Is there a keyboard shortcut to temporarily turn the physical keyboard on/off and bring up the onscreen keyboard WITHOUT detaching it from the tablet. I'm having a wacky glitch with WPS office (that does NOT have to do with my Force GPU rendering hack...this existed long before I did that unfortunately...I wish it was that easy).
Basically, in the Word program, if the keyboard is attached, I can't drop down any menus for font changes, colour changes, etc... Most things that require a drop down menu simply have no effect when clicking on them. Sheets and Slides DON'T have the same issue. Only Word..which is what is so damn weird about it. If I want to change font in word, I have to detach the keyboard, change the font, and then reattach it.
I tried Polaris Office, and it works fine, except that it breaks lines mid-word when opening it in WPS office on my desktop. I haven't found an office program that does things quite as well as WPS and I can't just use MS Word because MS Word won't open and save to my Google Drive.
It's funny that most of the glitches I've experienced with the Ultratablet, I've shrugged and chalked it up to the risks of being an early adopter. This is the first one that is seriously damaging my calm because it's the very reason I bought the tablet in the first place; to start writing again by unchaining myself from my desktop.
EDITED TO ADD - This is the WPS Word program that I am having issues with and not Microsoft Word. I'm an idiot for forgetting that originally.

Have you tried Office Suite + PDF from the Market? Works well for me on any Android device. Full disclosure I have the PRO version that gives more fonts etc. but the free version might solve your issue.

Nope. No experimental features others than showing the back button on the taskbar. But I see from your screenshot that you are using Microsoft Word. My issue is with WPS Office Word. I would love to use Microsoft Word, but it doesn't sync/save with my Google Drive and I'm way to invested to switch to SkyDrive. Thank you for trying however. I appreciate it greatly.
PS - I totally just realized that nowhere in my original post did I mention that it was WPS Word instead of Microsoft Word. I'm an idiot... my sincere apologies.

Tried Office Suite + PDF. The big advertising banner in the bottom is far too distracting and I've already paid for extra fonts with WPS so not eager to pay another 20 to get rid of the banner.

Just made this as it works best for the x1, bigger letters than the blackstone keyboard, who needs the arrovs when we have the optical joystick
get it here:
here is the new keybord image to fill the screen but still have the larger letter for easy typing, first i made the touch hd layout witout the arrows, but the letters were to small, so this is the best solution so far to still have the large letters for finger friendly typing.
hope this comes to use..

well, the problem with using Raphael's keyboard is that at landscape mode, it doesn't stretch fully and create white space on right/left side of the keyboard.
OTOH, I believe this version will enable word completion and name/address prediction when you text using hardware keyboard, am I right?
does it break the symbol and the ascent key? If it doesn't, I'm inclined to install this over the TouchPal that I'm using.

Just made a hard reset after killing the phone trying to uninstall this thing. Anyone who don't want to waste time restoring your data or to be stuck with an unfunctional AE button, do yourself a favor and don't install this.
Same here, can't uninstall, now I am stuck with a crappy keyboard that doesn't work due to unfinished uninstall. I even tried SKTools and it didn't work. Now I need to find a way to uninstall it.
don't install this software (at least till it has a working uninstaller)
Update: I just did a hard reset for the phone to get rid of this software. Now I am installing everything from the beginning. The guy who did this is not even showing a sign of life to help us out :S.
I like the essence of this keyboard, but it still needs a bit of tweaking. The landscape mode is broken too, though that isn't a big problem for me, as I use the HW keyboard in landscape anyway.
Will this ever be updated, smaberg? (Will send PM for it.)

Among us in the jousts, while women watch
Who wins, who falls; and waste the spiritual strength
Within us, better offered up to Heaven.

I don't know of any drivers for android that would allow you to use 3G, and I don't expect any seeing as Android is made mostly for phones, and USB 3G dongles are made for computers

I notice your list doesn't mention battery life. In that case, isn't 6-10 hours on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus hitting your Holy Grail in a meet-or-exceed sort of way? The thing is pretty damned small and light. 'Course, it costs more, but you also didn't list price. You didn't seem to be too focused on any of the NST's strong points.

