overclocking? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

So I'm extremely unsure with these new phones.
I came from Apple back to android because lets face it... When Steve jobs passed away the company had made some dumb, dumb, decisions.
So before my iphone I had a galaxy s4 that I rooted. My favroute part of root was overclocking it because the phone was not that snappy. I know "should say I think" that I needed to have a custom kernel to do that. I'm hoping that this phone never slows down, but if it happens to, how harmful is cpu control and such

Don't know. OYou might have to be the guinea pig to find out. Things.are changing and.changimg. might want to make sure TWRP is stable enough to flash a stock kernel, or better yet be able to backup and flash nandroids, stable.

[CLOSED/G2] So what if we cant flash custom roms...

so if the dual partion thing is true to keep from booting up custom roms, who here would sell their G2? i have already thought about this and i think i would, after having 2 rooted androids and having the freedom to flash whatever i wanted i dont think i could deal with a stock phone lol.
i don't quite have it yet, it would certainly hurt my chances of getting the phone, but i honestly don't think that HTC would falsely advertise their device just to allow them some anti-hacking BS, it gets tedious trying to break each phone and it only takes time to break it down.
why would dual partion stop us? We will just have to flash both
and if that is true then it would make the phone great for the noobs because that mess up in the system all they gotta do is reboot
but never say never they said that about the ps3 an look now. Anything can be cracked with enough time
I don't have mine and I won't until it's been confirmed as easily rootable (permanent root) and rommable.

Curious about the latest OTA and Unlocked users.

So the past week has been complete chaos in this forum and I find myself asking the same question over and over.
If you're a user with an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery, why in the name of all that you hold sacred would you want to go to Motorola's latest release? (I would understand if this was the official ICS Release, but it's nothing more than a minor update.)
I ask this, because between the latest CM7/CM9 releases and other stable ROMs, I cannot understand why anyone would risk to so easily brick their phones just to put that cancer known as MotoBlur back into them.
Maybe I'm missing something, I just don't see myself going back to any of that or even consider the potential risks having an upside to them at all.
I for one like MotoBlur, it comes with the nuance voice commands, which is the only no-touching no-looking way of using the atrix with a bluetooth earpiece. (please, anyone, prove me wrong on this, I've given up trying)
But that aside, I want to run the latest stock rom just to experience it, and if i were to sell, stock would attract more buyers.
I risked bricking my phone to get the custom roms so it's no difference for me to take a risk on a stock rom. I just make sure I'm educated on what others have done and recommend before I take the plunge.
Well, I chose to because I want to ready the phone to sell as soon as I get a new phone but I'll leave a couple other reasons:
1. Prerogative
2. Opinion

I don't see any compelling reason for anyone with an unlocked bootloader to move to 2.3.6 either.
My phone is rooted, locked and on 2.3.6. Nothing a "must have" IMO over 2.3.4. I like motoblur...moto should really do away with the motorblur name though, bad history. I don't have many functional requirements, just stability and good battery life. The stock 2.3.6 satisfies both requirementsfor me, so no need for CM7 or custom ROMs for me. I code all day at work so the last thing I want to do is mess with flashing development ROMs on my phone .
It will be interesting when/if ICS is pushed out and how that will interact with unlocked bootloaders.
I'll probably upgrade to Nottach's latest for the sake of being upgraded. But no way am I messing with the OTA update. I'm actually more worried for my husband's phone as he's rooted with the webtop hack, but still has a locked bootloader -- if his phone screws up he doesn't have the custom recovery to flash a working rom. (Yes, I know to put the stock webtop files back & unroot it beforehand, but still.)
The ICS upgrade is going to be interesting times, methinks.
I need motos official releases because none of these custom ROMs have WebTop. I enjoy using my LapDock. The latest update seems perfectly safe as long as you do it correctly. Just download all 4 zip files in this thread.

Then flash each one in CWM and you're good to go.

If you mean dragon voice you can get it with Swype or I believe on the market too. I've had my phone since it came out. As soon as the b/l was unlocked I got rid of blur and never looked back.

No, Dragon is not the same thing. With motoblurs stock "Voice Commands" I long press the button on my bluetooth earpiece... I say a command like "Call voicemail"... I hear the confirmation "Voicemail, Calling" and then the call is started. A double tap on my earpiece hangs it up.
This works without having to wake up or unlock my phone beforehand. Truly a hands free operation that is unmatched by any other app.
As an HVAC tech, I work with my hands, often dirty or greasy. I sometimes work in tight spaces or high off the ground where taking my phone out is not easy or a good idea. I also do a lot of driving. For these reasons this feature is very important to me and so far only blur has it.
I know CM7 & 9 are faster smoother and cooler, but the latest stock is faster and smoother than the last and it's good enough for me. But thanks, I do appreciate your suggestion.

