Poor battery life - just the phone, or something else?

Hello,
My Nexus 6P, albeit a great phone, is starting to get a little slow and the battery life has suffered. My memory usage isn't high, around 2GB. I close all apps after using them. I haven't even used close to half of my 64GB storage.
I am a very heavy phone user, and I am having to recharge my 6P more than once every day. I cannot sustainably use max screen brightness as it drains the battery too quickly, a shame because maximum brightness on this phone is so beautiful!
From some testing, it is taking 2 minutes and 3 seconds to drop 1% in battery life at maximum screen brightness while watching YouTube. Round to two minutes, multiply by 100, and that gives you 200 minutes. 3 hours and 20 minutes.. that is silly, plus the battery drops off faster as the percentage decreases (I tested at 94%).
Realistically, I can get 2.5-3 hours on this phone at maximum brightness - is there something wrong, or is this just the phone? While writing this post in 5 minutes, I dropped another 3%...

It should be pretty obvious that a 2k screen at maximum (!) brightness can drain the battery faster.

Yes, but Techradar's test of a 90 minute video with adaptive brightness OFF (like me) takes battery down to 75%. That's 25% down in 1.5 hours, meaning the battery life of their test model would be 6 hours video playback, more than double what I get.
What gives?

Lower the brightness.

You're taking 1 instance of a test and multiplying it as it the variables within that instance will remain the same. Batteries drain faster the more they are used in an instance because of the heat. This type of test can be done with a flashlight. Turn it on for an extended period of time and then turn it off for a few seconds. Turn it on again and the brightness will be at max (for the batteries' capacity at the time), after about 5 seconds, the light will dim suddenly.
Same thing happens in phones. Manage your brightness.

So essentially, this is just the battery life of the 6P?
Seems a little weird to give a phone such a beautiful display but we are unable to use it to its full extent because it won't last.

I can't say that, but I can say there's no device that we can expect to just use that way. All devices (even outside of smartphones) are like that. If it runs on a battery expect not to be able to use it to its full capabilities for an extended period of time.
Cars are the same way. If you run it at max speed all the time (if there were no laws), you'll run out of gas extremely quickly, compared to 65mph. Same concept applies here. It sucks but that's the way it is.

The battery of this phone is poor, no doubt in that. However what I found is that my previous phone (which I had to RMA) lasted much longer than the current one. Around 1-1.5-2(barely)hr more SOT. Don't know how this could happen.
Yeah, 6P is not what I expected it to be.

Not saying you are wrong, but I feel like some say that about every phone. I will have to wait and see when mine gets here.
When the Note 5 came out there were so many people saying how terrible it was with battery life. Almost turned me away from getting it. Finally decided to take the plunge and guess what? It's pretty much the same as all the other phones I have had. The phone don't suck, our usage changes based on the device we have. I use my Note 5 more than I did my Note 4, battery still lasts me all day but needs to be charged about an hour after I get home. Note 4 made it until bedtime but I had a company phone to use all day.
I'm hoping the 6P can handle me all day. No pen to use so it should be fine.

I don't get why you're getting the 6P if you already have the Note 5. Like having two or more phones uh?
I got the 6P in place of the Note 5. I had a Note 4 before (it was defective I believe), it had terrible battery life (very rarely 4.5 to 5 hours SOT) and heats up to 75C very easily. Sure the 6P is cheaper, but I could've gotten the Note 5 if I wanted because this device is going to be there for at least 2 years. The thought of I can't bear anymore of TouchWiz was the only reason I got 6P. I thought the Note 5 would heat similarly and that 6P was better overall. But now I think I'm wrong, the Note 5 is a slightly better phone.
My 6P heats way too much (though not as much as my Note 4 did). Battery not upto expectation. Inconsistent camera (exposure problems). Throttling issues.

I actually don't mind touchwiz especially now that they have trimmed most of the fat and you can theme it now. Sad I'll miss out on AOSP/CM on it but I guess that's what the Nexus line is for. As far as the 6P being worse than the Note 5, I think it's based on usage patterns. The Note 5 has it's own slew of issues, radio especially for me, it does tend to heat up but not as bad as some other phones. Slippery as hell OMG!!! And that all glass thing is just absolutely nightmarish! It is still a fantastic device though and I will miss it greatly.
I'm getting it because of Project Fi. It will be cheaper for my wife and I compared to what we pay now for T-Mobile. We will be saving just over $60. That's date night once a month right there, Lol. I am actually getting rid of my Note 5, and unfortunately earlier today I dropped it on the road without a case on!!!!!!!!!!!:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

You do know that the 6P bends very easily without a case right (I got to know after I bought the device).
So you're getting the 6P as a replacement to your Note 5? I don't get why I see many people using the 6P after the Note 5. Is the 6P actually better?

