Sad Day - Cracked My Phone Screen - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

So I finally decided to trade in my Note 7 and order an S7 Edge to replace it last Thursday. Since Sprint no longer offers 2 year contracts in store I had it ordered and received it on Monday.
Today I was at work for a meeting sitting in a lounge chair with my pocket only about 11" from the ground, when my phone slipped out and landed face first on the wood floor. It has an Otterbox Symmetry case on it and a screen protector so I figured nothing was wrong. About an hour later when I was looking at my phone there is a 4 inch crack from the bottom of the phone straight up the left edge and then ending about half way up the phone on the left frame.
I am very disappointed in how fragile the phone is, but thankfully Sprint decided to replace it for me for free. Originally I was going to get another S7 Edge but I had them send me just the regular S7 instead, thinking it would be less likely to crack without the "edge". As a long time Samsung fan I have to say it has just been one disappointment after another, hopefully the S7 can hold me over until the Note 8 next year.

I had the same issue 2 days ago. It slipped from my fingers (butter fingers I know) to the concrete. I asked for a replacement, but unfortunately is not free like yours, i have to pay a deductible of $200. Why do we pay for insurance...really?. But I truly miss my Note 7...good luck

Cracked Evo Screen, Thank god for Insurance!

so, i recently received a replacement Evo from the repair center, and not even a full week later, my screen shatters from a 2ft fall . I left my evo on my lap, and rushed out of my car and completely forgot i had placed my evo on my lap. Well hearing my phone smack the road was a quick reminder of it. Lucky Damaged screens are covered under free replacement from the sprint repair center. Sprint use to never replace damaged phone with out having to pay the deductible. is this new, or have i just been dealing with the wrong people? attacheted is a picture of my evo. by the way, although the screen is shattered, it is 100% fully functional .
I just went threw the EXACT same thing on Friday pretty much. The FIRST time my EVO ever fell (about 2~3 feet) it shattered the screen.
I stuck my EVO in my hoodie pocket in my garage and the rubber case had hung up on the materiel so it didn't get all the way in my pocket. I let go thinking it was all the way in my pocket (was in a rush to get somewhere) and it hit the concrete floor face down.
The outside screen was 100% ok but the inner screen, the one that actually lights up was shattered.
I took it to my local sprint store which was only 3 blocks away and asked about a replacement expecting to pay the $100.00 dollar deductible. I was informed there was NO deductible and that Sprint had changed the policy a couple months ago with regards to replacing the broken screens. I asked why the change, because so many have broken? The store manager said yep, pretty much. Easier to just replacement them then deal with pissed off customers and potential law suits over something that breaks SO easy.
Anyway they were out of Novatech screens so they sent me over to a Corporate store. Took about two hours to get it fixed. They replaced the WHOLE front and even gave me the old one back because I had a Zagg protector on it. They told me to go to Zagg.com and claim a warranty on it which I did, should be here within a week!
same here, i walked in thinking they weren't going to cover it. I myself use to cause a stink when they wouldn't cover cracked screens. makes things a lot easier when sprint actually works with you. now my replacement is on its way, should be there tomorrow. i really am considering buying the otter box.
But in the long run, seems as though MOST people end up paying more into insurance than they actually get out of it
I absolutely agree, you end up paying $100 just to get a used phone. I just checked ##786# my phone was initially activated 7/1510

You even had a screen protector and it still cracked?
I've got to watch mine more carefully. I bought the Sprint screen protector for mine. Even after countless drops no cracks yet. But i can see a couple cracks on screen protector but not on screen itself.
Yay for insurance, even-though many would pay more into insurance than they get, at least there is a sense of protection.
Yup, that is one of the sprint sold protectors, it helps with scratches... Thats about it. Yes, if you love your evo, be careful haha

A screen protector is not going to prevent your glass from shattering....lol

Same problem with my homeowners and car insurance.
One thing I realized about insurance....you only need it when you dont have it.

For people who crack lcd but not gorilla glass..call dell support

This is happening to a lot of people and unfortunately to me too. Just dropped the phone about a feet and the lcd got roasted. Not a single scratch on the phone.
If you look online everywhere it says that this falls under accidental damage and will not be covered. Infact dell official forums has a post by rep where they mention this.
Was prepared to shell out money for buying the screen glass combo from the UK website, however I still called dell support to try my luck. To my surprise they offered to ship in an exchange unit. So waiting to get my new phone .

