Hi folks,
I recently upgraded my rooted Galaxy S4 (I9505) from CM12.1 to CM13, so I now have Marshmallow installed. Before the upgrade I made a backup on my external sd card with TWRP 3.0.2. Upgrading to Marshmallow went smooth and so I made another backup after installing CM13.
Yesterday I tried to make a backup but the backup on the external sd card failed. I tried it at least ten times. Most of the time I had some errors but sometimes there was no error shown in the log but the backup files were not saved on the external sd card. I've attached the complete recovery.log, here is an excerpt from the log:

"Fehler beim Öffnen" is German for I guess "Error while opening…"
The sd card works in the way that I can put photos and music on it. It is mounted as follows:
Code:
[email protected]:/mnt/sdcard # mount | grep 2015-1707
/dev/block/vold/public:179_33 on /mnt/media_rw/2015-1707 type vfat (rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,uid=1023,gid=1023,fmask=0007,dmask=0007,allow_utime=0020,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro)
/dev/fuse on /mnt/runtime/default/2015-1707 type fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime,user_id=1023,group_id=1023,default_permissions,allow_other)
/dev/fuse on /mnt/runtime/read/2015-1707 type fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime,user_id=1023,group_id=1023,default_permissions,allow_other)

/dev/fuse on /storage/2015-1707 type fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime,user_id=1023,group_id=1023,default_permissions,allow_other
Yesterday I tried to change permissions on the sd card by setting write permissions like this:
Code:
[email protected]:/mnt # chmod g +w media_rw/
Nothing changed.
Furthermore I tried the app "SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD" to fix the permission problem. If I had read the description more carefully I would have saved some time. The app had no effect and said that it couldn't fix the permission problem so I uninstalled it immediately. Today I tried the Xposed module "Marshmallow SD fix" and gave permission for Nandroid Manager but that didn't help either. But that was what I expected because I think (!) that this has nothing to do with TWRP.
So my question is: What do I have to do to make TWRP backup my data on the external sc card?
Your help is very much appreciated. If you need further information just let me know.
Greeting, Jens
Whatever you do in the ROM won't have any effect on the recovery.
My suggestion is to make the backup on the internal and then move it to the external.
Okay, that would work but space is limited on the internal card.
I'm wondering why it worked with the first backup. So I hope there's another way to get it working directly.
Thanks, Jens

Are there any other ideas to get the backup working on the external card?
Maybe downgrade twrp?

I've tested with TWRP 2.8.7.0 with no success. It says something like:
Code:
E:dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p20 of='/external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/a19a120c/2016-09-12--07-30-26_cm_jfltexx-userdebug_6.0.1_MOB30R_251a6113e//boot.emmc.win' bs=2097152 cout=5
process ended with ERROR=1
E:backup file size for '/external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/a19a120c/2016-09-12--07-30-26_cm_jfltexx-userdebug_6.0.1_MOB30R_251a6113e//boot.emmc.win' is 0 bytes.
Looks like still the same error. Any other hints?

The only other option I have is to change the format of your microSD card.
Mine is vFAT, if I'm not mistaken, and it works great.

Hello.. I currently have PhireMod 6.3 installed on a SD card using these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=998861
I'm trying to add an IMEI to the system using these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1004102
I can generate the new frameworks.jar fine, but I cannot figure out a way to mount the /System directory as read/write. I tried downloading the Mount System RW app from the marketplace, but that did not fix it. Is this a problem because I'm running it off the SD card instead of EMMC?
I'd just my Windows IMEI Generator/ROM patcher program here.

So I don't know how to solve it. I try to read the SD in another phone and it reads OK without problem so SD isn't the problem, also I did format from Windows as FAT32 but still having the same problem, any help on this? It's possible it's a SW problem or it's HW problem? I'm freaking out
I have the same problem.
any solution?
I got the same problem, but I noticed my s off was now on too, I have the files to turn it back on from UNREVOKED through CWM or even flash back to stock image but I'm concerned this may brick my device as I'm not the most experienced user, any tips, knowledge or warnings before I try would be appreciated.
I'm having the same issue trying to reload my recovery mostly trying to get into recovery to instally my gummy rom. I cannot access my sd card via cwm 3.0.0.8 on my droid charge gummy charged 2.1 rom. Please help!
Ok, finally and after a deep, long, tedious Google search I found a solution, at least for me works and for now my memory and my phone are OK. Here is the steps:
1. If you have any recovery rename it to recovery.img and copy to the folder where you have fastboot.
2. Extract your SD and run this command:
Code:
fastboot.exe -c board_sapphire.disable_sdcard=0 boot recovery.img
3. Insert SD again
4. Run this command from adb shell
Code:
#mount /sdcard
Run as many times you need in order to get SD mounted.
This works for me so good lock for every of you that have the same problem as me in the past
Hi Xda members,
I'am running TWRP 2.8.3.0 everything seems to work fine except with my Micro sd.
I got acces problem to my external SD card, it look permission problems,
When i try to reformat the sd card i get this error:
E: Unable to Unmount '/external_sd'
E: Error changing file system
When i try to make a backup this one:
E: Unable to create folder: /external_sd/TWRP (errno=30)
E: Failed to make Backup folder.
In install i'am able to access to external_sd and view the files inside.
Here is my config:
S4 GT-I9505
Android 4.4.2
ROM: stock rom I9505ZHUFNL1
Rooted with CF autoroot
Recovery: TWRP 2.8.3.0
I tried the fix permission button in TWRP but it didnt worked.
I also tried to install Extsdcardfix-flashable.zip from this thread: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607215
Did some factory reset, reinstalling everything and this didnt worked.
Reformating the External sd via stock rom work.
I've been looking around the web trying to find some solutions but nothing do so far and i run out of ideas.
So if anyone have some ways to fix it i'll really enjoy it.
Thanks for your time,
Ankhaz

Thanks for your answer,
I tried with Philz touch recovery 6.23.9 - I9505 (cm_jflte)
When trying to backup to SD1 i get:
"Error while backing up boot image! "
When trying to format SD1 i get:
Could not format /storage/sdcard1
When i try to install Zip from SD1 i'am able to acces the card and view what's inside.
So exactly the same result than before with TWRP
So the problem still, i think its a permission problem but might be wrong.
Update:
I did buy a new micro sd too try.
Problem still exactly the same, so its not SD card hardware related problem.
If someone got the same problem or any clue. I'll really apreciate it!
Thanks!

Hello. I install CM7 with this guide on wiki cyanogenmod org (Install_CM_for_jordan)
I create 2 primary partition on my sd card: FAT32 10GB and Ext4 5GB
I have fresh installation, connect WiFi, google account and I install Link2SD.
Then i Try (re)create mount script in Link2SD(Plus) I got following error:
Mount script error
Mount script cannot be created.
mount: mounting /dev/block/vold/179:2 on /data/sdext2 failed: No such device
I don't know how to fix it. I searched on forums but I can't understand. Can you help me fix it step by step?
I really need Link2SD. I used it on my previous phone and work great.
How I should fix this?
Hi,
I think your header tells it all.
/data/sdext2 failed: No such device. You formatted your sd card with ext4 but link2sd is looking for ext2.
Have your tried to format the 2nd partition of your sd with ext2?
In my point of view 5GB for the link2sd partition is too much. 1 GB should be sufficient.
Regards, Gazorbeam
Hello guys, I have the same problem. Thanks Gazorbem for your advice, but app itself asks about the system that it will search for (user can indicate whether it is ext2 or ext4 etc.) I tried all options available (although I know that my partition is in format ext3) but problem still remains - app still can't mount this partition
