How do I reset my phone using PC Companion with root? - Sony Cross-Device General

Hi,
I have an Xperia Z5 with an unlocked bootloader, root, different kernel, different recovery and what not, but when I try to repair it using Sony PC Companion I get the following error:
ueGetPhoneInfoRootedDevice
ue_2003
Based on that error message, it looks like that it has to do something with root, obviously, but I would like to restore it to a stock Z5, just like how it came out of the store.
What do I need to do in order to recover it using Sony PC Companion, I have my TA-partition, so I can also restore that.

I do not think you can. You would need Flashtool to install a stock rom, and then restore your TA. I guess the latter automatically relocks your bootloader, but I haven't tried that myself.

Backup Apps/Games/Data before Updating to 2.3.3

Hi Guys,
Now we are waiting to update to 2.3.3?
How should we backup all data & whats the method to update??
I m in SG & my phone is rooted, can it be updated directly or I need to flash???
if your bootloader is also unlock,
first you may flash(using flashtool) the new hongkong ROM(LT15i_3.0.1.A.0.145_Hong Kong.ftf)
after that, you may proceed to fastboot the hongkong ROM image file(LT15i_3.0.1.A.0.145_Hong_Kong_system.img)
- that exact procedure worked for me (was using global .181 ROM before this new hongkong ROM)
the files i mentioned are given on other recent thread, easy to find and you may just find the from there
and for backing up all your user apps, you may use Titanium backup, then restore it once u flash the new hongkong ROM

thanks man, but I will wait for proper update in SE..my main worry is that my phone is ROOTED, how should I update once updates available in SG.
Also before updating (i assume that I need to flash my phone as its ROOTED), if I take backup with Titanium Backup, then it (TitBackup) will also be removed, then how will I recover my data after updating..
Sry if I asked something stupid

even if u wait for the proper update, the new firmware cant b rooted by using gingerbreak atm..
but its not a prob if u already unlock ur bootloader... u can try this first, n then when official rom for ur region is out, u can flash it back.. of coz its a hassle though..

after flashing and rooting,
you have to redownload the titanium backup apps from the market then install and it will still able to detect the backup file stored previously from your sd card (under "TitaniumBackup" folder).
and of course you still have to install also the busybox app for titatnium backup to work.

I've a exact thread and I'm in your situation!
I'm also using TB to backup my phone and now wondering how can I restore it if the phone cannot be rooted.
My biggest worry is not the contacts/SMS/Call Logs/System settings, but the applications installed and their data. My search continues and so far its been a pitch dark
I think that it's matter of time for a new version of gingerbreak to work with Android 2.3.3.
I just updated my non-rooted phone using pc companion and didn't lose any settings/apps.
When I am searching for update, m always getting error "Could not connect to Network"
Strange!!
I just did the upgrade from PC SE update, it upgraded 2.3.3 sucessfully.
1st reboot taken 10 minutes, take long.
Yes, no more root, but no data loss, all apps + data are still there.
cheers
James
when we download games/apps from market, where does .apk files goes??
Guys now since 2.3.3 update is available in Singapore, please let me know how to take backup of all apps/games??
Or should I go ahead with the update, all data will remain intact??
Note: my phone is rooted with GingerBreak!!
Tried to update using PC Companion, but getting following error:
PC Companion was not able to connect to the phone. Please disconnect & connect again.
For support, see the troubleshooting guide.
You wont need to backup your data. To successfully connect to the PC Companion Software make sure you are in the correct USB mode. The PC Companion Software will usually display a message how to do so.
Since gingerbreak is not available for 2.3.3 yet, I'm assuming updating at this stage means:
1. You wont lose any apps/photos you currently have on your phone
2. Can't root with gingerbreak yet so you can't really use titanium backup to restore anything (if you need)
3. The crap wares which we had previously removed/frozen are now reinstalled on 2.3.3
4. Once gingerbreak is available on 2.3.3, we would have to root it again and then go through the process of removing/freezing the list of crapwares?
Are these the right assumptions? Can someone who has successfully updated to 2.3.3 confirm this? Thanks.

Since my phone is unbranded I unlocked the bootloader and flashed a rooted GenericUK ROM. You can find it in the Xperia Arc development section. Of course all your data on your phone will be wiped, but you can use Titanium Backup to get itl all running again. Contacta were a bit messed up, no other problems encountered so far.

dun think there's a no need to backup unless u select repair
img199.imageshack.us/img199/9374/updatend.jpg
I have updated my arc to 2.3.3 !!
just to confirm there is no NO NEED for backup (if u rooted ur phone with Gingerbreak).
All ur apps/games will remain intact!!