How long have you had your phone for? This method may not work for people who are out of warranty.
I bought the streak in january and the underlying assumption in the post was that you are still under warranty. Should have made that clear though
I actually just got my replacement for just that. Looked the lcd was leaking around the edges. Glass was fine. I dropped it just a few feet while the Sreak was in its Otterbox and it landed flat on its back. Not a scratch. Worked fine for the rest of the day, then when I woke it up the next day, it was pooched. It was only 2 months old. Called up Dell mobility and they shipped out a replacement, no charge.
Same thing happened to me but it was already my second streak. Dropped in otterbox so not one scratch anywhere. Told dell it happened mysteriously overnight while charging. At first she said the best they could do was an "out of warranty replacement" for $230!!!!!! Uhhh no thanks.. The $80 screens on ebay look more appealing for some reason... But that wasn't the case for me. She said "thats what my supervisor said". So I asked to speak with him, after 10 mins on hold she comes back and tells me they are just going to send a replacement. WOOOOOOT!!
Order was placed on the 18th at 5pm and it arrived THE NEXT DAY 19th! I'm really happy
I hope I'm never going to have to do this. My Streak's lcd started to bleed on the edges but went away slowly after approximately a month.

funny how that works, mine has this problem and the longer it sits the less of a problem I have. This would be the 3rd time I would have to replace it and I figured i would just wait and see what happens. It seems to be self healing.
It's annoying as hell when you can't read texts on the edge of the screen. It's probably my fault- I repeatedly applied and reapplied a Zagg lcd shield then forced a silicon case on it.
My phone has also fallen on a wooden surface just recently, about a feet. I think the Otterbox Commuter case did it's job. Thank goodness the bleeding didn't come back nor the glass shatter. Fingers crossed this fragile phone lasts a long time.

Pre-ordered, received, loved, 5 days, corner drop

Hi to that love the GSIII,
Got my on Friday, I could not find a case I liked so I started shopping around.
Today at lunch, the phone took a 30" drop from a table, the display is going bad.
Any "constructive" ideas that might help me out?
Kind Regards,
Jim

:crying:
If there's no noticeable physical damage int he corner you could probably send it in as a defect. And why on earth you not put at least a case on the damn thing, regardless of looks. I almost want to tell you that you deserve it.
Ya think Ill definately get the Insurance.
Try returning it to wherever you got it from and hope they accept it
Otherwise you can pay Samsung to fix it for you or order parts an DIY
Do you have insurance? If so then they may give you one with a deductible fee
I am very disappointed by the s3 build quality, why couldn't they design a durable phone like s2

Poor guy. Well, the obvious is that this is a case of cracked LCD. However, my next question would be where did you buy it? If you opted in for Best Buy's Black Tie, you could get that repaired/replaced at no charge (with the exception of your monthly payment you pay). If not, Asurion will charge $125 deductible.. or the service centers are $99 last time I looked (I've been out of the repair game a few months).
If the crack isn't evident (because it is har dot tell in the image) where you can see the crack of the LCD (not the glass of the digitizer, as that appears to be fine) but the spider web effect of the LCD... the store might unknowingly exchange it. Personally, I'd be honest with them. I had a defective EvoLTE that I was waiting to swap when three days before S3 release I dropped it and cracked the corner of the digitizer. Best Buy was kind enough to exchange me anyway, simply because I spoke up and said what happened.
Best of luck to you!
Actually most places will still let you add on the insurance since its still under the 30 day window. Just wait it out a few days and then see about getting it fixed.
Did you cry yourself to sleep that night?
Ouch... I'd probably be depressed if I was you lol. But hopefully you'll get a replacement. Good luck

Omg... I would of died. I literally took the case off my phone, opened this thread, and then put the case back on..

I would've cried too, I almost had a drop today at work and my life flashed before my eyes. I don't have a case on mine, the beauty of it is too nice to cover. I will give you all permission to say I told you so if/when I drop my phone.
check out step 11

and and lcd/digitizer combo on ebay....275 ouch.

best bet claim insurance, 199 deductible(assuming since s2 variants are still 199)
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/en_US/pdf/wireless-phone-insurance-deductible-schedule.pdf
Thanks to all these I dropped my S3 threads that are starting to popup I got a 30% off coupon at square trade and bought a ADH warranty.
The problem is that the att stores do not have them and you will have to ship it off I believe. In any event, a hassle. For those of you that get your phone go to ATT or wherever and slap a case on it You have 30 days on the case also. So what if it is not your ultimate case. Protect the phone! It is slippery!
I have mine in a TPU case (8 bucks) and a neoprene sleeve I've had for a while.

diztronic.com sells a semi-transparent grippy matte case for $10. Brand is highly regarded.
I get mine sometime this week, but I don't have a phone yet. I'll post pics.
Damn man, that sucks. I'm gonna baby the hell out of my phone, if I ever get it, until my Incipio Silicrylic Dual Pro arrives in a few days

Anyone else destroy/lose theirs already?

