Smooth - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just installed android N preview on a brand new Nexus 6P.
Had to return the other due to sound problems,Amazon refunded the entire price of the phone $462.72 with tax 32 GB Gold model.
Seems like i got a much Faster 64 GB model or maybe it has different internals.
This new phone screams along very snappy.
Have not rooted yet and may not still thinking about it.
Seems much faster than the one i got in March.
Was able to get the upgraded storage Model 64 gb VS 32 GB funny but this phone feels much faster.
Not sure if its Android N or something else
Sound quality is incredible when making calls,people-ask me if i have a new phone, because it sounds so clear.
If you bought your Nexus from Amazon call them up and let them know if the call quality is no good.
In my case they heard it when i called customer service, restarted my year warranty over again, and said if i wasn't happy return if for a different phone.
90 Day full refund window,Just wanted to know if anyone has a similar story?
Saved about $60 total over the original 64 GB price.
Asurion didn't want to service the phone at all only if i dropped it.
Canceled that Garbage insurance and just put $11 a month in a phone repair account.
Amazon stated i could return the nexus for any reason no restock fee for the 90 day duration.
So if this one has bad sound quality ill return it for the 2016 nexus once its available.
But its running so sweet makes me think i had a bad unit to begin with.
Has any of my fellow XDA members had to RMA your Nexus6p phones as well ?

[Q] Warranty Exchange w/ T-Mobile

So I had to go through warranty exchange with Customer Care since my volume rocker and bezel are loosening. I am past the 14-day exchange window so the stores will not do anything for me. One thing I was insistent on is that I did not want a refurbished unit (the device is less than 30-days old, why should I accept a refurbished unit?). The customer care associate was pretty insistent himself in telling me that he cannot request a new unit for me, however it is a "great possibility" that I would receive a new unit due to the phone being pretty new. I reluctantly agreed to have the replacement shipped to me, since they refused to let me do an in-store exchange.
Has anyone gone through this with their Vibrant? I'm looking to find people who have received warranty replacements from Customer Care, if anyone has gotten a new or a refurbed unit. Bottom line, I will not accept a refurbished unit. I figured worse comes to worse, I will send the refurbed one back and continue to ***** with them over the phone.
I'm flipping pissed too, because it was just so unnoticeable during the first 14-days, and then it inherently got worse with normal use. So now I'm feeling stuck. I do not know if the rep was telling me it will "likely" be a new unit just to get me to stop complaining, or if it's really true.
I'm with you - I wouldn't accept a refurbished unit either. However, since you are out of your 14-days (I assume you don't live in California) I don't think there is much you can do.
How long have you been a T-Mobile customer? The best bet to have issues resolved is always contact retention department. Not only are the employees there more knowledgeable, but based on your tenure with T-Mo, they often will do things for you other reps won't.
How far out of 14 days are you? I would take your box and everything back to the store you got it at and talk to the manager. Just be super nice about it and ask them to see if they can exchange it for you. Sometimes they can make exceptions, I know at my store we do.
I have exchanged phones in the past that were referbs and they come in pristine condition. They are practically brand new and have zero blemishes.
Don't worry about it.
Question though...
What do you mean the bezel is coming loose. I noticed that on the left side of the phone the bezel does not seem to be on correctly like the right side it might just be my eyes though. I hear a lot of squeaking from it though kinda annoying.
My volume button was loose out of the box feels cheap as hell when pressing it but it does not really bother me too much.

Mine is perfect. I am quite impressed with the build quality and iPhone4 fanatics who have looked at it have been impressed with it. Their quality control may be poor, but when you get a good one, its terrific.

The phone was purchased on launch day, so tomorrow will mark 30-days.
Unfortunately, I already tried returning my phone to the store. They wouldn't take it. They offered to call customer care to send me a refurb, which I declined. Worst part is, I can't try again because I am out of the area where it was purchased (we are on a family plan, the account holder is in Georgia, I'm in New Jersey, and I was on vacation there when we attempted the exchange this past week.) I do have the receipt though and can try at a different store, but I doubt a different store will want to inherit my problem.

We've had T-Mobile since 2002 or 2003, whatever year they first took over Voicestream. If this replacement is a refurb, I will be contacting the retention department.

