Exclamation mark on data signal (help) - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A little info
Nougat Preview 5
Unlocked & Rooted
T-Mobile..
For some reason I kept losing signal on my data, I kept seeing the exclamation mark. So I deleted all the apn I don't need except for one which T-Mobile GPRS ipv4/ipv6 . Changed it a few times to just Ipv6 and save then
Restart my phone & still got the exclamation mark.
So then I did the *#*#4636#*#* and changed to just LTE Only and then restarted my phone and bam got service but very low Downloads from 8-10mbs only, which is really weird.
Now my question I don't remember what the default setting on the *#*#4636#*#* before changing it to LTE Only.
It had like LTE/hspa/something something.
**Update I'm still on LTE Only**
And at work I only get 8-10mb & at home 20mb flat

You've said you deleted all the other APNs except for the one you needed. I could be wrong, but make sure you are using the "fast.tmobile.com APN & not the epc.tmobile.com, whichever one you've kept.

[Q] No more data connection

Hey. I have an HTC Magic (32A) from Rogers. I followed the guide on the CM wiki for rooting my phone and installing CM 6.1.0. The installation and such went without a hitch; it's working fine, except my data connection no longer works. WiFi works perfectly fine, though. It's just a shame because I'm now paying for a data plan that I can't use.
I read around here that it's usually an issue with the APN info, but I triple-checked it and it seems all fine and dandy. The "Data connection" option is also checked, as it should be.
The only thing I can think of at this point is the ridiculous 911 debacle, but the Rogers waiver form for reactivating data says my IMEI is invalid -- this seems like a very common issue, but I'm a bit weary of calling tech support since I have a rooted phone.
If it's even possible at this point, I wouldn't mind even reverting back to my stock 2.1 state, except I didn't make any backups with nandroid first. Any help would be appreciated. Here's my version stuff:
HBOOT-1.33.2010
RADIO-3.22.20.17
Have you tried popping your sim card into another 3G capable phone, and see if it can manage any 3G traffic?
If so, then it is not a provider / data enable issue, but rather a phone issue.
If you installed CM, then your APN should have been set automatically (CM comes with a big list). If you messed with the APN and saved it, you might wanna check it a 4th time
Have you tried the 2g/3g toggle button in the power widget that comes with CM?
Have you tried the settings of the power widget that comes with CM, where you can configure the toggle options for 2g/3g?
Do you even have normal "g" (GPRS)?
Do you live in a concrete underground bunker? Have you got good enough signal for data traffic?
Data service enable from your network provider is usually to the SIM, and not to the phone (where you IMEI resides).
I think if they block the phone based on IMEI (or don't recognize your IMEI), then you will have no connectivity (both data and voice/txt).
Thanks for the reply!
I tried putting the SIM card into another phone just now (a Nexus One, unrooted, stock ROM), and it's the same thing: voice/text works but no data.
I've had no luck with the APN list from CM. I tried another list I found on the internet somewhere but that didn't work either. I've since reset it back to the CM default.
Tried the 2G/3G toggling, didn't work.
I've never even seen the data icon that shows 3G or regular G. Is there a better way to check if I have a GPRS connection?
I've tried it at multiple altitudes. Right now I'm sitting in an office and I've got all four bars on my signal.
My uncle happens to work for Rogers; I asked him about it and he said he'll send me a list of instructions on what to do, in case the problem is indeed on Rogers' end. If it works then I'll post it here for y'all.

