I am on update channel retgb (UK) and have just received the first OTA update for this device. As I have unlocked my bootloader, install TWRP, installed Vanche's Modified Boot Kernel + wlan_custom.zip + magisk do I need to do anything special before applying the OTA update. (I followed the guide by Awesomeslayerg up to installing SuperSU)
I have looked around XDA but I do not know which stock rom I need to flash and then how to apply the OTA update. As I have magisk I don't think my system partition has been modified but because of the wlan_custom file and custom boot kernel I think the boot partition has been meaning from what I understand I can't install the update.
Any pointers would be appreciated.
I did grab the OTA update drive.google .com/open?id=0B0o6IYW5dPwHcExfSXVvMWVCWU0 (remove space between google and .com if thats is any help
I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR DEVICE BRICKS, SD CARD DAMAGES OR NUCLEAR WAR STARTS.
Rooting method described below will work on Oreo-running devices ONLY (confirmed on build OPN27.76-12-22 and on OPNS27.76-12-22-9).
Please follow all steps very carefully and make sure you downloaded correct versions of all .zip files mentioned in my instruction!
ROOT (SafetyNet test will PASS!)
1. Download all files listed below:
- twrp-3.2.3-0-addison.img (CLICK)
- Magisk-v17.1.zip or newer if availabe (CLICK)
- f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip (CLICK)
2. Flash TWRP using Fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.3-0-addison.img
3. Flash Magisk-v17.1.zip (or newer if available).
4. Go to TWRP/Settings and open Terminal.
5. Run both of following commands:
Code:
echo KEEPVERITY=true>>/data/.magisk
echo KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=true>>/data/.magisk
6. Flash f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip
7. Reboot (it is crucial in case of installing Xposed afterwards).
8. Optional but recommended: update your Magisk Manager to the latest version (CLICK).
9. Open Magisk -> Modules and update f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround module to the newest version (can be done only via Magisk Manager only if new version of f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround module is available).
10. Enjoy rooted Oreo.
UPDATE 03.10.2018
If you flashed everything as described in OP and noticed that you got stuck in boot, go to TWRP again and:
1. Uninstall Magisk using latest Magisk uninstaller.
2. Flash Magisk 17.1.zip AGAIN (yes.).
3. Flash f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip
4. Enjoy rooted phone.
PS. I do not know why device does not start after first flashing to be honest, but these four steps above are confirmed by several users (and by me).
UPDATE 03.10.2018
XPOSED (be careful: Xposed for Oreo is still in BETA distribution and flashing it will break your SafetyNet!)
1. Open Magisk Manager -> Downloads.
2. Download Xposed Installer (the one from the screen below):
https://image.ibb.co/byLUuK/Xposed_Framework.png
3. Let Magisk install it.
4. Reboot.
5. Open Xposed Installer (you will see orange exclamation mark, don't worry).
6. Reboot once again.
7. Voila.
Hit THANKS if I helped!

@rafikowy ah, so basically the problem was with dm-verity and forced encryption? That makes sense. So it would basically also work if you'd not extract the boot.img from the OTA zip and mod it with Magisk manager with both enabled and flash that (might be easier than flashing normal Magisk and then make the changes), so you'd basically just flash the img and the module zip in TWRP.
Well, if no bigger bugs appear I might try the Oreo OTA and root tomorrow. Don't think it will be here on its own till then, even if it's already the official rollout (Indian and brasilian users seem to get it officially)
First magisk manager did not want to open, but a reboot solved. thanks
So, Lenovorola is still "undecided" in regards to patching F2FS.
I wonder why...
Where can I find the firmware or OTA to update Oreo on my 1635-02 with Android 7.1.1 Patch December? Is possible back to Stock Oreo or Nougat?

Only a Soak test is available, the link is in the thread in the ROM section. And yes, it doesn't seem to update your bootloader, it was already successfully testet to go back to 7.1.1

not work - moto z play - oreo soak
Unfortunately it does not work. : (TWRP prompts for a PIN to decrypt data.) How to select cancel and install Magisk on installation f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround-2018.1.31.zip displays an error that does not detect magisk or is incompatible. How do I format the date everything is installed but the phone does not turn on... Any idea?
Sorry but, if verity is enabled, that means you are unable to modify /system files?

You can go back, problem is you will lose IMEI by going back to Nougat.

I gone back to 7.1.1 Nov patch and everything is OK with my IMEI. Just flash 7.1.1 Plus ROM with TWRP. One issue what I have - In can't mount OEM partition in TWRP.
Could someone provide a TWRP backup of the 8.0 Soak? I've modified the system partition and this method stoped working. All the 8.1 roms have a so bugged camera, I don't wanna go back to them

Nope. It's impossible for now. You can`t go back to full stock, because you'll lose your IMEI with flashing full 7.1.1 FW with RSD or fastboot.

