Apparently, with Android 5, apps can no longer change the phone's data connection. I am looking for a way to enable this feature, so that a specific app I use has the ability to toggle on/off 3G system-wide. I know this is possible using the Quick Settings, but this is not what I'm looking for.
I am using a OnePlus 2 running Android 5.1.1 ,with an OxygenOS 2.2.0 custom ROM.
Thank you!

So, I've looked, yet have been unable to answer this. Please help asap...
I just purchased a user MT3g Slide (red), and it is currently NOT rooted and on 2.1-Update1. I have had many Android phones, all rooted, including a MT3G non-slide, but on this one I don't care about root. I have an Asus Transformer, and all I need from this phone is wifi tether for the tablet.
So, can I wifi tether without root, and if so, how?
If not, how should I go about rooting AND getting tether? Rooting on this phone looks like a pain in the a**, so I'd like to avoid it... :hs:
Thanks
if you don't want to root and have wifi tether, get the official froyo update from htc, that will get you the wifi tether.

Just did it, thanks! Any good widgets you might know of to switch it on/off without going through the settings menu?
you might want to try widgetsoid 2.x, it allows you to tag a whole bunch of widgets on one bar, and also put a shortcut of an app to the widget. the wifi tethering widget won't work (not sure why, but tried it before), so you can link a shortcut of the wifi tethering app and gain access to that.
or just put a shortcut of the app on your screen =P

Awesome, thanks
I'm confused. You just switched to an AOSP rom yet you refuse to root?
Do you realize that that would void any warranty you possibly had?
Also, root and run the thing at 800mhz. My phone is smoother then most stock 1ghz phones.

Hi. I just started using mobile internet but my telco only give me 250MB per month. What apps do you recommend that can control the data usage? For starters I've been using android firewall to block some apps from using my data. But I would like to know more apps. And how do I block the system update OTA from using my data to check for updates?
Why not just turn off the data radio until you actually need it?

i have been using macrodroid to turn off data when screen off(and other things). But you can do this a number of ways, through settings, and long pressing on the tile in quick settings will bring up a screen to turn off mobile data to

Try This.
CALL TIMER CONTROL PRO

Just use Greenify. Best app and has really good response. If you try this you'll never go back. It hibernates lots of apps and stops them from draining batt/data in the background remember to disable notifications in the background for all internet-related apps.
Greenify also works for ALL apps. Just add it to the grenify list.
It's the only app you're gonna need and is gonna solve your problem.
Also in settings, set the Data usage limit so you don't exceed it. Good luck

Did anybody else lose the "Mobile Data" toggle on the quick setting screen after the update to 4.3? I used that toggle a ton and I vaguely recall having an issue like this when I first picked up the phone on release. Don't remember how I got the toggle back. Tips or solutions?
I have airplane mode toggle still but not the one for just mobile data.
Yea I lost it to, I guess now using settings and uncheking data.
http://www.galaxys4forums.net/forum...d-add-wifi-toggle-your-verizon-galaxy-s4.html
Link to show how to add WiFi toggle. I would imagine if you know what the toggle is called for mobile data you could just add it. Must be rooted.
I'll look on mine to see what the data toggle is called in that file, unless someone else chimes in.
Edit: should work if you add this as the link directs
MobileData
I did all that and added MobileData to the list, but it's still not working.

The Verizon method is not applicable to the sprint method.
Does anyone know a method to edit the settings/script without having to install an third-party app to bring back the mobile data toggle?

I'd even take a suggestion for a third-party app at this point. Not having that toggle is driving me crazy.
I use PieControl and set one of the shortcuts to Data Toggle. It's actually faster to toggle it on with Pie Control than the pull down & click way.
Has no one figured this out yet? I'm really surprised. It seems like this would've been one of the first fixes addressed for MJA...

There is a fix. Either a dev puts it or you did it yourself. Someone above posted a reference link on how to add wifi toggle. Its the same process in adding data toggle you just need to know the name of the toggle. Its all up there really.

