help, cant see usb hdd plugged into shield over the network - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, ive enabled the over local network option, but still cant see the storage. However when i try to disable the over local network option, the shield just sits there on "setting up" but doesnt appear to do anything.
Can anyone help, as i have a 1tb drive plugged into the back that i wanted to copy media onto.
Thanks

How is the drive formatted? That could be part of the problem.

Storage card erased

Today, while tethered to my laptop, I unplugged the micro USB cable from my Imagio before actually pressing the "Disconnect" button in Internet Sharing.
Normally I press the "Disconnect" button and then "safely remove"/eject the drive that subsequently pops up in Windows, but that take a few seconds, and, like, I have stuff to do! I suppose I just wanted to see what would happen.
Well, it apparently corrupted the file structure on my storage card, a 16GB Sandisk. Now, the phone won't even recognize it, and when I tether the phone, the laptop asks to reformat, which I haven't done in case the data can be recovered.
Besides some pictures, the data isn't irreplacable, but I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Any recommendations for a free data recovery utility for flash media?
Thanks.

Urgently need to get data from Touch HD

I have a Touch HD that has a faulty touchscreen which doesn't recognise screen presses.
It's going to go back as faulty and should be replaced however I need to get the contacts off the device before it's sent back.
When I connect the Touch HD to a PC it defaults to internet connection sharing and I can read the sd card as a removable drive.
Is there any way to way to change the default connection method to activesync without using the touchscreen, all other buttons work?
Is there any way of remotely controlling the Touch HD from a pc?
I've arranged for the phone to collected for warranty but realised that I don't have some of the numbers off it so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion but unless I'm mistaken they rely upon connecting the phone to the pc via activesync and unfortunately I can't do this because when you connect the phone it remembers and defaults to the last connection type which was as a modem not as active sync.
If anyone knows a way of reseting this via the pc and sd card or using the other buttons such as volume up, down and power then please let me know.
Even if so ... Under Windows mobile Device Center you can use device without setting up and then use File manager to discover the HDD and SD card.
At least under Win7 I am able ...

Unless I'm missing something doing this allows access to the storage card as a removable drive but nothing else as the phone doesn't go into active sync mode unless you select it on the screen and I can't do that.
Is it possible to write and execute a function to the sd card (perhaps even autorun) that changes the default option on the phone to active sync?
hmm, that's a tough one, but I have an idea.
One thought that came to mind is to install My Mobiler on your PC. That allows you to control the HD via the mouse on the PC. Of course, it requires the active sync connection that you are trying to get to - so it doesn't really help.... EXCEPT that in your case, it might.
Normally, MyMobiler only connects when the phone is using activesync. However, when the phone is set to "share internet connection", My Mobiler attempts to connect to the phone anyway. If the phone is NOT able to connect to the internet (via 3G etc) then My Mobiler is successful in connecting to the phone. If the phone is able to connect to the internet, then My Mobiler does not connect to the phone.
So, try this.
Turn the phone off and take out the SIM card (that way the phone will not be able to connect to the internet).
Turn the phone on and wait until it is all booted up.
Plug it into the PC via USB.
In your case, it will connect as "share internet".
On your PC, open My Mobiler and wait for it to connect to the phone (it might install it on your phone for the first time too). Once you see your phone's screen on the My Mobiler window, you can control the phone via your mouse.
On the phone (via mouse), go to:
Start > settings (if on HTC Sense, then Settings tab > Menu > all settings)
Now go to connections > usb to pc
This might all vary depending on the ROM you are using, but the general idea should be correct.
There you can change the settings for how the phone connects when plugged in via usb. You can set it to always connect via active sync. Then, the next time you plug in your phone, active sync should start and you should be able to backup your contacts as usual or delete them off the phone etc.
I tested the steps and it worked. I hope it works for you. Let me know.
EDIT:
If My Mobiler still will not connect, you can change the settings of My Mobiler so that it will connect with the phone via IP instead of active sync.
To do so, in My Mobiler, go to "File > open settings" and scroll almost to the bottom of that text file to find where you would need to change the settings.