I have ze520kl updated to oreo via ota update. Then I unlocked bootloader with official asus app.Now I want to know how to install Magisk without Twrp recovery. And what about future updates of fw? How to install it on my phone when I will have unlocked bootloader with official app, stock recovery and rooted with Magisk?

In order to root your device, you need to flash TWRP .
Future ASUS firmware will be posted on ASUS website & you need to install the new update via STOCK RECOVERY

You need stock bootloader to install OTA updates [RECOMMENDED]
(I found a thread to flash OTA's using TWRP by flashing no-verity but I am not sure that it will work on TWRP 3.2.1)
I am not really sure about the Magisk Manager (I'm still new to Magisk)

When the new update released just flash it via twrp and reflash magisk, anything will okay. And the option patch boot.img it really not work since the oreo rom, you will get error while patching boot and installing module magisk.
Which unlock tool did you use?
The nougat one unlocked oreo too? Great!!!!
This weekend, I try Oreo stock with Magisk, and Titanium Backup can't restore apps+data. I thinking Magisk issue and I return to LOS14 because I need my phone with my data.

I used tool for nougat from Asus website. So what is The best way for root this phone and make future updates?
I would like to finally know how it is with these updates. Unlocked the bootloader with the official application I would like to be able to upload updates. If I download TWRP and root my phone, I will be able to upload updates from Asus (the whole software file). Will the phone detect this file and update the system as it used to do? Will I have to upload it via TWRP? If by TWRP is how to do it step by step? dm-verity file needed? Is it possible to root my phone without uploading TWRP? Patching the boot.img oreo file with the Magisk manager does not work. Or give up magisk and upload supersu? Could anyone write instructions on how to proceed to root and upload system updates as they will be released by the manufacturer in the future? There are no step by step solution on this forum that can help me finally understand my problem and doubts

As you officially unlocked the BL, you will not get the ota notification in the future but you can download the full firmware zip from asus website and flash it normally ( you should be on the full stock recovery and boot to flash the ota or the firmware zip and remove magisk before flashing then re-flash it again after the update ). When you rooted your phone and don't have the stock recovery and boot images needed for flashing the updates, you can flash the RAW firmware and you will getback to full stock again without losing your data.

if you want to use stock recovery, you don't need magisk or the no-verity file. If you want to use twrp, because it works for the 100th time, you will need either.
Ktl20, you will not brick your phone trying either method, so why don't you experiment and find out for yourself, that's the best way to learn.

Hi guys,
I have gone thru the forum to install Magisk systemless root in S7 Edge running 8.0 but have few questions.
1. Is TWRP mandatory to install Magisk for systemless root?
2. If above point is yes, then will the device be eligible for OTA even with TWRP recovery?
3. Please provide steps to install Magisk systemless root in S7 Edge running 8.0 latest October patch
Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your time and response. There is something called systemless root which will hide the root from the system and also allows official OTA updates.

From what I know, when you download an OTA and prompt your device to install it, your Android system performs a series of checksums to ensure that your /system, /boot, /recovery, and /vendor (or /OEM) partitions are unmodified from their original stock configuration.
The benefit of Magisk is that it does not modify the system partition, but while installing Magisk, the first thing it does is patch boot image. So you might have to restore the original boot image for the OTA to work.
Also, the OTA is designed to be installed via the stock recovery which has been overwritten with TWRP. So, I think u will face a problem there too.
I'm not saying that it's impossible to get an OTA update. It just might not be as easy as u r used to.

Got your point. Thank you. I read that Magisk can be installed without root or even custom recovery.
The below is taken from the official Magisk thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
How to download or extract the stock boot image file from my official ROM?
"Via Magisk Manager:
This method does not need root, and also does not require a custom recovery.
However, you MUST have a stock boot image dump beforehand, and you also have to be able to flash the patched boot image, either through fastboot/download mode or ODIN
Install the latest Magisk Manager
If you're planning to flash the patched boot image through ODIN, go to Settings > Update Settings > Patched Boot Output Format, and select .img.tar. For normal users leave it as the default .img
Press Install > Install > Patch Boot Image File, and select your stock boot image file
Magisk Manager will now patch your boot image, and store it in [Internal Storage]/Download/patched_boot.img[.tar]
Copy the patched boot image to your PC. If you can't find it via MTP, you can pull the file with ADB:
adb pull /sdcard/Download/patched_boot.img[.tar]
Flash the patched boot image to your device and reboot. Here is the command if using fastboot:
fastboot flash boot /path/to/patched_boot.img"
Hello,
I just updated my Oneplus 8 Pro to the latest update and would like to root the device again. However, I do not know where I can download a stock image file or how to generate one... Is someone out there that can advise me on how to get my hands this or how to do this?
Thank you!
You dont need to patch boot images anymore. just fastboot boot to TWRP and flash the magisk zip
Thank you for clarifying! :good:
