My Epic broke a few weeks ago and was denied warranty service, so I suspended my phone service and I will replace my broken screen myself with one from another unit. Assuming Samsung wiped my device during their diagnostics test and my phone would require activation upon boot, will I be able to use my phone without cellular data/voice until I decide to resume my service?
I've read up that the G1s and Droids can be used unactivated by touching the screen corners and I have a link that says the Fascinate can be used with a dialer code (http://androidforums.com/fascinate-tips-tricks/171348-bypass-fascinate-activation-screen.html)
Would any of those work?

Assuming I'm understanding your question right, the answer should be yes. Sprint sent me a replacement phone when mine was just SUCKING BATTERY. I "switched" the activation from one phone to the other a call to Sprint. When the service was switched, I turned the old phone back on, and it worked on wifi only (no cell or data connection). I'm assuming that signing back in to the market via my Gmail account would have worked fine, but I can't tell for absolutely certain as I didn't actually try it. SHOULD work though. If someone has a more concrete answer, that'd be great.
Why not pay the $35 at a sprint store for repair? We have to do these and evo's often.
And on topic yes market and email etc work on wifi without being activated.

You should be able to. I was using my hero as an mp3 player for a little while after I got my epic. The only problem I ran into was I couldn't sign into the android market on my hero if I was using the same gmail address on my epic

Sprint fixed my strewn for free. They actually gabe me a new phone at the store since they didn't have the parts. I called and made an appointment but they don't know what happened to my part

I don't have TEP so the Sprint store wanted nothing to do with me.
I bought a replacement shell with screen on ebay for $35 so I will repair it myself. Samsung wanted $150 to repair it and every single Samsung rep I've talked to on the phone said that their warranty never covers a broken screen under any circumstances.
Hopefully I can make sure I have a working phone before I go off to bootcamp
Thanks for the input guys

Since you already bought the screen, this isn't really necessary, but I work at Sprint and with TEP it is a free repair. Without it is $35. I promise! In another thread someone argued that this was not true, but it surely is. I'd be happy to take a pic of an eticket for someone without tep and it clearly shows the $35 charge populated for cracked/damaged screen.
I should mention I didn't purchase any insurance on the phone at all ($71.76 a month after all fees and taxes)
The manager at the Sprint store I went to, which also happens to be the only store in the area authorized for repairs, said that TEP would have been $35 out of pocket, and regular insurance would be $100. Once I said I had no insurance he pointed to a phone and said it was Samsung's problem

If they are corporate or preferred then they are seriously misinformed. The insurance is only for lost/stolen, liquid, or device is in 3 or more pieces. All housing/screen other than that is covered for free if you have TEP or ESRP, but if you only have ERP or NOTHING, then its $35 charge with the option to add tep after the repair or replacement.
I'd complain if they are a corporate or preferred store. If that's the case they are basically saying that they didn't feel like dealing with you, or they have not been properly trained on the new policies.
tibwolf I'm in the same situation as you ... can you tell me how it went? How difficult was it to actually replace it? I couldn't find instructions on the web.
I had my Epic for over two weeks before I activated it and it worked fine as everything but a phone. There were no tricks involved at all - I even did the Google setup so I could access the market, Gmail, etc.
I got mine @ the Bestbuy mobile store. The rep there said that Android based phones have to be actived to be used and that was the reason I couldn't play with a real one before purchasing. He would let me play with a Blackberry though.

For him to say "android" based phones have to be activated is false. i had my htc hero without being activated and performed a factory reset and i just walked through the setup with wifi and I could do everything on the phone except the phone. When i bought my epic 4g, It was not activated yet I turned it on and messed around with it.
I hope this helps you out!
p.s - i dunno if this matters but both phones had been previously activated but were unactivated through sprint.
Sincerely,
D3luSi0n4L
I can confirm that you can sprint does repair cracked screens for $35 ( I also smashed mine with no (none of any kind) insurance. You can also use your phone through wifi by skipping activation.
You can bring it to sprint even if you have no account with them?

^This. There was a recent policy change and this is now the policy. If it is repairable, the repair is free with insurance or $35 without. If it is non-repairable, water damaged, or stolen, then you can get a replacement under insurance and nothing without insurance.

I had a Best Buy guy tell me the same thing and I had to correct him. Best Buy in my area doesnt know much about the phones they sell. I had my Epic for awhile and never had it activated, but I could use it on wifi for everything other than calls. I finally decided to acitvate it and switched back and forth for some time, flipping between my Evo and Epic. Both worked over Wifi, and still functioned without wifi, when not activated on Sprint. Same with my old Hero.