[OFFTOPIC][DISCUSSION] Your first hacking experience!

XDA Developers is a great place for people who want to put their phone to the max a.k.a HACKING!
I'm pretty sure a lot of people have hacked their phone before; rooting, download scripts, kernels, roms etc. So the purpose of this thread made is to share your hacking experience; how you started it, how did it go, what was the first thing you hacked inside your phone, did it work, did you screw up your phone etc. You should also state why you hacked and was it worth the hack. Also, another purpose of this thread is to encourage people to not be scared of hacking and try hacking their phones. (although is really up to you!)
So I shall start mine, right now!
So, after getting good results in my exam, my parents gifted me a Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 last year. It was one of the best smartphones I ever had(only had one....). So, the place where I bought the phone, the salesman said the phone had 1+3 years warranty. So, at that point I said to myself; I'm not going to modify, hack or install unnecessary stuff in my phone (to preserve my warranty).
Boy, was I WRONG! After I had 6 months with the phone, had a lot of apps installed and my phone began to slow down. I deleted apps by apps and still my phone was super slow. I realised, 4 years is too damn long to preserve. So, the first hack I did was rooting my phone. The reason I did that because there's this app called Screencast required me to root the phone in order to use my phone.
Of course, I was scared to hack my phone. So, I did a thorough research and go on with rooting. With enough balls and courage, I tried it. After following all the correct procedure. So, all goes down to my phone. Will it reboot or not? That's the question. So, I waited. And wait. And wait. THEN SUDDENLY, BAM! PHONE WORKS! I was so happy, there are a lot of apps that required root.
A few months later, I was a bit daring and tried to install a ROM this time (cause my friend using ICS on his S2, felt totally jealous . Also GB sucks, no offense). Opened Galaxy S Plus I9001 Android Dev page. BAM! Roms, and roms and a hell load of roms! I tried the most safest ICS ROM, Acro86's ICS CM9 ROM. Again, was scared to tried, but then again my warranty is a done deal. So I went for it. BOY IT WAS FREAKING WORTH IT. Didn't really know my phone could run ICS/JB. Phone really smooth, lots of apps I used before now is smooth. It was really worth the shot.
Long story short, You SHOULD try hacking, because you can get all the awesome stuff in your phone. I say you should try hacking because it is a load of fun!
Now, I'm currently using hypnos17's BioHazard V5 with TWRP recovery. Really nice and smooth.
So, now. What is your first hacking experience? Please share it to everyone! This thread may help a lot of people people out there! :victory: :fingers-crossed:

Credits to the guys who made these roms! :highfive:
Nice story! Mine-
When I first got the SGS it was already a bit old, the SIII was already on the market. I heard about people upgrading their Android to something better than what the cellular company gives you, and I knew I wanted to do it. I knew nothing about it, so I went to my brother in law who also has an SGS.
He rooted my phone and installed the latest nightly version of CM9 at the time. After a while my friend also learned how to do it, so I tried CM10, CM9 again (a stable version), switched to Slim Bean, etc. One time my phone didn't boot after a flash and I thought it died, but in the end I managed to get back into CWM.
I don't think I'm going to try anymore roms (just update my Slim), because it's way too much work every time and I don't have the energy for that... So unless I find what I'm looking for in a rom (a good and fast rom, that looks like Samsung's, and one that syncs the Facebook friends with the contacts without having to use a third-party app)., I'm not going to change it again.

Any hope in development?

In case you guys haven't figured it out yet, development, Imo, is dead. There isn't stable root, no rom development outside of slightly modded stuff to change your status bar and the most recent breakthrough was substratum... Which wasn't even meant for this phone but rather the s8 but it still works. Now I use and love substratum but I really want an aosp/pixel rom and stable root and Xposed but I don't think that any of this is coming ever. I could be wrong. But I'm tired of buying locked down Samsung devices because of this. This seems more like a rant but it's more of a psa to developers who wanna help the hopeless. Ya know?

I purchased this phone coming from an Iphone 6Plus, thinking I could definitely obtain root on the most sold android phone still in use. Nope. Pretty disappointing as I think it may be the best phone ever made.

