Band unlocking? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I've been waiting to find out if LG would enable bootloader unlocking on any of the V20 models before buying one. And now they allow the US996 to bootloader unlock.
Unfortunately, the US996 is missing a bunch of bands that are available on the H990. Specifically, I'm interested in LTE bands 1, 28 and 40.
So now I'm wondering if anyone has tried unlocking bands.

I would be interested too, but waiting for warranty to expire before unlocking bootloader and trying to release bands.

Probably not happening. H990ds is the dual SIM variant. Different radio. Check for up to day root progress for your variant. Best\only alternative since LG isn't making the first move.
Edit: up to date. Leaving the error.

Which version of LG v20 to buy?

I want to install custom Rom on LG V20. Which carrier should I get it from, T-Mobile, Att, Sprint, Verizon? Thanks.
You should get the US996 unlocked version. It will work on all the carriers plus you can unlock the bootloader on LG's website. All the others you will need to use Dirty Santa to unlock unless they have newer firmware which cannot unlock yet. You can get the US996 fairly cheap. Just make sure it is the US996 unlocked not the US996 US Cellular version.
Is there a way to tell if a phone is the US Cellular version or the actual unlocked version?
Already got burned once buying a US996 from ebay that was labelled as factory unlocked but it was actually a US Cellular.
I'm hoping there/s something on the sticker under the battery that will have the answers but nothing obvious from what I can see.
Does the US996 model support all TMobile bands including band 12 and VoLTE, wifi calling? Thanks.

LG G6+ US997U LTE Bands Unlock

I am planning to buy an LG G6+ US997U(Model no LGUS997U.AAMZBK) and import it to India for the simple fact that US997U models are bootloader unlockable.
The problem arises that the LTE bands being used in India are not mentioned in the FCC filing for US997 models.
As I understand the modem in SD821 supports all LTE bands and there are region specific software blocks to block other bands.
My question is whether after unlocking and rooting, I can remove those blocks so the phone works fine with the LTE bands in India.
Please Help.
you know only the H870 and US997 can be unlocked no other models like the h870d or ds or a u version
..but DS is quite different. (two sim) 997 and 997U are differ just in mem size and quad dac. So the boot is almost the same.

Yes I read in an Amazon review that there is official support for bootloader unlock for US997U.
Question now is whether I can unlock all the LTE bands available with the SD821 and whether I can flash the H870 or US997 recovery and roms(Lineage, AquariOS) on US997U?
@J0SH1X @rc420head Can you guys help answer this please?

Absolute nothing. No custom rom, no recovery, no root. ...and I think no system updates too for u, because it is an Amazon branded phone.
So... Is the G6+ (US997U) supported by LG Developer's bootloader unlock, or not? That's the real issue... not the fact that it's "just the memory size" because LG distinguishes support based on the IMEI/MEID. Consider the fact that all of the US99x phones are the same model number for the "unlocked" and the "US Cellular" versions... but LG will not send you an unlock code if you attempt to use a device ID from a device that is provisioned to the US Cellular carrier. The hardware is literally identical.
Also consider that the V30+ is in the same boat. The US998 can be unlocked on the LG dev site (with a little trickery - you have to change the website code in Chrome for it to work)... but the US998U can NOT. We're not really sure why.
Presently... the LG Dev Supported Devices List does NOT list the US997U (G6+)... so I want to ask anyone here that says it can be unlocked how they did it. It's hard to find info on xda, since the "plus" version doesn't seem to have it's own portal.
Thanks, all!
I tried to unlock my US997U on the portal (selecting US997 from the dropdown) and my unlock was brutally denied.
Extremely lame that simply having more memory means I can't unlock my phone!
is there any update on this? can LGUS997U be unlocked? I too was denied on the LG developer website

YEAH SUPER LAME!. the website denied mine too. SOOO LAME. because fastboot gave me the CODE... SO LAME.
Unfortunately, your device( United States, (AMAZON(USA)), LGUS997U.AMZ )does not support unlocking the bootloader.

What international lg v20 model no should I purchase

Because I want to be able to root it and install roms, mods, etc onto my lg v20 so I need to know what model to purchase before I can do all this. And also I have T-Mobile from my work for my own carrier I want to be able to get 4G LTE on this device as well. Thanks in advance

There is only one international model which is h990 dual SIM. It has the most bands enabled out if the box including TD DLTE. It has the least custom ROM support though. If you need official bootloader unlock us996 unbranded is the one to get.

why don't you go with the T-Mobile version. it's rootable, and has custom ROMs and kernels. Also you have all the bands necessary for 4g plus WiFi calling.

Real-life differences between VS995 and US996 (both unlocked and US Cellular)

Just looking for some clarification here.
I will probably be using this only on Verizon (mvno), though at some point I might like to switch carriers, but if that isn't possible I'll probably live with it.
It appears the US996 is the same as the VS995 except it supports a few more bands.
Am I able to use the US996 (both the unlocked and US Cellular) on Verizon?
Can you actually flash the VS995 firmware onto a US996 (both unlocked and US Cellular)?
If so, then the usable difference between a VS995 and US996 in this case is basically nothing?
If you are planning to use a custom ROM anyway (like Lineage) then is there basically no difference between the 3 models?
I have been using a US996 on Verizon with the VS995 Weta rom for almost a year. I have not gotten Voice over LTE to work, but I have not put in a huge amount of effort. I believe the VS995 has some radio bands the US996 does not, but I have had no issues from that. As far as I can tell everything else works.
I would suggest getting a sim card activated on a Verizon phone and the transferring the sim card to the US996. Verizon would not activate the sim card in the US996 for me.

Purchased LG V20 US996 but instead got a LS997 with US996 firmware flashed onto it

Hi Guys,
Got myself into a little situation here.... So I intended on buying an LG V20 US996 so I can unlock the Bootloader and install custom roms and have frequency band support here in Canada. But when I looked at the sticker under the battery, it says I got an LS997 (Sprint) model. I confirmed it's a sprint model by doing an IMEI lookup. The phone runs smoothly, nothing crashing. I don't notice a difference in the LTE speed (through speedtest.net), but do I have the frequency bands of a US996 or a LS997?
Can the bootloader still be unlocked? Will I have difficulty with LTE bands?

If the security patch is later than Dec 2016 then no, you cannot unlock the bootloader or root.

How can I tell the security patch version? The firmware says US99610p and the ARB says 0...
Guess I could flash an earlier kdz than Dec 2016, but would that mess up the calls, text, data ?

LS997 owner here. Yes, it sounds like you have an LS997 on ARB 0 that has been cross-flashed with US996 firmware to be SIM-unlocked. You probably still have the LTE bands of the LS997 (bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 25, 26, 41). Since you'll never need to use the Sprint CDMA part, you should be fine getting signal even after downgrading to an earlier US996 firmware. You can find the date for the Android security patch level under Settings -> About phone -> Software info (for Android 7.0).
At this point, other than the frequency bands, you can pretty much assume you have a US996 that is not the official US996 USA unlocked one (either US996 UCL or US996 BPT). And it looks like you already found the corresponding rooting guide for it.
