[Q] MicroSDHC, video rec., ext. hard drive, Sniffer?

Hi. I have some questions and I will be very happy if I learn the answers
Please help me to find out
1. Does Adam support 32GB MicroSDHC card?
2. What is the resolution and fps of video recording of Adam?
3. Can we plug 1TB hard drive to it?
4. Can we disable the ambient light sensor if we want?
5. Sniffer shows 1 USB drive even a USB drive doesn’t plugged. However, we have 2 USB port. What if we plug 2 USB flash drive at a time, will it work? Will Sniffer shows both of them?
6. Can leaves work in the portrait mode?

Can anybody at least give me an answer for this question :

I want to buy "Lexar High Speed MicroSDHC 32 GB Class 10" but I'm not sure will it work with Adam or not.

SDHC supports card up to 32 GB ... why Adam shouldn't ? I should reply during February ... because my adam should have arrive.

Don't really have any clear information but in this post on blog Rohan speaks about methode to drain power (Record HD Video and stream it over the Wi-fi networks) For me HD Video means 1080p

Don't really have any clue ... Rohan speaks about access on sniffer with usb pen up to 128 Gb ... But be careful that Android don't seem to have access to NTFS File System, android can access FAT32 File system or Linux Standard FS (Ext 2 to 4).

I think that you sniffer groups disk by type. Android is an LINUX Distribution.
Then you should have USB 1 / USB 2 / USB 3 (there's 3 ports 2 USB Standard and 1 Mini Usb)

Don't have any clue on it, but if there's no clue it's maybe that leaves only work in Landscape mode as Sense for HTC doesn't work on landscape mode.

I dont think it supports 1tb external hdd as of yet they said its because android has a limit on its fat 32 size i think its about 120 gig or something. But said in an interview that they were looking to extend this.

For 1TB hard drive, thats very bad I use FAT32 for my macbook, and it is 320GB. I really didn't understand why it doesn't support that, shouldn't be because of FAT32.
Also for microSD, I think you are right Gkar3, I will buy Lexar 32GB now. It would be very ridiculus, if Adam doesn't support 32GB micro SD.

The Mini USB is a HOST port. Meaning that you plug in a standard size USB side of a cable to your computer and the mini side into your Adam... this will allow you to mount the internal storage from your Adam as a R/W drive on your computer. (it essentially makes your Adam's internal memory act like a 'usb thumb drive')

You can run FAT32 on 1TB drives, but I have not heard of an Android limit on FAT32 before. Windows XP does not support formatting of external drives to FAT32 unless they are smaller than 32GB. This is a superficial limit imposed by Microsoft and there are a number of tools that will allow you to format large external drives to FAT32.
Another thing to note is that just because the base Android system did not support NTFS out of the box doesn't mean some of the XDA devs won't be able to able to add NTFS support into a custom kernel. We'll have to wait until some of the XDA devs get their hands on the NotionInk Adam before we can see what features we can add.
Also, FAT32 has a filesize limit of 4GB... so if you are trying to keep some large, HD movies on the external HDD for playback on your Adam you may want to consider another filesystem (other than FAT32).

I'll try to plug a large FAT32 drive into my ViewSonic G-Tablet tonight and see how it works. It's running the nVidia Tegra2 chip so it should at least be similar.

For me it's Linux Kernel that rules Android then if you use FAT32 then you can create file system from 2 to 8 Tb

Wow, thanks for the informations. That 4GB limit is the thing that I'm always suffering about.
You are right, we should wait for XDA devs. to get their hands on the Notion Ink Adam. Hope this device will be popular in XDA-devs.
I will hopefully wait for your updates about FAT32 driver.

USB Hard Drive connection

Has anyonebeen able to connect successfully an hard drive to TP?
I've tried by all manners without success,even with the docking ... no luck.
Would thisbe possible if we root TP?

for your usb drive to be mounted by the thinkpad, it has to be formatted in fat32. not fat or ntfs.
Ive got 2 hard drives (1terabyte and 500GB) with loads of data on them and are both formatted ntfs. I connected them to my thinkpad, they powered up but did not mount. I wasn't ready to reformat my hard drives with data on them so i didn't try.
However, I think I've got a 2GB usb stick lying around somewhere . I'll format it to fat32 and post some feedback here later.
oh and before trying, go to settings-->storage and enable usb storage devices. otherwise no device would mount on the tablet. even when formatted properly

as darkhandsome18 mentioned, yes but the harddrive has to be formatted in Fat32. Windows XP, Vista, and 7 don't allow you to format harddrives over 32GB within windows. However, you can use a thirdparty utility to format drives that are over 32GB in size to Fat32.
i personally use Fat32formatter (its commandline based) to do this w/my drives.