I've found that since a security patch update around February that my phones battery drops so much quicker. I used to be able to get 5 hours sot. I've seen a few people post on this issue and with it being a software issue I'm becoming extremely frustrated with android. I'm ashamed to say I'm considering selling the 6p and getting an Iphone

Sometimes I go bare with it because I'm always "careful" lol. I plan on having a case for the 6P for sure. I'll probably go bare off and on once I get used to the device and become comfortable.

Pixel does not seem like it is selling so well.....

I actually posted this same post in the XL section by mistake, here is where I would get the proper feedback:
After reading all the forums on XDA I decided to go with the Pixel XL. I have been on a
waiting list for 2 weeks now so I am assuming these are backordered big time.
In the same instance I check to see what the wait is for the regular Pixel and it keeps going
down. Today you can order a 128 gb black and get it in 2 weeks, The XL I still cannot even order
it. I am guessing everyone is making the same conclusion that the XL model is the prefered model.
Those of you with the Pixel, what are your thoughts? I am afraid of the battery life of the Pixel vs the XL.
That is my number one concern.
When do you think we will see any more stock on the XL?

I don't have either phone. I did order the pixel and not the xl version. I ordered it from Google and I'm waiting till November 23 for it to arrive. I think it is doing as well the xl version. I called Verizon and I could get it sooner but the monthly payments on Verizon don't allow though to pay a little more to pay phone off early.
I was worried about the battery life as well. It looks like people are at least getting 4-5 hours of screen on time. That's enough for me. I just want a smaller phone. I've had the 6p and the S7 edge and I prefer a phone the size of the iPhone 7. I just don't want an iPhone.

Well availability doesn't tell us anything at all, it accounts for no variables. As far as preferred model the XL should definitely be it, considering the sizes of the best selling Android phones. The Pixel is rare for being a top-specced one handed device.

Got the pixel. Battery life is 2 days easy. I love it.

Is 4-5 hours of SOT out of the Box enough for you? --> take it!
I really enjoy the snappiness and the quality.

Battery life is really good. I am at the end of my first day with full charge, currently 42% left with 4h11m SOT. I would put it on par with iPhone 7 plus (which is the phone I came from).

I've got the phone for a few more days now and I am averaging 5-6 hours SoT. Certainly not as good as my initial post, but still very, very good I would say.
I don't do a lot of crazy stuff on my phone, just a lot of Hangouts, Redditing, some browsing on Chrome, and checking ESPN (+fantasy) for scores. Some music and reading every once in a while. 'OK Google' is always on and I have 2 Google accounts + 1 Exchange account syncing. High accuracy location on.
I have used a lot of Android phones in the past (as recent as 6P) and this is the first time I don't have to tinker with every single setting to get usable battery life. I am very impressed.

I have had a large majority of the main stream Android phones to exist and to this day I have NEVER gotten SOT life like this. I simply do not get how this is possible. Now, with my Pixel I still get a maximum 2 hours of SOT. Do you use your phone non stop all day? I think I get good battery life, my phone will survive 2 days with around 2 hours of SOT - I have just never seen such SOT even when I actually use my phone constantly all day.

I use my phone on the bus, during lunch and casually on the couch when I'm at home. I wouldn't say I am on my phone constantly.
From my experience the biggest battery issue about Android is always idle drain. Doze helps a lot but you really need to get rid of apps that drain unnecessarily, or apps that maintain calls to Google Play service frequently. Social network apps are really bad at this, which is why I make an effort to use their web apps as much as I can.

That's my thing. The only "social media" app I use is Instagram. I try really hard to have good battery life and my phone has really negligible idle drain. I think I just don't actually use it enough to see those SOT numbers.

for an average medium user, i think the phone will give 3-4 hrs SOT over 36 to 40 hours of usage easily.

I'm seeing a minimum of 3 hours SOT over 28-36 hours of mixed use on a regular Pixel (browsing, phone calls, Google Inbox, camera, some Facebook, some texting). I'm usually connected to Wi-Fi and a good 4G signal.
Had the Pixel for a week and even the first 24hrs (with lots of extra playing around + downloading all my apps) saw around 3.5 hours of SOT. This compares favourably with my previous Z5C (smaller, lower resolution, display).

