So I am sure a lot of us Incredible owners have fresh 2 year Verizon contracts. When I signed up they told me I had 30 days to decide if I wanted to keep it.
I LOVE my Incredible, but now the EVO is coming out just before my 30 day window to switch. It is basically the same exact phone with a larger screen and I am very tempted.
Is anyone else in the same boat? And if so what made you decide one way or the other.
I will add a view points I am considering.
EVO +
Sprint will cost about $10 less a month vs Verizon
Larger Screen
LCD screens do not get burn in. I am reading that AMOLEDs do, a lot of nexus one users are reporting it.
Already Rooted
Option to disable SenseUI
Sharper looking text
Front camera
Incredible +
Better network coverage
Smaller in pocket
Screen has better colors
Optical pad(EVO has no optical pad or trackball)
Smoother video recording
Possibly better battery life?!
The fact that I'd have to pay 350 to cancel my contract, then buy the phone through Sprint and start a new contract and loose my 5-6 years of service I've had through Alltel/Verizon.
It's not worth it IMO to cancel and then pay to get the phone. If my contract was over however, I would have considered going to Sprint and getting the Evo. But in actuality to get the equivalent plan that I have on Verizon, it would cost alot more if I pay for the 4G...and IMO if you get that phone, and don't pay for 4G, it's a waste (unless you truly don't use apps or web).
Edit: But in the end it comes down to what you truly want.
You can't get the Evo, without paying the 4G extra $10
You can cancel your contract within the first 30 days. Without penalty. Maybe a restocking fee at most.
Verizon:
450min & Unlim txt $59.99
Unlim data $30
Total: $90+tax&fees
Sprint EVO plan.
450min & Unlim txt & data $69.99
EVO $10
Total: $80+tax&fees

You forgot to put under the Evo, limited 3G
If Sprint had any reception where I live, I'd do it. Seems like it'd be a fun phone to get and not a bad price point either.
My opinion, for what it is worth
I would not do it simply because when we (VZW) starts deploying LTE with 100mbps 4g and passes Sprint's slower WiMAX deployment, HTC will have an even cooler and faster unit (I know this because I have seen a proto of it that was here at corperate a few days ago, just a plastic model with no name yet but it looks cooooooool, salesmen) you will be kicking yourself for having to flop back to get the new one. Also look at if Sprint has deployed WiMAX where you are anyway, probably not. Also coverage, what good is it if call quality suffere ????

That's a good point. I would weigh my options if I were in his position. He's gonna need to find out who provides the best coverage. I'd recommend a one year contract.
Comes down to network coverage and quality. Both are great phones. But I'll stick with Verizon. Nation wide LTE by 2013. They have the pls and the means. Not to mention the incredible is perfect for me. I don't video chat with anyone. Overall the evo isn't that much more appealing that I'd want it over the incredible. Oh almost forgot... I don't want an enormous phone.

The way I look at it, I got a heavily subsidized device and a hefty ETF.
I paid $99 (bought through Wirefly, $149 and $50 cash back from Bing). The ETF is a two year deal, prorated, at $350 from the start and working it's way down.
If I want out halfway through, I have to pay Verizon $175. Add $99 to that, and the cost of the phone to me is $274. Chances are I can sell the phone for close to that to another Verizon subscriber.
I'm playing wait and see for a year - if Sprint's 4G is for real and can hold up to the network traffic, I'll bite. If not, I'm safe.
I wouldn't be so sure your ETF works that way. I know AT&T was $5 a month prorated. So if you went 23 months and canceled your original $180 etf would cost you $65. I know that is how mine worked last month when I paid $90 after 18 months.
I'm willing to change phone like underwear for the right device and I have decided to hold off for now. Some of the biggest factors currently are
- no 4g in my area anyways
- nobody else I know has the front mounted cam for video calls
- size
I had the HD2 for a little over a week and let me tell you, beautiful piece of hardware but its approaching being to big at 4.3". I am thinking something at 4" would be a little better. Even a 3.7" screen is fine height wise, just seems like the Incredible could be wider IMO

