Hey,
So, I got my Kindle Fire yesterday. I live in Mauritius and bought it via freight forwarding service, took like 13 days to get here. Here's everything I did until now:
Rooted
Installed tun and cifs modules
Used cifsmanager to get windows shares on my fire
Installed and used openvpn to connect to hidemyass pro
Installed 2x RDP client
Installed Terminal emulator
Synced Picasa web with kindle gallery
Install Moboplayer
Setup Android Market
So, I hear there's an update coming along- 6.2.1 says them. I hope it doesn't screw up anything! I will try to block amazon.com on my router to prevent the update.
So far, everything worked out pretty good.
###UPDATE0
I tried to install TWRP 2.0 and FIREFIREFIRE with kindle utility v3 and turns out I bricked my device already-stuck at boot splash screen! Will try to work it out.
###UPDATE1
Fixed the brick-like problem and installed CM7. I don't really like CM7 though, makes the kindle look and feel too much like a mobile phone, so, switched back to stock. Will wait for ICS to be stable but I hope the kindle doesn't update to 6.2.1 now.
u better read this quickly!!!

to sty away from the 6.2.1 update, it breaks root and one click doesnt work anymore for now

With 'boot splash screen', do you mean the yellow triangle?

Yea but I fixed it already
I got stuck at the boot screen with just KindleFire (non flashing). I can't install the driver again for adb to work. What can I do to install the driver successfully? Currently it is recognized as Unknown device. Thanks.

What did you do just before that happens? And, are you Mac or PC?
So I have a nexus 7, and I recently rooted my device using wugfresh's toolkit (Thanx btw)
I then downloaded the sixaxis compatibility checker, clicked start, and what not, plugged in my usb device, blah blah. I didnt use a pair tool, i just used an otg cable and used the ps3 controller via usb on the nexus. anyway, in the end, everything worked fine.
Because it was rooted, and everything was wiped clean, i kept gettin a notification to install a new update from google play or whatever. couldnt remember. anyway i installed it eventually...
and now, sixaxis doesnt work!
i re-installed both the compatibility checker and the actual app, but it doesnt work. When i click start, all it says is:
Attempting connection type 1...
Driver Starting...
and stays like that til i press stop. if i press start again, it comes up with the same thing, and theres no bluetooth address at the bottom. Before there was, now there isnt.
Could this be because of the update i installed? If so, could i just unroot, and then re-root my device, NOT install that update, and then try the sixaxis checker and app again??
Or if that wasnt the problem, what could be the problem?
Any ideas, would be awesome.
thanx in advance
May need to restart SuperSU to give the controller app rights

I just rooted my new kindle that I just got today using the bin4ry method and I have the superuser app. Cool, but I have no clue where to go from here. No idea what a custom rom is or why I would even need one or any of that stuff.
Is there a starter package or some sort for first time kindle users?
The system version is 7.4.6

What I did for my mom's KFHD was root it, disable the OTA, and install APEX launcher.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/05/01/custom-roms-for-android-explained-and-why-you-want-them/ This explains custom ROMs.
Personally, I didn't install a second recovery or a custom ROM on my mom's KFHD because 1) It's not mine 2) I don't have a factory cable 3) She doesn't live with me so I won't get much troubleshooting time if something goes wrong.
She really hated the carousel feature of the stock kindle.
I used Kindle Fire First Aide, found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096888 ----- ((actually I used an older version from before June))

Got another question. I'm currently reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909 and I got to the point where I'm using fireflash. I see the red lettered warning. Do I put a checkmark in the "flash kfhd7-u-boot-prod-7.2.3.bin"? and the "apply stack override" boxes?
Yes u must check that flash 7.2.3 or you will get a red screen brick and need a fastboot cable to fix.

Bad news.
I used fireflash (checked both boxes before installing the flash), but now my kindle always boots into the twrp menu and it won't let me install zip files. I keep getting a assert failed message. Is this something I can fix on my own, or do I need a special cable to fix it or is it screwed? I can get into fastboot (assuming it's the black screen with the fastboot text in the middle)

I don't know enough to answer your questions with me being new to this also; however, being able to still get to fastboot is good and that you can use KFFA to put an older version 7.2.3 back onto you KFHD and then retry.

