These are the screen calibration codes for Xperia devices taken from the Xperia X Performance, used for Qualcomm devices from Snapdragon 800 and newer.
(There are no documentation on if it's compatible with the the Snapdragon 400, if you have official/trusted sources please link)
How to use:
First go to build.prop in /system/build.prop and make sure these lines are present (write them if none). Make sure there is an empty line after the last line of the build.prop, save and reboot:
Code:
# Assertive Display
ro.qcom.ad=1
ro.qcom.ad.calib.data=/system/etc/ad_calib.cfg
@MusterMaxMueller says here that
Code:
ro.qcom.ad=2
so y'all can try that as well.
Download the attached zip, extract the ad_calib.cfg file and place it (or overwrite if there's already one) into /system/etc then set permissions to 644 / rw- r-- r--.
Edit: If your phone resolution is not 1280x720, look for Frame_height and Frame_width and adjust them to your own. (Found by This Guy)
Edit1: Thanks @KbaB.BroS for the word wrap info
Edit2: A flashable zip if y'all prefer doing it the easy way: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67364182&postcount=34
Edit3: I recreated a wallpaper from the Lumia screen test, you guys can try it out, especially the SD800 holders. As usual go out in the sunlight and go crazy, people will just think you're a random Pokemon GO player.
What Assertive Display does in a nutshell: Saves power by adjusting pixel colour brightness rather than backlight. You must use it with Automatic Brightness for it to produce results.
Why it probably would not work on devices not using Snapdragon 8** and Snapdragon 652:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63514689&postcount=112
There is something called a placebo: Something that is given to try to satisfy a person who has not been given the thing they really want, so you might be seeing "improvements" because you believe it does.

Also don't forget if you install assertive display on any other Xperia device you'll need to change the frame width and height values so that they match your own device or it doesn't work properly I.e. My M2 is 540x960 instead of 1280x720 you should notice a difference especially in white colours. It's also only version 1.3 the same as the z5 has though not sure if they've tweaked the values at all.

I think I know what the issue might be, when copying directly from XDA with the phone and then pasting it in ad_calib.cfg, everything gets cluttered up so I had to separate each new line before saving and rebooting. However, when reverting back to the original ad_calib.cfg for my device there were more lines I had to separate it seems. Going to try it from the PC instead and see how it goes.

What did you set the frame height & frame width to? 3840*2160 or 1920*1080 cause I'm also using the Z5P & want to try this out.

Assertive display is mentioned twice in build.prop as here below:
# Assertive Display
ro.qcom.ad=1
ro.qcom.ad.calib.data=/system/etc/ad_calib.cfg
And
# Assertive Display
ro.qcom.ad=1
ro.qcom.ad.calib.data=/system/etc/ad_calib.cfg
ro.qcom.ad.sensortype=2
Does this need to be edited?

Hello friends!
I'm new here, but I bring a novelty that can cheer us, the owners of the Z1!
It is known that the Doomkernel V11 allows you to calibrate the display of our Z1 and this together with the White Balance, can greatly improve the display quality.
What we need?
1 - Unlocked bootloader
2 - Root
3 - V11 Doomkernel
4 - KitKat
Step 1: Set the White Balance with RGB values to your liking, I use 255 for everything;
Step 2: Install Faux123 or Pimp Z1, so you have access to calibration setting of the display.
Step 3: Set the RGB values in one of the APPs cited above (I prefer the Pimp Z1) to between 70 and a maximum of 150, the choice you prefer
And voila!
The display loses the yellow dye, gets saturated colors and angles of vision far superior!
Sure we lost a bit of the maximum brightness of the display.
Do your tests and come back here to comment!
Thanks all!
(Forgive my bad english!):good:
So without DooMLoRD v11 kernel is not possible the calibrations? Withe Balance only..

Good point man! But if you set de white balance to 255 for all, you'll have some more brightness, wihtout losing the colors and viewing angles! Try it!

The Sony's TFT isn't bad at all. It's just a matter of calibration. We have some TFTs in the past like Xperia Ion, Xperia TX and Xperia V, all having good calibrations on the display.