Well it's a CDMA phone so let's hope it never finds it's way to the UK!
I'm currently in the US for 3 months and my partner has just picked up the EVO and I have the HD2 (UK model using it here on t-mobile US edge data system) and the device is good, but, having "played" with it for a good few hours there are serious shortcomings with the Android OS (and that's compared to the Winmo 6.5.X on my HD2, YIKES!).
There is a tackyness compared to the solid feel of the HD2. Battery can drain before your eyes (don't know why that is as the unit is 1500mAh). Tried for 2 hours to sync with HTC's PC Suite, but, couldn't get it to work (and I'm no novice! But, I'll get the bXggXr to work). Micro SD slot under the battery. Yes I said UNDER the battery so no card changes on the fly! It's thicker than the HD2. Etc, etc.
I didn't mean this to be a review, but, I'll keep my HD2 for now.
The killer is that it's CDMA.
This phone is junk when you finish with it. It can't be recyled or unlocked for use on other carriers. It's becomes a very expensive piece of waste matter! Oh and the cost $299 with a $100 mail in rebate on a 24 month contract at $110/month (that's 135 pounds after rebate and 75 pounds a month so you pay 1935 pounds in total over the 2 years!!
My Hd2 cost me 10 pounds and 41 a month over 12 months with mobile broadband included on an upgrade.
BTW the telecoms industry here in the US is nothing short of a joke with consumers being ripped of at every opportunity. The problem being that the market is very immature and the consumers don't know any different so they go along with it.
If the US carriers had to compete in Europe then at least 50% would go under very quickly. We don't know how lucky we are.
Nokia doesn't even have a smartphone in the marketplace here!!!!!!!!!!!

Tackyness? The Evo is built like a tank, and weighs just as much as one. The only thing you could consider 'tacky' is the fact that the battery cover gives a little when you push on it. I've never held an HD2, personally, but I do know that the Evo is ridiculously solid, or at least mine is.
Battery life all depends on how you use it. If you keep all of the radios on with maximum screen brightness with all of the apps running, you're obviously going to get some poor battery life. However, there are people who have kept their phone off the charger for over sixty hours without dying.
The Evo isn't the only phone with a microSD card under the battery; HTC did this because the phone is so tightly packed.
Some people like having a thicker phone. I personally enjoy it. As for the etc, etc, I can't imagine what that's referring to.
Even if you don't use it as a phone, the Evo is still an outstanding media player. With Wifi connectivity, the Android marketplace, and a 4.3 inch screen, it beats most portable media players out there.
The cost is $299 with a mail in rebate if you order it from Sprint. Every other store sells the phone for $199 without any rebates involved.
$110 a month? Only if you need the Hotspot functionality, which is easily duplicated by other apps in the marketplace. You don't NEED to pay those $30 a month. Besides, the Overdrive costs $60 a month to use as a hotspot, and that's it's ONLY function. The Evo is only $80 a month to own, which is still much less expensive than an iPhone.
To answer the OP's question.
No, you cannot change sims. No this phone cannot be used overseas. And No, nothing like it has been announced for Europe as of yet. Sorry for the bad news!
As for the above review, I completely disagree. I love the EVO and I paid the full $450 price tag (not eligible for upgrade/new contract.)
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter how wrong it is.
Oh, and $110 a month is probably unlimited data, calling, and texting right?
I pay $65, 450 minutes, unlimited calling to other mobile phones, unlimited data, unlimited texting, and wifi hotspot thanks to rooting. Hell of a good deal to me! I use about 20 minutes a month (non-cell phone calls.)
I also get about 24 hours on a single charge with moderate use. I swap my battery for a fresh one each day at about 20-30%. So yeah, bad battery life? Sure, turn everything to on and to max and play a video for 6 hours and it'll be dead, but I don't do that and get over a days usage.

I'm guessing you work in the industry or very close to it!
In any case my comments, which are of course purely subjective, were for the benefit of the OP who if I am not mistaken is from the UK (as I am) and as such I believe he is better placed to understand the basis of my comments.
Even at $80 a month which equates to $1920 over the 24 month term + $199 up front (total $2119), that's a rediculous amount to pay for a phone you will have to throw away when you are done with it! Even if it is cheaper than the xPhone!

