Hello guys.
So I created a Nandroid backup and went on to flash a new ROM, but didn't like it so I restored from the Nandroid backup.
All my apps with their settings have been restored, but none of my files have been restored. My Downloads folder, my Screenshots folder, a folder where I stored some nice wallpapers, and so on. None of these folders have been restored. I tried to restore it again, but it gave me the same results. Am I missing something?
Thank you.

A nandroid doesn't backup your userdata, there isn't even an option to do so. And you don't need to wipe userdata when changing ROMs anyway. If you've wiped your userdata it's gone.

Oh wow, I thought it would backup the userdata as well since I've changed ROMs before a long time ago, and remembered that my userdata stayed intact.
I forgot that I never formatted the data partition. This one particular ROM wanted me to format it so I did it, unknowingly.
Thanks for the reply, appreciate it.

All ROMs want you to wipe the data partition. None of them should want you to wipe the userdata partition though. Data and userdata are two different things.

No, they're two different things. Data resides within userdata. Wiping userdata will wipe both, wiping data will only wipe data.

So I've been on rooted stock 4.2.1 since the purchase of the phone, and decided to flash the CM 10.1 new nightlies (4.2.2) and also Franco's kernel. I did a real full wipe and factory reset and built everything back up, restored with titanium.
And since then I've noticed significant slowness on the day-to-day. I don't know why this is happening?? Anyone has any ideas?
By slowness I mean NovaLauncher doesn't seem as sharp. The recent apps window lags every now and then. Things just seem to run much slower than before...
Anyone had this issue before? I've tried clearing cache and fixing permissions too but nothing worked.
Thanks for your help!
Did you backup System data and restore that too?? This kind of behaviour is generally seen when system data is ****ed up.
Maybe you can try a full wipe again (factory reset + format cache partition) and restore ONLY user apps.

No, I mean, did you back up System data from Titanium Backup when on stock and then restore it after flashing CM10.1??
Here's how it works (as far as i know)...
When you backup system data (from stock) the /system/data files are backed up
When you do factory wipe, /data, /system, /sd-ext (skipped where not applicable) and cache partitions are formatted
When you flashed CM10.1, /data, /system were again written with data from .zip file
When you restore User apps from Titanium, .apks are restored to /data/app and app data is restored to /data/data
But the catch is
IF you restore system data, old system data is restored (including some old system .apks) into new system
Restoring system data only has a point if your new ROM you are flashing is the same as your previous ROM.
This kind of thing also happens when you forget to flash gapps.

EDIT: Oops didn't notice you were a different person. Sorry.

Just tried this and things seem much better! Thanks:highfive:
Hi, I've got a Nexus 10 and I already have rooted and installed TWRP recovery. I'm used to get devices with microsd slot. As this is not the case, I have a noob question.
I'm having problems installing certain apps and I want to try wiping the device and see if after wiping, the installation suceeds. Just in case, I have already taken a nandroid backup, but, as the backup is located in the internal SD, I'm afraid that if I wipe the device, it will also wipe the backup. Will wiping the device erase the TWRP backup too?. The backup is located at /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/...... and so on. I think that wiping the device shouldn't wipe the /sdcard partition, but I'm not sure about this.
Can you please confirm that wiping the device will erase only /data and not /sdcard?
Thanks a lot.

I can't confirm anything; but I'd highly suggest just backing up the nandroid to a computer just in-case. I'm pretty sure though that the nandroid would remain as long as you didn't actually format data.

That's what I've done so far. I have copied the nandroid backup to my PC. I suppose that it's possible, in case the backup is deleted, that I can mount the partition from recovery and then using adb, push the backup in order to restore it. Is this the way to go?.
By the way, what you mean is that the backup will remain as long as I don't format /sdcard, right? Because /data will get formated if I wipe the device, I think.
Thanks.

Not entirely sure; I know in TWRP there's some advanced wipe thing with selections (cache, dalvik, system, something else, usb) and then there's a "Format Data" button.
wiping cache, dalvik, system, and factory reset it will not wipe your "media" partition, also known as your sdcard or internal storage. Doing the "format data" will wipe the whole device including your sdcard.

I finally wiped the device, tested the application I wanted to install and recovered without problems from the TWRP backup that hadn't been deleted. Now that I know that wiping the device solves the problem, I have to backup apps and data for every user, wipe again and recover only apps and data.
Thanks a lot.

Don't you have to disable all security passwords like pattern lock and fingerprints before making a nandroid or it won't work when you restore? I read that in the How to thread for the 6P. Wondering if this is true or not.

For example: My Nexus 6p is running chroma rom right now, if i back up the data partition can i restore that partition onto my new rom ( BeanStalk 6.02)?

Yes that would be true, you would have to disable any type of lockscreen security because it wont let you unlock your phone after restoring.

Which partitions do you backup and restore?
I don't feel the original question has been fully answered and explained.
The usual answer is: boot, system, data.
In the guide, section 4 that Heisenberg links however, vendor is added to the mix.
Remaining questions:
- Is vendor needed for usual backup together with boot, system and data. If so, why? What does it contain?
- What about the remaining partitions? Vendor image, system image. What do they contain and why do we not need them backed up?
---------- Post added at 01:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:39 PM ----------
Also, yes you can still get back into a backup with fingerprint lock still active. See this post:

Boot, system and data are fine just as it's always been. I've already done this and restored with no issues. Even with lock screen security. All you do is use file manager in twrp to delete "data/system/locksettings.db". If you know what you are flashing is going to actually write to a partition other than boot or system then yeah, back those up too. Suppose it wouldn't hurt to grab backups of each partition individually and store them on your pc to be on the safe side.

The only issue with not backing up and restoring the vendor partition, and the reason I include that in my guide, is if you have themes applied they will survive through the wipe and be carried onto the restore/flash, potentially causing compatibility issues and a failure to boot or a wonky/unusable system after boot.

Oh so that's the reason! Well thanks, then I know what to do! I'll include the vendor partition then just for safety. I already have a complete backup of all partitions except recovery and cache too so I'll just keep that safe somewhere just in case.

So what are other options such as system image?
Is it necessary to back it up? I just backed up the default ones

System.img is just that. An exact image copy of the system image in one chunk. So you would end up with IMG files. It's not necessary to choose the IMG options. Default options for boot, system and data is a complete backup.
Hi,
Coming from PureNexus, I wanted to give CM13 a try. Made a nandroid backup so none of my data is lost, and put that backup on pc. I installed CM13 which went fine. It stopped at the CM booting animation and did not go further, so I cleanflashed Purenexus to restore my backup later on. Now PureNexus won't boot either. I'm out of ideas to try, and I want to get my phone back up and running ASAP.
Can anyone help me with this issue?

When you clean flashed, did you also wipe system? If you did and you're still hung at boot, your best bet would be to flash the factory images via fastboot and start fresh.

Are you wiping properly (system, data, cache, dalvik cache) before installing a ROM? Are you making sure you flash the appropriate vendor image after flashing the ROM? When you made your backup which options did you check? And which options are you restoring?

What do you mean it's only wiping cache? Explain to me how you're doing the wipe. Also, when creating a backup (and restoring it) you should only be selecting system, data, boot, and vendor.
PS. You didn't answer my question about whether you're flashing the vendor after flashing the ROM. If you want help you need to answer the questions that are asked.

I'll keep that in mind. When I boot up TRWP, I wiped system, dalvik, data, internal storage and cache. After that I pushed CM13 through adb. That's where the problems started.
EDIT: I flashed the most recent vendor after I flashed the ROM.

Ok, you definitely don't need to wipe internal storage before flashing so don't worry about that part. Only system, data, cache, and dalvik cache. You said before only cache was being wiped, can you please elaborate on that?
Are you sure the ROM zip didn't become corrupt during the download? Did you check the MD5 to ensure that it didn't? That could be what's causing your problems. Also, what gapps are you flashing?
If you want to go back to Pure Nexus just to get your phone working you can just restore that backup, just make sure you only restore system, data, boot, and vendor.

I found your guide by googling, thanks for making that! Flashing the factory image worked, and I succesfully restored my backup. The only problem left is that it won't accept my pattern lock. I have used the same one for years across multiple android devices, so I'm absolutely sure I have the right pattern. Any way to bypass this?

You need to remove all security before making a backup because the security information is encrypted and doesn't get backed up or restored properly. You can delete some files using TWRP (see section 3 of my guide) in order to remove the security so you can get into Android. This will cause problems with Smart Lock though.

Hi. I accidentaly changed file system of data partition to EXT4 and now when I try to restore my backup I get a warning that the backup was done with f2fs file system. The problem is that TWRP is not showing up the f2fs option when I go to change file system menu. Any help?

I think you can restore the data anyway? I backed up my ext4 data partition, formatted it as f2fs and then restored the backup and it gave me the warning but it worked anyway. If it doesn't let you proceed, reflash TWRP and try again.

Yes i could restore it but it worries me that I can't keep the original stock filesystem. I never changed it and I would like to have it as it was, there must be a reason it is f2fs and not ext4.