Yes, that is what is happening to mine, and it's a defect. The bezel is loose and creaks when held. Also, the volume rocker rattles around in the phone.
I've played with the store display units, as well as another Vibrant we had purchased on our family account, and it has none of these issues. They are solidly built. So it's obvious that some of batches weren't properly assembled.
At my T-Mobile location my rep was having problems with her Vibrant and decided to try to tough it out. She did some master resets and didn't exchange within 14 days. She received a refurb from T-Mo.
As a manager I've gotten to the point where refurbs no longer bother me. Most of the time the refurbs come back in excellent condition, especially now that we're doing the certified open box program where people can buy COB phones.
Honestly if you put a refurb and a new vibrant side by side you couldn't tell the difference. If they hadn't said anything you wouldn't have known. Besides it comes with the same 1 year manufactures warranty so its still covered.
Did you purchase the phone at full price or as a subsidy? If at full price you have 30 days to exchange at store.

As a subsidy.
I know refurbs are supposed to be just as good or even better, but I've never had any luck with anything refurbished. Anything with a screen has always had hairline scratches. Either that or it's very obviously been used with lots of normal wear and tear and marks/scuffs.

It doesn't bother me too much I would have just perfected a more solid feeling phone.
Besides they charge you $10 to ship it out to you.
I would much rather save those 10 bucks and if the phone has some real issues I will return it. I also don't want to go through the headache of finding all my apps and redownloading them and getting my phone back to the way it previously was. Meh. I will stick with a few creaks here and there.
If you do however decide on doing this please tell us your experience with the referb phone. I am interested.
You whine too much. Who cares what it is. As long as you get a device that is new or refurbed, you won't even be able to tell the difference. Just enjoy your phone. And also, customer retention won't do anything as far as your problem.

Sorry, but I don't think I'm being unreasonable in requesting a new 500 dollar item when the one I just purchased was defective. Sure, 6 months down the line, something happens, give me a refurb. That's reasonable because the value of your purchase declines with time and with your own use. 30 days old is brand spanking new, and I should get the same if something is wrong with it.
I have one getting delivered to me today. I've been with T-mobile for close to ten years and they overnight shipped it for free to me. Mine is having an issue when charging where the usb cord is very loose. They rep said I would get a new or like new item but I will also be returning it if it not new. My phone is only 20 days old and I don't trust refurbished units enough when mine is only 20 days old. The loose card is making it so if the phone is not in the right position it won't charge

Your window for a new replacement is 14 days.
I just got a replacement unit from T-Mobile and frankly I have no idea how to tell whether it is new or refurbished. Is there a way to tell? I really don't care if it is refurbished as long as it looks like new and works properly (aside from GPS and compass of course), but I am really curious how you guys are able to tell whether the replacement unit you got is new or not.

usb port damage is covered by warranty

i have been so busy using and enjoying my evo that i dont have to come around to xda much these days but i have come to say something that maybe most of you already knew.
short version: i damaged my usb port on my evo and it sometimes would not charge and sprint is giving me a new phone for free.
this is not going to cost me a dime, the tech said it was a known issue and he ordered me a new phone and said it should be in a few days.
he said if there wasn't a known issue i would have had to pay $35 for a new phone. i thought i had a $50 dollar deductible, then they upped it to 100, not down to $35, but i guess i will take free.
i dont undersstand all the warranty options but i guess this time i didnt have too, being that they are going to swap it out for me for free.
i am rooted and running cm7, i flashed back to a stock nanadroid back up before i walked in. is there anyway that this rooting business can back fire on me?
on a side note, can anyone think of anyway to turn this new evo into a 3d phone?
If you didn't run s-on tool they will know your phone was rooted, but no big deal its not software related issues. Just so you know you just lost root, warranty phones come preloaded with 2.3.3 (same thing happened to me now im waiting for root). And your phone will be a refurbished one unless you are still in the first 30 days. As for the cost usb port failure is considered a manufacturers defect and that's why it's free. 35 dollars are for repairs that are your fault but not severe. 100 applies to loss or theft or severe damage.

darn it, i didnt know about the root issue!
thanks for the bad news lol
I recently had the usb port break, and traded in for a 3d. Guess I probably could have held on and waited for the galaxy s ii, but I didn't think they would cover my phone as I had it for just over a year, and traded in. Probably could have made more money selling my 4g on cl too.

Wow! That looks like a good deal. I'm so tempted. But last time I bought something that looked too good to be true from eBay I got scammed...
Did OP or anyone buy this?
"The shipment will take 7-14 WORKING DAYS
And we will process orders within 24-48 hours
All returned items MUST BE in the original packaging and you MUST PROVIDE us with the shipping tracking
number ,your eBay ID ,and specific reason for return
Returned items must be in its original condition and packaging with all components and accessories included
Return shipping and insurance charge are to be paid by the buyer
We do not guarantee the compatible issues "
**** that, you have to pay return shipping with insurance to China if there's an issue.

