Since a few months ago, my S3 only charges when turned off. I can get it to charge while turned on only by using options in the USB_TEST section of engineering mode , but all of the new roms dont have engineering mode, so I'm back to having to use an external battery charger, or an old rom.
I have tried multiple cables, chargers and computers. I have 3 batteries, and I have also changed the USB board, all to no avail.
I have tried all versions from KitKat to Nougat, all with the same problem.
OTG works, and I can can use Flashtools to install roms via cable, but USB mass storage doesnt.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to solve this?
Thanks

Hi there,
The phone in question is a Galaxy S i9000 with the latest CM10 (same problem occurred with CM9 and another rom, not based on CM I believe).
First of all, it never shows any signs on the phone that it's charging. However, when connected to a PC, it does charge (it doesn't look like it at first glance, but the battery icon fills up). When connected to a wall charger, nothing happens. It does not charge. I also can't connect it to the PC in order to transfer files etc. Just charge it.
I cleaned the usb socket carefully, but that did not help. I actually think it isn't a hardware problem, because this problem has sort of been coming and going during the last few days, and as I've said it charges fine via the PC.
I've tried 3 different roms, but no luck. Also tried different cables and wall chargers obviously..
Your help will be much appreciated!

Apparently over time the USB slots tend to get damaged due to constant usage, had this problem with a china made charger ( shows charging but never charges) and still lately even USB cables seems to need some replugging or slide movements to get connection. For insight , try the cleaning method.
Hey guys, since yesterday, my i9505 only charges when it is off.
When it is on, nothing happens. When it is on, if i connect the USB to the PC it also does not charge nor recognize any device (not even listed in "lsusb"). The connector is fine, because when i connect a USB OTG cable, and a USB stick, it mounts normally.
Also, from recovery and from Download mode, i am able to use USB cable connected to pc. So, problem is not with the connector.
I have flashed back to Stock, un-rooted, from ODIN. Still does not charge when is on.
It only charges when the phone is off. (Shows the battery icon, with a circle in the middle).
Also, i have tried annother battery too, and different chargers.
Any ideas?
Does not seem to be battery, does not seem to be software, does not seem to be connector, and does not seem to be charger.
obs: it charges when in recovery. (TWRP)
I have the same problem. Got it when going from 4.2.2 stock to 4.4.2 Pac rom.
Going back to 4.2.2 stock did not solve the problem
Any ideas anybody?

Mine was doing the same I changed charging port on my s4 and problem was solved
Yeap!
I changed the charging port too, and it solved.
It was actually very easy to change. I bought the part, and watched a Youtube video showing how to open the device..
Very strange, that it charged when the phone was off..
anyways,
it solved. I noticed that my original OEM charger with original OEM cable is only charging the phone with max 480mA... while, when i use my Tablet charger it charges up to 1500mA...
I know it should be going up to 1900mA or even 2A... but, it is not happening.
Maybe my charger is also faulty
...
at least it is charging now... =D

maybe it is a coincidence... try changing the port. If you have no warranty (like me), buy the part online and change it... it is easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCJcBltgE-I
If you are not corfortable, take it to some repair shop
I'm having a charging issue and am lost on what else to try to fix this. I can't charge using my OEM adaptor and cable, only when connected to PC with USB. The USB cable that works with my PC is the same one I use with the adaptor.
The USB port is on my phone is good, charges fine when connected to PC (although much slower because of different mVS). Read a suggestion to make sure the tab part of the USB connector isn't bent, it doesn't look damaged at all and like I said, has zero problems connecting to my laptop.
Have tried almost everything except going back to stock, and nothing fixes it. I've turned debugging mode off and back on, restored a backup from before the issue began, completely wiped and reinstalled 2 different build of ROMs with and without apps, fixed permissions, tried different kernels, different USB cables...
The adaptor is in good condition. But when plugged in while my phone is on, it doesn't recognize that's it's connected. Previously it would give a false charging reading. If my device is off, sometimes I would get the grey bar battery, but now it's just vibrating every few seconds. Idk what to do...
I have an i337m and am currently running slimkat weekly 6.2 but tried official 6.0 and restored a weekly 5.9 from before the issue began
I did format /data and /data/media (internal sdcard) I think right before the issue began in order to remove some old folded that would appear during cwm installations of zips from internal storage (e.g., hyperdrive for ex, which I haven't had installed since December) but that shouldn't screw up charging at all
Dude, you're trying way to hard. You're charger is messed up
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I hope that's the case lol it worked for a bit last night until I unplugged it, then when I plugged it back in nothing happened... seems to only work if power cycled after being connected to my PC
I have a really weird problem running Windows 8.1 whilst using my Galaxy S 5.
The phone, when plugged into any USB port keeps disconnecting and reconnecting like 2 times a second...
Things I've tried:
1. Different USB cables including USB 2 and USB 3.
2. Different ports.
3. Disabling 'turn off device to save power' in all USB hubs/devices through Device Manager.
4. Using 'High Performance' power mode and ensuring all 'turn off USB devices to save power' options are set to 'No'.
5. Reinstalling the Kies 3 drivers and software.
Here is a video of the issue:

Does anyone else have any ideas? This happens all the time on my laptop...
Yep, happens with mine too, and happens with my nephews S3 too
Also disabled power saving for USB etc
Seems to help if you switch between USB debugging and back again a couple times while it's connected
Is there anything like a proper fix for this? Does the problem stop on Lollipop?
tried a lot
cant connect ....
With the stock charger?
I put the S5 on my trusty 8A 5-port Anker, and immediately noticed this. If you leave the S5 alone, it will settle to constant charging at max amperage, according to Battery Monitor Widget's log.
Nevertheless, I haven't seen such before, not even with my Note 10.1 2014, which uses the same charge mode.

I've been fighting the exact same problem.
While I _believe_ there should be a software solution for this, since it wasn't always a problem, I believe it to be power related and have gone for a hardware solution.
The definitive cure for me (as of this morning) was to purchase an external *powered* USB hub.
(FWIW, an Ativa Mobil IT "Travel" 7-port USB 2.0 hub from Office Depot. And only because that was the only model where it could be tested before purchase without destroying the packaging).
S7 edge exynos variant, always show USB charging so charging slow all the time using USB even tried few charges n cables.
OTG power up the pendrive but no detected by the device.
Tried a new charging port yet still the same issue...
Anyone encounter same issue?
Me too have a similar problem
I have TWRP; so, I can flash custom ROMs,
pc cannot identify the phone,
OTG doesn't work.
NO fast charging - charging take around 4-5 hours, the phone always show USB charging
WIreless charging working (Including fast wireless charging)
it almost for more than a month
First, I thought some USB problem
SO, When the display is broken I changed it with a display with the frame which also comes with new USB.
Still no change, slow charging and no OTG
- I tried several ROMs & Kernels
- changed USB setting in developer setting
still problem not solved.
IS it hardware related or software related problem?
I have this problem with my g935a. No longer quick charge by cable, and PC unable to recognize.
