A5 (2016) Marshmallow SPlanner Question - Galaxy A3, A5, A7, A8, A9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I received my Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) a few weeks ago. It came with a ROM for Turkey/Middle East.
One thing I'm looking to do is replace the S Planner that came with it. It has an Islamic calendar with Ramadan dates highlighted and there is no option to remove this or turn this feature off.
So my plan has been to find a different stock ROM, extract S Planner from that, and flash it over the one I have. Are there any problems I should foresee? This is my first phone upgrade in 3 years, so I haven't kept up with any changes in ROM customization techniques. Which method is best for making my own flashable zip? Thanks for anyone who can offer suggestions!

Wow, not even one response. What a useless subforum...
Managed to figure it out on my own. Turns out there is a setting in system/csc/feature.xml
Find the value:
<CsCFeature_Calendar_LabelLocalHolidayDisplay>ARABIC<CsCFeature_Calendar_LabelLocalHolidayDisplay>
Change ARABIC to, well, I'm not sure what values are possible. I'm in Japan, so I changed it to JAPAN, and now the Japanese holidays are highlighted on my SPlanner Calendar. No more Ramadan! Play around with it. Have fun!

Will you explain me please step by step how to go to the system where changes should be?

[Q] SAMSUNG = Nightmare

Before anybody starts to bash me for NOT SEARCHING, Well, I did, I have been doing nothing in the past 3 days except for SEARCHING, here at XDA, and over our friend Google.
Simple things in life that I DON"T KNOW "WHY" I can't do: Its all regarding my Galaxy Tab:
1. SYNC Application that REALLY WORKS ?????
Cannot find Literally ANY that could connect to my Tab, Tried Kies 1.5.3 & 2.0 , (YOUR PHONE IS NOT SUPPORTED)
Tried SAMSUNG New PC STUDIO - TOTAL Failure!
2. No Descent BACKUP APPLICATION? OMG
I remember very well that my HTC Touch HD / HD2 came with a Full version of Sprite Backup, Nothing for Samsung? Do I have to fiddle around trying 30+ to backup (ALL PROGRAMS & DATA)?????????
3. WHERE THE HELL IS THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE THAT HAS FIRMWARE UPGRADES AND DOWNLOADS?
Its not a NOKIA you know, It's a Tablet that is using a NOT-Fully-Optimized-For-Tablets Froyo version. and its an OPEN SOURCE for God's sake, OPEN HOW???
Lots of official Fixes should be easily accessible, along with ROM and RADIO Upgrades, Just like what I'm used to with HTC Devices since 8 years
Where is SAMSUNG SUPPORT???????????????????????????
I just have the Silly User Guide and that's about it, what the hell have they been thinking????????????
have they dumped the device, and became fully DEPENDABLE on XDA-Dev?
4. After Restoring Factory settings, I install very limitted amount of Appz, all legal and free, then restore my Contacts using one application, then Restore my SMS using another Application, then restore my Bookmarks with a third application (Damn it) I then lose the ringtone.
It simply does not RING nor VIBRATE when someone calls me.
Please don't tell me to TRY Titanium Backup!!!!!!!!!!
Do I have to go through an infinite list of CRAP, in COLORS, to BACKUP my DATA????????????????????????????????
I'm Terribly sorry to come RANT in here, its my only WAY to Exhaust my ANGER
What astonishes me here at XDA too, that there is no section for Guides, Tips, just some FM versions, and lots of talk about UNLOCKING the SGT, am I blind to that extent?

I know that the uprades as far as firmaware should come from your provider just as it does with your phone. Just like with the HD2, they release a firmware update to the providers, then the providers release it after they tweak it.
What seems to be wrong with the firmware that is on the tab? I have had my tab a few month and have had ZERO issues with it. I rooted it, and thats all I needed.
As far as syncing your data, you dont want to use titanium backup that does everything, so I am not sure what your asking for.
Dear Willy
If you want real help, please, tell us what is your vision of ideal backup and sync.
I don't see you using Google for that.
I have switched from iPhone in part because I didn't want iTunes and computer every time I wanted to reload data. With Google I am in sync with my online data after logging on Gmail.
It is possible that it does not work as well outside the US but for that purpose Samsung provides Kies software for Windows. Check this link: http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/main/supportMain.do
I did not use it because don't see useful for me but it is exactly a replacement for online sync and backup.
Hope this will help
Thank you dubie76, Now I have some understandings
Thank you too Adapt0r, you are totally correct regarding iTunes and their Lock-Down policy, let alone the very tight platform.
But Still, TB is Okay, but #1 its a PAID App, #2 its really complicated to go through lots of options in various color-codes to get the job done.
I was thinking that there would be an Application that has (Backup/Restore) 2 buttons to do what you need, as simple as that.
and although the SGT is being released in the US to carrier, they also release it in some other countries w/o a Carrier nor a Contract, in such case, SAMSUNG should be providing the Support for it, no body else.
Regarding PC Sync, I just need it to upgrade my FW (the official way) w/o hacks and boot-loader modes, I did some studies regarding my current FW, and its 3 month old, I demand an upgrade to make my usage easier, not to mention the bug fixes.
Every first-release FW/ROM has its flaws, that it get sorted out through UPDATES, got my point?
one more time I would like to thank you for the positive and friendly attitude, I really appreciate that

