Keyboard getting "sticky" - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey people,
This is an odd one for me. I'm finding that periodically, and I'm not even sure how often, my keyboard seems to get (the only way I can describe it) sticky. So when I'm tap tap tapping through a message, I'll notice that some keys will start displaying the character that occurs when you long press the base character. So on the Google keyboard which I'm using at the moment, if I try to tap "QWERTYUIOP" for example, sometimes I may get "QW3TY7OP" because the "E" acted as if I was doing a long press, and by the time I was tapping "R" it was entering "3" before catching up. Etc.
This also seems to happen on other keyboards I have tried for long enough. I say "long enough" because it probably takes weeks from it's last restart to do this. And when it's doing it, it's not constant. It's not enough to make me throw the phone through a window. It just happens for a bit, then goes. It will happen more and more if I don't reboot the phone, but it's a very gradual process.
Other tap targets, icons and widgets, never seem to act like I'm long pressing during periods when this is happening with the keyboard. I think I had seen this on my Nexus 5 but had assumed it was they Swype keyboard as other people had been having some problems too.
Any ideas???

do you ever restart your device?

I use the SwiftKey keyboard.
As soulfly3 asked 'do you ever restart your device?'
I find that if I leave the app running for long periods of time with a lot of typing it will start to lag and/or stick as you call it. I have fixed this a few times just by closing the SwiftKey app and restarting it, but I normally go for a full restart of the device as I have no idea how many other apps have been open for too long. Plus it's generally a good idea to give your battery a rest every once in a while

I do reboot the device, but not because of the keyboard. I don't often have much cause to reboot unless I'm updating, flashing stock images, rooting, or something similar. So by that nature, the phone is rebooted at least once a month (to apply monthly security updates from Google).

once a month!? jesus.
Longest Ive gone without rebooting is 2 days. Do I need to do it? No. But Ill tell you what.... I dont get any of the issues those most report, and im certain it's because of this.
honestly, for something that takes 10seconds to do, I dont know why everyone doesnt do it. really flushes out those bugs many complain of

On the other side, it's arguable that if you have a device that needs to be rebooted or refreshed every two days, it's broken.

it doesnt "need" it, I just do it as a preventative measure.

I have the same issue, I do believe it started after the 6.0.1 upgrade. Occurs regardless of reboots. It is pretty annoying.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Same issue
I've got exactly the same issue and have tried custom keyboards, ROMs and kernels to no avail!
I've seen google asking for people to try safemode but who can run their phone in safemode for a week waiting for it to happen!

Same here. I'm sad to see that there's no fix other than a reboot.

this!! it happens to me every day.. very frustrating!!
tried a couple of keyboards.. same...
i restart daily so its not the issue..
i saw in some page it can be the vibrating function... (try disabling it and see if this dissapears ) i just did but i dont know if it will happen as i just did

How serious is your device freezing/hanging problem?

The title says it all. This is a survey to gauge the magnitude of the problem among the early adopters of Touch HD.
Please cast your vote only after you have AT LEAST 1 WEEK of experience using the device.
Thanks and cheers.
Mine hangs quite often, when typing SMS very fast. Also it hangs constantly, when browsing in landscape mode with opera. Very, very annoying.

Tried hard reset? Tried reflashing the ROM? Tried getting a replacement?
Mine hangs often but I can live with it as it is my secondary device and I don't use it much.
Mine hangs occasionally but i found most of the times was "Active Sync" fault, simply close it and it stops hanging
So far, more than 50% of you are saying it never hang even once. This is amazing! I had never thought in my widest dream that it is so good.
I've mine since the 5th of November... so it's about 3 weeks today... and I’ve already forgotten where is the Soft Reset button...
I think that you should include in the poll, another option, something like the 2nd and 3rd options, but that it bothers us.
Since we paid a lot of money for HD and it does not work as it should, it is really annoying and it bothers us.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortuntely, posters are not able to make this change. Can our moderator help?
Never
I clicked 'never hangs'.
Strictly not true. Have found that if CorePlayer is open, and i try to manually switch off, it won't. Subsequent attempts also fail (even after closing CP), and the only fix is to press the power button a few seconds and turn off. (i guess this is one 'below' a soft-reset but dunno).
Also strange is that if it auto-shuts down with CP open, generally it turns off, but when turned on CorePlayer has no video, and must be closed and opened to fix.
i guess the 2 issues are related to Coreplayer's incomplete Qtv driver - and will be soon fixed.
Else has never hung (2 weeks use) which is brilliant compared to my last PDA (ipaq) - tho' it was often the fingerprint reader that hung. btw i would pay more for the HD with biometric security. i think this is needed, given the amount/type of data most people have on their devices it should nearly be illegal to make 'em without .
I've select never, however I've had a couple of application issues... 1 with network settings and the other with a 3rd party application which both caused application crashes.
How are you defining a hang? WinMo crash screen (application dies) or device becomes unusable and requires a soft reset? My phone has never crashed that bad I've never had to reset it.

