So I made the mistake of trying to replace the charging port on my S5 myself, and when I put everything back together, the screen is unresponsive. Shoulda just stuck with backup batteries.
Anyway, now I'm debating paying $150 to fix the screen or biting the bullet and getting an S7 on eBay for ~$350. Since I'm really only looking for stock/debloated, which I can get on the S7, I feel like I'm only losing removable batteries (which sucks), but getting a better... everything else.
Looking for opinions/suggestions.
Thanks!
Ultimately it's your personal preference, but for what it's worth I've changed a few screens on androids before (HTC, Samsung, & Moto) and it's tedious as hell, but it's not all that difficult. I don't have a very steady hand so it's a little aggravating to work with all the small pieces. Look up a guide on youtube and see if it's something you'd like to attempt.
I just bought refurbished s5 for 150 on amazon . LooKs new. Ide go that route.

Am i making the right decision?! Haha i'm just kidding I had the Note 2 and while i loved it i only used the s-pen a few number of times and never used all the features and to be honest and the phone was a little too big for me. I always thought that 5" was the perfect size for a phone and after playing with the phone today at the AT&T store i realized the LG has almost the same specs as the N3 and is 5.2" and it feels really really nice in the hands. I still think the best feeling phone that i've owned is the HTC DNA, but the G2 is a close 2nd. Another plus side is the G2 is actually cheaper for me (AT&T Next plan) and i'm not really feeling the faux leather backing on the N3. Did any of you guys go from the N3 to the G2?

I was going to purchase the Note 3 when it came out, but picked up the G2 today instead. I don't use any of the software upgrades that samsung provides, because I always use custom ROMs. I also wasn't planning on using the stylus ever. The G2's screen is a little smaller, but it's also an IPS screen (which is WAY better).
The only things I don't like is that battery is nonremovable and there's no SD card slot. That being said, I got it for $139 brand new. You just can't beat that.

i actually like phones that have non-removable batteries! One thing that drove me nuts was that flimsy battery cover on the note 2
I was thinking of getting this over the Note 3 that I Pre-ordered. Think I might buy it off contract tomorrow so I can test it for 2 weeks before the note 3. ATT only charges 36 dollar return fee if you don't like it.
If you have a costco account you can buy it from their and you will have a 90 day window to return it.
Does anyone with the white phone, have any problems keeping it clean, does the frosted glass make it hard to clean. Has anyone used this phone with oil or something on there hands like working on a car?
About to pull the trigger on one but cant decide on the black or white?
I have the white one and no issues. I did put a rear-protector on it day 1, but the sides are pearl-white as ever.
OK good deal, I just ordered mine! $500 US after I get my 10% ebay rebate
Nice. I really like the build quality of this phone. quite unassuming. finally a phone < 5", near stock android with a really good camera. I wish Sony well with this, sadly, I think very few will buy it.
Yes it looks really nice, I used to have a bunch of HTC's then Got a Galaxy s4 and never really liked the build quality, Ive been bouncing around phones for the past couple months as I kept losing them in the river. then I picked up a 5 and S6 Actives lost one of those and sold the s5 had a amazon fire phone i loaded cynagen, Really liked the form factor and it really is a pretty decent phone build wise and compact but the specs really kind of suck, especially the camera! So Cant wait to get this new one.

Is there anything eke I'm not thinking of that I'm gonna lose coming to the S7? Any issues I should check buying on eBay? (Like if it's already on Nougat, problems rooting). And... are you liking the upgrade?
Looking for opinions/suggestions.
Thanks!

I upgraded from the S5, the one that was able to have the bootloader unlocked through that exploit found about a year ago.
I have the edge version since the battery life was much bigger. I think the stock S5 battery was 2800mah and the S7's is 3000mah while the S7 edge is 3600mah. That was my biggest decision maker right there.
I miss the ability of using a good tempered glass screen protector (since I have the edge) and the IR blaster but other than that this phone is worth the upgrade.
I had root and Xposed but now I'm running 100% stock. Took me a while to get used to but root in my opinion wasn't worth it for the lag and loss of battery life.
It's nice to have wireless charging built right in instead of a new back cover or chip you had to place inside of the phone. I actually bought a 3D printer just to make a case that would fit with the wireless charging cover and now it just collects dust.
Just out of curiosity, how is the screen unresponsive? Does it turn on at all? Or does the touchscreen just not work?
Hey @Outbreak444 - thanks for responding.
Yeah, I was thinking about the Edge for that very reason. Battery life isn't really an issue on a day to day basis, but on trips, it's huge for me.
I went to the Super Bowl a few years back, and people were cramming around any outlet they could find to get their phones juiced - we ended up not seeing some friends for hours after the game because their phones were dead. I've been at all day tailgating for night time college games and watched the same thing. And golf trips - using GPS on the phone, and then wanting to go out boozing after a round? Nightmare for some guys - I pop in a new battery and I'm good to go. So I'm having a hard time convincing myself to drop that feature alone.
I've done some Xposed stuff in the past, but I'm at the point now of just wanting debloated stock, which I've had with little to no lag, and pretty decent battery life (which again, isn't too big an issue with extra batteries.)
Oh, and the screen does come on and looks fine, but all I can see is my lockscreen - can't even type in my security pin. Completely unresponsive to touch. If you've ever opened one or seen a video of someone doing it, I know I knicked the ribbon in the top right corner that connects the screen to the motherboard - like seriously, a couple mm tear = screen dead. I guess Samsung really didn't want me in there - it's like 1mm from the edge of the screen - way too easy to hit.
I'm also wondering why the price on the S7s have dropped this fast - even with the S8 coming soon, I thought they'd still be upwards of $450-$500. Low demand from the Note debacle?
So I'm still wondering, other than a better camera and better internals, what features would entice me to step-up. I kinda feel like phones have gotten to the point of computers - as long as you've got a fast internet speed, incremental processing power in the device is getting less and less important.
My son wanted an Iphone due to peer pressure at school so I finally caved since his was due for an upgrade. I wanted to keep his phone as a backup and replace my old Note 3 as a wifi gaming device. I didn't realize he had busted the screen and now I can't use the insurance option to get it fixed. Any options out there for getting the glass repaired?
Your son had an S7 and downgraded to an iPhone? Damn shame.
How broken is the screen. It seems like every single phone I see on eBay has a broken screen so someone might buy it. If you're only using it as a WiFi gaming device you can buy a good condition phone on eBay with a bad ESN.