TB will backup and restore everything with one click. Its the batch operation. Yes the pro version is paid. If you really want it, I can PM it to you, but you have blocked PMs. I have been messing with hybrid roms and builds for a long time and I recommend you dont mess with tablet roms yet.
In your list of complains you can add: the worst support for Microsoft Exchange ever seen
The Tab Software is a joke... I can't believe I have read in several articles it was much better than many other Android devices. I don't want to know how bad others are....
@dubie76:
PM is now Okay, I guess it has been jacked up after upgrading the Forum.
thx dear

What do you want to backup exactly? (Other than Descent which doesn't have an Android port that I'm aware of).
Kies should work fine, if it's not working then you may have the SGT in debug mode or something.
Kies _is_ the "official website" for firmware updates.
I've never owned a phone that will backup _everything_ for later restoration after a factory reset in an easy fashion. An iPhone does a reasonable job of it I guess.
@dubie76:
Words of Thanking can't do you justice, Truely appreciate it.
KIES, for Some reason won't connect to my SGT, and BTW, if USB Debugging mode is enabled, you will get a prompt on the tab saying that you have to Disable it if you want to connect your SGT to your PC.
The weird thing is, some plp. say that we should choose UPGRADE, from the list that pops up when connecting the SGT to a PC/Notebook. Well, I only have KIES / MASS STORAGE / MEDIA PLAYER.
Last question:
If I bought my SGT from KUWAIT (Middle East), do I have to use a KIES version that is Downloaded off Kuwait region (through SAMSUNG Website)? if so, then that's absurd, if Not, then what should I do?
KIES will be used only to UPGRADE the FW, not for backup or Appz installations or anything else.
thx again for all the help, its so comforting to Ask and be Answered, I Love you XDA People.
Will
I have the same predicament. After installing the Kies, it went well then suddenly it froze. I reinstalled it and updated the driver, still cannot sync. The apps just stayed in "connecting" mode and cannot seem to recognize the gtb. I'm hoping for another alternative. It seems this Kies thing is a waste of my time.
The Samsung website specifically says that Kies will not work in certain territories.
Google search for samsung galaxy tab FAQs and you will find a link that contains all sorts of responses from Samsung, official ones, regarding the issues people seem to be having on this thread.

[Q] Third Party Location Change Applications

Hello. I apologize for posting what must be a very common question, but as someone who has no experience with rooting phones, I'm uncertain about the answers.
I bought a Hong Kong Galaxy S4. Models from this country usually have Japanese language support avaliable however this model (the Octa Core variant) doesn't. This creates problems for me as I live in Japan and thus need the various settings to sync up, everything from some websites to the Yen symbol not appearing on the second layer of SwiftKey.
As the S4 has 4.2 with its more advanced security, it is impossible to use a third party region changing application without superuser privileges.
Does anyone know how I might go about doing this in the simplest of ways possible? Morelocale2 makes reference to PM access/the ADB shell which as I understand it, requires the Android SDK. In the event that I could use this method, would I still need to root the phone?
If anyone could help I would be greatly appreciative. It's more than a little bit frustrating to find that the $950 spent on this phone was not at all what I wanted...

[Q] Change package name to SPlannerAppWidget

Hi! I have a Galaxy S4 and I use S-Voice to create Tasks.
Unfortunately on the S4 there is no Task Widget like on other Samsung devices.
I found and apk from another Galaxy (I think the Note 2) that have this widget and I tried to replace the actual S4 SPlannerAppWidget.apk in the system/app with the one I found. Everything seems to work since I have now the task widget, but the calendar widget is a bit different, I think due to the different screen resolution and is not optimized for the use with the S4.
I thought the best way to have both the widget, the new one from the S4 and the task from the Note 2 would be to install both the apk, but this is not possible since they have the same package name. So I tried to change the name by decompiling the Note2 apk with apktool and changing all the references within the smali and res files form SPlannerAppWidget to SPlannerAppWidgetTasks.
Unfortunately this does not seem to work and the new apk I have recompiled don't show up anything one put in the system/app directory.
I have joined my new apk... I know many people are looking for a solution about the task widget and this could be a useful solution if someone with more experience than me in modifying an apk could take a look at it and discover why this do not work.
Many thanks in advance.

