Flashing factory image without erasing user data? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys, i have a big question about flashing a new factory image without erasing userdata
i like to root my nexus player (6.0.1) and because of that im forced to flash a new factory each time i want to update my nexus player because i cant update using OTA (to get root on 6.0 we use a modified system and OTA doesnt work if there is any modified system or recovery)
i have a 250 gb local disk i use with nexus player as internal memory so i can download (and i do) all the free grames and apps from play store, and, of course, i play those games.
i install sideload apps too.
All of this to do it all over again each time a new update comes is a big pain,
is there a way to avoid erasing userdata when i flash a factory image?
or is there a way to backup all my games, apps and info? (like titanium backup, i didnt test it because i didnt realised of that idea before i erased everything)
Help me guys please! XDA rocks!!

[Q] re-enable OTA updates Nexus 7

Hi all,
I have a nexus 7 running Android 4.1.2 stock w/ root. Some months ago, I disabled the OTA update notification - but I can't seem to remember how!
I want to now re-enable OTA updates so that I can update to the latest android version, and not lose my installed apps.
I've searched the device for FOTAKill.apk inside /system/app, and its not found
I've also searched for frozen / hidden apps using Titanium Backup Pro... nothing
When I enter Settings -> About Tablet -> System Updates... it says I'm up to date... but I'm not, considering I'm running 4.1.2.
Any help or pointers in re-enabling OTA is appreciated!!
- make a full nandroid backup.
- using fastboot, flash the system.img file from the 4.2.2 factory image to the system partition.
- using your custom recovery, reflash a SuperSU root kit bundle.
- using the custom recovery, wipe cache and dalvik-cache.
If you don't like the result, restore the nandroid backup and proceed in a different fashion. It will probably break things like stickmount and any other changes that you caused in /system.
Note the above method is for use by lazy and sloppy users. A better approach is to make TiBu backups of only your market apps, bite the bullet, and start from scratch with a flash & (new) configuration of a pure stock ROM. In any case, every conceivable procedure should start with making a full nandroid backup and getting it copied to a safe place off the tablet.
I will also say that unless odd problems crop up, the portions of the factory install procedure (using fastboot) that deal with erasure or flashing of the userdata partition should be skipped, as these steps completely wipe your /data storage - including your /sdcard area in /data/media/0 and any CWM/TWRP nandroid backups!
It's not really clear why these steps would be needed unless the /data ext4 filesystem in the userdata partition got corrupted somehow. A more sly approach would be to use the custom recovery's "factory reset" procedure to clean up /data - either before or after flashing the factory ROM - and completely skip anything that touches the userdata partition in the factory install instructions.
good luck

Jumping from AOKP to Stock. How?

I'm stuck on AOKP 4.2, and would like to upgrade to stock 4.4 + xposed (been hearing great things about it). And I have a bunch of questions before I do the deed.
1. Can I just wipe apps + data and flash the stock image? Will that preserve my recovery (TWRP) and root?
2. Should I also get a 4.4-specific baseband?
3. I'd like to backup my contacts, along with the merged/linked data. How do I do that?
You don't need to wipe anything beforehand. If you want to preserve recovery, you'll have to flash each image separately instead of doing the flash all or remove the recovery image from the stock package, as that will prevent it from being overwritten. No, root can't be preserved because you are flashing a new system partition. You can simply flash superuser.zip afterwards, or TWRP may offer to root for you.
You don't necessarily need a new radio. Personally, I'm still using an older hybrid, for LTE purposes.
The best way would be having your contacts synced with Google. Otherwise, you'll need Titanium Backup for contacts and all other data anyway.

1) how are you flashing? if you use the autoflash through fastboot, youll lose everything. however, if you flash each partition manually through fastboot, you can preserve your current recovery.
2) if you aren't having issues now, i would stay with the radio you are currently using. radios are cross compatible between android versions.
3) there are a few root apps in the play store for contacts backup. if you have a google account, they should all be auto backed up (provided that you saved every contact to your google account and not your sim card)

I recommend you to use an official stock ROM, and install it. It will not preserve anything, so you should export your contacts, and restore them later.
After restoring stock ROM, you can install any recovery and root from fresh.

[Q] Flashing N4 from stock to Paranoid Android

I wonder whether it's possible to manually flash PA without touching the /data partition. I used to do it to manually when updating factory ROMs because I couldn't update OTA. I would have backed up all apps and data but Nexus 4 doesn't have external memory card slot and I already ran out of space for a complete back up.
By manual flash I mean unpack the ROM and flash each section one by one using command line.
I understand backing up is very important. But there seems no good solution. Is there a way to back up all data, I mean all - photos and app data both internal and external - when I am still running factory and restore all data once I flash to PA? What are the commands I need to use?

installing a rom

hello i have a quick question. I want to install optimus rom .My question is in order to install the rom i must do a full wipe which is to wipe delcache/cache/ data/system. But on the lgg2 d800 all my apps and games are stored on the sdcard partition of the internal storage. if i wipe everything will it also wipe these apps ? i dont care if it does im just asking because in the past i dont think it did. I think the rom installed and all my apps were still taking of space on my storage but i wasnt able o access them.
Also if i download the rom file to my phone how am i supposed to install it if i have to wipe the phone out? Am i supposed to use lg flash tool to get my phone back to stock ( meaning unrooted ) and then reinstall a kk rom then recovery ,root, then a new rom?
i only ask this because it seems like everythime i install the stock tot kitkat rom file here on xda theres always some issue with it.
It is generally advised to wipe data/cache/dalvik when flashing a new rom. When wiping your installed apps, messages, settings etc are deleted. Everything on your internal storage is not however.
Download the appropriate files,(Rom, gapps, etc), wipe and flash.
You can backup all your apps before flashing with Titanium backup, backup+, helium and so on..
If you are on stock you will need to root and install a recovery.. You'll find the appropriate guides in the forum..
Good luck.

Stuck in boot loop, how can I save my app data?

OK, I played with Titanium Backup and removed some Samsung apps like S health... Now I am stuck at boot loop and phone wont start. I am on stock rom 6.01 rooted. tried everything I could read:
- installed TWRP - did not quite work, gave me an error "is not seadroid"
- installed CWM - I can boot into it, but not much I can do to fix the boot, I tried wiping the partition cache and dalvik, but not help
- installed root again with stock recovery, nothing..
If I install the latest version of stock firmware, will I loose my app data? All I care about is to preserve my notes from ColorNote I read somewher that if a rom does not have userdata img, it wont wipe. Does the stock firmware have that? I am just looking for a way to get back in, backup stuff, and then reflash properly.
I tried going the adb route, but nothing there either. In cmd it says now unlock your phone for the pull command to compete, which obviously I cannot do.
Any other options to save my ColorNotes and Pictures?
OK, I was able to execute:
adb pull / C:\Myfile
This copied system files pretty much. How do I copy the app data or personal data - that's what I actually need
Got lucky...
I had to flash the latest stock firmware, but because I was running it anyway, just not the latest security patch, I the system ended up upgrading and all my files were preserved. It is as if I simply got the monthly patch.