I have the Pixel and I'm overly satisfied with it. Yes, it's pricey, but it's premium. In all honesty, all of these flagships could be cheaper (iPhone, S7, HTC10, etc), so i don't consider the price a negative. I personally love the minimal, straightforward industrial design. People say it looks like an iphone, mostly because that's what they are familiar with, but it just looks like most standard smartphones from the front. Personally, I think it far more reflects the HTC phones of today and before (they've been doing aluminum on the flagships longer than anyone), and is EXTREMELY well built. Regardless of how complex or not you fell the design to be, it's done very well. Otherwise, it's spec-ed as-well-or-better than any other device. Top notch SoC, camera, etc.
Hardware aside, the software is really the strength. I wont go into every nuance, but it just *feels* like a very complete package. Google has been very careful to tie up many of the loose ends that existed on the Nexus phones, and it has a very nice fit and finish to the UI and UX. The camera software is stellar, assistant is nice, the app drawer is much more cleverly handled than before, notifications menu and quick toggles are spot-on and well refined, and Google continues to deliver the ability to customize without burying settings or complexities into the system. my recent (albeit limited) experiences tinkering with iPhones has really left me wanting more from the UI. It used to "just work" but the menus and UI (aside from the main screen) i feel to be dated, overly-layered, and too confusing. App-level permissioning continues to be great....oh, and the camera...man, the camera. yes, a lot of it comes in post-processing the raw file (HDR+, for example), but it's undeniably awesome. I've accidentally taken pictures that turned out better than my most care constructs on past phones. Vlad has some things to say about that here. Anyway, i wont keep rambling, and could answer specific questions if you're interested.
tl;dr - get it. it's awesome, hardware is awesome and executed well, software is top-notch, phone is blazingly fast, i get 5hrs SOT easily in a single day usage (could stretch multiple days and still pull 3-4hrs), and camera is as good/better than anything out there.

Thank you for the info above, my number one question is how is battery life. As a business person
syncing email/calendars, numerous calls, youtubing, web browsing, and texting. When I unplug at 6 am will I last until 9 pm or will I have to worry, This is my number one question for ALL.

I personally went with the Pixel over the Pixel XL after using the Nexus 6P and OnePlus 3 for the past 12 months. I wanted something with a smaller size for one handed use. So far, I have not been disappointed in the least bit.

I have my own consulting business and use 3 different emails for contact with various clients and 1 personal email address. 2 of these are exchange and 2 are Google accounts. With roughly 20 emails coming in/out per day, 1-2 client calls per day (each one lasting between 30 and 60 minutes), moderate texting and app usage, I've had absolutely no issues with the battery. I usually take about 20 minutes to charge my phone to full as soon as I get into my home office around 7AM each morning. From there it lasts me throughout the day/night with no issues. When I go to plug the phone in each morning it usually has about 25% - 35% battery remaining.

Should I still get the Nexus 6P (broke my Nexus 6) ?

a few days ago I broke my Nexus 6. I am now about to buy a new phone. The Google Pixel L looks really nice but way to expensive.
The Nexus 6P comes next which costs nearly as much (or even less) than a new Nexus 6 would cost. But is the Nexus 6P still worth it?
Battery life seems to be worse than on the Nexus 6, is this correct?
Camera is better than Nexus 6 but worse than Pixel L and other new phones (samsung/iphone) ?
Performance would be more than enough.
Faster decryption than Nexus 6
Feels better in the hand than the Nexus 6
Anything else I should consider?

I upgraded from the N6 to the 6P about a month ago and I couldn't be happier. Camera is better. Battery life is double what it was on the N6, at least for me it is (I'm not arguing over it). Performance is similar. The one thing that makes it an upgrade for me is that the 6P is easier to use on the go, it's not as wide, really makes a difference.

Im in the same boat, need a phone. Only thing that scares me is all the complaints about the 6p battery starting to degrade after long a year ;-/

I recently "upgraded" from a N6 to a 6P, I'd do it again . Similar performance, camera....Not a huge deal to me. battery life isn't as good as my n6, it seems maybe my used 6p has had a rougher battery life than my n6. It gets me through an average days use but no 5.5-6 hours of SOT.
It feels much better in the hand than the n6, the sRGB mode is a winner in for me, finger print scanner is a nice feature. It's also a nexus, unfortunately the last.
I say do it if you can get a good deal.
I was able to pick up a 64gb for under 300 USD!!

Hm thanka for the input. I am not sure if there are any real alternatives for the same price anyway?