[Q] AT&T APN Help

So I called AT&T this morning to see how my data was provisioned after getting the new SIM for my Nexus 4. I was getting spotty coverage before my re-provision in Tallahassee, FL (a city that is supposed to have HSPA+) and was only seeing HSPA:10 in my phone status screen. I also downloaded the phone info app and ran a ping test...not even a single flash of HSDPA or HSPAP.
Anyway, I called and got my data re-provisioned to an iPhone 5 LTE plan since I bought an iPhone 5 with my last upgrade to unlock and sell overseas. I gave them the IMEI and they successfully moved me to an iPohne 5 LTE plan. Now I knew this wouldn't fixed my problem so I dug through the first 12 pages of this thread. Everything else was garbage anyway lol. I came across this link and added all 5 APNs to my APN list and deleted the one that was there. I did a few speed tests while on the 2nd APN (AT&T HSPA+) and got a maximum of 5.5kbps up and 1.5kbps down. I also re-ran the ping test in the phone info app and saw flashes of HSDPA and HSPAP.
Now on to my question: in my phone status screen I'm only seeing flashes of HSPA+:15 but mostly holding at HSPA:10 and although I'm seeing faster speeds, I'm sure I can see better. Is this normal? Also, I can't connect to any kind of data when I select the 3rd APN, the AT&T LTE one. Is this also normal since I'm not in an LTE market? In my phone info app I have my radio set to WCDMA preferred right now but tried changing it to LTE/CDMA/GSM to see if anything would change on APN 3 but nothing happened.
tl;dr - Are there any APNs I could try or settings I could change to cause more HSPA+:15 data access?
Thanks will be given to any and all helpful responses!

Have a look at the page before the reply you posted on the question thread. It goes through and explains the different codes stand for.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34952203&postcount=681
HSPA:15 is the fastest they have right now and it basically means HSPA+. HSPA:10 is standard HSPA and is used when there is no data being transfered to save on battery (which is why your icon switches between 3G and H).
As to why your speeds are slow, I'd be more likely to blame AT&T than the phone/software. They aren't exactly known for providing a lot of real-life bandwidth to their customers.
Thank you very much for your reply. That makes much more sense! I don't know why I didn't consider data band switching to save battery...cause it pops over to HSPA+ whenever I do the ping test (under load).
As long as I know that I've done everything in my power to get the fastest available speeds, I'm happy. Thanks again!!

VZW 4.4.2 (XT1060) on T-Mobile

Verizon is at it again. When using a T-Mobile SIM in my XT1060 with 4.4.2, I'm stuck on EDGE where I'd previously get HSPA+. The APN setup has been fixed, so it no longer disappears, but it doesn't really matter if you're stuck on 2G.
4.2.2
Worked perfectly with HSPA+ and LTE
4.4
Broke APN setup
Gimped HSPA+ speeds
4.4.2
Fixed APN setup
EDGE only data
EDIT: EDGE is forced in Global mode; select LTE/GSM/UMTS and UMTS only to restore HSPA+; wait for the modem to cycle and allow the SIM to register on the network
I still have issues with HSPA+ speeds on my phone. It could be a localized issue, but I'll have to do further testing.
So, it's officially useless.
All have voice/SMS, though some had issues with voice on T-Mo's LTE.
You are the second person to report this. Could you try a factory wipe or something? I have no idea why it would be EDGE only.
I am curious what would have changed. I did compare the built in APN list between 4.4 and 4.4.2 and noticed the built in APN for T-Mobile US changed from fast.t-mobile.com on 4.4 to epc.t-mobile.com in 4.4.2 which is an older APN. Have you tried manually adding back the fast.t-mobile.com APN?

Only the unlocked phones automatically add APNs. With the Verizon XT1060, I have to manually enter the APNs, and I only use fast.t-mobile.com.
On top of the EDGE only limitation, it occasionally times out completely, so that there's no throughput up or down through the modem. It seems Verizon has completely gimped data on other carriers. I disabled the Verizon APN and APN Permissions apps, but there's something deeper that's causing this. It could be in the kernel, which wouldn't be a good thing at all.
The kicker though is (excerpt from FCC's C Block Rules):
(e) Handset locking prohibited. No licensee may disable features on handsets it provides to customers, to the extent such features are compliant with the licensee's standards pursuant to paragraph (b)of this section, nor configure handsets it provides to prohibit use of such handsets on other providers' networks.
The key words are disable features and prohibit. Technically, they aren't prohibiting access of the handset on T-Mobile's network, but they are limiting it in a way.
I got H+ with 4.4.2 on my VZW Dev X. I had to edit the APN Type setting to be default, mms, supl. The rest of the settings matched my T-Mobile Galaxy S4 LTE's APN settings. Under mobile network settings, I also have selected LTE/GSM/UMTS.
I am at the office where it is serviced by an internal antenna system, so I don't have T-Mobile LTE, and I don't think its setup for 1900Mhz UMTS, but there is a refarmed T-Mobile antenna and LTE outside.
Ok, now it switched to just bars. And back to Edge. Not sure if this is due to the internal antenna system or the update.
Voice calls (in/out) work, SMS send/receive works, MMS send/receive works, web browser works, Hangouts works.