[SOLVED] Your phone has changed software that can not be updated

Making a new post for this issue.
When I plugged in my phone to the PC Companion it said that there was a new update for it, everything went fine until the acctually updating should take part.
At that time I got an error saying "Your phone has changed software that can not be updated"
The only thing I have done is to unlocked the bootloader and then I rooted it with Bin4ry's method, nothing else.
I did try to do a "factory reset" of the phone through the settings, but that didn't help, I changed back the build.prop file to the original one, didn't help either. I haven't don any other changes to the phone.
Btw, after the factory reset I still had root access.

rooting and xrecovery.. please help me... please...

Sorry for posting another thread which will add up to the threads here but you see i'm having my doubts if i will root my x8 or not.. i have read the other threads and they say that rooting fails and also backing up using the xrecovery.. what i want to know is that what happens when rooting fails? will it brick my phone instantly? and another thing is that if xrecovery fails PCC is an option but what i have read is that PCC no longer has the repair function if the phone is rooted and flashed with a custom rom..
i really want the custom tom for the gingerbread and i always read and read for the updates.. but im having this dilemma whether to root or not to root because i'm really afraid that i might lose my phone's functionality and cant use it again.. im afraid of the risks.. please help me.. i really want the 2.3..
You can reinstall firmware with SEUS (SonyEricsson Update Service) or with FlashTool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12442257#post12442257
about rooting if it fails will i be able to root again immediately or do i have to do something else?
What makes you think rooting through flashtool will fail?
i mean there are issues when rooting fails in some threads right? when it sometimes stuck on a particular part.. you made the guide for ton how to rescue a bricked phone but i have another question.. if my phone bricks will SEUS still save it? i have something that SEUS and PCC became smarter because the repair function is not clickable when a custom rom is flashed..
please help i have this ultimate dilemma... to root or not to root.. i want my x8 to have the 2.3 but i'm scared if I brick it and will not be able to return it to what it was.. this is my only phone so i really am careful with it...
You can't "brick" your phone permanently because bootloader is locked. I "bricked" my phone many times and SEUS or FlashTool still repair it.

JUST DO IT! its nearly no chance to brick ur lovely x8 I root my phone so much times and I don't brick it just do it with flashtool but if you brick (somehow) try to repair it with pcc, seus, or flashtool... or you need to download stock Rom and you are done try some of these ways I have my x8 almost 1year and I never brick it that I need to repair it from seus, pcc, or flashtool just do it nothing can happen
Wyslalem z mojej zajebistej x8 za uzyciem tapatalk! BIJAAACZ !
Proadi96, wyjedź z tą sygną na forum zielonych, to zobaczysz co Ci z nią zrobią
@ontop - rooting bears practically no chance of bricking. You may brick your phone by installation of broken zips through xRecovery or by messing around with chargamon, but if you stick to normal usage you can't harm your system Besides, if all fails you always have flashtool.
And rooting is only a first step towards installing a custom ROM - installation of xR and busybox ahead of you Come on, don't be scared, just backup all you have (data before rooting, apps after - you gonna need root access for titanium backup ) and go for it
so here's what i have to do.. install the superoneclick (is this the flashtool you're talking about?, sorry i'm just practically a total noob.. ) then root with it. after that install busybox from the android market, then xrecovery from the tutorial. but root explorer is a paid app so how can i install xrecovery? any other alternatives for root explorer?
im getting convinced now to root my precious X8 thanks you guys..
Download FlashTool from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
Root:
1. Enable usb debugging and unknown sources in application settings
2. Start FlashTool connect your phone and click on root
xRecovery:
1. In FlashTool click on AskRootPerms, you must click on Allow in your phone when pop-up appears
2. Click on xRecovery
Superoneclick should get the work done, as for flashtool it's in my brick guide. It has many additional options, as you will see And if superoneclick rooting will fail, flashtool's one will probably get the job done And it will install busybox along with the superuser, as far as I remember... Superuser is the app that manages root permissions
E: Last time I installed xrecovery with flashtool it bricked my device, I would still go for manual installation...
And as for the root managers - super manager, ES file manager, choose to your liking.
does superoneclick fail always? i read the thread of the flashtool and it seems that it's complicated about the installation and rooting process
I don't know what you read, but it is as easy as with SuperOneClick. I posted instructions on previous page
what i read is the thread that you have given.. the long instruction there.. is it the same as what you have given? sorry for being a noob and thanks for your attention
Rooting with superoneclick and flashtool is exactly the same - usb debugging, cable, click to root. However, I was unable to root with superoneclick once, while flashtool never failed
E: And one more thing - if you have some antivirus soft it may tell you that SOC and flashtool are viruses - yes, they are, you need an exploit to get root permissions. If you have such an issue - kill antivirus
can you please give me instructions on how to root with the flashtool in the easiest way because what i have read from the given link is that the method is complicated.. XD
-.- Dude... The instruction is the same as the one posted by dbts25 for SOC... USB debugging in application options in your X8, usb cable and you click "root" button in flashtool. Can't be THAT hard, can it?
sorry for being noob.. i'll just follow that and disregard the long method in the download link for flashtool that he has provided.. after following that short method everything should be fine right? including xrecovery?
Eh... ok. Rooting does not equall xR, I hope you know it? So, after you root your device, you install the busybox app from the market. But that doesn't mean you already have busybox. You need to open it and choose to install the set of commands. Whichever you prefer, it will be overridden by xR files anyway. Then you get the xR package and place all three files where they belong. All done. You may reboot and get into xR. You may install any custom zip you want there.
I'm sorry for bugging you guys always but can you please give me a working link for the flashtool? after rooting then all i have to do is visit the market, download busybox there then download xR from the tutorial. after that i just have to copy the files to the xR folder using a file manager right? Im planning to use Adao file manager..