Does this include parts? Also what kind of things can they replace? The bezel around my screen on the sides has hairline scratches that kinda bug me, I wouldn't mind paying $35 it they'd completely replace it. Please let me know asap!
Thanks!

What the f*** Tmobile? I just asked for a warranty replacement for my Samsung Vibrant (dead usb) port, and while it is second hand, the IMEI is on my account but Tmobile says it is not under warranty! They need a proof of purchase to verify the warranty!
yup. phone warranty isn't transferable. try contacting samsung.
So I have this second hand also but I buy the $6 insurance that doesn't work?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
But did TMobile change their policy? My previous second hand phones had no problems with warranty.
if you do not have insurance on the phone, than yes to use the warranty it has to be the phone that was purchased. Second hand phones will not be covered.
HOWEVER if you do have insurance, as long as it is a registered T-Mobile device (IE it says "T-Mobile" on it) than they WILL replace it. If the store that you go to gives you trouble with it, call T-Mobiles customer service number, and they will either tell the rep that it is okay to do it, OR ship you out a new phone, and you will have to mail your old one in. ( if you dont mail it in within a time frame, you will be charged full retail for the phone that was mailed to you )
If you call assurion which is the insurance company that does the claims they will help u I had the same priblem they helped me dont go thru t mobile they will give u a song n dance

Basically this.
Its the most detailed one here and explains all options.
I have gone through t mobile and have had no issues with warranty exchange as long as you have the insurance before you get the second hand phone!!! It may also depend on what state you are in??????

Hello everyone,
I have a Note 3 n900w8 locked to Roger (Canadian provider), I also have protection plan that cost 8$/month. I am looking to take advantage from this protection plan. Today I called roger to file a report for lost phone, I was told by the representative that my phone will be blacklisted and they will ship me another device that cost 120$ plus 13% tax, so I decided to cancel the file report until I get more information of this process. so here is my concerns!
1-I remember someone told me to unlock the phone before I call to file a lost/stolen phone, any idea why?
2-If I take out the sim card from the device before I call to file a report for lost/stolen phone, will they be able to blacklist the phone??
All I am trying to do is get a replacement note 3 for 135$ and sell the phone I have for 450-500$.
Thanks in advance

1) - NO clue never heard of this
2) Yup - IMEI will be blacklisted/
3) Impossible feat. - Once you report it stolen/lost, it gets banned from networks via the IMEI number and added to a stolen/lost phone Database.
Lastly, It's fraud man.. Not an advisable idea really.

Hi everyone,
So I have read a ton of conflicting information on insurance for the Nexus 6p ( only looking at Square Trade and Asurion not Nexus Protect)
So here are my questions if anyone that has actually made a claim with Asurion or Square Trade (most interested in Square trade at this point) please let me know, thanks!!
1- If a claim is made with Square trade and the phone is not repairable, do they have Nexus 6p's as replacements? Or is it going to be like Asurion where they will send you a "like" device?
2- If the phone is repairable through Square trade, do they support repairs for this device? Or will they just send me a monetary value?
3- Is it confirmed that Asurion will in fact drop your insurance (Verizon) if you activate the Nexus 6p on your line? (I have not activated it on Verizon yet, using google fi right now, I know they have a protection plan but I will be using this plan only when I run out of minutes on Verizon line, grandfathered in so not going to be able to use google fi insurance either)
I have Asurion on my line, I want to purchase Square Trade for my Nexus 6P since Asurion will not replace it if necessary but I want to make sure that Square Trade will fix my device if I need it to be fixed or replace with a Nexus 6P. Thanks everyone!!
(Nexus Protect is not an option for me, I purchased on Swappa but since I have Asurion I can submit for Square Trade)
The one time I ever had to use my SquareTrade warranties they actually gifted me the money to buy a new item. This was not for a phone so that may be different.
I have had both and have filed. Claims through both. For both my Nexus 5 and my Nexus 6 I was either able to send the phone in for repair or fix locally and send in the reciept for a full refund of the price of the repairs. In the case of the Nexus 6 screen I had to send it in due to the screen being so new that my local repair shop couldn't get a screen in stock. (Ran over by several cars). Square trade ended up sending me another phone as mine wasn't repairable. My Nexus 5 was also sent to Square trade and was sent back a new phone as the board where the charging port connected to was damaged along with a bad screen. Both times phones had custom RoMs on them and yet they were totally painless experiences and I would highly recommend them. I went with Nexus protect on my 6P and I am hoping I didn't make a mistake doing so. I can't answer the Asurion question as the times I have had Asurion, I was insuring phones purchased through my provider.

It should be noted that both phones were refurbished units however all the phones you get from Asurion will also be refurbished units so if this is a issue then you might want to research other options. I personally have only had one issue out of 8 refurbished phones so I'm not one to complain like many users.

I actually work for Verizon and I can confirm that Asurion sends refurbished devices. It's a fairly simple process. However, Verizon's policy towards non-Verizon devices is that the insurance would not cover it. The device has to be purchased from Verizon or an authorized retailer. One other thing is that when you switch over the device (usually by switching the sim card from another device) the insurance would stay on your line and you would continue to be billed for it (Seriously -_-). So you would have to take it off of your line either by calling, stopping into a store, or by going into your My Verizon account and managing the features on your line.
One other thing to note is that once you remove the insurance from your line, you cannot add it back unless it's an open enrollment period and you meet the requirements or you purchase a new device on that line.

Hmm.
I have bought devices from third parties and they were covered for warranty and theft.
I've filed both types of claims on devices that I ddid not buy from Verizon.
Could be that since they were Verizon branded, it didn't matter.

That should work. I don't want to guarantee anything as far as the Note 5 but as long as that device is the active device on your line at the time of the claim. Asurion's website might not let you make a claim if you just switch over the device (I've never tried it so I couldn't tell you) so you might just have to call insead.
Glad I could help!

Like you said, those devices would have been Verizon branded. In this case the Nexus 6p isn't Verizon branded. It's technically not even certified to work with Verizon's network by Verizon...

With Asurion it seems like it's hit or miss with whether or not it's a new phone or a refurb. I've seen both ways. It also depends on how new to the market the phone you're claiming is. For example, my mom dropped her brand new iPhone 6S in the toilet the day after she got it (*facepalm* -_-, it's actually quite a funny story tbh) and Asurion sent a brand new phone still in the original packaging because at this point the 6S had only been out for a month or something like that when she got it so Asurion hadn't had any refubs to send out.

The only way that I know how to do this is if you have asurion on your line already.
Some say they will drop you, some say they won't so I don't know for sure as I have not gone ahead with the Square Trade warranty yet, (waiting to see if I can find a coupon code or a sale).
What I did since I have coverage on my line was requested a letter from Asurion stating that I am covered for my line (asurion covers the line so whatever device you have on there is what is covered at the time, that's what they told me). My plan is when I am ready to use Squaretrade to submit my coverage letter to them and let them know what my phone has current coverage. I have put my sim in the Nexus 6P and I switch between phones. As per one of the last comments, I would have to call Asurion to cancel my coverage, (which I don't want to do because I want to keep it for my other phone on my line.). When I looked at my plan, I saw that coverage was till there however, I mainly use my note 5 so that is the phone that is more often on the line. So now I just have to work on the Square Trade side of this so I can get coverage for my Nexus 6P as Asurion does not cover this device. I did speak with Squretrade about this and they said that a letter showing proof of insurance from your insurance company is valid which is what I got from Asurion.
Hope this helps.

I’m not sure if this applies to me then. I’m on T-Mobile and don’t purchase insurance. I did purchase Square trade for my note 4 but it was new from T-Mobile. I emailed them just in case but not sure if they cover used devices. Anyone know if they cover new devices sold on Swappa? Would I just send the PayPal Invoice? From the contract from my note 4 I got this extract so wondering if they do covered used devices. Hopefully I wouldn’t have to wait and use the manufacturer warranty before I could use SquareTrade.
Excerpt: HOW LONG OUR COVERAGE LASTS:
• If your item is NEW, this Protection Plan begins on the day you purchased the item, and lasts for the number of years you chose at purchase time.
• If your item is USED/REFURBISHED, this Protection Plan begins on the 31st day after your item purchase or after your manufacturer's warranty expires, whichever is longer. The agreement also lasts for the number of years you chose at purchase time.