Doesn't the UK typically have cheaper phones? So if this was released in the UK it would likely cost less than it does here in the states. Then again, if you're looking at importing a US phone because it's the fastest Android phone on the market with the biggest screen and a freakin kick stand, then who gives a crap about how much it costs (I sure didn't.) We all buy what we can afford, only the stupid people buy what they can't afford (hence why most American's, and Greece, are in debt. Yes, I just called a country and most American's stupid.)
Hold on there! What's made you all so jumpy about this issue/phone?
My comparison was with my UK eye and I was simply relaying my thoughts to another UK member who probably has a similar eye.
I've been in the states long enough to understand the US perspective on all this, however, trust me when I say it's alien to us europeans.
That doesn't make it wrong or right, just different.
And I understand just how a good quality kickstand plays it's part as well as the difference in the cost of equipment that each market can sustain/support.
But, this phone would not be entertained anywhere else but the US (and I think some carriers in AUS) so that really ends it all right there, doesn't it?
BTW I hope all you Sprint customers are liking the headsets you got with your EVOs!
Only kidding cos I LUV GOLDEN CORRAL and we've got nothing like that!

UK plans and price point will be completely different than the US if they were to have this phone as well right? (Complete hypothetical here, since we know the UK isn't getting this phone, yet.) Plus it would likely be a phone with a swappable sim.
What else about the phone would someone in the UK not like? The 4.3 inch screen? The 8MP rear camera and the front facing camera? The 1ghz Snapdragon processor? The FM Radio? The kickstand? The smooth glass surface? Dual LED flash? Android 2.1? Next generation internet connection?
So the only real negative if it was in the UK, would be the micro SD card under the battery (I've never needed to hot-swap my SD card.), the battery life (mine is over 24 hours a charge with medium-high usage, including hours of streaming Pandora) and the HTC Sync. I've never used the software myself, but I think that there has been an update since release, you might want to give it a go.
Oh, and you knocked Android as an OS as a whole, comparing it to Windows Mobile 6.5 that even Microsoft thinks sucks and has since dropped it. I love the Android OS personally, over BB, WM6.5, and iOS.
Don't try to make him feel better by knocking the EVO because he can't get it in the UK. We know that's what you were trying to do and the thought was nice and all, but the EVO really is the perfect phone.
(Yes, there was sarcasm in there and a jab at fanboyism.)
Its seems that the fine folks at phandroid have stumbled across this little nugget of info tucked neatly away in the fine print of the Samsung Vibrant's shop page.
†On approved credit. $82.50 down payment, plus 3 monthly payments of $82.50, required. 0% APR. Taxes & fees additional. Available only at T-Mobile-owned retail stores; see store for details.

If u do the math that equates to $330. I hope T-Mobile plays it smart and doesn't change the price before launch, because I definitely assumed the off contract price would be $450-$550
In any event, there also seems to be a "REAL" screen cap of the actual price tag on the page before TMO decided to remove it. Here's the link to that also...

Jesus Christ. Do you seriously think that the Nexus One retails for $529 but THIS phone - which is better in every.single.way is going to retail for $330?
That's quite literally one of the stupidest things I think i've read in a long, long time.
Personally, Im pretty sure the phone is going to cost $500+ because the on contract price vs. this supposed on contract price doesn't make sense and this also bucks the trend of previous costs associated with phones of this level.
However, it would be a nice (and courageous) move on TMO's part with this slightly, in comparison, paired down galaxy s model to move units.
Anyway, I thought I would share this sliver of hope with the TMO faithful lol.
This just reminds me of the entire "Project Dark" / EM+ debacle where some blogs reported errors/rumors as facts of an upcoming program. So when EM+ came out, the news wasn't that TMO cut their pricing, it was that they didn't live up to the hype that some bloggers posted about false pricing info.
Same damn thing now. People ARE going to be disappointed if they think that in any reality (normal or alternate) TMO is going to sell this phone for $330 without a contract to recoup the cost of the device.
also, this phone is a $750 phone unlocked:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...w?ie=UTF8&qid=1277908710&sr=8-1&condition=new
If you look at the T-mobile site now it says "125 down, with 3 monthly payments of 125" thus making the phone in the $500 range
as you said, that price has been pulled down, and curently at the bottom of the page is of the info screen (when you go to their web and shop for phones, and then for samsung phones) it shows:
"†On approved credit. $125 down payment, plus 3 monthly payments of $125, required. 0% APR. Taxes & fees additional. Available only at T-Mobile-owned retail stores; see store for details...."
others have reported off contract pricing at $439 / $439 and some at $499
we'll see this week

The Vibrant is defiantly NOT better in every single way.
The Nexus one Has a Bluetooth car dock, No word about anything like that for the Galaxy S phones.
The Nexus One is made out of much much better materials, The vibrant feels cheap in the hand and the body looks cheap, the only thing on the Vibrant that looks better is the screen.
The Vibrant has no FLASH, How some one could make a High end Android phone without a flash is beyond me, but oh well.