First of all, you shouldn't just change to an arbitrary resolution like that. You need it to scale by an integer number - 720p to 1080p means a scale of 1.5x, which will result in a bad quality image. Consider going to 540p instead - this means it'll be stretched horizontally 2x, and artifacts will be less visible. I'm unsure about battery improvements - upscaling will take place regardless so it may not be worth it because no proper testing has taken place. I'd instead consider using greenify, running an AOSP ROM without gapps (google play services are a huge battery drain) and other solutions to improve your battery.

There is no way to change the resolution only the display scale, and that's what this setting does
You can make it even smaller (or bigger) by setting a custom display scaling. Enable developer options -> then find a setting called smallest width. Then your custom value in it. For example I use 500. bigger values will make the screen show more content(make everything smaller)

if you don't care abt stock appps.. root and change the build.prop thats the best option.
Try messing with the DPI. You can find some apps on the market that edit this value for you
can reducing resolution improve 3D gaming performance? like more fps. for example always get more than 30 fps which was not possible with high resolution.

if you're not getting more than 30fps on games I'd recommend you to check the settings. turn VSync off, and if that still doesn't help just lower some setting.
You can get more FPS by reducing the resolution but it's a headache, a bunch of stuff breaks until you restore to stock resolution and restart the phone.
Newer games have a resolution slider

Yes of course. If you lower the resolution (NOT DPI) the games will render at that lowered resolution, giving a performance boost. After change of resolution you should change the DPI as well so the icon, menu and app sizes arent too big or too small

Does the screen look noticibly sharper after this?
Just wondering if worth the effort/trade off in battery life
I must say that I'm a bit skeptical about this. The screen has a specific number of pixels, in the XA1 case 720 x 1280, and it is not possible to increase with setting a value in Android. Lowering the value is possible since then the software can count several pixels as one (but usually it does not look that good).
In the GSMarena review they use a microscope to look at the pixels and sure they don't count them but I think after looking at so many screens they would have notice if the pixels was so small that the screen was a 1080 x 1920 screen instead.
If you saw my old phone, you too would be happy with the current resolution.
Why pump it up. Uses your battery quicker

Yes you r right. but the point is you can view youtube with FullHD setting. and you will get more space, also UI like tablet for some app if you want
I use these settings :
adb shell wm size 480x850
adb shell wm density 240
in settings, display, use the smallest size of font.
you can use too but it's blur :
adb shell wm size 360x640
adb shell wm density 180
I tried this out and my batterylive isnt affected. But I'm not able to take a screenshot anymore
1. Probably not the best idea to publish a video with your pirated movies and MILF porn clearly visible
2. How could this be possibly be... possible? Unless Sony has built in a 1080 display and lowered the resolution via software (why would they?!), I call complete bull****.
What you're changing is what the phone tells YT it is capable of. So you're using more data and also more battery for no visual improvement whatsoever. It just doesn't have more pixels.

In case of Youtube it helps, because videos are encoded with very low quality to save space and bandwidth.
It always help to use higher resolution of video than screen has resolution anyway. I do this on ma PC for couple of years now.
On phone screen is so small it makes little but still noticeable difference, but i don't care about it, i want battery life especially when I watch YT while travelling.
EDIT:
I've checked the screen with good old cardboard.
It is 720p and android probably is downsampling 1080p to it if You change the resolution.
So in conclusion other than 1080p in Youtube You only waste Your battery life.
If You want 1080p in Youtube, get modded app.
Anyway it is interesting gimmick, but with no real purpose.

Wich Resolution is best? 1080x1920, smaller or bigger?
Let's begin ?
Edit:
My settings are: Resolution = 1440x2560
View Mode = Medium
Font size = Normal
But not very happy with these...
i use FHD with 560DPI, it causes some issues in certain apps, but the phone looks MUCH better with much more content filling the awesome 5.9 screen
I use Dpi 400 .
I assume you have to be rooted to change the dpi? Also would improving the density make it better for VR? Less obvious pixels and sde?

No need to be rooted to change dpi. You can use adb commands

End how to change Resolution on mate 9.I have 1920x1080 native

Easy Dpi Changer on Play Store can do the trick.
i must have root on my phone to change resolution with Easy Dpi Changer?
I believe you can change it in developer options. No need to be rooted. Change smallest width.
THX.