I agree. Last time I ordered a card on ebay that I thought was a 32GB class 10 kingston I later learned it was a fake when the writing came off from me touching. The worst thing is I didn't even save that much just so I just ordered a sandisk off newegg for $10 dollars more and Im happy.
That seller's feedback is near perfect though. And wow that 64GB card is so tempting.
Feedback
Feedback doesn't mean as much as you think. I recently saw something similarly attractive, a 32gb usb flash drive for like $14, and the guys feedback was like 99.2 or something, but when I got the card which also was shipping from China the actualy memory chip had been cut out. I looked the seller up on Google and got a load of scam complaints. I truly wonder though, how they have such great feedback...
lets all pitch in and buy one
am i the only one that got a little bit pissed with many threads in this section with obvious knock-off SD cards?
obvious fake SD cards are obvious there's no GREAT DEAL with something like that, the prices will NEVER get that low like it or not its FAKE
I am cautious when buying stuff like that from eBay.

This seller hasn't only got near perfect feedback he is also a top rated seller though but the price does look too good to be true.
I think a lot of times there are those that purchase items like this and don't even realize that they have been scammed and thus the good feedback. I mean I know a lot of people who just buy the products based on price and are not aware of how the product should function. for example it doesn't matter (because they don't know the difference) if it's a class 10 or a class 4 as long as their pictures are on it, to them it works as advertised and then give good feedback. Many may not even check or even know how to see if the card actually has as much memory as it should. the only thing that matters is that the price is right and that they received it ahead of the estimated delivery date (I once heard my daughter express surprise that she received a phone case way ahead of said date and would give a good feedback based on this)
Scam!!!!!!!

it's a scam. there were deals like this back on February. Me and my friend spent like almost $100. i lost my money. my friend got his money back from paypal.
They sent us no memory card, instead usb card readers. Please be careful!!! I learned my lesson

I bit the bullet and bought + paid for this. Not counting on it to be 64gb of course. However, while I've been burned by China before, I've also received the occasional unexpected gift.
I remember that I used to have a tool that could A) write a whole USB drive's memory, and report back it's true capacity, and B) modify the capacity declaration to more accurately reflect the drive's actual size.
I'll take a look and see if I can track this software down again, and I'll report back with my findings.

I think the XDA member demographics probably trend toward being a pretty astute tech-buying crowd. I doubt anyone will misinterpret the OP as an endorsement of that particular eBay auction.
If you're a frequent ebayer, and stay on top of timelines, then it's pretty low-risk to order stuff like this. The eBay and Paypal dispute systems work fairly well for buyers. Truthfully, most Chinese sellers will settle a complaint before it even gets to that stage. They seem to be very intent on avoid negative feedback, and preventing Paypal claims. In my experience, most Chinese sellers don't want to go through any kind of formal return process. I think their mentality is just to move on, push more product, and sell-sell-sell. They'll generally offer some sort of compensation for a product that doesn't work, or even just outright refund your purchase if you agree not to leave a negative feedback. Even if that isn't the case, eBay and Paypal are good about handling disputes over fraudulent items, and I doubt that you would ever be made to pay for tracked shipping back to China.
Where most people run into trouble, is that they let more than the 45 day dispute window elapse, or the wait beyond the point where negative feedback can be issued (at which point, most Chinese sellers on eBay don't care about your complaints). =
Instead of closing the thread, maybe the OP could more explicitly warn everyone about the likely fakeness?
SanDisk 64 gb for $16.99, if it sound too good to be true, IT IS. Goddamn when will you M.F. learn. I've bought so much stuff from china, cheap and expensive never been burned. you need to know whats real and whats not(how do you know: if it sound too good to be true, IT IS) . If it was priced around 40 or 30 dollars (20 to40% cheaper compared to global prices I would believe it. but nearly 70% cheaper....
If you know anything about electronics you should know that the margins on memory chips are extremely low at the moment.. could be theft... well if you like that buy it, karma is a *****. Do some research, before buying any thing: example in china a 1ghz dual core cortex a9 always means 2x 500mhz cores. a 256GB USB stick (are expensive and hard to get) on ebay @30 dollars: means a usbstick put on infinite loop copying. meaning you need to be glad if it turn out a 256mb file fits.
I expect more from people visiting these kinds of sites (i'm often disappointed), leave this threat open as a warning to the wannabe's -hackers-, and the really gullible folk.
if it sound too good to be true, it is.
ps even with proper research and guys with great ebay scores (witch means absolutely nothing, thank baby jezus for paypal) you can get burned, but you reduce the changes of getting burned significantly.