This makes sense as the change in the default APN was the only obvious change I saw between 4.4 and 4.4.2. It's at least encouraging that you got HSPA+ to work by changing the APN. Have the others with problems tried changing or adding a new APN to match the one from the previous build? For reference here is the old and new APN information copied directly from the APN list on the Verizon Moto X.
XT1060 with 4.4 built in T-Mobile APN:
<apn auth="NONE" mmsc="http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc" password="none" server="*" user="none" apn="fast.t-mobile.com" mnc="260" mcc="310" carrier="T-Mobile US" protocol="IPV4V6" mtusize="1440"/>
XT1060 with 4.4.2 built in T-Mobile APN:
<apn auth="NONE" mmsc="http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc" password="none" server="*" user="none" apn="epc.tmobile.com" mnc="260" mcc="310" carrier="T-Mobile US" preloaded="true" type="default,mms,supl,hipri,fota" protocol="IP" mtusize="1440"/>
Mine is still on EDGE, and doesn't even bother going to HSPA+ even though it's in the area. Even without the APN setup, it would automatically connect to HSPA+. The speeds just wouldn't be right until you put in the APN settings.
Speedtest reported 0.01Mbps down and 0.02Mbps up, so it's definitely 2G and not a reporting bug.

What do you mean without the APN setup? Just confused as to whether you are describing before on 4.4 and now on 4.4.2. I think everyone is in agreement that the APN settings for T-Mobile on 4.4.2 are wrong which is definitely part if not all of the problem since it's the most obvious change from 4.4. Have you tried adding a new APN using the settings used in the 4.4 build and selecting that as the APN to use?

As I told you before, the Verizon Moto X DOES NOT automatically add APNs. It never did on 4.2.2, 4.4, or 4.4.2. Only VZWINTERNET is ever automatically added.
I also said that I'm using fast.t-mobile.com.
It's not the APN setup. HSPA+ is disabled.

I know what you said but you are referring to what shows on the APN list in Mobile Settings. Just because an APN doesn't show in that list doesn't mean it isn't preloaded into the phone but set to not be viewable. There is a huge list of APN's preloaded onto the Moto X for just about every major GSM carrier in the world and these are used when a SIM used when on that carrier (file pulled directly from my Moto X is attached in the zip file to this post). If the APN preloaded is wrong it will cause problems with data working. My question on you using the APN from 4.4 wasn't just the APN address of fast.t-mobile.com but also the remaining settings which matter as well such as protocol and type. I am just trying to help from my experience dealing with these sorts of issues and the fact that another user got HSPA+ to work earlier today is what made me think there might be more to it.
Anyway I should have access to a friends AT&T Nano SIM in the next day or two and since it uses the same band of HSPA+ as T-Mobile does on the Moto X I can check on that too.

I know they're included in the build, but I've ALWAYS had to manually add the APN to get things working properly; the included APNs are usually for carrier unlocked retail phones like the XT1053. In 4.4, manually added APNs would usually disappear, but I found a workaround to make it stay. Still, HSPA+ was artificially limited (0.05-0.20Mbps down, 1.0Mbps up) just like when the APN isn't setup. Now on 4.4.2, it will only connect to EDGE, regardless.
Looking further, even when using fast.t-mobile.com, the phone forces epc.tmobile.com and EDGE only. I'm not rooted, so there's nothing I can do about it.

Okay that is bizarre. I just remembered one of my coworkers had a iphone 5s on t-mobile and just borrowed her SIM. I am also on a stock, non-rooted Verizon Moto X running 4.4.2 and it connected to HSPA+ immediately. I didn't even change the APN at all. I even ran a speed test and got 4.33MB down and 1.84MB up. Here is a screen shot of the status attached. Not sure why it worked for me and not for you.
Could be time for an FDR, but before that, I'm gonna try a different area of service.
I have another T-Mobile SIM that I can register as well if all else fails.

Yeah I wish I could tell you that I did something special to get HSPA+ to work, I literally did nothing other then take out my Verizon one and put in the T-Mobile one, didn't even do a restart or change it off of Global (although I did shortly after switch it to LTE/GSM/UMTS to test that as well). The weird thing is it didn't connect to LTE at all when I know on 4.4 I could get it to connect it just wouldn't let you make calls. To be fair I didn't try much to try and get LTE to work aside from adding a new APN with the so called corrected T-Mobile LTE APN settings as my coworker wanted her SIM back. Maybe others can play around with that more.

I even went into fastboot and erased the modemst1 and modemst2 again to have it reregister everything. Still nothing. Unless T-Mobile removed HSPA+ from the area around my home recently, I'd say it's the phone.
I'll keep playing with it. I'd really like the 4.4.2 flash files though just to be sure something didn't happen in the OTA update.

In Mobile Network settings what do you have selected under Select Network (the last option)? Do you have it on Automatic or UMTS only? Also try downloading this application https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tapbase.LTEswitcher
Then once you have it try setting the preferred network to WCDMA only or GSM Auto and see if that helps as well.

Just as a follow up.. At home, in an area where T-Mobile has HSPA on 1900mhz, I do get H+ and even LTE (band 4) (LTE speed test screen shot -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/X-STUFF/2014-02-27 01.47.07.png ).
When On LTE, the "bug" of making a call drops signal/service still happens.
When I keep it on UMTS and have an H+ connection, it works fine. And the connection is stable at home.
I'm attaching some shots.
And I should mention, the SIM I'm using is a T-Mobile Nano SIM that I use with an adapter in my T-Mobile Galaxy S3. I had it switched to Nano so I could also put it in my iPhone if/when needed (its a work thing).

T-Mobile MMS Fix over 4G LTE

I have heard that people using the MT7-L09 version of the Ascend mate 7 are having issues sending MMS Messages over Cellular network and the only way you can make and receive them is over Wi-Fi. Well the issue is Really common on Internationally unlocked cellular phones and the issue is really simple to fix. The problem resides in the APN Settings. When you pop in your T-Mobile or AT&T SIM card, the device sometimes sets up a Automatic APN Set up within the device. Sometimes, when the device does this, it puts down incorrect or old values. Now to the fix.
GO into Settings. Under Wireless & Networks tap More, then tap Mobile Network, and then Access Point Names. Under general you will see a already preseted APN called T-MobileData and under MMS something called T-MobileMMS. If you click the "i" next to the T-MobileData APN you will see that there is nothing set under the MMSC. To add the MMSC value just tap the value and type in http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
After that tap OK then go down to APN Type and make sure default, supl, mms, hipri, dun is displayed. If not, add in the missing values. Make sure that mms is included in the APN Type or MMS Messaging will NOT work. Just for future proofing Make sure you APN Protocol is set to IPv4/IPv6 as set with the latest LTE phones.
Once done select OK and then Save at the bottom. Once done make sure to Select the APN Radio button you just edited a couple of times. You may see your Data connection go out and then show 3G/H/H+. This is normal as it is refreshing settings. Let your phone sit up 5 minutes or until 4G Shows up. Once it shows up, hop into the Messaging app and try sending a MMS message to yourself and you should be able to send and receive it without wifi over 4G LTE.
Those on AT&T, the same fix applies, but with your specific Carriers's APN Settings
Just to let you guys know and other friends, if you ever get on a AWS band (3G/H/H+) and you have NO data connection and your carrier is T-Mobile, this is because T-Mobile has shut down (Or will be shutting down and removing) all AWS band antennas from their towers to make room for new Cat. 6 Carrier Aggregation. So if you get the MT7-L10 version (which is the 3GB RAM Non-LTE version) the AWS bands probably won't work with it and you are stuck with using 2G EDGE as data. Well I finally got the roaming "R" out of my notification bar and instead of just LTE it says 4GLTE now just like my previous phone (s5) on Verizon. Data, texts, mms, and calls all work. The problem is it doesn't stick after a reboot. After rebooting it's back to saying just LTE and the "R" is there. If anyone knows how to make it stick can you advise me please?
Have you disabled roaming itself?

I just tried that and i got no carrier label and no bars at all. In settings network is unknown, cell network type is unknown, cell network state disconnected. Service state says voice in service and data out of service.
And i just dialed *#*#4636#*#* and chose LTE/CDMA auto prl. Then swiped down my notification bar to enable and disable airplane mode to restart the radios and i have 4GLTE again. Changed the apn to VZW that i had on there i added. In settings everything is on and says Verizon.

I know that this "4G LTE" icon can occur when LTE-only mode is engaged...is it possible you had LTE only and were not connected to CDMA at all? I've had that occur in some fringe areas and I believe I temporarily had the "4G LTE" icon vs. just "LTE" in those cases...though it sounds like you had calling working so I'm guessing this may be a different scenario. Very strange though...

Yes that used to happen when my phone info was set on LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). But earlier today i changed it to LTE/CDMA auto (PRL) and everything works and the notification bar says 4GLTE. It stayed like that all this evening till i rebooted a few mins ago.
On the phone info page after you dial *#*#4636#*#* there's the 3 dot menu on the upper right side. On that there's an option to select radio band and when you hit it you get 3 options. USA band, band mode 6 and band mode 7. So i picked USA band and on the main page i set it to LTE/CDMA auto prl. I sent an mms to myself and it works and speed test readings is 9.84 dl and 0.91 up. I just can't make it stick after a reboot.

Data Roaming needs to be enabled in order for Verizon data service to work.
Ahh. Well, leave it to Verizon to be that way. I know going through dialer was a option but even with sprint in the past as CDMA on some older aosp ROMs, prl auto wasn't even a solution. Sometimes roaming was preferred instead of prl. So that's why I started with questioning that. If the data entry toggle makes a difference, hen I'm glad that's the solution and rather it be something you can fix on demand as opposed to it being permanent because of a carrier back end problem - - problem being in the community eyes.
Can I ask what APN you guys are using because whenever I do get LTE it says 4glte and also no service

Well i found out with these settings i couldn't access my voicemail. I had a voicemail notification and you can't use the #1 button because it's not supported, so i used *86. It would dial out and connect for a split second and cut off. And i tried multiple times pressing the #1 and *86 to get to my voicemail but couldn't. So back to the old settings with just LTE and the "R" on my notifications bar. Thank you for the help!

These are the APN settings. On the APN type i got 2 different versions from different websites. One says to put "dun" and the other says leave it out. And on bearer one says leave it as unspecified and the other put LTE. This is exactly what i have on mine.
Name: VZW
APN: VZWINTERNET
MMSC: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 311
MNC: 480
APN Type: default,dun,mms,supl
APN Protocol & APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
Bearer: Unspecified
everything else: None or Not Set
Quick note you have to add the above APN. With a vzw sim you can't add one so you have to borrow a gsm sim card either att or tmobile and put it in and add this and save it. Then put the vzw sim and you'll see the one you created. Check mark this APN and you'll be good to go.
Are you all able to use HD Voice & video calling with the native dialer on the Verizon network? Some phones have an option under settings called 'Advanced Calling'. This is where you can turn on HD Voice & Video Calling for Verizon.

Not sure about video calling, but HD Voice/VoLTE, yes. The one Verizon topic you didn't bump P) has screenshots & instructions from someone who is using VoLTE with the native MiFavor dialer: https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/help/verizon-compatibility-t3420991/page41