I'm just saying it's not better in every way, overall I think it's better in terms of hardware like the GPU, Screen and it's file sharing capabilities.
I would agree with him if the Vibrant was built from better material and had a flash, hell I would call it a Droid and EVO killer if it had a front facing camera in addition to the flash and better material but there is too much missing to call it that.

Author thinks that "[atrix price] seems very agressive". WTF is he smoking?
I wouldn't call it aggressive but I'd call it competitive, given the larger market. They could have asked $299 instead of $199 and they'd have gotten it.
Consider the GalaxyS phones which were still $199 a month ago, and the Atrix is supposed to be more phone (i.e. fingerprint security and a working GPS<G>). Sure, today there are retailers selling the GalaxyS unlocked and off contract for $199 and the cellcos are asking anywhere from a penny to $49...But that's the nature of smoke and mirrors.
I expect, or at least hope, the resellers will be asking $149 to beat AT&T's $199. Not aggressive, but not as piggypiggy as they normally are, either. For an AT&T employee, anything less than "Your firstborn and your wallet" is probably a radical concept.
Remember, they're still trying to convince us that phones which wholesale for $100-200 really cost them $600. (Don't you love the new math?!)
Author thinks that "[atrix price] seems very agressive". WTF is he smoking?[/QUOTE]
He is smoking the highest quality crack rolled up in our hundred dollar bills. "Aggressive"? Yes it's aggressive towards our wallets. If att doesn't straighten out their billing philosophies they will be losing customers like mad. I really hope verizon puts out some cheap unlimited plan and they steal as many iphone users as possible.
I still don't understand the "aggressiveness" over the pricing. $200 is reasonable - it is what I had paid for iPhones every year in the past, and I believe At&t is pricing the Atrix similarly because it is a direct competitor for the iPhone 4.
As far as the laptop dock pricing goes, who cares? The laptop dock is essentially a useless bell/whistle. How many of you own laptops? (most of you probably do) Your laptop is much more powerful than this webtop os. Motorola is just showing what the phone can do. It's an uneccesary extra, especially since the laptop dock requires the tethering plan... when you can just tether to your actual laptop.
Nerds are all up in arms because it's going to cost $500 to showcase their coolness with the latest and greatest piece of redundant technology.
I'm ok with the phone pricing and can't wait for it to come out. I gladly sold and shipped out my iPhone 4 for this beauty. March 6th can't come soon enough.

I apologize if it sounded derogatory. I'm a nerd myself - and a huge one at that.
My implications were, that the dock is essentially nothing more than a keyboard and screen, and it seems silly to piss and moan over a $500 price point. Is it overpriced - Yes. Does the tethering plan tack-on make sense - eh, maybe. Do we need this accessory for any reason other than to show it off (assuming you own a laptop/netbook) - absolutely not. To me it seems more like a no-brainer, and if it evokes any response/thought it is that I am almost glad it's $500 - at least I wont be tempted in the store when I go to pick up the Atrix.

I agree. The only thing I might buy is the multimedia dock with keyboard/mouse, that way i can use it to mess around with what (hopefully) can be a full linux distribution on a phone and make it a second comp of sorts that I can have at my desk.