Do you have verification enabled?, try to turn it off before flashing, by the way check the Mr5 of the file you downloaded....maybe it got corrupted.

Would that be safe since the version I'm using is 7.4.6 and it's an HD 7"?

Yes, 7.2.3 is safe to use. If you are unsure, update to 7.2.3 and wait a while and Amazon will update your KFHD to 7.4.6, and then retry. I also believe I read somewhere on the forum that 7.2.3 is better to use.

Alright. I picked option 3 (completely restore KFHD 7.2.3) and it's currently downloading some files.

Seems to be fine again. Currently on the 7.2.3 system version. Apart from having 1% battery life now and no icons on the homescreen, it went pretty smoothly. Should I wait until it charges up some more before attempting to re-root it or is it fine being plugged in the pc?

1) Definitely let it charge first.
2) The partition images you used to restore your device should already be rooted.

Yes, SuperSU is superuser. If you don't want to lose being root and keep 7.2.3 for upgrading, turn over the air updates after your battery is charged back up.

You shouldn't have any problems. If you follow the instructions closely from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
So I have a problem that I will try explain as best as possible. I have a first gen nexus 7 that I successfully rooted a while back. I decided that I didnt want it rooted and tried to unroot it. Now when I turn the device on, the Cyanogenmod loop still comes up and when it gets to android, the play icon is gone,a nd I have no way to install apps. I downloaded the nexus 7 toolkit to try completely unroot it, but the app doesnt seem to see my device. I booted into recovery mode, but still isnt recognized. No matter what I choose, whether it be Start, restart bootloader, or recovery mode, the device will just restart and hang on the Google logo.
Any help is appreciated

So it will boot into cm but no plays tore? Flash the right gaps and then you should be fine. As for the other issue you need someone with more wisdom than me.
it boots into CM and the tablet works (mostly) fine... wifi works, all the buttons work, etc.... but the one main thing ive noticed is that play is gone and I have no way to install apps. And as i stated originally when I try to flash it back to stock, the windows app I use says the device isnt in the right mode....

You did flag a custom Android OS, aka Cyanogenmod. Cyanogenmod doesn't contain Google Applications -> you need to flash Google Applications separately if you want to use them ...

Download gapps for the version of cyanogenmod you have: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps
Then flash it in recovery after you have flashed cyanogenmod.

Thanks all for the help.. What I would ideally like to do is flash the device back to stock as though I just bought it. My problem is when I boot into recovery (hit power plus vol up ((or down...cant remember which)), the device still isnt recognizxed by the computer app im using to try flash it.

hi
Yes good news for AFTV gen 1 & also AFTV Stick owners, i was just browsing on AFTVNews & guess what i saw.... Well once you recieve the new update to OS5 you can if you like Root it using Kingroot, & also Rbox is working on with porting TWRP custom recovery to a Fire TV 1 that has been rooted by KingRoot. This could be great news to alot of people at the moment with these devices.
Read more here -
http://www.aftvnews.com/fire-os-5-on-the-amazon-fire-tv-1-and-fire-tv-stick-can-be-rooted/
Yay!
Thx - rbox.
Just rooted my stick, here's how it went for me.
Unblocked update servers in router and updated to 5.0.5.
Used ES Explorer to install Kingroot 4.1 and ran it.
Took about 10 minutes - The screen kept blacking out for me and had to keep tapping the remote to turn it back on (probably my timeout settings somewhere).
Initially Kingroot failed.
It rebooted itself and got stuck in a bootloop so left it for ten minutes before pulling the power.
Luckily it hadn't bricked and went back into 'optimizing apps'.
When it finished Kingroot reappeared and said root was successful
Busybox, Titanium and Root explorer installed and had root access.
Set Firestarter to launch on double click and removed Kodi as single click.
Blocked updates and also froze OTAVerifier, OTAUpdates FireTVLauncher and used XBMC Launcher to set Kodi as a true 'Home'.
I'm waiting for the update to roll out to my Gen1 so I can try with Kingroot 4.8 as I can use mouse/keyboard for that one.
Hopefully rbox can perform some magic and put together a pre-rooted ROM for the stick and maybe recovery which would make full debloating/freezing a lot easier
Free RAM dropping to below 10mb caused a lot of issues with Kodi for me so I replaced the Stick with OSMC on a RaspberryPi2 but if we have a way to recover then we should be able to nuke the Amazon crap running and make use of all that free RAM
This is great news. My fire TV still hasn't got the update though.
KingRoot 4.1 worked
KingRoot also worked for me on my FireTV Stick...
I was trying last night with Kingroot 4.8 the latest, but that did not work... it just sat there...
Thank you Dude360 I just followed exactly what you did..
as a side note after 5.0.5 install I had to toggle developer options every time I try to connect with adbFire
I just bought all the stuff to hardware root , boy am I glad I checked the forums...

