Voice mail on Verizon? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't figure out how to setup any sort of voicemail on my 6P. If prefer to have Google voice handle my voicemail, but so far I can't get it to work. I can overall the app and set it up through the voicemail settings, but when calling my phone it still says I don't have voicemail setup.
I've used GV for years with my other Android phones, this is the first time I've had an issue.
I've seen suggestions to forward my number to my GV number through Verizon settings, but I don't want to use that phone number I just want the voicemail.
Had anyone figured this out?
Alternately I'd go with stock Verizon voicemail, non-visual.

You have to set up No answer forwarding so Google can get the call and manage the VM.
You set up no answer forward to your GV number and it works.

Thanks for the reply, can you tell me how to do that? Just need a little more details, never done it before.
Edit: I figured out the forwarding part, just wish there was a way to not have to go thru two full ring cycles. It rings my vzw number then my GV number then I get to voicemail.
It also causes my home PC to ring with the Google voice number...

*71[Your Google Voice number] -- This turns on Conditional Forwarding, which should transfer calls to your Google Voice number when your Verizon phone is busy or unanswered after 3 to 6 rings.
*90[Your Google Voice number] -- This turns on Busy Transfer, which transfers all calls that would hear a busy signal to your Google Voice number.
*92[Your Google Voice number] -- This turns on No Answer Transfer, which transfers all calls unanswered after 3 to 6 rings to your Google Voice number.
Now you need to login to your GV.
Go to settings -> Voicemail and texts.
Now set up your greeting, etc.
Now go to phones and add your number (Verizon).
Now click "edit" then show advanced.
Look at the various options.
The one you are really interested in "Go Straight To VM".
This will send all your calls on GV straight to VM.
You want this so the Verizon caller does not get additional rings on GV.

I used to have Verizon VVM but didn't really use it that much so when I switched to the 6P I canceled it online. For the next couple of days when I got a voicemail I wouldn't get a notification but I would get a text with a string of characters. Then I called Verizon and they put the VVM cancel though and since then I get the normal voicemail icon. I can dial into voicemail from there and listen to them as normal.
I don't really miss visual voicemail, but I don't get a ton of them to begin with.

Google Voice not receiving texts and vm (4g)

Just switched to the Nexus 4g and loving it. The only issue I'm having is now texts and voicemails are not coming through to the GV app or online, only the stock messaging. Anyone else having this problem? I can initiate texts through the GV app and the browser, but that's it.
I tried clearing the data and reinstalling. Nothing. When I go to voicemail under settings, Google Voice is not listed as a choice.
How do you have your number setup. Is it ported? I would start with checking your online settings, but more information is needed.

Also, when you call VM, are you getting Sprint's VM or are you getting GV Voice mail? That's another good place to start to see if you're fully ported over.
Dial *28 and your google voice area code and number then hit send. Did you set up conditional call forwarding? There might also be a setting in calls section to select voicemail. Carrier or google voice.
Personally, I would stay away from that porting your number can of worms. To me it's more trouble than it's worth. There's really not much or any difference between the old way of having them separate. You have more control if you use the old way. You also don't have that mms snafu like you would if you integrated.
I just read your post again. Something isn't set up right if there isn't a choice. I think I know. Go to the market and download google voice again and install it on top of itself. Make sure you are logged out of gv on your phone before doing this. I think updating breaks integration and let's you use gv the old fashioned way.
I'm looking and I don't see anything talking about google voice setup.

Google Voice with the N4 on Tmobile

Is anyone currently routing all of their calls/texts/voicemails through Google voice (GV) on Tmobile?
I currently have Sprint and have integrated my number into GV (my GV number and my original Sprint number are one and the same) and I'll be switching from Sprint to Tmobile once I can get my hands on an N4. My problem is I'm not sure whether to port my number out of GV/Sprint and into Tmobile or if I should just get a brand new Tmobile number, add that to GV, and have GV just route calls/texts placed to my current number to the new Tmobile number. The only issue I'm aware of with GV is the lack of support for MMS.
Also, I sporadically have some issues on Sprint with missing calls where they show up in my GV call log but never make it through to my phone. I really like how GV can be accessed from any browser and how it logs history of my texts and calls so it would be nice to have these features still but maybe not worth the few quirks, bugs, and lack of MMS.
Can anyone comment on using GV with their Tmobile number? Worth it? Not worth it?
Google voice works fine on T-Mobile.