That's what all the pissing and moaning is about though--that just a screen and a keyboard costs $500. However, being quick to dismiss it and its potential use is what I was referring to when I made the "painting with a broad brush" remark. So, apologies for coming off snarky. I don't mean to bring about any conflict here.
However, I ask you what kind of laptop do you have, and what are its primary uses? I have an HP HDX16 which is a 16" 16:9 laptop workhorse that is a nice do-everything machine when it comes to gaming, media, and graphic design. However, one thing it is not great for is internet surfing. My battery lasts 2 hours tops, it's a larger sized laptop, and while I don't consider it heavy, it is certainly much heavier than the Atrix's lapdock. Maybe you need to carry such a machine with you everywhere you go, but I have a ****ton of textbooks I need to carry in my backpack and the only thing I need to use my laptop for on campus is to surf the web and write notes in a word processor. The Atrix nails that, and makes me salivate at the thought of not having to take a charger with me/8 hours of battery life.
I'm just saying that there's more practical uses for it than just surfin' the internet while you poop.
No, it isn't aggressive. I think 200 should be the limit for subsidized phones; hell it costs around that fir them to buy it anyway (from China or wherever it is made).
If it were really aggressive, the laptop dock wouldn't be more than 150 since it is just a screen and a battery; keyboard.
They also wouldn't charge for tethering. That would actually make it a real threat to other phones.
With the pricing now, I can only see business people and maybe small enterprise or serious bloggers picking this up.

Some of you guys are kidding yourselves regarding the dock. 150 makes little sense. First you have a dock so lets say $60 then a keyboard say $40. Then a HD led screen $150-200 on its own easy. Yes the dock is to expensive, but I would say that it should cost between 200-300 regular. Maybe if ATT was being generous they would make a bundle with the dock costing 150 and the phone 150 with the purchase of the tethering plan. Thats just my .02.
agreed with acPIZZA. I've had a netbook for about a year now. It's nothing special but gets 7-9 hour battery life and allows me to do basic computing tasks on it. Getting the laptop dock would be redundant.

Your pricing is so out of wack I dont' even know where to start.
The laptop dock probably costs them $100 to manufacture. I've put projects like this together, so I'm pretty confident in this cost structure from a CM perspective. This is just them gouging the early adopters. It will probably come down to 2-300 pretty fast, and probably under 200 toward the end.

How much does a good laptop battery go for nowadays?
Ultimately, they're here to make money. Of course it's going to be "high" compared to their production price. =/

I never said it wouldn't be. My point was that the previous poster was putting together consumer products and making an incorrect assumption.
The phone is priced at a steal, the accessories not so much. If you're looking for just the phone this is a great deal.
In the case of the Pixel 3a, it is basically the Return Of Nexus - remember the Nexus 5 and even Nexus 6? The Pixel 3a has been showing up with some jaw-dropping price tags - as low as (don't faint) $299 unlocked/no carrier. (That is a price I saw with my own eyeballs.) This is pricing I have not seen as of late without substantial compromises. While the 3a has compromises, they aren't the ones you would expect.. While it doesn't support wireless charging, it *does* support fingerprint unlocking (coming from the S7 - which also supports fingerprint unlocking, this is one feature it would have hurt to lose. While it lacks wireless charging(which the S7 Snapdragon supports), it is also a feature I do not use. It still supports USB charging - though it does trade in USB A for USB C (it does include the proper cabling, though) - therefore, it's a quibble. The features it lacks are ones I didn't use - and some of the features it has (the camera, for example) are - quite bluntly - overkill. Despite the $299 price, it is nearly too MUCH phone - which I'm not used to even thinking - let alone saying - for a phone at this price aimed squarely at the US.
I ordered mine (at $399). I am betting that the $299 figure is if you are trading in a phone. I am not doing that. $399 is a good price point. I would have paid another $50 if they had decided to make the battery removable. I should be getting my phone tomorrow. Hopefully the rootz start soon!
Our family is getting two, basically for free, from T-Mobile, for my daughters, and I'll probably be getting an aXL for myself.
Excellent replacement for an ageing OG Pixel and a quirky as heck and frustrating S8., and the aXL will make an excellent backup device for me.
This phone makes a heck-of-a-lot of sense to me. First, average consumers will have access to a better camera than the iPhone at roughly half the price. For too long, I avoid recommending Android to eager iPhone users because most Android cameras suck on mainstream phones.
Second, I don't think wireless charging is deal breaker for most (and it's not for me). I'd much rather have quick charge than slow wireless charging.
Finally, the CPU is a Snapdragon 6xx, but I don't think the average user would notice one bit. Maybe here on XDA, we can quibble over the benefits of one CPU vs the next, but for average daily use, I don't think anyone will notice (except that the battery will last longer)
I think the price at $400 for possibly the best camera on the market with a nice big notch-free screen, USB-C, good battery life and timely Android updates could be a big reason this sells well (if they actually market it)
I think this is going to be my Moto G5+ replacement. I'm tiring of the subpar camera.
After regretting paying 700 for a S7 3 years ago, i'm just done paying that much for a phone. This is exactly what i'm looking for. For those that want better CPU/RAM/SD card slot, you can pay just a little more for a OnePlus 6T. I don't like that the 3a is limited to 64GB of storage with no SD, but in all honesty I don't see that as a real world issue as I rarely if ever find myself needing the extra storage I currently have.
I'm 100% confident root solutions will come quickly too.
My Droid Turbo is definitely showing it's age but Felipe's ROMs and kernel have kept it going. I'll miss wireless charging but gain a great camera. Other options include a Mix 3 which seems appealing save for MMS issues with Verizon, OnePlus 7 if I can limp along until then or hope for another Pixel 3 discount. Replacement displays and other hardware should be much less expensive for the 3a down the road than the other options.
Good news, someone on reddit just confirmed that the bootloader can be unlocked the same way as all previous Pixel phones. Let the games begin!
Why? A great camera is my #1 priority, and #2 is rootable/ROMable because I keep my phones for more than 2 years and want updates. I'm not going to pay Pixel 3 type of prices.

