RCS Messenger - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

Does anyone have RCS through Google Messenger? The articles I have read seem to indicate it went live on the 4th but I have not seen it yet.

Same here, I thought some people starting seeing the update, but I haven't gotten any prompt to enable RCS unfortunately.

Same here, I reached out to Sprint on Twitter and they have no idea what I'm talking about

I chatted with one on their website and same result.

The roll out is slow and only on some devices. I think they started on Nexus devices on 7.0. I got it activated on my sprint S7 edge when I updated to the Nougat beta.

Yeah, I'm on the beta as well and no luck. Typical though.

Anyone able to upload the beta?

Im on the beta too but I still have nothing. I dont think you need to be on 7.0 to get RCS but being on it doesn't make it work either

RCA got pushed to my S7 Edge running 6.0.1 today, got a notification to enable enhanced features in Google messenger

Well I guess I will just have to wait. I still don't have it.

Same here. Got it on the beta

Doesnt enhanced messaging in the stock messaging app do the same thing?

I was fully updated but received a messenger update last night and RCS was activated. I looked at the version number on the update and it included a phone version number. I guess that was the update and RCS activation.

No, RCS has additional functions. There are several articles out there about the differences.

It seems Enhanced Messaging on our phones does pretty much everything RCS on Messenger will do. Cant find much difference which is why this is so confusing. What advantage does RCS on Messenger do that Enhanced Messaging not do?

I also just got the update last night at around 2am EST. The advantage of RCS over enhanced messaging is that RCS is a new global standard, while enhanced messaging is just Samsung to Samsung. For that matter, Samsung will switch over to RCS soon as well, as they have pledged to support it and just recently bought an RCS company that is compliant the GSMA (global) standard. They are pretty similar, but RCS is just global vs enhanced messaging is limited.

SMS, MMS over wifi on Verizon

I was wondering if there was a way to get SMS and MMS to work over wifi with any app other than verizon messages. I've been a big user of that since they incorporated individual sounds for contacts. However, their most recent update has made MMS stop working entirely so I've gone back to Messenger for now. But last night I was at a bar with a friend and for whatever reason, inside the building a VZW signal was impossible. Outside the building it was fine....but inside it just dropped out. Wifi worked fine, but I was unable to send or receive any messages. Hangouts I cant remember if it could handle wifi for sms or not...and hangouts is not playing the correct sounds I select for contacts on my 6p.
i'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who used verizon messages that had mms stop working since that latest update. Of course they won't support the Nexus 6p, so I think we're stuck in a waiting game for now.
If you use Google Voice, you can use Hangouts for calls/sms/mms over WiFi or mobile data.
No.. I don't use Google voice. I've had my number far too long to switch to a Google voice number. I like the stock app.... But having the ability to text over wifi was nice with Verizon messages. I had a nasty exchange with their tech support. They kept telling me the same crap. I had to tell them as a nexus owner I'm not a tech idiot. It's on their end and started with their update. Fix it. Of course they continue to tell me it's my fault some setting isn't enabled when it is.

Just to respond to your google voice question. I had a number for almost 14 years. I ported that number over to Google Voice for 20$ one time fee and forwarded my google voice to my cell phone number.
I've been scouring the web for an old version of Verizon Messages and am coming up short. I'm hoping that by installing an old version, it will fix our issues. I'm going to try contacting the developer.

Its available on Amazon App store incase you are wondering.
right, but that is a really old version. I want the one right before this most recent update that broke it. Thank you though.

it is available on apkpure site. You can find many old versions. Just do a quick google search and you should find it.
Search Term: Verizon Messages APK
If I can find my S4 and charge it... I can use apk extractor to grab the old version of my S4 from before my nexus arrived. Also might be on my N7 if that hasn't automatically updated.
Big thanks to chichu_9! Inwas able to get last month's version on apkpure and now mms is working again, over wifi and vzw network. I just can't update the app anymore
Thanks @chichu_9 I got the apk from apk pure and all is working well again. Thanks.
So the Verizon Messages 6.0.2 works over wifi... correct?

yes, that is the version that I rolled back to on my phone and it has been working over wifi. MMS group messages have also been working.
I have 6.02 as well and everything is fine. I received an email from the VZW messages app team and they are aware and "working" on the problem
Adblock plus is blocking mms as of now. Remove it and mms will be back.
I don't have ad block and MMS is still not working on VZW messages. I'm completely stock. It's a problem with the latest update. According to Verizons email they sent me.. "we are aware of the problem and working to correct it"

Wear24 and Verizon Messages+

Did a recent update to our AW just disable messages+? I can't access the app any longer on my watch. Same for others?
Sent from my Android using Tapatalk
I'm currently on Android Wear 2.8.0 and still have Message+ working. I wish I could use Android Messenger instead but anytime I disabled message+ I lose other watch functionality.

just curious what functionality you lose? I'm guessing you have LTE for the watch?