[Q] What to check when buying used N4

Hi guys. I finally made up my mind. I was looking for a phone to upgrade from s2 and had N4 and used s3 as options.
So I want to buy N4, I found one used for a week at a good prize and 16 gb so I will not have to buy the 8gb any more.
Question is there a code like *#0*#? on samsungs to check the phone?
I will get the proof of purchase as well, do I need to register anything else on google?

If I had a phone I used for a week and did not want it I would return it for a refund. Unless I did something to it that would not allow for a return. Then I would sell it "at a good price" to someone on say craigslist. Just saying.

Except you can sometimes make a profit on craigslist if they don't realize they are back in stock or don't want to wait. And then you don't have to wait for Google to receive the device and refund you.

First of all, I do not recommend buying the 8gb version, since you come from a S2 with expandable memory. I use 5 out of my 13gb free space for apps.. then I still need to download stuff and roms, take pictures and make backups. And also i stream music via spotify instead of downloading and keeping songs.
If you don't need the 8 extra gb, go for the 8gb version.
Then, I would look for scratches! If there are too many, I would allways make a lower offer to save some €.
If you can see that he obviously dropped it, check functionality eg. touchscreen responsivness, camera, speakers etc.
Do you mind if it's rooted? You will see an unlocked lock right under the google Logo on booting the device.

thanks, I payed for it and i will have it Friday. I will check everything very closely. It's the 16Gb version so it's perfect for me, when I had s2 I didn't ever filled the 11.5 GB .
I actually don't want to root but I have to, one of the reasons is that I want to get full screen 4.7. What I was thinking, aren't there secret codes for testing the unit like *#0#?
So I got it today, I guess I won't buy used phones ever again. It came with a delivery note from play store but the IMEI is different on that one vs the phone and box, also the seller has wiped the name and address from it (I feel like I was lied and cheated, it's not fair), the delivery note says 7 february, but the screen protector shows me that the phone was used more than 7 days, who knows, I might never find out. It has bleed kinda of a lot of stage effect there (ok all the lcd panels have, no problem) but it has also something like whiter mini blotches on the screen (I have those on my laptop from presure) very tiny maybe microns but yeah I saw them... All of this make me regret I did not chucked a little extra pound and bought a new phone. It will go back to the seller, I will loose on postage but learned my lesson.
I think I can't ever make a RMA request with that useless paper, even if I could I feel lied and cheated...
AW: [Q] What to check when buying used N4
I don't know about law in your country, but in Germany I would have threatened the seller, making him either sending me the right device (I think he just ordered a new one and gave you his old one with the new bill) or at least make him pay the postal charge (for both packages). We take fraud really serious over here.
I once ordered a s3 from an eBay seller and waited over 2 weeks just to find out that he didn't pay his amazon bill so that he never actually had the s3 I payed for. He was quite cooperative once I found out..

I called Google play store and they told me all that was needed was the phone's imei. As the warranty is attached. Though it might be stolen, who knows. If it isn't then just say you bought it online used and you have proof of purchase. Make sure you already have a Google wallet account and tell them you would like to transfer the warranty. They can send an email to the original owner asking for permission if they need to, but you should be good.