Plug in hd2 it charges but wont read sd

I plug in my phone to my computer and ut charges but it wont connect to computer through DISK DRIVE WTF... I RESET IT TWICE AND NOTHING... ITS NOT CORD OR PHONE CUZ IT CHARGES...
when you plug it in to your PC in a mass storage mode the memory card is locked
the phone acts as a thumbdrive so you can drag and drop files onto your sd card.
theres a prompt that AKSs?(asks) you what mode would you like to connect.
either sync or mass storage.
every phone does it same btw.
Two possibilities-
1. Your card may have gotten corrupted. It's a fairly common occurrence and it will cause your phone to not be able to read it. Plug it into the PC via a card reader & see if you can see any files on it. If it takes an unusually long time for your comp to see it, or if all you see are wierd files with numbers as names, then its corrupted. Even if it loads fine, it wouldn't hurt to reformat it anyway just for the sake of maintenance. I suggest formatting it as fat32 with 64k allocation unit size for the best read speed.
2. Your settings on the phone are incorrect. Go to settings>system>connections>USB to PC and make sure the disk drive option is enabled, and that the "ask me first about USB connection type" option is checked.
If neither of those fixes it, back up your data & try a hard reset. If that STILL doesn't fix it, then your card is dead.

Cant connect "disk drive" style to PC???

I have not had any luck locating other people with this issue.
First off let it be noted my note 3 will be replaced tomorrow by a new note 3 (severe signal issues hampering the ability to make or receive any phone calls)
That being said, I was trying to back up some app data and long story short - I'm trying to connect my phone to the pc but the PC refuses to acknowledge it.
When the phone is plugged into the pc (usb 2 - any port) it simply charges the phone and calls it a day. No popups - no notifications - no verizon bloat spam.
I've tried installing samsung drivers via download, I've tried their Kies software. I'm getting nowhere.
Also - an odd thing - I was trying to get Helium (carbon) to work and it had me enable USB Debugging (pretty standard procedure) - When it asked to do that it auto popped up the setting page which was labeled something like "developer settings" (helium actually opened up the setting page for me) and I did - Prior to that and since that point I cannot find that settings page anywhere on the phone, as thats the page I was looking for the "disk mount" option that I'm used to seeing on my tbolt. Helium wont bring it up again either as usb debugging is enabled now.
what in the heck is going on with my gn3???
You can get the Developer Options screen in the settings by going to About Phone and tapping on the Build Number line repeatedly until it says "You are now a developer."
As far as mounting as a disk, that functionality is long gone since the Thunderbolt. There may be a yet unfound way to mount just the external sd card as a drive, but the internal memory is formatted with ext3 or ext4 and windows wouldnt touch it if it could.
Im not sure of your computer setup, but if you are using an OS before Windows 7 you may need to install the MTP porting kit from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=19153). All newer Android phones now use the highly inefficient, annoying MTP protocol to do file transfers through USB.

Just learning about this myself because just changed from note 2 to note 3 and had no problem on note 2. Seems like wifi transfer is a fairly easy way to go. Download something like WiFi File Transfer then you can search hidden folders and such and transfer files. Not as easy as mounting the drive though. Would like to know about other options.

Shield won't connect to network storage, won't auto mount or manually connect

I have an Archer C7 wireless router with a USB hard drive connected to it that contains all my media. I have two linux boxes and two Windows machines that can see the share (\\192.168.xxx.xxx\volume1), but the nVidia Shield TV won't see it automatically OR let me enter the address manually. KODI and SPMC both surf to and find the share and media folders therein without problem, but the Shield will not natively see it.
When I try to enter it manually, it says "CONNECTION FAILED - null is not available". I don't know what it says by null except that it can't tell anything is there at all.
The only thing I can think of is that, in Linux, I have to use "sec=ntlm" to change the dedault security in the cifs/samba command in file /etc/fstab to get it to mount, but I can't set something like that in the Shield. Even if I remove authentication altogether, the Shield still doesn't recognize the share or even the 192.168.xxx.xxx address at all. They're on the same network. I should also mention that I can connect to the share from my Android phone, so I don't think it's something with the OS. Maybe...
At this point, I'm at a total loss to get this share connected to the SHIELD.
Any ideas?

No solution yet. I let the Tier 2 techs at Nvidia know about it, but nothing back (as I expected). All we can do is hope this and many other issues are addressed on the next update.
Try with NFS. My share is NFS and auto connects correctly every time on bootup.