Welp, my wife questioned me when I chose to get insurance for the first time when I got my S7 Edge last week...
Turns out I'm glad I did....
I was fishing today from the seawall at a river nearby. My phone was in the cupholder of my folding chair, and I got up to grab a bottle of water from my cooler. A gust of wind blew the chair , along with my phone, into the river.
The water is roughly 15 ft deep where this happened, and I'm no scuba diver, so needless to say, the phone is dead and lost.
Again, so glad I got the insurance!
Man... That sucks. If you swam down and found it, I'm sure it would still work. Who knows? lol
You gotta be careful with these devices. Especially an all glass beauty like the S7 Edge.
After spending $800+ on a device, I am always extra careful.
Maybe it's also because I don't purchase any extra insurance either.
I've got the claim filed and got notification that it was approved - it appears that they are sending me a gold phone to replace my black one.
Just glad they didn't send silver/titanium because it looked a bit... "cheap" in that color.
Right now the water is so murky that I'd be lucky to see 1 foot past my face even with a mask on. With the current plus said murkiness, there's no way I could have found it.
Yep, the replacement came and it was indeed the gold model.
I expected to absolutely hate it, but it's growing on me quite a bit! I'm thinking I may have actually gotten gold had they been available at the AT&T store when I bought my black one originally - all they had was the black and silver models (still say the silver looks cheap!).
I strong recommend insurance if you don't have it!
I have the family insurance. Cost $20 per month but covers devices not even on the att plan. It ended up being cheaper for me since I have 10 devices with att

Screen Coating Worn Off?

Please take a look at the photos I attached. I noticed the wear a week ago, but just getting around to posting this now.
I have always kept my phones in my left jeans front pocket. Since the Galaxy S7, I've worn the same jeans (Don't hate! Love my naturally worn faded denims). Anyways, no issues with the screen on the Galaxy S7. Fast forward to now with the Galaxy S8, I received it on release day, and now have a smudge mark that won't go away. I did some investigating, and where the mark is on the screen matches up to a seem in the pocket. So after weeks of putting it my pocket and walking around, the seem in the pocket appears to have rubbed whatever coating on the S8 screen off in that particular location. Something the S7 never had an issue with.
Any thoughts? Is it repairable?
Maybe a warranty issue with Samsung? Sorry to see that.

Just got off the phone with T-Mobile. I've got to bring in the device to a store for them to determine if it's a manufacturer defect or my fault.
Strange things is, using a microfiber cloth removes the smudge, but after I rub it with my fingers for a few seconds or water gets on it, it appears. Which leads me to believe it is the oleophobic coating that wasn't applied right.

I'd agree with your assessment good luck. Still frustrating.

It's the oleophobic coating that has been worn off. If you look on Amazon there are some repair kits that work to repair it but they only last for a couple months. Same thing happened with my Note 4. If you get a screen protector it will mask the wear. For some reason I've only had this happen with Samsung phones so I assume they either skimp on the amount or quality of the coating coming from the factory. I always use a screen protector not just for scratches but because of this exact issue.

UPDATE:
Last night I called T-Mobile and spoke to customer service. They said I would need to bring it into the store for them to look before exchanging for a new device. The manager at the store immediately said I need to go through Samsung. I left and called T-Mobile again just to make sure, and customer service said yes, I would need to go through Samsung. So I spoke to Samsung and had my ticket raised to various departments and no one really had any clue as to what the problem was. Finally reached a rep that said they would repair it, but I would need to send it in, and no ETA for return and no phone replacement while mine was getting "fixed". So I hung up and called T-Mobile one last time. I spent 30 minutes on the phone describing the coating issue, and I said I would like a replacement under warranty. I was placed on hold for a few minutes, and he came back on and said they will send me a new phone under warranty (NOT insurance! Always double check!).
So, that's taken care of now, but what a hassle.

Thank you for the thread. I have the exact same issue, in nearly the same spot. A cloth rubs it off, but if you get any moisture in that area, it comes right back into being. I bought direct through Samsung so its likely to be a PITA to get it fixed.