Freezes. Not responding to user action, or so slow and unuseable that it requires a soft reset.
So far, one out of four are reporting that freezing occurs frequently, but more than 90% of us are not bothered by this. Any more vote?
Interesting poll!
But i have to mention, i'm absolutly sure the freezing problem is on every HD. It's just a question of the installed software, the running applications and their kind of use.
If i play the whole day SPB sudoku i have not to report any freezings and i'm lucky. But the HD turns me crazy while writing the whole day SMS with permanent freezes.
Just a joke!
surely all these freezing problems will be fixed once we get cooked roms?

On my Athena, the freezing problem largely disappeared with ROM updates from HTC, but the cooked ROM were far more stable.
So, I believe the same will happen here.
I've had mine for a week now and get regular freezes - mostly when using opera and particularly with opera in landscape mode. Also get freezes when typeing emails although these usually sort themselves out if I'm prepared to wait a while. Every now and again it seems like the wireless connection stops working (i.e. the progress bar for loading a page freezes and won't load any further although all the other apps seem to be ok) - soft reset seems to solve each time.
The most annoying problem for me though at the moment is that I have to close all applications before connecting to my laptop via usb or the running apps just crash as soon as it connects - again probably an activesync issue I guess.
I have never used a cooked rom before but you guys seem to swear by them so hopefully one will come out which sorts these issues - or maybe HTC will post an update.

Have you tried Netfront browser to see if that works better?
potential Freezing solution-worked for me
Don't laugh......this has worked for me. Go into Settings-systems-screen-clear type-uncheck enable clear type
I also have no aftermarket keyboard loaded-just using what came with device....no more freezing during SMS.
I cant get the auto name feature to dump into the SMS or email field when I type the name though

Wierd screen like before

Remember eclair, when the screen every now and then went crazy and registered in a whole completely different spot other than where ya touched, causing you to have to shut your screen off and back on. Quite annoying but not a big deal since it rarely happened especially on customs ...
I figured I'd wait for this poll to pop up or read about it, but itching to know.
Anyways has anyone experienced this behavior with froyo yet?
I have not and for me that's awesome. Although it was minor and infrequent it still wasn't cool...
I've had this happen twice so far in two days, both times in the bottom right corner of the screen. Tapping 1 inch away from the bottom right corner would actually tap 1 cm farther down from where my finger was. But a quick screen off fixed it.
I had this problem very frequently the last few days.
I don't know what happend, as I had no problems since the froyo-update, but now it seems to come back – worse than ever.
I have MoDaCo Froyo and sometimes the screen goes really crazy (at every second touch, so not just rarely as in the past). But it still fixed the problem, if I try turning it on and off again…
I hate it
Yeah same, only in the last 5 or so days has this started happening.
Bottom left corner. Whenever i try to press the letter 'a' im either pushing the numbers button or the 'back' button. A right pain in the arse!
Also experienced this issue frequently, recently. The difference is trying to type a space and it going back.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
happens when im typing. i hit "L" but it does backspace or any letter near the space bar as well. -__- like other people said a quick screen off fixes it. still annoying though.
Same for me. Used to be infrequent but since froyo its all the time. I eventually called support and they said must be acalibration issue so they are sending me a new phone. But I don't think its a hardware problem. We will see. Interestingly they did suggest a hard reset and of course I said I'd tried that (which I hadnt). So after the call 4 days ago I did try that and I have not had the problem since. New hardware should turn up tomorrow, so I guess I will swap it anyway and see what happens. Gina tripan was talking about this in This Week In Tech so I think its a widespread problem.
D
So a hard reset resolved the issue for you? Did you do a Titanum backup or sth like this or would that restore the touchscreen issues as well?
I don't want to lose all settings/app data/... again
But I guess if I only restore apps and app data (and no system settings etc.) it might work?
I can confirm that teh hard reset did NOT solve the problem, and I am still waiting for my new hardware.
I did not do a titanium backup, I just had the setting checked for my data and apps to be backed up with Google.
All my apps got reinstalled automatically, all I lost was the notes from my AK Notepad app which I thought were stored on SD Card but which are not (you can manually export them and reimport after hard reset if you need to).