I too manage to get my Nexus 6P for under 300, I got mine for 130 and I have to say, it is well worth in getting.
I also am coming from the Nexus 6 as mine has recently broke last month, a day after Thanksgiving. I ended up cracking the screen whilst having the screenprotector on it and you could tell, there is a difference in using the 6P to the 6. With the 6P, it is less wider and feels good in the hand whereas with the 6 it sorta felt like you were holding a brick. The Gorilla Glass 4 which is used on the 6P feels very strong than to the 6's and the screen resolution is amazing. I think if you are able to find a good price on it, it is well worth the money.

The degrading battery issue mentioned below, is false for me - completely. Yes, I get degrading but this is normal for ANY lithium battery on the market. And I have a estimated capacity of 3,223. This is only 6% degrading over a year and a half. Plus you can get the phone for half the price of google, on swappa and various other sites in mint condition.
Side note: I feel the degrading issue is more of a myth caused by the recent battery drain issues of Nougat, and users probably blamed their device rather than the software.
Otherwise, I love this phone. Would absolutely get it again. Hope you come to a decision that satisfies you!

Every phones section on XDA is going to complain about the battery on every phone. There could be a phone with a 10,000 milla amp battery and there would still be people on XDA going

Oh yea I understand that but I was more so concerned with something just being wrong with the 6p as in a defect that they didn't tell us about just to sale phones

I'm considering going with the 6P over my Axon 7. I'm really missing the big screen, seemless Verizon compatibility and lots of ROMs. I haven't quite decided yet, but I'm lurking in the 6P forums thinking about it... The Axon isn't bad but the dev community pales in comparison to the 6P.

If you are going to use your phone for more that 2 years get pixel XL it's going to pay for it self but if Nexus 6P is still really smooth

Go for it! I was on the same boat as you. Was caught in between oneplus3 and 6p.Was coming from oneplus2. I wanted a pure android exp without rooting so I gave 6p a go. Battery has been good for me.Camera is fantastic,i had friends commended the quality and most of them are using iphones. It never felt an old device.

Lol there is absolutely NO battery issue. There is NO battery issue with Nougat. Everyone here complains that there is a battery issue with nougat just as they did with marshmallow and lollipop and kitkat etc.

I just purchased the N6P to replace my V20. I love it so far. Good battery life and excellent camera.
My only complaint (I'm just waiting for a response on this in the Noob Question thread) is that it's a bit sluggish when using some apps and web browsing. Other that it's a blast to use.

Did you get a new 6P? I returned my Axon and am still looking for something to replace my V10...

Bought a 128gb N6P on eBay a couple days ago and waiting for it to arrive. Just read about the early shutdown issues with batteries that still have a charge. That's my bad for not looking into the phone a little bit more than I did. I too will be replacing a Motorola N6 that I was planning on selling after but maybe I'll wait and see if this affects the phone that I bought.

I'm on 7.0 and not having any issues with my 6P. Excellent battery life (4.5-5 hrs sot) and perfectly stable performance. I had it with me skiing last sunday in 4 degree F weather and it performed flawlessly as well.

I'm on a 7.1.1 ROM and I can use the phone clear down to 1 percent battery. The shutdown bug isn't universal at all. The 6p is easily my favorite phone yet, FWIW.

That's surprising. I've always found the 6P fast and smooth. Did you purchase a new, used or refurbished phone? Are you running stock Android? If so, which build?

The 6P is a bargain now that the Pixel is out but if I had the money I would probably purchase a Pixel instead. There are bugs (random reboots; phone shutdown at 15% battery) that are affecting a small but still significant number of 6P users. If you buy a 6P make sure it has a full warranty.

Is it time to move on?

What is the communities take on the battery and bootloop issue? Is it inevitable that every Nexus 6P will eventually had one of these issues?
My delema is that the LG G6 is on sale for $300, plus a free Google Home at US Cellular. It's the only carrier that gets service at my house. I know the Nexus 6P is by far the more "entertaining" phone, with all the development on it. Unfortunately this deal may be too good to pass up if I'm likely to have issues with the 6P in the future.

Can you post a link to this? I don't see it for 300 bucks anywhere.

That is a really tough call tbh. The screen and camera look great, but I don't have a lot of faith in lg tbh and I would worry about a lack of development, if that is an issue for you.
Nevertheless it looks like a great phone.

Oh. It's after monthly bill credits. So would have to stick with it and service for 30 months... It's basically a contract. You leave early then you pay more than 300.