When I disable message+, I'm not able to make/receive calls nor text messages (even with Android messenger installed). I also tried changing the default messenger app on my phone and restarting both devices. No luck.
And yes, I pay the $5 a month for LTE.

Android Messenger Issues

Anyone have any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this issue -
Have Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge on Verizon. Was using Android Messenger by Google as my SMS app. About three weeks ago, my wife's texts from her Samsung Galaxy S7 on Verizon (also generated by Android Messenger) started coming in under the name "Anonymous" instead of her contact info and I could not text her (either as a reply or a new message). After some troubleshooting, we both switched to the default Samsung texting app and I can, usually, text her. However, sometimes, I get "Error 5: Other Network Error" when texting her. By waiting a while the message will go through. Android Messenger (which I keep trying to switch to) refuses to send messages to her - via the phone or Android Messenger for Web.
I can't find any discussion that this is a known issue for Android Messenger. I can't find any settings on either phone or Verizon online that says that there's some issue. Does anyone have any thoughts?
hey i had the same problem.
what i had to do was disable the samsung messaging app before setting the Android messenger app to default.

Weird. Well, it won't let me do that for some reason, but I did learn that I was behind on OTA updates by about 2 months. After doing both Aug. and Sept., it works. Not sure why. Guess we can mark this as solved.

Visual Voicemail.

To whom it may concern; I don't know what happened but for whatever reason my visual voicemail no longer works. I'm enrolled in the Phone Beta program but I'm just now experiencing this issue. Another funny thing about this issue is a day after this happened, my carrier sent me a text about installing their latest version of visual voicemail which I've never used. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so, how did you correct it?
I've also received a similar text message from my carrier (TMO) but i haven't had any issue receiving voicemails.

I still receive my voicemails, but I can now only listen to them by calling my voicemail box instead of using the on screen visual voicemail as an option.

I use the Visual Voicemail on only one phone (my old G3). With the latest update it stopped working. Not sure what the deal is. Regular voicemail is okay.
Regarding the text message, they don't seem to give up. On all of my devices I get it. After deleting it I get it again on subsequent reboots. Quite annoying.

I just find it to be strange that a lot of people use a carrier unlocked device to avoid their carriers bloatware. It seems like TMO are trying to force their consumers to use their Visual Voicemail instead of the Visual Voicemail provided by the Google Phone app.

Same issue here, using Metro. So I'm guessing T-Mobile changed something on their end. Ironically, the official Metro visual voicemail app works just fine.
I just blocked the number that kept texting me
Not to mention, now my device status states that it's"locked", which is very strange since this phone is OEM factory unlocked.???.

I spoke with someone from tech support at TMO and according to him, if you don't have a Google Pixel phone, the visual voicemail and the chat features won't work.

Can't activate voicemail on T-Mobile

I went into the stock Phone app to activate my voicemail with T-Mobile, but each time I try I get a "Cannot activate voicemail" error. Did a lot of Googling, and it sounds like a lot of people have run into this. T-Mobile support was useless. I know I can use T-Mobile's Visual Voicemail app, but that would be my Plan B. I've tried installing and then uninstalling the T-Mo voicemail app. Has anybody else run into this and figured out a solution?

for clarity, the built in voicemail client is a VVM client?

Yeah, the stock phone app has built-in visual voicemail
Can't activate either. Even on old phone. The general consensus is they do not allow 3rd party vvm apps with their service.
This comes from someone who called twice, filed a complaint against first, and explained in depth what the issue was, spending 40+ mins on the call.
I'll follow the thread but it seems like you have to use the VVM app.
does att allow you to use your built in vvm client?

I wouldn't expect much in the way of updates on this issue. T-mobile has been disabling built in visual voicemail on Android phones for years with some sort of network side switch. A handful of people have gotten it to work on some unlocked Pixels and maybe one or two other devices, but the results are never reproduceable.

on my last phone (OnePlus 6T) I had to use the T-Mobile application when not rooted. When I had root I was able to get visual voicemail with transcription via the Google (Pixel) Dialer and changing some lines of an xml file in the root directory and also install the Google phone app as a system app.

We're talking about stock visual voicemail, not Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi calling. I also don't have issues with those.

Yeah voicemail is fine for most of us too. VISUAL VOICEMAIL doesn't work in the stock dialer. It requires the T-Mobile app downloaded from the app store. :silly:

so what do we need to do to pressure t-mo to make this work?
It's always worked on my pixel phones and I never never thought twice about it until aquiring my oneplus8pro. Now if it's working on pixel by default, I'm assuming there is a way for it to work on Kona, just need to figure it out. Just thought I'd share my opinion & of course if I learn something new, I will report.

That’s pretty lame forcing more spam ware onto us like this. Last built in VVM that worked for me using T-Mobile was with an unlocked USA mode note 9.