Issues since updating my Bravo

I would like to start this out by saying that I have had my Bravo since January 16, and have loved every minute of it. This has been my first Android (Came over from my iPhone 3G). I was extremely excited to finally get the upgrade to 2.2, even though I decided to wait to officially download it OTA.
Since I got my phone, I had no more than three to five apps force close on my using the stock launcher. I rarely noticed much of any lag while working with my phone, and I never once had any issues with the phone rebooting itself on me.
Since I updated my phone on Saturday I've been plagued with all of these issues. Immediately after updating, I noticed my phone was running very hot, and my battery drained to 50% within an hour or two without me even running anything stressful on it. I restarted it twice and since then I haven't noticed any significant issues with my battery, or the phone seeming to run it's processor excessively.
But, I have constant lag, making tasks that were extremely quick and easy before the weekend be significantly more difficult and frustrating. Today I've even noticed that the lag is so bad that I am not even able to use Swype because the phone takes so long to register any touch's it doesn't register anything other than the first and last letter I swyped across. In addition, my phone has rebooted itself 3 times within the last three days I've been using it, an issue that has not happened once in the three months before this weekend.
I will regularly be trying to do things on my phone and it will lag, causing the phone to freeze for 20-30 seconds at a time, and then trying to perform every touch it received in those 20-30 seconds in a scant second after it recovers.
I have noticed some issues not regarding lag, but sometimes it has been difficult for my phone to initiate calls. I have tried to call my wife, and it took 5 times before the call would finally go through, it was immediately ending the call right after I pressed the call button.
I love my phone and the capabilities of the Android system. Until now I haven't had any problems at all with it. Can you help me try to figure out what's happening, and if there are any ways to fix my phone? I haven't gotten around to rooting my phone since I've gotten it, but have been planning on it.

Something probably is messed up in the upgrade process.
Simple solution, flash the 2.2 sbf and you should be good.
roadkizzle, Something doesn't sound right at all with your update. I would try to remove the battery for a minute and reboot. If you still have issues I would try a factory data reset. If that doesn't cure your ills then flashing the 2.2sbf as bandroidx suggested may be in order.
Alright, I flashed the SBF file to the phone through RSDLite, and from what I can see it went through correctly. My only question now is do you think I'll need to try to re-install the full update? Or is that similar to what I did?

flashing the sbf already updated your phone to 2.2. You don't need to do anything else
I hope reflashing did the trick for you. That experience sounds nasty...

Well, after a couple of hours of playing with my phone it's seeming better. I have been playing a few games of Worms, and my normal surfing the internet and so far I haven't noticed any real lag. The test will be my day through tomorrow.
I was just really confused because I was following the instructions from the Flashing SPRecovery SBF to a Motorola Droid youtube video, and his SBF file really seemed to only change the recovery screen. It looked like he still had to go through the actual update.zip process to make the actual updates to his phone.
Alright it's official, flashing the sbf did not fix the lag issues. My phone hasn't had a critical malfunction and reboot itself yet today, but the lag is unbearable.
roadkizzle, It sounds like you are still having issues. If you look at the system version in "about phone" in settings menu does it say version 37.4.0.MB520??
Yes, it says Version.37.4.0.MB520.ATT.en.US

