Not updating google hangouts? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So as some of you may have heard, google is removing the ability to merge hangouts and sms messages, for better or for worse. My question is will hangouts eventually stop working if i break its link to the playstore and never update the app, keeping the feature

Eventually? Probably, yeah. But when that'll occur? No idea.

Sounds like a good plan for now...

facebook 1.5 partial wakelock

How's your battery status after the last facebook update?
From what I'm seeing facebook is holding a partial wakelock for the whole time
Is this happening in any situation?
Removing the facebook account from the phone fixes the problem... but would like to keep it in...
now I'm trying with the notifications disabled...
FB has the highest partial wakelock use on mine, but it's not massive, it's bar is about 1/5 full.
but the timing is embarassing compared to other apps :/
to me it looked that the android system wakelock were very high too...
i'm trying to see if the notifications disabled it lowers down...
How can I check this?
*#*#4636#*#*
then select "battery history"
Or use Anycut to create a shortcut to the 'Testing' app.
same here.. uninstalled.
No problems here.
41 seconds total.
Although I would LOVE to be able to turn off the Facebook push notifications. Despite having disabled everything inside the FB app, they still get pushed to my phone, which drives me ****ing crazy.
I suspect having everything turned off would be why you have a very low wakelock?
Mine is very low. I set facebook to never check for updates since the last release added push notifications. I don't think polling for updates is necessary anymore. No clue why it even has the option still.

Status updates aren't pushed, I'm guessing that it'd fry the servers. So if you want your synced contacts to display their status in the contact popup you have to poll them.
Somehow the iPhone and Blackberry apps are able to use push notifications properly without frying anyone's servers. Email and SMS notifications can also be sent out instantly. I'm pretty certain there is no technical reason why the Android app can't work right.

The news feed updates don't get "pushed" to either of those devices. The polling frequency is for updating the news feed which you would want when using the facebook widget.
I'm not interested in wall updates getting pushed. Notifications get pushed to those devices, and that's all I expect from the Android app.
Newbie question, what is a wake lock and how does it drain battery?
killing the facebook app solved my problem (not only facebook where being very "active"... but also the "android system" was kept constantly awake!!)
in the usage history the system was basically never sleeping... running the whole time :/
as for now I started facebook again... and disabled the notification thing... let see what will happens...
I can confirm that disabling the notifications "fixed" the problem... no more continuos wakelock when app is started...
dunno if push is really working... (don't appear so... will see in the next days :/)

Yeah, probably.
The Facebook app is just atrocious. I hate it with a fiery passion. Basically the ONLY 2 reasons I have it installed are 1) Facebook/Contact picture sync and 2) Upload from gallery to FB.

turn off google messaging service?

I noticed that the messaging service is running full time and wondered if its even needed with the n7 WiFi version?
I just stopped the phone app. Will look in apps and delete but i would like to reduce the use of apps I'm not even using.
Here, a picture to see what I'm saying. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1ql7ydolU52MkM5X242bFduazQ/edit
From what I recall, that service powers the push-notification mechanism of Android. Killing it would break gtalk, market, gmail and no doubt lots more.

Hangouts is pretty much just a Google Talk replacement at the moment. It doesn't unify anything.

Well, it totally screws up the easy way of cross compatible situation that Gtalk provided with XMPP. So many Messengers on various Computer Systems, incl. Android and iOS could connect to a Gtalk account. Now thats all over. What has that to do with unifying ? Sounds more to me like "limiting".
I suppose, since Gtalk was a major part in Android, one that I believe cannot/could not be uninstalled (please correct me if I am wrong here), we can't uninstall Google Hangout now. Right ? Since if it replaces Talk, it must be a part of the System that can't be uninstalled. Or please tell me that its no problem to uninstall it ?
Any info is appreciated.
Thank you.

I don't like the fact that we can't see the online/offline status of the people in our friend lists anymore!

It's no problem to uninstall it. You can uninstall with titanium backup.

Thank you, that worked.
Does anyone know if Google will also disable the Gtalk Servers with the use for Gtalk compatible XMPP apps on for example PC or if that is still running a while ?

I uninstalled it with Titanium Backups. Now its gone. Can I go back to Gtalk again and if, will it next time be automatically updated with Hangouts again since Google wants to get rid of Gtalk ? Does anyone know if Gtalk (in general) still works as for the Servers, so I could use it on a PC with some alternate Messenger.
Any info on that is appreciated.

You can go back to gtalk, put the file back to the path, and reboot
When I updated gtalk to hangouts, PC termination had worked as usual.
I think automatically update of gtalk will be successful next time.

If I understand you correct, I could put in TALK again but next time (or soon) it will be updated automatically to Hangout again, since that is what Google will force on everyone. So there is no point in putting Talk back I suppose. I just hope they keep the XMPP Servers running for Talk to be used on other Systems like PC. So many nice apps that can be used with Gtalk. Pidgin, Miranda etc.

yes, you are right.
I also like XMPP Servers, but talk combine with google+ message, what a pity.
If you're on a computer, go to Google plus page and turn hangouts on, there is a green line under the picture of contacts who are online. My list of contacts that show are just frequently used ones though. I know this isn't the same but maybe it will show up in the app soon.
ya its a great design but really missing the simple facts.
GOOGLE if you're reading this, combine all the servers into one.
it is still called talk and still looks the same, however apparently I already have the hangout update... what can I do? I rebooted my nexus twice and talk is still there.
It doesnt look the same at all actually. Lol. if it looks the Same for you, it hasn't been rolled out to you yet. there is a phandroid article with a link to the app itself and you can just install it manually.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
well it still says talk up left... thanks, I might do it manually, can't wait even tough I never used google talk
---------- Post added at 05:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:56 PM ----------
finally, looks completely different. love it.
according to phandroid it will support sms in a future update.
I removed it completely. If I can't have Google Talk, I dont want that Hangout stuff at all. Google totally screwed up something great XMPP cross-platform stuff which no Google+ or Google Hangout can replace. Not everything wants to be done on a phone, tablet or Browser.

[Q] Stock Mail app crashing after root when loading new msg

I am having an issue with the stock email app.
No matter if its a Yahoo or Exchange email, when loading the new message from the notification window or the actual app short the app crashes and it says "unfortunately, email has stopped".
I then have to reload the mail app and then I can access the message just fine.
I am not sure what is causing this. I am pretty sure it was fine before rooting, so I am guessing it has something to do with that.
I am already removed all my accounts and deleted the Email apps, data and cache and it still happens when re-adding the accounts.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
I was getting FCs too. I just installed a different email app...

Hrm, wish I knew what the deal was. I tried it with each account, installed one at a time too. I dont think I have anything else that could be interfering with it. I have lightflow, but I haven't even configured email app notices yet.
Sort of glad to hear that it's not just me that this happens to.
I read about Force Closing the app then clearing the App Cache would resolve it.
I did that, but still ended up with the error. Then I remembered that I didn't re-boot after clearing the cache so now I'm waiting for another email to pop up with the notification to see if the app will crash again. *crosses fingers*
Edit:
Sent self email Exchange -> Gmail,....Generated error Bummer!!!
I'm having the same issues.
someone else reported that disabling the no security exchange in an app like "Note 2 Hidden Settings" found HERE caused theirs to crash.
edit:
oops, that should have been wanam settings not the Note 2 hidden settings
I just unfroze everything and re-sent myself an email and was able to open up the Email app with no problem. It must be something that was on that long compiled list here that was causing this issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2478589
Guess I'll be re-freezing a few apps at a time and send myself an email to see what app will crash Email. Fun times!

I did freeze a few of those, so maybe that is it. Must have been something I didn't turn off before root, then frooze with TiBu after root.
let me know what you come up with
I have your answer. I spent at least an hour finding which app causes it. Believe it or not its the magazine apps. Do not freeze or mess with the magazine apps and your Samsung email app will work perfectly

That was it! Thanks a ton. I wouldn't have thought the mail app had anything to do with magazine. Odd.
Weird,...I wrote a reply and it disappeared.
No matter. It was long winded anyways, and I ended up at a similar result.
Thanks for finding the answer stu, but wish I saw it prior to freezing/emailing one by one
Yep. Crazy huh. I have so many apps frozen and the stupid magazine app causes it. Also, dont forget to freeze SDM so you Dont get Verizon firmware updates

Done, and done!
Now to wait for a reply regarding whether or not the Pen Window/Multi-Window mod trip Knox,...someone mentioned that Xposed mod may trip it,...and now I'm all paranoid about seeing what that Xposed thing can do in case it messes with the counter -.-'
I have a million xposed tweaks enabled including multi app to get all apps. I just went to download mode for you and I am still perfect with Knox. 0x0
Thank you kind, sir.
My request in the other thread was glanced over and I didn't want to re-bump the post since it hadn't been that long yet, but was anticipating it getting buried in the on-slaught of posts discussing what to do with Root.
I'm not exactly sure what to expect when I get Xposed on there, but I've read numerous positive things about the software, so I'm excited to know I can check it out
Thanks again!
Check it out but go in with baby steps. Just install wanam and notify clean to start. Some others were buggy for me.

I can confirm that freezing the magazine app causes Exchange email to FC. If you look at the permissions in the Exchange app it shows one of them to be for magazine. Thats how I figured out it might be a problem and I unfroze it. Bam! no FC.
Thank you so much!
thanks a ton! I was having the same problem with FC on my stock email app. I was freezing apps through Titanium Backup and since I switched over to Nova Launcher, I thought it useless to have the My Magazine app running... oh well.
cheers!
Thanks a bunch

[Q] Notification Problem GS4 At&t

Hi im new to xda and I had a problem with notifications . I seem to get no notifications at all, i have looked around the internet and I found out it had something to do with my google account. They suggested i remove the account then sign in again. I did this, I got my notifications but, I only get it when the account is removed. As soon as i sign back in i get no notifications besides sms. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it. I need my google account for the play store contacts etc. but, I want my notifications.(rooted on stock)
Sounds as if you have a 3rd party app that is controlling your notifications, my problem with this is how can you possibly get notifications with no google acct active? Now that is strange.
