i've been using pdnet for 3g tether to my laptop but it's way too slow and disconnects on me every few minutes? anyone has a better suggestion? i tried wifi tether, it doesn't work with 3g internet
thanks
Wif tether works just fine for me its what I am using now .
Post in applications next time, and what do you mean it doesn't work? It works great with me. A bluetooth tether application is up and running too now.
i discovered, that it resets my connections (like jabber, etc) when the screen is off...

PDAnet? There's got to be a setting for that..or a way to keep the screen on.
i read that if you turn off the wifi on your laptop, the connection works better on pdanet.
i tried that, and ever since, i havent had any problems with it. the only problem is that now pdanet is now payware....
wifi tether doesnt work for me. i have a Rogers Dream rooted, installed wifi tether, and it just says "*(paraphrasing) unable to start tether"

Why the heck do you keep sending me Pm's when you have PMs locked out so I can't even fricking reply. I go to all the work to answer your question and then hit send only to get an error back saying Kevwo has Pm's Blocked.
" Admins" sorry for the rant, and OP, sorry for the thread hijack, its really hot and humid hear and this just took me from the edge of loosing my mind to jumping off the cliff and completely loosing it.
Well Kevwo, enough of your rant.
Here is the shortened version of what I typed up to reply to you.
I am not aware of any Apps to SD apps that work, I have installed several and nothing worked right. I guess we will have to wait till a real ROM can be flashed on the Dream, then we will have access to all the cool apps. Hell I can't even get WiFi tether to work and I needed it to work badly.
O/T Ramble
I am leaving on Friday to go Camping, I want to be able to get on line at the camp site, might even setup a live web cam feed for the site. (Its our Fiero Club Camping event)
lol sorry about that
i guess i should read the pop-ups
has anyone tried using an older version of wifi tether? instead of 1.51 i tried 0.97 and that seems tow ork
I'm not rooted and updated to ICS this morning. Brought my transformer to work with me since I was excited and was tethering to my phone via ad-hoc fine. I then decided to do a factory reset to clear up the tablet and do some optimization. Next thing you know I can no longer tether to my phone so now I'm stuck without wifi.
My tether network shows up in the available wifi list but when I try to connect it just saves the network but not connect. Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this?
There is no reason that a factory reset would block it from being able to connect to a ad hoc network. The only thing that I can think of is that you typed the password wrong but like I said there is no reason it shouldn't work.
I didn't set any encryption on the tether network, it's the only way I was able to get tethering working previously.
Interesting, maybe reboot your phone? Like I said, I really don't think a factory restore could do anything that would prevent this from happening.
I was worried about the tethering. The Prime guys lost it with ics and had to root to get it back.
Yes, I have tried restarting my phone a few times. I was originally using android-wifi-tether 3.1b11 but have also tried barnacle tether, both have the same results. I'm attempting another reset on the transformer now in case I screwed something up on setup. I backed up all my apps before resetting the first time so at least I can install them, but no network access.
Asus had previously fixed ad-hoc in the August OTA, but it looks like the new ICS OTA doesn't have that fix anymore. So, you might try bluetooth pan networking instead. I don't think any amount of factory resets will get your ad-hoc wifi back without actually reverting to a pre ICS install.
I was able to find a wifi tether profile that allowed me to put my phone into AP mode so it's now working without ad-hoc. Thanks for trying to help

Dude, PdaNet has a (new) version for ICS for free. It does bluetooth and more. You might want to check out.
Just fired up wireless tether, connected to it and browsed the web with no problems.

I came from Revolver. After the ICS update my tether had no issues. I use the app WiFi Tether.
The only thing I noticed is that ICS does not gracefully disconnect after I shut tether off. In fact, the wireless rings for signal indicator grey out but are all still present. After a while, I turned the tether app back on and had to dicsonnect/reconnect wifi on the tab. There was a message like something about "continued poor signal". After the standard off/on of wifi all was good.
Thanks, thats what I was using but I had a really old version. I guess I should update my apps more.
Since my phone finally updated to ICS (non-root) Foxfi's Wifi now works on my phone. I used the Bluetooth before the update and yes i know BT is better as it saves battery. Yet when i try to connect my N7 to my rezound it'll find it but it'll forever look for the IP address. Is this something normal or is there a work around to fix the wifi. I'd like to have both options if needed be. Thanks
Edit: Just tried it with my laptop & other wifi only cellphone and nothing.
Hey all,
So I have UDP with Verizon. Got my phone the other day and activated it before I inserted my VZW sim card. Tethering worked fine until today (after Droid-Life posted about it), and now it will work for a few minutes and then I lose internet connectivity on both the phone and hotspot.
To get around this with my previous Moto X 2013, I used the wifi tethering apk from here: https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ and then only allow one device at a time to connect. This app doesn't seem to work with Android L (or I can't get the settings right).
Is there anything else I can try? Or is there any way to limit devices with the stock tethering?
(edit)
Other info:
Phone is unlocked.
TWRP installed (phone tethered fine after TWRP installed)
Phone is rooted (same as above)
I installed Xposed today, started having issues. Uninstalled Xposed, still have tethering issue.
(edit2)
Wife's phone, a rooted VZW Samsung GS4 is also being flaky with wifi tethering. I'm guessing that it isn't my device tonight...