i did verify that my 1TB external usb harddrive did mount on the TPT, i have not tried to run any videos or music from it though.

i have tried 4 ext HDD (ntfs and fat32), and all of them is not working.... (except for draining my battery for powering the HDD.. )
but for usb flash drive, that is a different matter, is it easily recognized by my TPT..
there is 1 unique problem that occurred to me, while trying to copy files from/into my TPT, there's a notification that file copy is successful, but when i check the file, it's size is 0 bytes..
this has happened to me 3-4 times, unfortunately, i dont know where's the "glitch" is coming from, as i can't replicate the problem anymore (i haven't got any update at all)

Normally when I use playback from hdd I use my supercharger power which connects throught the docking port or else the TPT just gets sucked dry of power as the hdd draws almost 500mA's.

If your external drive is formatted at fat32 and has its own power source, you will have success using it with the TPT. But if you are depending on the tablet's USB port to supply enough power to spin the disks in the external hard drive, you will get varying results, depending on the power requirements for your external drive. USB flash drives work fine because they have no moving parts and a low power requirement. As zeb crs stated, you see a huge power drain on your tablet when trying to use an external hard drive without its own power source.

How to run Fire TV apps from an External USB Drive

After trying a whole bunch of methods, here is the best way I've found to free up internal storage by moving apps to an external drive.
Complete step-by-step Guide with screenshots

Yes, you can move XBMC's data with this method. But since XBMC is so customizable, modifying advancedsettings.xml like JJ-KwiK suggests is a better option.

Hi Guys
Just need some input w.r.t. flash drives and external drives.
What is the biggest size flash drive or external drive we can use on the AFTV?
Fat32 or NTFS file system?
Do you need a powered multi usb device to make the external drive work?
Must you use a powered external drive to make it work in the fire tv?
Hope someone can clear it up.
I connected a non powered multi usb device on the fire tv. the Rii keyboard with bluetooth usb and my 4gb flash both worked on it, but my 1.5TB 2.5" does not want to pick it up.

I'm using a 32GB USB Flash Drive and it works. It's NTFS. Spinning disk must be powered externally for both 2.5" or 3.5".
External SSD might work unpowered....I don't have a drive to test this theory.

I have two Toshiba 5400 RPM Canvio that are unpowered 2.5 and work fine, and a Seagate 500MB 2.5 in a cheapie external USB case that works fine as well.

Yeah I don't understand I've just found my Verbatim USB 3 external 2.5" works but my transcend external 2.5" doesn't. Both are the same size and both are NTFS. I checked and they both work on my PC. Guess it's luck of the draw for 2.5". I can't get an external 3.5" to work...Anyone else?

3.5 inch should be 12V so they would need an external power supply. As far as not seeing a powered 3.5 it could be one of a hundred different issues.

My 2TB 3.5" external works with a 12v power.

External Harddrive 3TB, 3.5" formatted as NTFS works fine for me.
Different sorts of USB stick's up to 32MB formatted as fat32 or NTFS gave me no trouble either.

Images gone after moving Thumbernails to USB stick
Hello,
I 'moved' the Thumbernails folder, using the advancedsettings.xml method. After a new scan run I see all the movie-descriptions, but I do no longer, see any images. They are just not shown..
Any idea, whats going wrong ? I'm really new to XBMC

After the scan, I deleted the whole content in Andtroid/.../userdata/Thumbernails. The folder itself is still there.
(6GB usb stick/NTFS)
edit2: solution found!
xbmc: System->File Manager->Profile directory->Database delete the Textures13.db and restart the xbmc.
All thumbnails are displayed again!

I tried this method with NFSMW which is approx 4gb after updating and it copied everything over the my usb BUT when i mount it the game says my usb storage device has no room for an update -_- (even though the directory copied is the most up to date version and capacity is 16gb) also, this method does nothing to free up space on the FTV. I had to go in manually to my android/data folder and remove the directory to free up space myself. Might want to add that to the description.

You are mistaken or did something wrong. FolderMount moves the files AND deletes the originals. If the files are set as "mounted" in FolderMount, it will appear as if they are still on the Fire TV. Meaning, if you "ls" the original directory in /sdcard/, you will see all the original files. However, the files are not actually on the Fire TV. To verify this for yourself, go to Settings > About to see your available free space before and after following my directions. You will see your free space increase.

With root and StickMount both USB drives and Thumbdrives work great

getting bad transfer speeds on 5Ghz with my note 4

my link rate on the phone is 525Mbit/s and my computer is at 1Gbit/s and for some reason im transferring from my computer to my phones Memory card which is a sandisk 128gb and im only getting around 1-3 MB/s write speed, i don't get it shouldn't the sd card be rated for higher? or is it the chip inside my note 4 that bottlenecks the sd card? im using Es media to transfer the files. And no it's not small files it was around 800MB

Write speed to your SD card (external storage) from your pc to your device is slower than transferring the file directly from your pc to your devices' internal storage.