After reading the forums, people sound really disappointed. I wouldn't do it op

Actually the pricing stays the same no matter what installment you choose. US Cellular also states that early payoff does not incur additional fees, including the day of purchase. Only requirement is that it is activated on a post-paid line at time of purchase.

Just reporting back. I did pick it up. It is straight up $300 plus tax. They put it on an installment plan and you just pay it off right away. Also comes with a Google Home promo from LG and I got a $100 US Cellular giftcard. Still gonna keep the 6P for a month on Fi in case I don't like the LG. Can always sell it.

Let me know what you think after a couple days. It looks great but reviews on the forum made me apprehensive. I'm considering getting a new phone, and it will probably be an s8, though the g6 is a definite contender, and would save me a lot of money if I do decide to get a new one.

So far so good as far as the phone goes. Its really narrow, easy to message on. Going back to the Nexus is difficult ergonomically. The developer landscape is non-existant but it does look like the US Cellular variant probably has an unlocked bootloader. There is already a bounty on TWRP for the TMO variant. Im sure development will pick up once that gets working. Its a popular enough phone.

I've bought my used 6P 3 weeks ago. Battery life was terrible. The only issue. I was having 40-50% of my Nexus 5X life.
After putting a good battery (X-Longer model) in the 6P (last Friday), the phone recovered the original battery life and now I'm having like 25% more battery than my 5X.
So basically I have same battery life I used to have with the Z5 Compact. 4 hours and a full day are guaranteed no matter what you did (gaming....pure chrome browsing of whatever). Maybe 5 hours or 6 if you like to watch videos o too much reading.
I would only upgrade to a Pixel if I wanted a smaller phone. But now that I'm adapting to this phablet...maybe I won't upgrade it before Android P is. released, since it will get O.

It seems like these will all be dead within a couple years but only time will tell for sure. Still, I don't expect mine to last more than a few months once my warranty expires in July.

I think I'm going to try a battery replacement. Accubattery says mine is near full capacity but I still get terrible battery life and bad standby battery drain.

There's no need to change battery if accubattery shows full capacity. It would make no difference at all

Accubattery isn't very precise, and a badly made battery could still drain quicker

Yes but consider that accubattery was calculating my battery as 2000 mAh / 3450 mAh. And this without considering that the old battery was turning off between 10-25%
That's why in the end I've ended​ up with more than 120% increase in battery life with the new battery.

Why you think this? Accubattery is really accurate in my experience. I always used that, you can calculate the capacity manually too. And a defective battery is not going to show you more than it can actually hold so if your battery has an high health it's ok and you don't need to change the battery. Anyway the phone is yours and if you want go ahead and open it but the 6p is really difficult to open and a damage could cost you around 20 bucks for the plastic and glass panel.. And finally you could end up installing a worse battery than the one inside

Should i upgrade?

Okay, so here is the gist of things:
I have a Google Nexus LG.
Bought it back in 2013 or 2014 so I've had it for a while
Here in the EU Samsung is finally offering the VR bundle so I got interested in buying it, but there is only 2-3 months before the new iphone is out too.
My question is, is the samsung galaxy 8 worth it?
How good is the battery life? I'm mainly concerned about that because my phones battery dies out rather quick.

The battery life on my Galaxy S8 is great. Caveat, I deleted apps like Facebook (which came preinstalled) and don't use any battery heavy apps except for Snapchat. However, Samsung has a built-in battery optimizer under the name 'Device Maintenance' which works great. Whenever I close Snapchat, it automatically shuts down the background process so it won't leech battery. I get around 8 hours of SOT, and can leave my phone off the plug for at least 24 hours, if not more when used less frequently. One time I left my phone off the charger for 50 hours or so just because I wasn't using it to the max. Very convenient, because I don't have to charge it overnight all the time.

One might argue the iPhone has good battery life, but that's because its app environment is limited in that everything has to be optimized. Also, the screen is apparently just now coming into the 1080p OLED world... not very promising. From the render, it also looks like the screen is cut out on the top for the speaker and camera (like the Essential Phone) which just looks tacky IMO. Also, if you're considering about the (exuberant) price, the iPhone will likely come out with a similar starting price. The VR bundle is definitely worth it! Apple is nowhere near that level of VR support, as far as I know.

The Google Nexus 5 was my first Google phone. I used to like it a lot. My Google Pixel XL is at it's box waiting for 8.0 Upgrade Platform. My Samsung Galaxy S8+ is a really good Android phone, great battery life. Sorry but I never got a iPhone and never will get one.