I added ;MobileData to my list when I added ;WiFiHotspot and it works perfectly. The Semi Colon is required between each entry.
So I'm thinking of getting back into development (I last did development for the Droid 3 and Droid Bionic), and I'm one to make my own standalone ROM to share with everyone.
Here's where I need your suggestions: What do we have in our ROMs already that can be improved, and what do we not have in the ROMs we have that you want? It can range from theming to mods to just anything.
This would help me greatly in making my decision to start developing again or not.
Thanks.

That would be amazing.
Smart lockscreen: enable/disable based on location (home/work) or time of day, integrated directly into ROM.
Native reverse tethering support
Mass storage mode
Multiwindow/halo windows
Unlimited OTG
Programatically changeable lockscreen (thru Tasker w/ api or shell)
That's all I can think of on the spot.

Perhaps some kind ultra debloat ROM? Like an Anti Goog, Anti VZW, anti Sammy ROM.
Their functionality could be added afterwards as desired. First thing I do after installing a ROM is freeze 100 plus items (even on a debloated ROM.)

I can help you with an ultra debloat ROM if you would would like to test what I have developed. I took the stock Kitkat ROM and debloated it down to less that 600MB. I have tested it for a few days now and everything is working perfectly but I want a few more testers.
-Tablet Mode
-LED Control based on notification type
-Navbar/Navigation Bar customization to add more buttons to custom apps
-Recent apps in a different view, i think it's called "tiled" where you can see more at once horizontally, rather than vertically
-Double tap the "action bar" of any app to make it a floating window, and double tap it again to "maximize" the app...similar to MS Windows
Ok google functions from the moto x (not the google experience launcher ones) on the fly themeing for everything ocons status bar colors toggle colors ect...

Interesting. I have been pretty busy and have been running the original firmware and Beans version 2.
Hopefully I will get around to checking out the Kitkat release soon.
I wonder if there could be a tool or Mod that could be a bloat configurator that would work on a ROM like Beans or Hyper drive or stock.
Maybe it is a superior solution to cook a dedicated debloat ROM instead of some script that is too difficult to make work with other ROMs?
Debloated aosp style or cyanogenmod

one thing that's importnat is having the security for exchange email bypassed. i have no need for mandatory password on my phone just for my corporate email.
Languages
my problem with Verizon's based room is that they don't enable more languages like french.
USB 3 without forcing wifi mode if thats possible? My only complaint on nc2 is the radio which i will fix tonight, and the fact the notification bar is forced to have those horrible widgets, i want stock KK notification bar
Nice thread. I'll keep an eye out.

I also think some more intuitive lockscreen widgets would be nice; quick Google-search widget, minimalistic text weather widget, iPhone-like text/notification previews (possible with Tasker btw) customizable to just sms sender or parent application (currently developing myself also), and BIGGEST THING:
BIGGEST ROM FEATURE REQUEST: along with remote lock/remote wipe, have a remote BRICK! This will guaranteed protect your sensitive data and render the phone useless to thief! Topping the ice cream: along with wiping bootloader, replace with homebrew one with NO download/fastboot mode, just on-screen derogatory message and maybe a contact number. HA!

How can I selectively disable Mobile Data for Apps (Just like in iOS) ?
The complete disabling of "background data" doesn't suit my purpose.
Settings, data usage, cellular data toggle
That's one way.

If you don't mind installing another application. I would recommend MobiWol. Just turn on the VPN and select the apps that you do not want using any Cellular data.

Thanks I shall try that out. Is that a VPN to trust or just a local Android VPN? The App's ratings are just around 3.x.

It is not a VPN, they are just enabling a firewall and sending all traffic thru the firewall. If you look there FAQ's you can see that information on why they did that. Its because this way you dont have to rely on root to enable firewall
I use NetGuard to disable mobile data on selective apps.

That's cool as well. But doing it individually for hundreds of installed apps are a chore. Wish there was a centralized place and global policy (just like the other apps mentioned above) to manage.

It's better to use what is already in MM.
I use it for an app and it's working well.
It was built in since Kit Kat, maybe before that.