FAQ A.K.A The Basics
What is root?
Root is basically being able to run as a superuser in linux or admin in windows, giving you the ability to go deeper into the file system. It is a pre-requisite for most tweaks.
WTF is bootloader locked/unlocked?
For many people root is enough. However, if you want to change your kernel (for overclock etc.), try leaked builds or have a taste of custom roms such as Cyanogen Mod by FXP, you must unlock the bootloader.
What are ftf files?
They are essentially firmware files. They can be flashed with flashtool, and are used for recovering from a bad flash or getting updates from other regions.
List of ftfs can be found here.
Will be constantly updated.
The guides
Unlocking the bootloader
WARNING: You will lose Bravia Engine 2 for photos FOREVER! Before you start, do a full backup of your phone data with backup and restore app. Remember to take out the SD card after backup or you will LOSE ALL DATA. Unlocking the bootloader WIPES THE INTERNAL MEMORY (and SD CARD if you don’t TAKE IT OUT). YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
First check if your bootloader can be unlocked. Type *#*#7378423#*#* and click service info. If it says bootloader unlockable, you may proceed to unlock it.
Follow Doomlord’s excellent guide here. Feel free to ask questions if in doubt.
Relocking the bootloader
If you want to use PC Companion or Sony Update Service to update your phone, you must relock the bootloader. Follow this thread by alivanov79.
Rooting the phone
DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit (the very easy way)
1. Follow DooMLoRD's guide here. It's that simple.
Flashing kernels (unlocked bootloaders)
1. Download Superuser zip and place it in the sd card.
2. Install flashtool from HERE.
3. Open up flashtool and select fastboot option by clicking the lightning icon.
4. Turn off your phone and hold the volume up button while plugging in the usb cable.
5. Download Kernel with CWM.
6. Select the kernel you downloaded in flashtool.
7. When the phone restarts, continuously press the volume up key.
8. You should end up in the recovery. Use volume keys to move up and down while using the power button to click.
9. Choose install zip from sdcard >> choose zip from external sd card >> navigate to the superuser zip you downloaded earlier.
10 .Reboot and you are done!
The After Root Guide
First of all, congrats on making it this far. You have proven to yourself to be a daring and adventurous individual. :victory:
Moving app data to SD card
1. Install DirectoryBind here. Choose the latest in alphabetical order.
2. Open up your game and install the data on internal memory. (skip this step if you have already done so)
3. Use a file explorer to create a new folder in your external SD card. Name it "Game data" or whatever.
4. Copy your whole game folder(eg. com.ea.games.nfs13_row ) to the folder you created on your external SD card, eg."Game data". You can use a computer if you want to. Remove the files inside the game folder in the internal memory but leave the game folder intact.
5. Open DirectoryBind and grant superuser permissions.
6. Add new entry by clicking the settings button, a.k.a the 3 dots at the bottom right.
7. Hold on the box for data path and point it towards game data in the "Game data" folder.
8. Hold on the box for target path and link it to the empty folder in internal memory.
9. Do not check the "Transfer files" option.
10. Click add.
11. Turn on the button beside Root Access OK. It mounts the game data at boot.
12. Click settings >> more >> backup database
13. Done!