I have a similar issue but not quite the same. I am also on UDP vzw and the behavior that I get is that the hotspot connection to the Internet is barely usable at all. Some pages load, sometimes but often they timeout. But with all of this the connectivity on the handset itself is unaffected. I'm going to try a usb tether on my Mac with the HoRNDIS package soon to see how the speeds compare. Maybe it's just the wifi tether and sub will be okay?
There have been some that are specifically noticing DNS issues. Maybe that's where the root of the problem is.

Ever since I found out that VZW allows you to add the tethering package to your UDP line and not mess anything up, I bought it and have experienced zero issues. Before that, every few days I would have some bad DNS issues where google would work, but nothing else would. Now my phone is my ISP and I've had no issues.
My (current) network setup: phone (wifi tether) -> bridge computer (internet sharing) -> router (Asus AC66U) -> wired/wireless network.
I haven't tried the bridge computer as an actual network bridge as that caused some flakiness before... but that was when I wasn't paying for tethering. Eventually I'd like to use my phone as a 4g modem that is directly hooked up to my router.
Curious to know if the community is having tethering issues since going to Nougat.
Tethering does turn on and it does work to an extent but it'll either turn off whenever it wants or it'll simply stop serving requests. There is not a set amount of time for either before experiencing the issue. I'm pointing this issue directly at the tethering aspect as the phone will always browse and do anything as expected even tho the tethering clients are unable to. Even when the clients are unable to browse I can still ping the exact website that will not load. I can even curl those pages and get data back..
Here's what I've tried:
- Disabled adblocker on the phone
- Kept phone awake
- Connected to the charger
- Disconnected from the charger
- added net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to the build.prop
- Nuked and paved with different ROMs
Going to try installing a different tethering app to see if that works. UPDATE: This also produced the same results
I can connect to another 6p not running nougat and everything works as expected with the same computer so that rules out the computer.
Anyone else running into this issue? Anyone have a fix?
Thanks
What carrier are you on? Does hotspot work ok?

Verizon also using EX kernel. It's almost like some sort of cache fills up
Thank you!!! I thought it was just my phone hardware maybe. Having the same exact issue once I hit the official version of nougat. It didn't pop up until I believe thr 5th developer release as an issue. It really annoys me either streaming or online gaming it'll just cut out. I am really close to just going back to one of the developer previews that it did not occur on. Please anybody who can fix this issue or needs anything like a logcat, let me know.

What carrier are you on? Tethering can mean Wi-Fi, USB, or BT. I guess you are talking about the Wi-Fi hotspot because it's the most commonly used. My Wi-Fi hotspot is working fine on AT&T, although I haven't used it for gaming. Haven't heard back from OP, but I think he may be talking about Wi-Fi as well? You could try changing frequencies under advanced settings to toggle the hotspot to use 5Ghz instead of 2.4Ghz if you haven't tried that (and your equipment supports it).
I was having same issue also running latest PN, EX 4.04, radio/bootloader & vender.
This seemed to help but just started yesterday.
In Terminal Emulator, enter below code one by one:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
exit
------------------------------------------------------
Reboot
Now if I could figure out how to stop adding a network every time I connect to hotspot with cp when I turn hotspot off & back on.
I'm thinking this could me a Verizon unlimited thing since not many people have anymore & very few people have stated issues.
Update: The above is not going to cut it! Hotspot seems to hang on longer but still disconnects!
I have Verizon, and yes, I am speaking to*Hotspot tethering. I have this issue only on Nougat. When I use a*Marshmallow based rom it doesn't happen. I use my hotspot as my home internet (laptops, smart tv, tablets, smartphones) and all of them drop connection after random intervals (most times after an hour to few hours). Not until the DPs for 7.1 did a change in the way it failed happened. Before those DPs, it would shut off and the notification icon would disappear (hotspot actually off). After*the DPs for 7.1 started, the tethering would still be on (on the*6P) but no device would show that it was on (in range). I have to shut it off, then*turn it back on. I use stock, Cortex or PN mostly. Root or no root. I also do not use custom kernels unless they come with the rom, although I have tried a couple to see if it would fix it. It didn't.*I have always attributed it to either faulty hardware somehow or DOZE improvements that kicked in. The DOZE came to mind as it almost seems as the phone is trying to*get into deeper sleep. I don't know. Any help would be appreciated.
Same issues with pixel, some said it works others did not.

Yes for wifi tethering.
Well cannot seem to find anything on disconnect solving issues, posted solutions seem to be if tethering does not work at all.
Hope someone can solve.

Did you try toggling hotspot to use 5Ghz instead of 2.4?

Laptop I'm using only does 2.4.
Was never a problem with the HTC M8 on MM, just recently bought the 6P.
Thanks
Had another laptop that had that had a 2.4 / 5Ghz dual wireless card.
Holds wifi hotspot with no disconnects whatsoever, longest time connected was 2.5 hours.
I will have to settle for usb tether on the 2.4 laptop for now until the wiser ones can find cause.
Just ran into this issue on the 6p running 8.0 beta 3. Seem related to the data encryption of the wifi hotspot. Turning encryption seems to solve the problem. However, I would say that is not really a solution, unless you don't running unsecured hotspot.
Edit: Turns out it only helps. Not a solution. Still disconnects just not as often often.