I didn't do enough research before buying S7. Coming from Nexus 6p this is really foreign to me. I saw s7 had root but didn't look into the 2 different processors, all the different carriers (it doesn't matter on Nexus devices.)
Far as Development goes...its probably not going to happen unless someone finds a way to unlock the bootloader. Next best thing might be Safe Strap but afaik there's nothing in the works.
For now I'm making the best of it. I'm having a decent experience with the Eng kernel. Currently looking into the nonrooted Rom. My hope is I'll be able to make some changes (like installing viper) then switching to the stock boot.img and trying to make those changes stick. Supposedly it's possible but I'm still trying to get some guidance. Experimenting with this phone sucks because the process for root is pretty long then setting everything up THEN it might not work so back to square one.
Especially once done with purchase plan or contract (should you have one) and out of warranty. After that point, it's mine to do with as I please! (I know, should be able to do it whenever, but I'm playing by their rules for a minute.) So it's already BS for those who bought first few months and have paid off.
Personally, what is driving me crazy is battery drain. I'm running about 144k on AnTuTu, so no major complaints with performance, but plugging it in more than once a day sucks. Power drain when I'm not doing anything: sucks. I know it's all this useless crapware running in the background, even tho I killed some with Package Disabler Pro. Just addressing that would improve my mood. If AT&T is trying to ensure we'll all look very carefully at unlocked phones next time, they are doing a bang-up job.

Why is the Verizon S7 Edge root so crappy (serious, not being mean)?

Hey all,
First off let me just say great work to everyone involved with rooting this now "ancient" phone, especially klabit87 and jrkruse. Additionally, I do not mean to be ungrateful with this post, nor suggest that rooting a phone is easy, especially one with a locked bootloader, or that the users here are entitled to such a feature.
With that out of the way....
I haven't looked into rooting this phone EVER until now. Haven't even peaked at XDA or Googled anything, I didn't even know it was possible until yesterday. I've re-ROMed all my previous phones but was actually satisfied with the stock S7 experience other than a Launcher swap and dealing with the always laggy Google maps. Well recently I got a new car and got fed up with the obnoxious list/action limit that Android Auto has as the voice search can be quite unreliable, the letter search is somewhat bugged on the media player I use, and in the end all it does is encourage people to just use their phone to change songs/settings and send messages, thereby completely failing at its goal of being safer. So, I really wanted to get Xposed installed to use the module that makes AA a lot more usable; however, now that I've looked back into the scene a bit, I'm not so sure I want to move forward.
To preface my question: Every Android device I've had before was essentially either rootable or not and ultimately banked on a security exploit that was eventually found. There were never really any concerns about major issues unless you were changing ROMs, kernels, or testing major CPU behavior changes. Just rooting itself was almost always issue free other than a small bug or two or the need to reapply at reboot.
From what I gather, it seems to me that they only way currently to gain root privileges on this device is to install this ENG kernel that's talked about in a lot of more recent posts. Is it truly the case that someone had to write a kernel from scratch that was pre-rooted and as of right now there is no way to root the device as it is stock? Is it that the only known exploit is how to flash another kernel, and the stock kernel is still locked up tight? It sucks that the current root seems so unstable/slow. I know there are a plethora of fixes but there really is no one major fix (other than potentially reflashing the stock bootloader that for some reason seems to work), and its a matter of installing a boat load of CPU and resource management tweaks and even then the performance/battery life isn't quite stock. Additionally it seems like its definitely a YMMV kind of thing as some users seem to still have significant battery drain or slowness/heat even after trying tons of fixes.
Since I am just now getting familiar with the "homebrew" the phone I've had for 3+ years and know nothing about the work that's been done, I genuinely just want to know the technical implications that got in the way of a cleaner root and why the current root method is stuck as sort of a work-around so to speak. The people that manage these breakthroughs rarely post about the process they went through unless its pertinent to a guide on how to root, so I was just curious why the root for this device is in the current state it is.
I would really like to root my Edge so I can be done with the AA nonsense but after just getting a new battery put in I really don't want to go through ****ty battery life again haha.
Thanks to all who weigh in.
Verizon requires most if not all manufacturers to lock the bootloaders. This is also Samsung choice as well. The T-mobile S7/edge and newer have locked bootloaders as well. Difference is T-mobile leaves it up to the OEMs whether they want to lock it or not. With some U.S. businesses and enterprises using Samsung Galaxy devices. They focus on being "enterprise ready" which makes sense from a business standpoint.
Believe it or not, Samsung used to be developer friendly when the S II came out. They even gave away Galaxy S2 devices to some XDA devs.
So, if you want a Samsung device with an unlock able bootloader. Get one that has an Exynos SoC or the Chinese Snapdragon variant.