what apps do you have installed?
look in task master and get rid of any auto-ends and reboot and see if that makes a difference
Well, immediately after removing the AT&T apps from the auto-end list and rebooting, I thought I noticed some lag initially, but I've let it run for a few days now doing everything I was before and I've not been having any of those issues recently.
I'm not sure what it was. I wasn't very aggressive adding apps to my auto-end list, really just Maps and the AT&T apps. I added maps after a while because when I would use it once it would stay open and I'd notice later on that it would have been a major consumer of my battery, and I couldn't figure out how to close it fully.
Glad to hear things are going better. I had some issues totally unrelated to the apps I had in auto-end but pulling all of them off of auto-end got rid of the issues. Froyo is supposed to minimise the need for having to add apps to auto-end in task manager. Regards
(SIA for the long post)
roadkizzle - my situation sounds very similar to yours and I wanted see if you are also seeing a couple of other symptoms I've seen beyond what you have indicated. This has been an issue from early on for me. At first it seemed to be associated to when the battery was low, but it is now ever increasingly interrupting my use of the phone. I was hoping 2.2 might resolve some of this, but it hasn't.
Background: Purchased/activated phone early Jan 2011; recently upgraded to the 2.2 sys and used the official channels; all apps I've added are lightweight stuff (ex: notepad-type stuff, weather widget) and I have pushed most unused stuff to the auto-end list.
Similar symptoms: I see the same power drain and high CPU usage when using maps/navigator (really evident on a recent trip). Still monitoring if some of that can be attributed to use of the GPS.
I'm getting a similar lag though I wish it was only for the short period you are seeing. I've only rarely been able to just put the phone down and have it responsive when I get back to it. Maps/Navigator were especially susceptible to this problem, and it seemed consistent with the 90%+ CPU usage often seen when they are running.
I don't use swipe, but the keypad is most often what is being used when the lag kicks in... the entire phone just goes completely unresponsive, including any and all other input such as the hardware home/back keys, etc.
In addition: Better than half the time that the qwerty touchpad becomes unresponsive, I see sporadically entered random keystrokes to my messages... everything from initiating the voice input to entering several dozen spaces or just simple random characters. This happens at a random, often changing rate and I see the keys lighting up and the haptic responses happen as if I were touching the keys, but they are not from any delay in the input. Once ruling out an exorcism, this has started me thinking I might have a hardware issue with the touchpad. The phone has not been dropped or roughed up in any way, so if it is HDWR, it's a manuf issue.
Luckily.... in 99% of the cases where this happens, using the HDWR power button to cycle the screen through a sleep and back resolves the issue. Not a big deal unless you have to do it 3 times to send one text/mail. This has me constantly thinking about items on the auto-end list but I have not unearthed anything to support that.
The other 1% of the time I have had to reboot the phone, but in those cases I can't rule out 'user issues' due to just pure frustration. Task Manager has become my most freq used app, but often I see everything at 0% CPU and/or not running.
I'm wondering if any of these additional symptoms sound familiar...
thx.

Try taking things off of the auto-end list. You shouldn't need the task killer because android manages apps on its own (it's supposed to manage apps better in froyo than in 2.1)
I've also had lag, especially when opening maps (the first time I open maps it often force closes).
Can anyone get the "lock pattern" screen without the slide to unlock? It seems like a common "Motorola 2.2" issue, but I can't figure out if it gets resolved through an update or not

Startup Keypad Lag Issue

Hi to all from a 99% highly satisfied v20 user!
I have run into an intermittent issue with my Verizon v 20 (VS99513A).
ONLY when I initially power-up the phone, do I sometimes (often enough to be a nuisance but far from consistent) get a significant lag on the "Secure start-up" page of the keyboard appearing where I enter my passcode. There have been a small handful of times that, no matter what I did in terms of waiting or tapping, the keyboard would not appear causing me to do a power-off/restart which always cleared the issue.
Most of the time I wait until the screen flashes a brighter light before tapping ( just a few seconds) and (most of the time) the keyboard appears. It will also appear frequently on its own if you just wait long enough.
The problem is the inconsistency of the keyboard not appearing reasonably quickly so I can enter my passcode and go on with my life's journey at that point!
I have chosen NOT to use the fingerprint entry system for a number of reasons and prefer using the above system.
My one desire is to have the keyboard appear as quickly as is reasonably possible and do so consistently.
Other that that specific issue, I love this phone!
I did search for this issue and did not see anything approximating it. If I missed then please accept my humble apology for any duplication with this query.
Bootup times can vary. And with Verizon bloat I'm sure it is wildly more inconsistent. I rarely.run into this issue, but I also rarely reboot my phone. Perhaps a cache clear might help? Don't know what else to do besides factory reset but sure you don't want to do that. I just rooted my phone and haven't noticed any performance issues aside from battery life seeming worse. Not related to root though as i updated to 10j Sunday, rooted last night and hoping battery life goes back to what it was on 10d.
Just for some clarification, what do you mean by power up? Is it turning the phone off completely and restarting it or just clicking the power button ( or double tap the screen).
If its a boot up, then its usual normal to have the keyboard take a moment to pop up due to everything loading
If its the second then try using a different keyboard or factor resetting the phone

"Is it turning the phone off completely and restarting it..." Yes, that is the only time(s) it happens.
I grasp the idea of "loading" but cannot (equally) grasp the inconsistent amount of time that it takes for the keyboard to materialize. The few times where no keyboard appearing leading to a reboot deepens the mystery for me.
If the extended loading time is due (largely) to verizon bloat, is there a safe way to rid oneself of as much of it as possible?

