Hello,
Im running HTC 6800 (titan) with Resco file explorer (with the network addon). Im able to view and access shares from my desktop or laptop PC's at home (wireless via WIFI) with zero hiccups, it works A-one.
Here is my dilemma.
I cannot access my external usb drives (2x western digital Mybooks, 500gig each) which are connect to a Linksys NSLU2 Storage Link which is connected to a wireless router. Basically, the Linksys NSLU2 Storage Link makes my USB drives accessible anywhere.
So, to summarize.
USB 2.0 External hard drive ----connects via usb to-----> Linksys NSLU2 Storage Link -----connects via Ethernet to-----> Wireless router -----> which then gives my HTC its own DHCP ip/subnet mask (which are correct for my home network, since im able to view PC/Laptop shares).
Is there a reason why i cannot view these 2 USB 2.0 hard drive shares from my HTC? I can perfectly view them on my Laptop or desktop wireless. In Resco file explorer 2007 i go to my network places and see shares from my laptops/desktops and can access them... but for some reason i cannot see the hard drives. I also put the \\Linksys\hardrive1 manual UNC path to map the share but it didn't work.
Anyone wanna throw some things that i should be trying?

I have a Samsung P3113 running ICS 4.0.4 and am having exactly the same problem with the added wrinkle it complains about bad user/password when I know they are valid. My slug has been flased with unslung.
Frankly, I haven't got a clue where to go with this.
Anyone have any inklings?

After my install of Full Android v2.2 on my Shield TV I cant get the controller to connect wireless. I installed the keyboard layout files and can connect with usb. So following zulu99 post I installed DroidMote Client and Server on the Shield and connected but I still cant get wireless to work. I'm not familiar with DroidMote so I could be using it wrong idk. His instruction here are not really clear.
Could somebody help me out with this?
You have to tether the controller with your phone, as I understood. Is your mobile with droidmote connected to the shield?
so you have to connect the controller with the phone and this should work. I haven't done this because I use the controller wired.
I recently bought a Samsung Smart TV and I am trying to create a media hub to attach my external hard drive to so I can watch them on my TV. I want to know if I can use Shield to attach 8 TB hard drive with all my movies and shows on it and watch them on the samsung tv in 4K. I also want to be able to wireless transfer files to/from my external drive using laptop. I tried watching with my laptop (connected via HDMI) and it buffers when it comes to 4K. So does shield help me with this or do I need a different device for this?
I thought the purpose of "smart" TVs was that they could do streaming and such by themselves?
It can stream but content such as 4K buffers because there just isn't CPU power inside them.
The Shield should be able to do that, but I haven't tried it so I can't say for certain. You'll need to connect it to your laptop by the micro-USB cable or install a server app to transfer files.
I want to stream it using content on my external usb drive. So that way I don't have to keep my laptop on all the time. Can I just plug my external drive to one of the USB ports on to the shield and stream it directly? Will there be any buffering or any type of lag when doing this? (Again this is with 4K content)
I can't answer that because I don't have a 4K TV, but it has a fast processor and plays 1080p content just fine. A quick benchmark put the USB3 read speed at about 95 MB/sec.
It can definitely handle 4K media, it is even somewhat future proofed with support for HDR 4K video. There isn't really an easy way to share files from your laptop to it with the Harddrive plugged into the SHIELD TV. I would recommend buying a NAS and connecting your drive unto that since all the NAS will do is send the files over your network to the SHIELD TV. As long as you either have an AC router or gigabit ethernet you should be fine.
Do you recommend any cheap NAS that works? Does it need to have processing power for encoding streams? Or that is done via Shield?
Synology products are nice. You order the hard drive(s) separately.