I'm not quite sure about that. But I think one of the reasons is the SD card itself. Try to use a microSD adapter, plug it in your PC and transfer a file to it. Is it a lot faster that way?

Just ordered my shield and accessories have a few questions. PLEASE HELP!

So I just ordered my shield, remote, and micro sd. I'm really curious as to if I made a good combination of hardware. I picked up the 16gb version, nvidia remote, and the new fastest sandisk Mico sd. Here's my questions.
-I got the brand new sandisk uhs-ii u3 micro sd, I know the bus speed for micro SD on the shield is only rated uhs-1. Can I format it as adoptable storage using the USB 3.0 adapter so I can get the high speed the card is rated for or will I have to use the micro SD slot for adoptable storage and have my card speed throttled to the slower r/w bus speed. If this is the case should I have opted for a uhs-1 card for half the price
-I also have a USB 3.0 4TB external hard drive full of movies that I currently plug into my LG TV. It is formatted NTFS, will I be able to plug it into my shield and use it as my new media player since the one on my TV is kinda clunky. Can I read and write to NTFS on my shield?
- I also have an Samsung 840pro 250GB SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure which is formatted exfat. Could this drive be used as adoptable storage via USB 3.0? Pretty much the same as question 1. Can adoptable storage be configured threw USB instead of micro SD, if this is the case do I really need the Micro SD card?
- Will a USB 3.0 hub work on the shield so I can plug in a dongle for a wireless keyboard, my 4TB drive, my SSD, and Micro SD in 3.0 adapter?

Can anyone help with some of these questions? I canceled the 16gb version and opted for the pro. I also canceled the sandisk micro sd. Can I use my Samsung ssd in usb 3.0 enclosure as adoptable storage? Would I benefit any from it as far as load times on games or should I just install to internal 500gb drive? What are the advantages of a custom rom over rooted stock rom. With stock rooted rom can I install all the same apps from Google play or will I have more options with a custom rom? Also I see custom roms of full android 6.0 without nvidia skin overlay. Are there any real benefits this and will I lose any functionality? Any help is appreciated, responses please! I get my shield Tuesday.

Yeah ended up swapping for 16gb again and gonna use my Samsung ssd adopted. Found the answers to most questions just trying to decide rather to flash full android m or just root factory firmware.

Why not the 500gb with adoptable though. Isn't it a hybrid drive or just a regular 5400rpm hdd

I think the drive is a Hybrid. Pretty good chance that NVIDIA just used a USB 3.0 to SATA chip to service that 500gb drive. So I see no reason why you couldn't have just done it yourself.
How do you know the device did not come with the remote already? I purchased the 16gb and decided I did not want the remote so I didn't buy it, yet surprisingly it was in the retail box anyway.

As far as I know it's just the shield and the controller in the box according to the Amazon description and pictures. They do sell a bundle that has the remote included but I'm pretty confident mine has no remote. You cannot add, change, or remove storage internally on the shield nvidia made sure of that.

It all comes down to what you want to use the Shield for. If your installed games are not going to exceed those 16GB of flash (which of course will be less) I see no reason to get the Pro. Another valid point is the price difference: for the 100€ difference, I could get a 2-4 TB HDD.

Yeah I was talking about getting a bigger usb 3.0 drive and using one of the included usb 3.0 ports. That's actually why they are there.

Gotcha I plan on it, I have a 256gb ssd in enclosure I want to use as adopted storage and a 4tb wd external for media storage

Personally speaking, for my family anyway I just add drives to the home server, or retire them for bigger ones. Building a Windows home server 5 years ago was the best thing I ever did for media consumption. Sadly I only have 3 SATA ports so I am limited to the amount of drives I can add

One thing I forgot to mention: adding USB devices through a USB port will limit the speed and latency at which they are accessed.

OK how would you guys setup this is what I now have ordered and has already shipped so no going back. Idc if I use adoptable storage or not unless it benefits me. My usage will be downloading large torrent files and copying them to 4tb drive using shield as player, lots of large file gaming, kodi, Internet browsing and that's about it. Maybe hangouts

Whatever I already have:
Samsung 256gb ssd
4tb wd my book
500gb hdd out of ps4

I wouldn't worry about adaptable storage. keep your external drives mounted as removable storage and have your apps and games all installed on your internal drive, keep the external drives just for media. I can't see you filling up 500gb with android apps and games any time soon.

Edit: I think I've got it figured out just gonna root stock rom and sideload whatever I can't get directly through playstore.