Of course, you can disable the apps by going into Setting>General tab>Apps. From there you just find the Verizon apps and disable as much of them as possible. Which stops them from booting when you restart.
One thing to keep in mind when powering up the device is a few programs want to start up at the same time (like your wallpaper, getting signal from service provider, loading the apps on your screen, loading widgets, etc). Which causes the keyboard to be pushed but back in a queue. Happens to me all the time, but I only restart my phone once every week and I give it a moment for everything to be settled in.

Sent from my LG V20 using XDA Labs
To All,
My issue appears to have resolved itself if I restrict my tapping to the vertical blinking cursor on the left end of the entry line.
Tapping ONLY here consistently brings up the number pad.
Previously, tapping just about anywhere on the screen would bring it up.
Problem solved.
Thanks.

Lock screen freezes

Hello XDA,
This is my very first community post so please don't judge if I do something wrong here
Let's cut to the chase. I am a happy owner of the OP6T 8/256gb phone and I am super happy with the device, however, I have been having an awkward issue. From time to time, couple of times a day, my phone would not recognize neither double tap nor the power button to wake the display up. Usually out of frustration I press the power button couple of more time, but nothing happens. Then after 3-4 seconds the display wakes up and even opens the camera (because I pressed the button couple of times, but not in a fast way...). Afterwards, the phone works without an issue until same thing happens hours later.
So my question is if anyone is experiencing anything similar and found the culprit of it?
If you need any additional info on my settings, please let me know!
It is not the worst thing that could be happening with a new phone, but you know, one expects the brand new phone to work 100% of the time
Looking forward to your replies and ideas!
Many thanks,
Donatas
It's happened to me only recently. I'm rooted with magisk 17.3 running a few modules such as dual speaker, Google dialer framework and viper. I was on stock kernel, but switched to Smurf kernel without any hiccups so far.
Well I am full stock, even with stock launcher... That's why it bothers me that it is happening:/ thanks for your reply

Yes this has happened to me, glad to see I'm not alone.
It happeneds randomly, like few times a day, not too frequent to render the device unusable, but enough to be irritating - especially when it's a brand new device.
My setup;
*Rooted
*Magisk (viper & YouTube vanced module)
*Stock kernel
I'm at a loss as to what's the cause of this issue, it's very weird, it could just be an oxygen os bug that will be resolved by OnePlus. Who knows. Hopefully if more people comment about this here - we will eventually get to the bottom of it.
So far on 9.0.6 build the issue appears to have been fixed, I have not had any random temporary lock screen freeze.
Can anyone else confirm this?

Glad to hear it is fixed for you!
Unfortunately, since the update, I already experienced it 4 times...
Even more so, sometimes now the phone would randomly stop playing music from Soundcloud (I dont know about other apps, i predominantly use Soundcloud).
I love the phone but it is a little shame that some of these features are failing
Hope 1+ will fix this and we all be happy!
Yeah, sometimes my device doesn't respond to double-tap. Usually I just have to double-tap again and it wakes up. I haven't noticed the issue with the power button, but I rarely use that to wake the device. I did have a situation recently where the device wouldn't wake from a screen tap no matter how many times I tried. I can't recall if using the power button woke it or if I had to force a reboot. But that's only happened that one time.
I just updated to 9.0.6 a day ago. I don't think I've experienced any non-wake issues since then. Really haven't been paying that close attention, I guess.
I believe I am having this issue. I just flashed 9.0.7 from TMO and I'm rooted with magisk v4a and vanced. I get random freezes where I can't tap anything on my screen. I have to turn it off and on with the power button.
I experience this as well. I thought it was just an isolated thing, and it's kinda annoying...
It's very irritating. I'm trying to pin point it and so far I notice it with Firefox and Spotify transitions.