[Q] Need Advice for Buying a Secondhand Nexus 4 Tomorrow Morning

I've been looking around to get a Nexus 4, but the play store was just inconvenient and the fact that they charged shipping and tax was a major put off. So, I've been scouring both CraigsList and eBay to find a N4 that was closer to my price range.
I found a 16GB n4 for about $320 and a 8GB n4 for about $300. They both have a reported 1-2 months of usage and I'm going to go check out these two handsets tomorrow morning and I have a few questions as to what I should be wary about buying a N4 second hand.
By the way, should I be suspicious of the price points that these sellers have offered me? Are they too good to be true?
I know the obvious things to check for:
- Make sure all physical buttons are working.
- Make sure there are no screen defects (scratches, alignment, etc)
- Make sure that the seller will do a full factory reset before handing over the phone to me.
- Make sure there are no physical damages to the phone.
I'm still a little bit confused as to some of the more "N4 - specific" things.
- How would I find out what hardware revision it is and which revision is the best to have?
- Could these sellers have any "manufacturer defect" that they are not disclosing and are neglecting to return to Play Store, but selling to me?
- Is there anything else I should do before buying the N4? Any tests to run? Any particular feature or setting or readout?
And just some secondhand phone buying questions..
- Could the IMEI of the device be locked, disallowing me from being able to activate it with my carrier?
- Is there anything I can do to "officially" transfer the ownership to my name? What can I do to avoid being sold a stolen phone?
- Is there a chance the seller could report the phone as stolen after selling it to me?
This my first time buying a Nexus/Google phone or even a second hand phone so I'm really apprehensive and I have a lot of questions, but really excited to have a Nexus 4. Also, this is my first post at xda-developers! Thanks in advance for all the help, guys!!
For that price I think its better if you buy it directly from the Play Store play.google.com
349.00 16GB
299.00 8GB
Thanks, but I can't afford to pay for Credit Card fees and tax&shipping, so I just have to stick to buying something local just to make it easier and not have to jump through a lot of loopholes.
I have been through a couple of nexus 4's so i'll try and list some things to look for.
1. Look for a yellow hue/tint on the screen. open up the browser and messaging app and turn the phone sideways (landscape) and look for a uneven tone/hue/tint, use around a 50% brightness sometimes its noticable at %100 brightness some very dim.
2. Look for light bleed. Restart the phone and watch the black areas around the edge of the screen, also look for light bleed on different colored backgrounds.
3. Start the camera app. check BOTH front and back cameras for spots, and take a picture to make sure it works.
to answer some of your questions:
Q - How would I find out what hardware revision it is and which revision is the best to have?
A - While the phone is OFF hold down the power and volume down button, it will say HW version - rev_xx, some say rev 11 is best, i have had both 10 and 11 and notice no difference.
Q - Could the IMEI of the device be locked, disallowing me from being able to activate it with my carrier?
A - The nexus 4 is a unlocked phone and should not be locked, you should bring a working simcard with you to test the service. also i good thing to do is call your service provider and give them the imie of the phone to make sure it is not blacklisted/reported as stolen.
Q - Is there anything I can do to "officially" transfer the ownership to my name? What can I do to avoid being sold a stolen phone?
A - Get the Original receipt for it.
Q - Is there a chance the seller could report the phone as stolen after selling it to me?
A - They could, but hopefully you got the original receipt for it when your bought it or made a legal note declaring transfer of ownership with signatures from both partys.
I hope this helps, i wrote it kind of fast, also welcome to XDA
I really appreciate the heads up on the light bleeding issue and yellowish hue/tint.
I'll also make sure to get a copy of the receipt or make the seller sign that they're selling the phone over to me.
I'm really hoping that I will end up with a rev 10 or a rev 11 device.
I appreciate the help, XxSilent22xX!
I would honestly recommend bucking up and buying from the play store. Worth it.

Is there any reason you say this because I'm hoping I can get a 16GB on for about the price of an 8GB one lol
I guess being able to take it out of its original packaging does have its perks.
Ask for the persons gmail account so you can transfer the warranty to yourself. You'll be able to call Google and get a replacement if anything goes wrong.

I'd ask for an invoice and some personal information to transfer the warranty, a signed receipt would be good too.
Yes the IMEI can, will and is being blocked by ATT/Tmo and I don't know of any way for sure that you can check to make sure the phone isn't stolen.
Those prices aren't at all out of line for a 6mos. old device (yes they say theirs are <2mos old but the n4 itself isn't new) actually to me they are a little on the high side ($250 and $300 respectively is what I would be willing to pay used) but I'm guessing the early shortages have kept prices up.
SWow! That sounds really awesome to be able transfer warranty from the previous owner. Could you please give a little edit more detail on how I would do that?
So the manufacturer warranty is transferable from Google, then? So, do you think I could make them call the number at the point of sale to make then transfer warranty to me on the spot? Of so, what would be number to call?
Thanks! And I apologize for any typos since I'm on my DROID incredible 2.
Got my 8gb nexus for 250 on Craigslist. It's one of the 302k versions

bargain them down or buy it new. when u buy new, it comes with warranty and no chance of imei block.. tax and shipping makes $300 phone $335 phone, it's really not that bad.
Proud Owner of A Nexus 4!!
I bought the 8GB version!! I ended up liking how the 8GB version had been upkept with screen protector, case, and no scratches anywhere, so I ended up buying that for $270 and I am now a very proud owner of a Nexus 4 8GB version rev. 10!
I'm still deciding whether I should root or not, but for now I seem to have everything I need without rooting and the vanilla Android is the best thing I've ever experience and battery life too seems to be pretty decent for me. I got about 3.5hrs of screen time (on an 7.5 hour charge) while I was playing around with the device for most of the day and I was at about 33% before I started charging, that seems pretty good to me.
I got a copy of the original receipt and will hopefully be transferring the warranty over soon.
Thank you all for your help and advice!! And hopefully I can get started on continuing writing apps for Android now that I have a good device to code for.
Congrats on the new n4! As for rooting your phone that is up to you, you can root unroot anytime but I think you should atleast unlock the bootloader now because that will erase data and that's better to do now instead of later.
