A couple of weeks ago my Nexus 10 started shutting down after being on sleep for a while. Really annoying having to boot it up every morning.
Is anyone else seeing this problem? Is there a fix? I don't think it's a setting that's causing this.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
That is probably a sleep of death. Which if that is the case then it isnt exactly shutting down, just getting locked up and requiring a reboot to get it working again. The causes of his can be:
Too low CPU voltage
Too low GPU voltage
hotplugging is turned on for your CPU governor (some tablets dont like this feature)
severe bug in your ROM or kernel
Mine did this and I tried to troubleshoot it for 2 months before I gave up and RMAd it. New unit does not do this. View my profile posts if you want all the gory details.
I think you should RMA.
I have the tablet since December, this only started happening now
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
But have you installed a custom kernel? Or ROM? Did you change anything in the last week? Did an app update in the past week?
Stock here, No root or custom rom. I did the 4.2.2 upgrade recently.

Hello Friends,
I wish to gather as much info as we can about the I9500 that are heating......because I was informed by someone at samsung that the devices manufactured after june have a revised PCB....which eliminates the overheating and battery problem.......I got my I9500 on 14th aug but in Antutu it was reching 85 degrees hence I will be getting a replacement tomorow....
Please use *#2222# to find out the HW Version : The defected ones (I assume not confirmed yet) are REV 0.6 because my friend has the same rev and his phone heats up as well........So if we succeed in getting more and more details we can go to samsung svc and ask them to atleast replace the motherboard....Cheers......
Heres What we need
Date Purchased :
Date Manufactured on the box :
HW Ver :
How hot does it get :
Does the heating affect battery life :
I dunno about 9500, but i am using 9505 and it was hot when i got it.
Ever since i switch to this kernel with proper undervolt, it doesn't run hot anymore.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284252
Maybe ask the guy if he have a port for 9500
Use wheatley governor (huge improvement to reduce heat since it doesn't bump all the way to max cpu all the time).
My battery life nearly doubled, can last 15-20 hours easy depending on usage.

Hi. mine is REV 0.6 and i bought it on June 12th. when i first got it it heated for no reason after 5 minutes of light use, but i never checked the degree. but after an ota update. the issue is gone and at most extreme conditions it reaches 70-73 degrees.
That's great let's see what happens after I get the replacement

honestly, if your problem is only the heat, i am pretty sure a better cpu governor would solve your issue. lets face it, these phone will get hot, running close to 2ghz, quad cores with NO active cooling... even my desktop cpu gets around 45c with liquid cooling man...
i am sure the temperature is an issue using all existing governor (except if you use powersaver or conservative, but is slow), but the wheatley does a good job keeping the phone smooth despite staying at the lower end of the cpu speed as much as possible..
i got my S4, eventhough we have triangle away, i never planned to return it anyway, i'd just deal with the heat problem, in fact, at the beginning before i even discover the new kernel, i just manually reduce the max cpu speed to 1.6Ghz, and that solved the heat problem.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain things.....now the issue i have is i can manage normal heat or for that matter heat which is above avg as well...the only scary part is my phone reaches 85 degrees most of the time.....it doesnt behave like an octa core.....its just like a a15 quad core and the heat is very very high......

As I have a I9500 if I root the device my warranty will be gone as samsung people will reject the same because i rooted it.....also on the stock rom I am getting less than 3 hes of screen on time......hence requested for replacement....as I do not have the option of rooting the device till triangle away is available for I9500.....

Rev 0.6 here. Spectacular battery life 5-6 hours screen time. Overheat issue is "almost" gone for me. Atleast the heat is not enough to bother me while browsing and general use. Heavy gaming makes the phone quite hot though, out of the comfort zone of placing the top of the phone in your hand.
Purchased my S4 in June. Had horrible overheat issues, hickups, restarts, battery level suddenly jumping to low followed by a restart.
Every single one of this issue got solved by the firmware update. Latest MG5 (Indian). So please update to this one if you haven't already (Flash it) and report your temp, general battery life etc with us.

