH2), but I noticed that the back button doesn't work anymore, it doesn't even light up when I press it. The menu button works fine instead. I factory restored the phone through official recovery but it didn't change anything. Is it possible that the back button suddenly stopped working after I updated to the latest version because of an hardware failure, or is it a software problem? The phone hasn't dropped off the table once, and even with the first lollipop update the button worked.
i solved this issue by installing another firmware (XYHOE1)... it seems that my phone doesn't like the german one
Hi. I am having the same issue. I got the OTA update today and 5.0.1 was successfully installed on my phone. However, after the reboot, the back button stopped working and wont even light up. Is there any workaround aside from installing that firmware that you mentioned?
Will surely appreciate your response.
I haven't found a workaround, i tried both normal and black edition OH2 but the issue remains the same... however I flashed a custom firmware (and thus keeping OH2 bootloader and modems) and it works perfectly... so I think it's a bug found in OH2 firmwares which happens in some phones... flashing previous version of any firmware should fix the issue.

Please help me. I'm experiencing the same issue. I updated my phone to OH2 and after it finished updating, my back and menu button stopped functioning. Then received another update (OJ2) via Kies3, hoping that it will solve the issue I encountered in OH2 but nothing has changed. And now I downgraded my phone to a previous version of Lollipop (OC6) and it still not working.
Before updating my phone, I know and I'm sure my back and menu buttons are working fine that moment and like you, I haven't dropped my phone since I bought it so I'm sure this isn't a hardware problem. :crying::crying: Please help me. A big THANKS! :good:

Same problem for me. i tried even a Pit reflesh and dowgrade.
Same thing happened to me. I did the upgrade today, 24th Nov 2015, to Android 5.0.1 - Baseband versionXXUHOJ2 and my menu and back keys are gone. Very infuriating! Will Samsung fix this, or do I have to spend hours of my own time?
I have found a workaround, not ideal but helps short term. Go to Settings > My Device >Accessibility >Dexterity and interaction. Then switch on the Assistant menu. That gives you a little pop up square - available all the time - with 12 buttons including BACK and MENU.
I'm having the same issue. I came back to Kit kat coz I'm tired of Lollipop :silly:

Any updates or solutions as yet please?
I had a perfectly working Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505), then after a recent update was pushed out, the softkeys now do not function. Soooo frustrating...... my confidence in Samsungs' Updates are now dented, I shall seriously think twice about allowing any updates through.
Hey Guys,
I've recently updated the firmware of my GT-I9506 (GALAXY S4 LTE-A) with OTA firmware I9506XXUDOK1 (22-12-2015). After reboot I've found everything is working fine except both touch buttons (menu and back). Both keys are simply dead No back light no functionality of touch keys. I even tried hard reset but no success.
Currently the test mode *#23663# shows the following detail
Phone's Touch key FW version:0x12
Parts Touch key FW version:0x12
If I tries to "Touch key FW update" button it shows following message
"No want to update. they are have the same firmware version."
Please help me, this is really frustrating.
Thank you in advance

Just read the thread I posted. Users there had the same problem.
@Lennyz1988 I've gone through the complete thread and I've tried almost all stock roms available at sammobile.com for i9506 t-mobile Germany and along with it I've also tried CM 12.1 but unfortunately unable to recover menu/back buttons.
Currently I'm on build i9506XXUBNA2 (v4.3) and following test details of touch keys
Phone's touch key F/W version:0x10
Part's touch key F/W version:0x12
Can you please help me how to downgrade part's touch key F/W version to 0x10 as well.

Where can I find the full firmware version of EMUI 4.1 for the US version? I want to rollback from EMUI 5.0. Thanks.
I found it here, under downloads there's an official rollback package with instructions in english. I also used it to go back to stock after I flashed N from firmware finder and it woked just fine.

By the way, why are you rolling back? N makes this tablet 10 times better. I'm on M now and I can hardly stand it.

The rollback files are for the BTV-DL09. Are they compatible with the BTV-W09 U.S. Wifi only version?
I am having several issues with Nougat. Bluetooth and Wi-fi are not as stable, I preferred the lower 1900X1200 resolution which doesn't work with Nougat and I have a couple of favorite apps that do not work with Nougat. I also just noticed the navigation button does not work if you have the navigation bar active. With the old version it worked.

Sorry, I thought the us version was also lte like the eu version. In this case I honestly don't know, you could just try and see what happens. I'm pretty sure you can't brick you install a bad package the system won't let you (just like it won't let me install some update packages from firmware finder, I tried).
Also, you could try to contact the official support, in the release notes it says that you can roll back by contacting them.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are working fine after doing a factory reset. And forcing 1200x1920 resolution and 320dpi have resolved many of the issues I was having with the update. Apps now display in tablet mode. Dice Player no longer works, but MS Player and BS player work fine. I'm not a fan of the recent apps view in Nougat, but maybe it will grow on me.

I want to go back to marshmallow ,I press and hold Volume Up,Volume Down and power button
after a few moments I get the error << Update failed>>.I follow the instructions putting the update.app on the sd card. The problem comes because my model is CPN and not BTV-DL09?
Any idea?. The build number is CPN-L09C100B012.

A quick search on Sammobile.com shows there are 2 newer firmware versions for the S8+ using XEU than the one your are using.
You can try flashing the latest (AQF7) via Odin and see if that helps.
Follow the instructions for using Odin at the bottom of the download page - if you dont know already
And, of course, make a backup of your phone before you start.