BTW, just saw the $299 price, it's on BestBuy if you activate the phone "today" on Sprint. $350 if you activate on Verizon or AT&T. Anyone saw trade-in deals?

I don't lend any legitimacy to prices through carriers other than Google itself. I know with Sprint, you are paying a price to LEASE the phone and then have to pay to own it at the end of that lease (usually 2 years). I would rather pay my $399 and own it outright without having to pay anything else later.
The unlocked version at Best Buy is not discounted, however, they're offering a $100 BB gift card with purchase, so I just pulled the trigger on the XL and I'll be picking it up today. I'd rather have $100 at BB than $100 at Google Play Store, which Google is offering as well.
I looked at the Google store and it looks like I will effectively be getting it for $299 since I will get a $100 fi credit after I activate the phone. Can't beat that!
Woohoo, got mine... the direct-connect data sync is pretty sweet. It's still updating my apps but this is the easiest phone transition i've ever done. Decided I won't bother with unlocking the bootloader until i'm ready to root (which I imagine won't be too long)
My daughter was begging for a new phone for her 15th birthday. She's been on iphone forever - hand me downs from her mom. I hate supporting iphones. We looked at the specs on this compared to the xr, and she agreed this one looked good - so we bought one yesterday at Best Buy. I didn't even know it came with a $100 best buy gift card, but I wanted to see it in person before buying (otherwise I'd have ordered from Google), and I'm glad I did.
I have a oneplus 6t; I'm curious to see how this phone compares. I'm so proud my kid wanted to switch to android.

The $299USD hitch is that you activate ASAP with AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint. No transfer or trade-in required. I inquired because I would be coming from Tracfone/T-Mobile - I would be whacked with the $399 (full bill) price tag (Pixel 3a in Just Black)). Still cheaper than even a Galaxy S9 or Note 9 by $200USD - an S10e by $350USD - in Prism Black in either case. Just about half the price of a Note 9 - and *less* than half the price of the floor S10e. And unlike the S10e, the Q beta is an option from the jump.

We're on the fence right now between a 6T or the 3a XL to replace a Nexus 6P--which, with it's second battery, is still working but approaching 4 yrs (purchased first week). Two months ago I bought a MOTO Z3Play to replace my Nexus 5X which had mobo replaced twice. Now (because of the possibility of wifi calling on AT&T prepaid), I wish I'd remembered this phone was coming out. Z3P doesn't have anywhere near the radio I thought MOTO would give me.
Please report back re the 6t vs 3a once you get a chance to get a feel for it. TIA.
(Proud of your kid, too! I keep an iphone SE for wifi calling as our reception on every carrier is often zero in our house.)

Not just those carriers. If you are a FI customer, google will credit you back $100 after you activate. So I am basically getting it for $299 as well.
Getting so good feedback with the 3A's. Hope it's gonna be mostly positive. Crossing my fingers.
I've got a 6T also, had the 3XL when it released but the combo of horrid notch and 1k price point sent me back to OnePlus. This price makes it all more palatable and I did like the software and camera so I'm going it another go. My tracking shows Saturday, I'll try and post after I've had a chance to flog it enough to get a feel for what's on offer.
