I tried looking in the forum for any info on the status LED next to the speaker on the front side but I don't see any posts on this. Is this LED supposed to flash or do something? On my HD it has never worked? Is it supposed to work?
I remember on my Artemis it would flash green for good reception, blue for bluetooth and red if the battery was low.

I may be wrong but i was under the impresion that this was a sensor rather than a LED.
No, that's entirely correct, it is the light sensor. The LED is in the power button.
the status led is on the power button on the top right hand side of the blackstone...the place u highlighted is a sensor as what scotia has point out..
I think that it is a proximity sensor used to blank screen when you put the phone on your ear to talk.
It's actually the light sensor used for when you have automatic display brightness enabled. When it's dark, it turns down the brightness... And when it's a sunny day it cracks it up. I am not sure whether it's used to blank the screen during a call... This seems to happen after a period of time has elapsed.

ok thanks for the info.
So does the power LED on the top side flash any color to show the status of the reception or does it only light up orange when it charges?
Thanks.
doesn't do anything for reception..although mine flashes green hen I have a message/email/reminder
pity though, a decent LED to show such things was probably high on everyone's wishlist
No, the HD is perfectly unobtrusive. On my last PDA the LED had to be tweaked to stop flashing.
Too bad this isnt a LED diode Since I got on my Diamond a light notification (on the bottom of device)... when I recieved new sms... now on HD there is no way I can figure do I have new sms or notification unless I turn the screen on. The only hardware flaw by mine opinion
When its lying down, I agree with you. Then I have to turn on the screen. However when its lying next to me I'm usually not in a place were I can't use my phone, so the sound is on anyway.
I actually think its quite good the LED is on the top, it's easelly visible when the phone is in my pocket. I just have to pull the phone up a little and look down to see the LED (no need to get it out and turn the screen on). I like it on the top, nice and discreet, and not anoying me when I'm looking at the device while using it.
Perhaps a combination would be nice? Front and top That would sattisfy most people I guess...
How can I replace the lightbulb in my HTC Universal? I didn't really use this feature much unless taking photos (which never turn out anything but grainy and blurry for me), however, I finally discovered VJCandella, and now I have found out that the bulb is broken (I'm just assuming here that it is a xenon flash bulb, or is it an even brighter LED than normal? LEDs usually don't ever die).
I want to replace this bulb to use VJcandella, but I don't know where to start looking, any help would be greatly appreciated.
I wonder if we can replace it with something else, for example a blue color LED, a motor, or something.
Is there anybody who can check the voltage and the current on the place of the flash led?

Check out the wiki... see the Service Manual for the Uni
An alternative:
Buy a 1W bright LED from eBay and that should be ok...
regards
above the screen at the top left it looks like led's but we all know thats not what they are.
proximity sensor... One thing it does lets say your on a call the screen will go to sleep, when you move the phone from your face it will turn back on... pretty darn cool
The other is a ambient light sensor.
i was an early adopter of the Atrix and i've noticed that ever since i've been on a gingerbread ROM, the LED won't come on while the screen is still on. this is extremely annoying since it used to do this on Froyo, and i've even tested it in Handcent and it says our phones won't allow it.. has any one else experienced this?
Let the lightflow.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
Lightflow will alow the LED while the screen is on in root mode but then it only does half your colors for some reason..
I only use 4 colors. It works for me screen on or off. Except when testing. Screen has to be off.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
Funny, cause i don't recall the led EVER blinking when the screen was on. I mean... why would it have to? If the screen is on, you more than likely have the notification bar right there to tell you what's going on.

I don't remember that either. (LED staying on when you turn on the screen)
The only thing that is different for me is when I was on original stock Froyo compared to the update afterwards.
The original stock kept the LED on forever, and the update definitely shortened that. I used to like looking on the nightstand to see if the LED was on, now it kinda defeats the purpose of it...

well maybe you don't get enough notifications to notice but it actually makes plenty of sense to blink while its on if for example you are playing a full screen game with haptic feedback turned on and you can't discern a text vibration from the game and you'd like to know if you got a text
I've been having some issues with brightness, I've seen a video where someone puts a cloth over the front camera and sensors and the phone goes dimmer, but in my case my phone does the exact opposite, see my phone has one of those flip cases with a window to see your messages or notifications, when the front is flipped off the screen it's goes dim even when off auto and at full brightness, and when the case overs the front it goes to the brightest it can go like it should, and I have no idea what's going on or what I should do.