IKR all these kids think Iphone is the bomb. I had an Iphone 7+ and it drove me nuts. I returned it and got the Google Pixel XL. I wanted the Note 7 but the whole battery thing ruined that. Now I am stuck in a contract because I did a trade in. Maybe the Note 9 will be out by the time I can upgrade again.
I ordered a glass screen protector for the S7 edge in the hopes that it will stick and not break anymore. I was hoping to keep it as a backup phone and yes use it as a gaming device to replace my old Note 3. I think with a glass protector it might be okay.
Well, i tried to replace the battery of this device because i was getting around 3 hours of SOT. Got a battery.
All fine, opened up the backcover, removed some scrws. Some of they were very tight and then got to the last one. Bottom right, near the battery connector.
Not sure if it was on purpose or not, but my T3 torx screwdriver couldnt budge it. The screw is destroyed now and i have no way to remove the backcover to replace the battery.
For a flagship, they used screws that can be deformed by a nailcutter. This is absolutely disgusting.
There is no way to remove the backcover without destroying it in the process.
Now i only wonder why they made the cover with 20+ screws. Was this on purpose to over any would be fixer?
Another laptop i owned from lenovo had a stuck screw for the cpu. So there was no way to put thermal cooling paste for it.
The screw in the lenovo laptop was also destroyed in the process.
On the otherhand, my samsung laptop is still going and its from 2011.
Let this be a warning. If they had used plastic for the screws, it would have been better because at least i wouldnt need mote expensive machinery to drill them.
Unfortunately, Motorola decided to use t4 (even t2) screws in some models, which might have been your case. I used a magnifying glass to make sure the screw driver fit perfectly before turning so it didn't strip them. Took about 2 hours with heavy patience and rewatching multiple YouTube how-to's from different view points. I actually broke the black plastic that covers the Qi charging coil but thankfully that isn't a crucial part.
I bend the frame and just the replaced the battery. Luckily nothing got damaged.
Gotta test now the new battery. If it works out, at least it will spare me 400+ euros for a new phone.
But seriously, the screws are ****. I removed some of them.
I am exceptinally lucky only one got stuck in the roght place so that i could bend the frame and replace it.
Advice foreveryone, becareful for the ribbon cables. Yhey are flimsy and can be damaged extremely easily.
This phone is worth the repair and time because there isnt much out there that really competes with its screensize and performance, and hope the battery repair can help this thing last a while longer. Maybe 1-2 years
Except for flagships, every midranger i have seen is inferior and you wont get a decent 6 inch phone for under $500.-
that's why I took it to the local shop to have a pro do the job, plenty of people have reported breaking things then putting it back together and the phone wont boot or stuff doesn't work
it looks easy on the video tutorials until you **** up [emoji4]

@shadowcore; you are getting 3 hours of SOT and you decided to change the battery????. Your battery was still in decent condition, you should have waited until the battery would die randomly.

Well, i bought the battery off of amazon and its not available to buy anymore.
And the phone was dying at 15%>
Now with the replaced battery, i am getting 5-6 hours of SOT.
Its basically a new phone.
Does anyone know the dimensions thread of the screw? I'd buy some with a different head. My chinese screwdriver is very bad and unusable and screw too.
Maybe M1.4 x 3mm?
Thanks.
I am sure 99% that the screws are M1.4 x 2mm.
I ordered this, hope it will be OK.

Just my opinion but I felt it was worthwhile to pay $75 for a "professional" to swap mine out. They did not make the battery easy to replace, used crap screws, etc. The vast majority of folks would be better off going this route if its avail.

m8 the battery is like 13-18 bucks with tools, you just need to follow typical precautions. If I had 75 bucks I would've sold it long ago and bought a used first gen pixel or essential phone

I know that I could have replaced the battery for a $20 bill. Could have. Could have also screwed it up. Very easily screwed it up. I'm not sure where you could buy a first gen pixel for $75 or less. If you can do that, I'd say you ought to do whatever you can to scrape up the money. As far as the Essential, that's for the birds ain't it?
EDIT: Yeah, the Essential was definitely for the birds. It's sales have been so slow and sluggish that the next model has been cancelled. Whether at the $699 original price or even with the 200 or so discount that eventually came about, I get the impression it was overpriced. In my case, a Nexus 6 with fresh battery for $75 >>>>> New Essential at $500+. I still don't believe in $75 Pixels either and would love to be proven wrong. I am right or someone is withholding a massive bargain from XDA folks.