Hi,
I have a couple questions about the Shield TV writing to NAS, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
My network set up is gigabit. I have Virgin Media 350MB Vivid cable connection and all my mains fed devices are wired.
My VM Hub 3 is set in modem mode, connected to an Asus RT-AC87U AC2400 gigabit router (all ports used) which feeds 2 Netgear gigabit 8 port switches, my Asustor AS5002T NAS, and another router set up as a switch for Wi-Fi extension upstairs.
One of the 8 port switches feeds my media devices (TV, TiVo V6 (with LAN), AV Receiver, Blue ray, Droidbox T8, WDTV Live , Mede8er MED800X3D) with no problems - everything works great.
I'm looking to buy the Shield TV 16GB which should make the WDTV Live, Mede8er streamer and Droidbox T8 redundant (hopefully). I think most things on the Shield will work fine but I'm not sure about it being able to write to my NAS.
My NAS is an Asustor AS5002T and has 2 internal 6TB WD Reds set as separated drives and formatted as EXT4, these hold everything (all media, backup for everyone in the house, PC backup images for all my PC's and Laptops). My Media (Movie, TV series, Pictures, home movies etc) is stored in 2 folders on 1 6TB Red (Media 1 and Media 2) I also have 2 4TB WD My Passport's connected to the USB3 ports with NTFS formatting which I use to back up my Media 1 and 2 folders only.
Both Media locations (WD Red and WD Passport) are shared and accessible via my WDTV Live and Mede8er but I only use the Mede8er to scrape metadata information which is then stored on my NAS.
Q1 - can the Shield write this scraped information to the NAS, I use NFS sharing for both my streamers and have had no problems saving scraped data to the relevant folders once scanned with them?
I only scrape my Media1 and Media2 folders on the WD Red drive (with Ext4 formatting) I then have some file comparison backup software to backup onto the WD Passports. All works well.
I have read that the Shield (Android) is unable to write to NTFS partitions over the network and was wondering if Ext4 is any different?
If I can't write data over the network from the shield to the NAS it looks like the only option would be to use the inbuilt movie and picture app, SPMC or Kodi to write the scraped data to an onboard memory location if this is possible (I have no experience with the built in app and very little experience with SPMC and Kodi) but if this is an option I don't mind the learning curve ahead.
Question 2 - all my devices are connected through my Onkyo AV Receiver, is there any issue with the Shield and AV Receiver connections?
sorry for long post, though it better to give as much info as possible...
Hello friend of ShieldTV
Did you get this fixed @greig2000uk ?
I have similar problem:
I have two ShieldTV (2017 / 16GB / 8.0.1) and both are rootet with Magisk.
But i can not WRITE to my attached network storage (NAS) for security reason.
Did you (or anybody) know how to get this fixed?
Some apps (handled by plex) should be allowed to write to my NAS (i did not test this, because this would not solve my problem).
I need WRITE ACCESS for ALL of my installed apps (or even choose some specific apps for myself).
So - if you get this problem managed, pls let us know how to fix this limitation
thank you !!
Hi
Format your NAS drives as EXT4
Set shared folders to allow admin privelages under "Access Control" for read and write
Set apps or network places accessing the NAS with static IP's in your LAN DHCP server
Set NFS priveleges (for the above devices) with the static IP's of your LAN DHCP server for read and write access
hope this helps
If I attach a USB hard drive to my Netgear R7000 (readyshare) will I be able to access it on my Nvidia Shield? I'm afraid that if I mount the usb drive to shield It'll be locked down to the shield only.. Also, if I can access all my data off of readyshare through the shield, can I mount an additional hard drive(or a usb flash drive) to my shield for even more combined storage?
Yes. I had R7800 for about a week and it worked fine. I have an external drive attached to my Asus Rt-AC86 now. I use Plex to access the media but have used Kodi also. With Plex I pay for Plex Pass.
Strangely, it works better this way than when I had the drive connected directly to the Shield.
I can still plug other drives into the Shield and access media/files on them also.
As to your concern of the drive being locked down to the Shield, I've never encountered that unless there is a way to mount it where that could happen.
*** After further thought, I only used Kodi while the drive was connected to the Shield.