Are you even serious? BE2 is a big Deal!! without it, your screen would just be a regular low end device screen. The fact that our SP's screen is already inferior to S3's super amoled, and you will still remove the bravia engine? what's wrong with you man. Don't encourage people here to lose their bravia engine.
Guys lets wait for a proper root. It will come. just be patient.

You lose ONLY for photos, not for videos. It's NOT a big deal, since it oversaturates the photos anyway.

Sorry if my post offended you, what im just trying to say is, not everyone wants to lose their BE2, if it's cool with you then its fine, for everyone else I suggest wait a little bit more. here's a bit of infro from GSMarena btw:
From GSMArena: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_sp-review-924p3.php
The TFT screen is backed by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, which enhances contrast and sharpness, brings down noise and saturates colors to make them more pleasing to the eye. The reds in particular tend to really pop out.
The contrast is only average and colors are hardly the best around. Brightness levels are pretty decent, though.

you can only lose your TA partition if you unlock your bootloader, flashing a firmware ftf file does not touch that. please search and read the available threads on how to flash a firmware file and what you can and cannot check, the only things that people sometimes uncheck is wipe data, cache etc

There are 2 versions of flashtool, one is an official from Sony, this tool does not have the option and can only be used with a unlocked bootloader. The flashtool that can be found here in the forum can be used wether you have unlocked or not, it was originally designed back when the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 came out.
So to conclude
1. Make sure you have the latest version of flashtool installed.
2. Download your preferred firmware.
3. Open flashtool and click the lightning icon at top left.
4. make sure bootmode selected is Flashmode.
5. Select your firmware file when prompted.
6. Flashtool will now process the file (give it a minute or 2 to do this)
7. It will now prompt for you to connect phone in flash mode.
8. make sure your phone is turned off, in order to connect in flash mode while holding volume down
connect the usb, keep everything held down until the flash starts.
9. Follow onscreen instructions, it will take around 5 minutes for this to flash, flashtool will tell you went to
disconnect and reboot.

Actually the problem is that i m updated to the latest firmware which cannot be rooted at the moment. So i want to first revert back to previous firmware and then root and backup.
And in the guide i didnt find the option for exclude TA in the screenshot.

Or just wait for a root exploit to show up for the latest version. I mean unless you're planning to flash CyanogenMod or something now then why worry about it?

CORRECTION:
sony's official flash tool is for locked bootloader and not unlocked bootloader.
And the Sony's official flashtool require some login details. i went through a new user option. But i didnt receive a confirmation email.
I m giving flashtool a try now. Lets see what happens. God save me...

You missed something, you're supposed to edit the configuration file so that the program will allow use without a login. But it only works for unlocked bootloaders.
Follow the instructions in the link below and you'll get it running:

Read that if you don't believe me, read the first paragraph!
i quote "Flash tool for Xperia™ devices
Here you can learn more about the flash tool for Xperia™ devices, which is a desktop application that you can use to flash Sony software on your unlocked Xperia™ device. This is useful if you’ve for example flashed a custom ROM on your device, and want to go change to a standard Sony software. This flash tool can only be used by Xperia™ devices having an unlocked boot loader. Please note that your phone still stays unlocked, and that the warranty may still be voided."

Do not touch the bootloader at the moment, there is a reason why people are not unlocking their bootloader as doing this breaks camera functionality. Don't be scared, it is quite a simple procedure.
Flashing with flash tool will NOT break your phone and you can airways force a repair with pccompanion.
Just try it, it's perfectly safe

New Samsungs are worse, you can't restore them to a state where Samsung can't detect that you've been running custom software on it.

Unless you have a TA backup in which case you can do whatever you want.
I'm too much of a ***** to confirm the following theory, but I wouldn't be completely surprised if someone who flashed the wrong TA-backup was able to start the phone in fastboot mode, unlock the bootloader again (perhaps with the unlock token matching the new TA), and flash his own TA from CyanogenMod or something. (Do not quote me on this please, not taking responsibility for someone breaking their phone trying this.)
Restoring a ta that did not come from your phone will result in a hard brick, nobody should try it EVER