[Q] How to add my old Fonts?

I'm new on the N 9005 and was badly surprised by the new Samsung politics with Fonts in Settings.
As owner of an oooold Note 1, a beautiful N 2, I saw, sadly, that the "progress" or "improvements" aren't no so glamorous as the N3 phone itself.
And one of these "improvements" are the impossibility of apply any of my dozens of fonts stored this years. They are "not compatible".
But, the worst is that Samsung provides an online link to..... Samsung Apps, to download new fonts. And I retrieve there some of my fonts that I've payed previously on Play Store, but with a price... That stinks.
OK. I found out "iFonts" on Play St, but that's not exactly what I want...
Is there some workaround, some app or tricky thing to install any "com.monotype.xxx" font, as I did on previous phones?
Thanks!
OK, a little UP to say maybe I've found out a solution, here, in Spanish (sorry) : http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=819706
I've not tryed yet....It seems that this can work.

Do Not Disturb mode (Samsung version)

While my RD title might mislead you - I was an avid HTC user, fan and developer for years - I changed to S8 this year and to my surprise the Do Not Disturb options are Samsung Custom, or lack of them to be precise. So how one can set up multiple rules for DND (says weeknight / weekends / until next alarm ) without the help of 3rd party apps. I know Android stock has these options, HTC 10 (what i've used before s8) as well, Samsung in its mighty wisdom removed them for some reason
And please do not send me to 3rd party apps (most of them needing a License for more than one profiles) Since in Android starting with M it is there IMHO what Samsung did is a downgrade from what stock Android offers in regards to DND rules customization.
I have the international version of the S8 and it does indeed have DND rules under Sound and Vibration.

international here as well and yes there are rules but you can set only one rule (you select the days you want and start / end time) but I can't find how to set say Sunday - Thursday 23.00 - 7.00 Fri-Sat 23.30 - 9.00. at best i can set for all days same start / end time
Thing I'm finding too on my AT&T S8 is DND doesn't seem to enable after reboots and I need to go in the settings... Toggle something, then when it's scheduled it will enable itself til the next reboot.

Funny thing, I had multiple rules on my G5. I used smartswitch to transfer my stuff to the S8 and my rules appear to have been copied over. The only problem is that there is no way to change or delete them.
None of the stock Samungs S8's have the option to set more than one profile for DND regetably.?

None of the Samsung it seems. Tested on wife's S6 and is the same.
I know I might seem to be making a big deal over such a small thing but why take something and reduce its functionality just for the sake of making your own customized version is beyond me
Who knows? Just a Sammy thing I guess, just think it could be worse.. could be missing all together.

My Custom doesn't work.
My life schedule has changed so I didn't notice the scheduling disappearance, but 6 months ago that would have really irked me.
My problem is Custom doesn't work. It's set up exactly as it has always been. The exact same list of favorites. But, it doesn't make a peep. The texts will show up on the screen but they don't beep, and the phone doesn't ring. I have a parent in extraordinary ill-health and this is close to me getting a new phone since I'm still in my 14 days.
Android setting still there, just hidden
There's a YouTube video on this, called "How to add multiple do not disturb rules on S8/S7/S6 Nougat/MM Touchwiz". I would link it, but as a guest, I can't url. You have to download a third party app to access the settings, but I can still use the shortcut to the hidden setting after deleting that app, so other than letting you explore more settings on the phone, the app is not necessary for the Do Not Disturb function to work.
You can download QuickShortcutMaker and search automatic rules
I hope the following info can help somebody:
Samsung released Good Lock 2018, in which it has a submodule named Routines, you may use it to set multiple DND rules, basically a stripped down and less powerful version of Tasker, but it is Samsung official, free and I see in some cases it works better than third party apps.
You should be able to find it in Samsung apps store or you can get it from APK mirror.
Rules removed after reboot

I used your trick to create the missing rules in my Galaxy S7 G930L (Samsung's Android version only allows a single rule). Nevertheless the rules are removed anytime I reboot hte phone.
Any idea about how to fix them forever?
I own a rooted phone

How did you manage to do this? I am trying to do this now on the S10+ yet I cannot find any way to add a rule. I get to the screen (I think) but it says no rules added and that is all...