Latest Kingroot V4.80 worked fine on FTV1
Latest Kingroot V4.80 worked fine on my first gen Fire TV with 5.0.5 in less than one minute.
No blackouts or reboots.
The trickiest part was to disable USB Debugging to recognize my USB Mouse. :silly:
I plugged my firetv stick in again last night after sitting for a while (hoping for something like this to happen), but it still didn't get 5.0.5 yet. hopefully soon....
and there is a link to 4.1 kingroot on the xda thread for those asking, but as per above I haven't used it yet:

to clarify, my point of 4.1 was for firetv stick users that didn't have a Bluetooth mouse. there are a few posts mentioning that doesn't need it, but nobody posted a link so I thought I'd pass it on. It's the attachment in that thread, but that thread does also link 4.80 which is fine if you have a mouse =)

Not yet.
I was more interested in getting root first, anything after that is a bonus
I might give it a shot if rbox isn't able to put anything together in the form of recovery or a pre-rooted ROM but I don't want to risk losing root on the stick.
I had some issues with Kodi being a launcher with XBMC Launcher though so ended up setting Firestarter as 'Home', removing any single click in the settings and adding Kodi as double click.
Freezing FTVLauncher has a massive impact on free RAM, had over 250mb free in Kodi compared to the usual 30mb!
Moved back to the stick while I wait on my OSMC remote for my Pi2 as the FireStick remote over bluetooth on the Pi seems to eat batteries!
On another note, mate tried to root his tonight and had issues with Kingroot 4.1. Just wasn't playing ball. Would get to 100% and say failed but nothing after that. A reboot just booted as normal and Kingroot still said it had failed.
Hes going to try a factory reset tomorrow see where it gets him.
I might have a couple more coming my way to try this on soon as well but don't have access to a bluetooth mouse to try 4.8 on the stick.

Yes I used Super sume free to replace KingRoot .
After a reboot my firestick is unusable
boots to boot logo, then to black screen. I can connect to it using adbfire but no picture.

I think I will root with this method when the OS5 update turns up? Block updates & then wait for a guide to get rid/replace with super su & maybe add a recovery If that's possible In the future? I'm sure one of the excellent Devs we have in this forum will work it out sometime soon
There is this guide but not sure if it will work or not?

Some say it does & some say it doesn't?
That is the guide I used. It worked then after a reboot now i get the boot logo then a black screen
This is great to see working!
There are two initial goals I have with root, and I wonder if others have progress toward them or can point me to threads I'm missing:
1. Get Google Play Store installed so I can access my premium apps. But guides I see for AFTV (non-Stick) like this require Xposed, which tells me that it's not compatible with this Android version or architecture.
2. De-bloat by disabling Amazon junk that is known safe to remove without bricking the device. I have firestarter, but I don't know if that itself relies on an Amazon app to run since it never actually made itself a Launcher. I usually use Titanium Pro to freeze/thaw system apks, but that would require me to get #1 working first. If that's not possible yet, any other good apps for freezing apps temporarily? Has anyone been cataloging what can and can't be uninstalled?
thanks for any tips.

Thanks. I used ES File Explorer to backup and uninstall "KFTV Launcher". FireStarter still works. I don't think I have any way to check free RAM right now, and the stock Settings app doesn't work now.
It would be great to get Google Play Store and access to my paid apps.