Just this morning I somehow managed to turn on the very annoying "loading started, page loaded" voice when opening the browser. I have no idea how I did it. I read many other threads about this and they say turn off talk back or disable all options under accessibility settings. I have done that and it still shouts out the message every time I use the browser. Where else can I look to turn this off?
I have discovered that installing any of many different apps from the playstore can trigger this behavior on Samsung phones. Appears to be no solution but to listen to the voice every time you use the browser or any number of other things that trigger it. Here is a thread that discusses it:
Sorry am not allowed to post links. If you go to Samsung dot developer dot com and search for "Samsung devices and Accessibility Services", maybe you can find the long thread about the issue.

Thanks, but they are both off. The link I wanted to post to the other developer forum explains pretty well what caused my problem I think since I had installed one of those apps. Nobody seems to know how to fix it though.
I had the same issue when installing "AOSP Browser"
Uninstalled it, restarted phone and issue was resolved
Eventually when I am able to post links here I can link to some other forums where this is discussed. Apparently it is a bug in the Samsung software on this phone, the Note 2 and both the S3 and S4. Certain types of apps, like Missed Message for example, monitor things via the accessibility part of the phone and that somehow makes the Samsung software think TalkBack is on even when it is not. Samsung has acknowledged the problem but has not been able to fix it. Uninstalling any apps that use Accessibility Services stops the issue. If you want to use an app like that anyway, then using Chrome instead of the default browser helps although it will still crop up in a few other places. It is sure interesting if you are in a quiet room and suddenly your phone shouts out "loading started, page loaded, loading started, page loaded"
Here is a link that discusses the bug: http://developer.samsung.com/forum/...TLE&searchText=Samsung+devices+and+Accessibil
I had this issue on my Samsung Note 3 with the latest available software update and TalkBack switched off.
In my case, I have a Pebble smartwatch which, for some reason, requires Accessibility settings to send notifications. With Pebble activated, I get the "Loading started" and "Page loaded" voiceovers in the stock Internet browser. With Pebble disabled, the voiceovers stop. So until this is fixed, I have to make a choice between giving up on the Pebble or putting up with annoying voiceovers.
As a temporary fix, I tried downloading another voice which had settings that allowed me to adjust the speed of the voice so that the voiceovers became merely a brief noise. Then I realised that the same voice is used for navigation instructions in Google Maps, making them utterly unintelligible.
Fingers crossed for an update.
As you can see from other forums, this has been a problem with a couple of generations of Galaxies now. Samsung seemed to indicate several months ago that they had fixed it, but that was not the case. Now there seems to be no communication from Samsung on the issue. So I would not hold your breath for a fix. It must not be an easy one.
I started using Chrome instead of the stock browser and at least in Chrome the annoying voice overs do not occur. I also do not get them in my gallery like some people do. Then I cleared the "default" setting in the Application Manager>Internet tab. Then I opened a link in an email and was asked which browser I wanted and I set it to Chrome, Always.
This has made the issue tolerable for me. The only real, complete, solution is not to use any apps that tag in to the Accessibility setting. And to not use the Pebble either, I guess. Not really good solutions at all but boy I sure love this phone anyway!
As Mopar said, you need to turn off Talkback, and the most important that you need to make sure all the language setting must be the same. ie all English, all spanish, all chinese etc.

If you go under 'default language' for the keyboard settings you'll find your installed keyboards there. However there are problems due to the 3rd party keyboards not resizing to adjust for the menu bar.

Guys anyone know how to hack, for example, Google Keyboard onto the HDXs? Theyre downloadable, but without selection options i cant find how to set the keyboard to use...
And amazons swifkey totally blows - inaccurate, predicts badly, has a crappy feel in landscape.
There must be some other way no?

I've used several like swift key and thumb via play store with no issues. Most are adjustable in settings. Works great for me. I prefer thumb and split keyboard.
Thanks guys I've worked it out... But what I get with Google keyboard isn't quite right because of the sidebar lol:
Gmd auto hide

Like one of the previous posts mentioned if you go to the play store and find the app gmd auto hide soft keys it will solve the problem. It is paid to remove a visible indicator of the soft keys Btw.

I did... But I guess what we need is to replace the fireos navbar totally, cause even with autohide some of the keyboard is missing when using the replacement... And its unintuitive to boot for me at least, someone used to aosp navigation.