Yup Been MG5 since Day 1 and have done multiple factory resets still the temperature issue exists even the svc confirmed that the heating I have is a hardware issue,,,,,
*********If anyone from india recently bought the S4 they have a offer going on wherein 1 screen replacement will be done for free by samsung till the device is under warranty you can call samsung cust care and give them your purchase date they will confirm if the device is eligible for a free screen replacement!!!!! So for me no more screen guards needed,.....
I am running MG5 (Indian) firmware stock, no root, hw rev 0.6. I did some measurements today with cool tools
Ambient temp : 29°C
Idle processor temp: 37°C
Light task processor temp: 43-50°C
Web browsing heavy pages: 45-60°C
Playing sonic 4 ep1 : 59-67°C
Antutu processor temp: 70-92°C
Antutu score: 27.896
Pretty standard temp behaviour I guess. The overheating in my phone seems to be the inevitable one that comes with such a powerful (and unfinished) processor.
If someone gets a new hw rev we could compare at a given conditions (ambient temperature, apps running etc..). It might not be very representative, but it could be fun.

Rev0.6
Bought last June 14..
No "overheat issue."
Heavy gaming makes phone hot but not to the point of overheating. Also after flashing a new rom it gets hot on first reboot (just wait for the rom to settle)
Every smartphone gets hot in a certain situation and thats pretty normal..

Best battery stats of my s4
Got 2x 7 houra screen time
But usually my usage is between 5.5 hours to 6.5hours screen time
I think you really got a bad device and not a batch defect. Good thing they will replace it for a new one.
I suggest update your device yo latest firmware or root and install custom rom and kernel.
Eventhough we have less available rom and kernel for now, the good thing is that they are all very nice and devs are great.
Hey all.
Had my N4 since the beginning but recently I'm getting quite an annoying problem.
When on 3G, as soon as I start using the phone, you can feel it getting warm but after about 10 mins of light use, its actually burning hot! It only happens on WiFi though.
I contacted Google and they made me factory reset which had no luck. Now there sending me a brand new N4 to replace it
Anyone had this issue before? I've never had any issues with my N4 before and I've had it since the beginning
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4
It's normal. Under LTE heat is noticeably lower, so use that if you have access.

i love these my n4 gets hot threads..
to start off, what battery and cpu temps does your phone reach? dont say it feels hot, feel isnt an accurate way to measure temp, its not a way to measure temp at all actually. feel will only give you if it feels warmer or cooler the body part you are doing the feeling with. and burning hot i highly doubt, unless your hand is ice cold. so, post your battery and cpu temperatures and we can go from there.
I have a question, I had nexus 6p once, and it does get in bootloop and die without solutions.
Now i'm about to buy another, and Im afraid do get this issue again.
i dont wanna lose money again.
I've had two. One got the red light of death. The other is still ok.

My Nexus 6P is still working fine, no bootloop of death or early shutdowns, bought it in November 2015.

have some possibility to prevent or predict what nexus will get this problem?
I recently bought a used 6P. It was manufactured in Nov 2015, and judging by the battery degradation (shutdown at 10-20%, SOC was about 2-3 hours at best, it would heat up quite a lot under normal usage, etc) I can guess that that the phone was used quite a lot, so heavy usage will probably not result in bootloop of death. After changing the battery, things got A LOT better - barely warm even when running Asphalt 9, SOT is about 4-5 hours and no more dying at 15%.
My guess would be that the battery has nothing to do with bootloop, as many people seem to believe.
An interesting thing that I noticed is that the 4 Cortex-A57 processors that are supposed to run at 2 GHz are actually running at ~1.56 GHz, while the other 4 A53s are running at 1.55 GHz, like they're supposed to. In order to fix a bootloop'd 6P you have to disable these 4 big processors so... ??? My theory is that this big cluster is causing the bootloop, and to *prevent* this bootloop you would have to underclock them to max 1.6 GHz.
Now, the big mistery is WHY is my phone underclocked, I'm pretty sure the previous owner didn't do it, as the phone is not even rooted.
If you buy a used one, I'd strongly recommend a new battery. It's easy to do yourself, just pay attention to the instructions. I recommend ifixit's batt.
Otherwise, just stay away. If you do buy, just install a kernel that will let you run the big core at 1.5, that way you get no shutdowns

What are you using to measure the CPU frequencies? Just because it's not that speed when you look at it doesn't mean it's not running at that speed. Are you using an app that's keeping a log of what speeds are in use?
The max speed will be listed at what it can currently go to. It will be all over the map and is not a good indicator of what to look for.