You can normally get them from someone that has Squaretrade.
So I went with the optional $5/month Project Fi "Device Protection" when I bought my 128GB Pixel XL.
Then I dropped the phone and broke the back glass, which is apparently impossible to replace because the glass isn't available anywhere unless you want to pay someone like $150 to replace it for you. It's not a DIY option, you can't buy the glass.
So I decided to use my Device Protection which has a $100+ deductible.
But the thing is, they will ONLY replace your phone if they can first place a hold on your credit card for the full price of the phone.
You cannot simply send them the phone, then wait for them to send you a replacement back.
They ONLY do the advance replacement where they send you a phone and THEN you send them your old phone.
Not everyone has $900 freaking dollars available in credit or in their bank to allow for that hold to be placed.
WTF kind of stupid policy is this.
Sorry to vent but I feel this is something folks should know about before buying from Project Fi instead of through Google themselves, where my replacement would have gone though a different company with more relaxed replacement policies.
Ugh.
Googles logistics are terrible. Thats why they will never be a feasible replacement for brick and mortar carrier stores if they don't make some changes.
If they send a phone before you send one back, most companies put a credit hold on it. I have had that policy applied many times most recently when my wife had a replacement done on a Motorola/Lenovo product. It sucks, but it is standard procedure.

That's not the problem, Man.
The problem is that is their ONLY available method.
They refuse to let you ship them the phone and then send you a replacement AFTER they receive delivery of your phone.
So, it's either have $900 burning a hole in your pocket (CC or bank account) or you don't get to warranty your phone.
The $900 CC thing can't be that big a deal, I put very little on my cards and they give me large limits. The warranty company will remove the charges pretty quick (in my experience) so just make sure you don't do this the last week of your billing period and it's all good. Most people want a new phone pretty quick so it doesn't surprise me that this is their only option. I think with my wife's Moto we were given 2 options, the pay and swap and the send it to us and when we get around to it (4-6 weeks) we will repair it and send it back. So we really only had one option because waiting wasn't a viable option. Most places I have dealt with won't do the you send us one and we will send one back because it makes them liable for the phone so that's why they do the pay and swap.

Through Project Fi or Google Store?
Normal warranty or Device Protection plan?
Through store and normal warranty..
Edit: device is over heating..
Attached is the email..
They don't take the money, they just make sure you have it available in case you run off with the device. Even if it's at the end of your billing cycle. It remains pending and never hits your balance. Don't Make this a bigger deal than it is. Just get the new device, send back the old one and forget it. Personally I'd much rather do it that way than waiting while I have no phone.

yeah I bought the insurance/coverage through the store. ours was a one-time payment where his is a recurring charge.
I've claimed insurance through AT&T ('09 - Asurion), Sprint and Tmo (2010 - Asurion), VZW (2012 - Asurion) and none of them placed a hold on my credit card. I was a college student at the time and could barely afford the deductible. That's a terrible policy from Project Fi
In the exact same situation, i was with project fi at the time, but since i wanted to finance it (and keep insurnace on it if i switched) i bought it from the google store with protection. A little time goes by and (besides all the small problems my device has) i ended up putting a single crack in the back glass much like yours.
I called, and again same as you, they told me if i wanted to replace the device they would need to place a hold of 799 on a card. I barely ever keep money on my card, so this was unreasonable. they repeatedly told me that this was the only way the warranty exchange could work.
A few days later and an idea popped into my head "can they place a hold on the same card/account that i financed my phone with?". so i called and asked, only to find out there was indeed an alternative way to do the exchange, which was sending mine first then receiving the new one.
See, I'm in the exact opposite situation. I purchased my device through Verizon and I'm having some hardware issues, so I need a replacement. If I get the replacement from Verizon, they will ship the phone first and put a hold on the account until I send one back, but I might get a phone with 7.1.1+ on it therefore not being able to unlock it. So I went to Google, they will fix/replace the phone under warranty and get me an unlockable device. However, they will not send me a new phone until my phone has been received by them (I don't want to go a week without my phone, I own no other Verizon devices). They said that since I don't have an account for them to put a hold on, they cannot do the advance replacement. I offered to set up an account and give my credit card to place the hold on and they told me that they cannot create an account. It only gets created when you purchase the device.

No dude, it doesn't go through unless you have the $900 balance already available.
So if your credit card doesn't have $900 available credit, or your bank account doesn't have $900 available cash, then the "pend" doesn't go through and you're SOL.
Don't make it a bigger deal than it is?!?
Whatever.

Not to mention after the fact those funds aren't accessible until they clear.

That's my assumption but I wasn't sure so I didn't include that factoid.
I wish I could say I have $900 on all my cards but with a huge mortgage, car payment and other stuff going on.... well, you know.

Whether you have it or not it doesn't really change the absurdity of that being the option they offer when you are already paying for insurance and a deductible.