I'm confused, I don't have anything missing on my keyboard (swiftkey). Also with gmd I've disabled the kindle nav bar, I never even see it anymore. The keys are aosp just that you need to swipe up at access them much like the 'immersion mode' in some of the newer roms.

Yeah... but the swipe up isnt intuitive for me, i wish it could just be there all the time and that it took up the alloted space rather than overlaying... also i find that the nav button positions keep changing by a few millimeters.
I've just been reading about all the "helpful" things the Bixby assistant will do. Perhaps I'm just an old fuddy-duddy, but I'd pay extra to have Bixby bound, gagged, and thrown in a closet somewhere. Does anyone find anything in the descriptions appealing? It reminds me of the smartphone embodiment of Microsoft Office "Clippy". Or perhaps the Gooseberry personal assistants Sam Vimes had running battles with in the Discworld novels .
Nope, don't want Bixby, Cortana, Siri, any of those cloud based assistants. If anything, the fact that Bixby takes up resources on the S8 is a decent sized strike against the S8 for me.
Not really! Very low priority...
There will be plenty of people that do want it. It'll be handy for the disabled and great when it's holstered in the car. I'm pretty sure it'll be optional and if it isn't, there will be ways to shut it down. Always nice to have new features you can use if desired. If they didn't push new tech or software features then the evolution of phones would come to an end and they would all be the same.
Samsung can build great hardware, but when it comes to software, it sucks... So: no.
Nope, none of the voice assistants are really that big of a deal. I hope we can remap that button to do something else. Would love it to be a dedicated camera button or maybe flash light button

Haha, I'm not sure which comparison I prefer
I really don't care for voice assistants so I doubt I'll use Bixby, even though it has the best name of them all lol
Do you think it can be turned off or button swapped for something else? Can swipe left from home to see bixby can be turned off?
No. There are enough cloud based "assistants" which do nothing but a glorified search for content, or convert text to speech. Gimmicks being sold as AI.
Besides, google assistant does more than this can anyhow, and is included.
i don't use these, no google now, no bixby, no assistant, no cortana, no s-voice....i prefer to do it myself instead of talking to the phone and people think i am weird...hehehe
I want it!
I really want to have the bixby app from S8 to my phone. Anyway I have an galaxy s4 i9505

If it can be programmed to start every response with "bingley bong beep" and address you as "insert name here" then it might have some amusement value.
Otherwise it will be worth rooting just to reprogramme the button to do something useful.
Absolutely not. The only voice-related app I even remotely use is Google Now, and that's specifically because it's less AI-like than Siri or Google Assistant.
I would actually want bixby IF... IF... it was always on always listening, even when screen off and on battery power... and you could just speak the command, ie. "make the screen dimmer" and it just does it. And!, if bixby was open for all apps ESPECIALLY Automagic!, and Tasker
Then i'd make that bixby button a fire extinguisher
I want it. I have a bunch of IoT stuff including over 50 Hue light bulbs. Using Samsung Connect and Bixby within my phone (vs. a separate app or individual widgets) to control my Samsung SmartThings Hub sounds a lot simpler and more integrated than using Alexa on my Echo for voice stuff and a combination of apps for touch. It all depends on how Bixby's executed which remains to be seen.

I don't know about others but I rarely use voice control on my devices (except the Echo) because usually it's easier just to type (or on a Note device, write). With voice driven devices you have to know their limitations and ask them limited structured queries. The selling point of Bixby is that it's context aware so you can go between voice commands and typing at will. That and it can reply to less structured queries and learn from what it processes. Sounds like a great goal but I'm guessing Bixby will be a work in progress.
The big advantage the financial analysts say Samsung has with Bixby over Amazon, Google, and Apple is the gazillion IoT-capable devices (TVs, microwaves, washers, dryers, SmartThings) they sell annually. All those things I expect will support Bixby starting with this year's models. That's a huge piece of leverage that others who sell but not build connected devices will never have. Kind of like Apple/Google depending on car makers to support Android Auto and Car Play vs. Samsung building both the car and the connectivity integration.
This phone will still come with Google voice also. If you don't like Bixby you dont have to use it. If the S8 is ever rooted you'll also have the option to freeze it making it disappear. And, who knows you may even come to like it or find it tolerable. :good:
