Just curious, when Google finally releases Android Nougat in its final version, are people planning to upgrade straight from the dev preview to the final version? Alternately are people planning to wipe and load from scratch? Just curious what path people are taking and potentially best practices.

A clean install from a full wipe for a new version number.
I'll wait for a XDA chef to bake it, then I can flash away!
I think I'm going a clean install. This last preview hasn't been too good for me

Just curious, how long do previous iphone models get the latest iOS update when a new iphone comes out? Is it same day or shortly after?
I'm glad to see Google is closing the time between a Nexus device launch and past device getting the latest Android update.

Older IOS devices get it on the same day, or a couple of days before the new Iphone is released.
For Example IOS5 came out on Oct 12 this year and the Iphone 4S wasn't released until Oct 14..
its easy when they only have one or two other architectures to worry about. with the ns theres at least 3 i think
That's a good idea for an internal test. Can't wait!

well i tried my little ace up my sleeve. downgraded back to 2.3.4 stock prerooted, to see if i would get and no go lol. it just prompted me for gingerbread 2.3.7 updating. worth a shot i might try this everyday.
Not that it will likely matter for you but even your phone was first in line for the ota up to ics, you would almost certainly get the ota update up to 2.3.7 if you're sprint and 2.3.6 for gsm. prior to ota notification for 4.0
So if you're going to do revert to stock and hope you're first to get the ota thing, make sure it is actually the latest stock.
This just makes me all the more eager to get the ota on my phone.
i have an employee edition i9020....can u please tell me how should i turn my phone to stock to check for OTA

alright...so once i flash the stock rom, will it be able to catch ota updates? or do i need to revert stock recovery too? finally what about root? should i unroot it to get the OTA?
And there is no employees edition of the phone. The limited edition phone ( battery cover) is not a "employees edition"
but i knw this one is the early model which was givn to employees
That's true. You will always get the next in line OTA. I remember that's how it was on my Nexus One.

You get the OTA only on stock,non-rooted, out-of-the-box rom.
False. It does not matter if you're rooted. Or if custom recovery
Ima wait till its rooted and flashable

DISCLAIMER: this is not another generic speculation thread just to throw around guesses about dates for the 4.3 release. yes, i am asking you to speculate, but i have a legitimate reason for posing this question, so please, do not troll and/or flame. thank you.
so my nexus 4 arrived today. i'm eagerly awaiting getting out of work so i can get home and get to playing with it. i absolutely intend to unlock, root and flash a custom recovery/rom/kernel. however, word is that 4.3 is set to release on june 10th (or thereabouts) which is this monday. i'd hate to take the time to do all of the aforementioned things, only to have to reflash stock shortly thereafter in order to grab the OTA.
do you think 4.3 will actually drop this week, and as such, i should wait before going flash crazy?
or i guess an even better question is the one posed in the thread title. if i flash a custom rom now, how long before the rom will update to 4.3? i'm going with PA and probably the latest franco. can't wait to play around with halo!
as soon as the source is out.... they'll be out with custom roms with the very basic stuff like deodexed, superuser and such
no go flash crazy, enjoy it while you can. even when 4.3 is out, it'll take time to backport all the existing customization and features to 4.3
Do this unlock the bootloader flash custom recovery flash SU zip then make a nandroid backup then flash any ROM kernel or mod you want. If the ota comes out then you can just flash your backup and install ota with no problems.
Roms will be updated usually with in a few days after the source is released just because the ota is released doesn't mean the source is out

I would'nt bother waiting.. since google editions of other phones have been launched it means the wait will be longer, since they will have to all get the update together so as not to advantage one phone over the other... now i hear sony is have a google editon too, the wait will be even longer still.

duh... this is the perfect solution. why didn't i think of that? thanks, dude!
so i was planning on doing this today, but then obviously when 6.0 comes out i can't take the OTA because of custom recovery so I'd have to wait for someone to make a flashable rom.
so what's everyone else doing? should I root now and enjoy it, or wait for 6.0 then root? no timetable from moto yet

Ota is not the only way pretty sure we will have images or someone grab ota and post zip

I'm waiting but mainly cuz I like this phone stock and I'm in no rush. Also I don't want to set everything back up so I will let marshmallow back it all up for me
You can always flash the stock ROM and take the OTA or wait a short time for a flashable version.

With a phone like this there is always going to be a way to install the latest update. Who cares about OTA.

nah i know, like i do with my nexus 7 (haven't touched stock android in a while since my note 4 and samsung tabs, so i really don't remember)
so you guys think there's gonna be some good dev to atleast get a flashable 6.0 out? might as well just do it. just wanted to see the general opinion
I would do it now. Unlocking the boot loader will wipe your phone. Like someone said above a flashable zip should be available soon after the OTA touches down.

To be honest it doesn't take much skill to do. I'm sure we have plenty of people already here who know how
sweet. alrgiht just did it! woo rooty goodness.
I wonder when we will get marshmallow ota or rom based. Seems like zero development on this device which kind of sucks. I just want some omni or beanstalk. Not sure if the dev area is waiting on source or how a that works but I figured by now we'd have something to flash.

When device trees are completed with no major bugs, expect many ROMs and kernels ? (should be very soon)

Good to hear, not bashing devs cuz I know I sure can't make a rom and appreciate the hard work that goes into it. I figured it was a source reason. Is that something moto needs to release or someone has to snag from the devices. I haven't flashed anything since the note 2 was release so just a little over eager I guess that and hearing people say devs might not be super keen here with the nexus coming soon.
LOL @ "zero development". This phone hasn't even been available for 3 weeks yet. If you ordered one on day one, you were lucky to get one 2 weeks ago.

I'm really surprised for this. On N5, we had m preview roms for every single preview release days after the release, which were just factory images turned into flashable roms, and they worked fine with multirom also.
For N5x, we don't have any of those apparently, and there doesn't seem also to be demand for it. We have unofficial multirom thanks to jolla and others, and yet there is no movement for more roms or profit for it.
This subforum is, for this being a Nexus, way more empty that for any other Nexus phone .
What? There are developer roms available here and you can opt-in to the beta here if you want to use OTA instead of flashing.

Neither 5X or 6P has N Preview roms. Not sure why the change but it is what it is.

Dont relock your bootloader. Because 1. You cant flash the factory images with it locked and 2. If the OTA fails see reason 1.
You aren't going to be on N for that long. There are simply too many bugs right now. So, when you are annoyed you are going to have to wait a day for the MM OTA (if you sign up for OTAs) or you are going to flash the MM images which require an unlocked bootloader. If you sign up for the OTAs, request the MM OTA, wait for it to come, take it and then want to go back to a custom ROM or root or whatever, you are going to need an unlocked bootloader.
Unless you plan on being on the stock ROM (MM or N, unrooted) for the foreseeable future, you dont want to lock that bootloader.

Yes if is there a way that we can just flash N and then if we want to go back and restore our custom ROMs without needing to use a stock recovery that would be awesome!! That would make things so much easier. Lol Looking forward to seeing that hopefully soon.
I agree with the OP. There are so many awesome devs who shred stock OTAs and make slim, light ROMs which are flashable via custom recoveries. I wish they did the same for N Developer Preview too.

That would be great. Wish I had the know how.
So I took the plunge and installed it. So far so good. Hopefully tomorrow or the next few days when they update the next release will even be greater.
Me too waiting for a striped down custom version of N ROM which can run side by side with M without the need of different vendor images.

I'd hold off a bit. From previous experience the first release or two are unstable (crashes, excessive battery drain, etc) and functionality is poor. Unless you got some free time on your hands and just want to quick check it out, but I'd def anticipate downgrading back to 10. Once the initially one is out they churn out more stable releases fairly quickly.