Basically, since the 4 cores fix is mostly temporary and most nexus 6p still die soon or late after this fix, I don't think it is the issue... For me bad soldering, as the bad soldering that caused lots of lg phones in this period, including the nexus 5x, to die of bootloop is the issue of our nexus 6p.
As the title states already hating this phone and I still have like 700 left to pay on it. It Overheats atleast 2 times a day if not more. Can't seem to handle much I only live in the UK. I would hate to be somewhere where it is hot all the time.
Wow that's bad glad I don't face these issues. My device had been running smoothly from day one and no overheating even with 35°C and up.
Do you mind sharing what you're doing with your device when it overheats?
When being used in my car and when playing Pokémon go usually. I know it could be classed as high usage.
But I have never had this problem before. And definitely not while in use in my car being charged using maps and music etc
Better make sure you don't overheat yourself while driving. My device doesn't get a chance to overheat while navigating as it is positioned in front of the air-conditioning keeping it nice and cool.
I've had overheating in the past with my Note 9 but haven't seen it one my OP8Pro yet.
However it might have something to do with the latest firmware as my device does get warmer than before and battery drains much faster.

I have exactly the same issue as described. Only solution I found to 'lower' a bit the occurences of getting this annoying message that the phone is overheating, as well as a severe throttling of the screen and CPU, is to force the phone to use specific CPU frequencies depending on what app is running (scenarios). I do this through Franko Kernel Manager, but maybe some other apps could offer the same functions. I do love that phone but this overheating issue is seriously getting on my nerves too...

What OS you running mate? Where's it from ? What model?
It's more than likely that a particular region / model / firmware will be having more issues than others.
On a personal note my device has remained cool even after playing Dreamcast games via a Bluetooth controller for over an hour. Just doesn't overheat, the 865 has great efficiency which was one of its plus points over the 855. Probably the CPU / GPU has an imperfect contact with your heatsink.
If that's the case then it'll progress and will end up a lot worse, so an RMA would be the only option, be sure to get the tech to make some notes.

Normal unrooted stock. OnePlus UK OnePlus 8 Pro.
It seems to run hot to the touch most of the time.
I am having the same issues.
I got the phone two days ago, still not facing these issues.
I've been driving my current car for almost 2 years now. I've used a magnetic phone holder on an AC vent and have turned that vent off ever since. For 2 years I've charged phones will using Google Maps/music streaming with no issues. Phones include Galaxy S10, S20U, Note 10, OP 7, etc. with no issues. This OnePlus 8 Pro overheats very easily and I've resorted to actually turning the AC vent on in order to avoid it.
I'm not sure what happened, but the 8 Pro has had some serious QC issues.
Maybe a factory reset would help with overheating issues, a total wipe. I used fastboot erase userdata while in the bootloader mode. I had a couple of issues and after resetting, they seemed to go away.

It's been 35C + in the UK this past week and my phone has remained cool throughout, no problems whatsoever.
The 865 is a great chip, it's extremely efficient unless you get a bad one which could happen with any SOC, even Intel and AMD have some bad eggs. It happens unfortunately.
Same as some chips overclock better than others

Nope. On its own. I have to blow the aircon on the phone to keep it cool when navigating. Also using the phone this week with my drone I couldn't see the screen because it kept on overheating and decreasing the brightness. Never happened once on my 7pro.

I haven't had that issue in any way, was playing Dreamcast and Wii games for a few hours earlier, didn't even feel warm.
GPS can be a drain on power, depends on a few things though.
But turning off like that? I would suggest that's a fault. Probably an imperfect contact with the heatsink.
Just a thought but are you running QHD and 5G.
I don't use either.. try turning to 4G and FHD, might be why?
If not then I'd see what OnePlus or your supplier can do about a replacement. Really need to get the point over that its not a software issue, probably perform a factory wipe just to be sure prior to sending anything off to them.
Shame that it's happening to be honest.

The phone dims the display when it starts to overheat and a message pops up saying it's overheating. Jerry rig shows two dollops of heat sink paste on the CPU so I suspect OP know then have problems, they've also decreased the max brightness after an update most likely to counteract the overheating. It's happened with my two 8pros so I doubt it's a manufacturing ,most likely the SOC naturally runs warmer or the design doesn't dissapate heat effectivity. Doesn't bother me massively but it does happen.