Actually, it depends. If you are using a T-mobile prepaid 4G plan, you can't use call forwarding. This means you can't use GV for your voicemail for your T-mobile number. In that case, if you use the full version of GV (not the limited voicemail service), then you can have voicemail and texting for your GV number. But if someone calls your T-mobile number, your GV voicemail will not be used. So it really depends on how you are trying to use it (and if you are using prepaid or not).
I use it all the time, the above is true. If you get a monthly plan its no issue. Download the app and you can select it to always call from your GV# or prompt you or never. You should have no issues with it on T-mo, the only difference is you will probably have two numbers now, but keep using the GV# like normal after you set up.
So let me get this straight...
Setup:
Google Voice #: 111-111-1111
New T-Mobile #: 222-222-2222
Let's assume I have added my new T-Mobile number to my Google Voice account, and have only shared my Google Voice number with people.

I can only speak for my G2x using a post-paid plan, but I have three fields I can set on my phone under Options -> Call settings -> Call forwarding: Busy, Unanswered, and Unreachable (along with "Always Forward"). Each of those has enable/disable and a separate number. In my case, I'm testing out GrooVe IP, since I have poor signal strength at home, so I have Busy and Unanswered set to my Google Voice voicemail number and Unreachable set to my main Google Voice number (so if I'm at home on wifi with no signal, GrooVe IP will ring me). That all works so my voicemail is via Google Voice and not T-Mobile.
Since you have Sprint/GV integrated, if you want to cancel Sprint service you will have some extra steps. Cancel Sprint integration, port your Sprint# to GV, then forward the GV calls to the new TMo#.

If you're prepaid like me you can just call them and have them disable your voicemail. Then as long as people only have your GV number you will get all voicemails to GV.
Why not just get a Google voice number and tell everyone you know to use it instead of your carrier number.

Anyone get at&t visual voicemail app working?

Curious as to how to make it work. At first I couldnt even download the apk from the play store as it said wasnt compatible with my device. Got the apk elsehwere on this site and still cant get past the missing voicemail password screen.
I, too, am having trouble getting VVM to work.
Is anyone using visual voicemail?
Is it setup on your account through at&t? AFAIK, its a feature that has to be "turned on", much like a data plan, etc. if you have an "LTE" phone (so, an lte imei) you should be able to get your account provisioned for lte and visual voicemail. But even after all this, its still may not work. Worth the try though unless someone else has gotten it to work elsewhere.
Take what I said with a grain of salt, I could be wrong, but think this is how that vvm works.
Edit: alternatively, Google voice's visual voicemail works on this phone.

Att's VVM is a two step headache when it comes to android. First, you need to have it provisioned on your account and then the app only works on approved phones. It worked just fine on my vivid when it was stock, but once rooted and on a custom ROM, the app didn't work anymore. I started using GV and have been much happier with it.

Yes I have an lte data plan on my account and have visual voicemail enabled. I've checked all thise with at&t but I cant get the at&t visual voicemail app to work on this device. It just hangs when trying to set my password. I was wondering if I'm the only one with this issue

You don't have to. I still use my mobile number for everything, but have my voicemails forwarded to Google voice. If you have a Google voice number, just download the GV app and let it set up your voicemail. People will call your main number, but GV picks up to leave a message. The caller will not know the difference and you still get your voicemails to your phone. You can even have GV display the voicemails right in the call log.

This is exactly what I did as well. Use my regular number for making and receiving calls, unanswered calls forwarded to Google Voice (using **004* number), then set "Do Not Disturb" in Google Voice so that all calls go straight to voicemail.
Now, people calling me hear 4 rings (the usual number of rings) and if I don't answer, it immediately plays my GV greeting and a beep for the message.
Using the integration to the phone's call log even gives me a "Play" button right along with missed call notifications. It's pretty sweet and I highly recommend it.

Using tmo voicemail with google voice

I would like to use Google Voice's voicemail instead of tmobile's since my tmo number is a throw away and I've never given it out. I have tried changing the forwarding numbers, but it won't let me change anything. I get an error saying the network won't let me. I have also tried changing my voicemail number (the one that is dialed when you long press #1 for vm speeddial) but I get a similar message saying the netowrk won't allow it.
I have discovered this xposed module http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106490 seems to be on the right track, since it does edit the number registered to the sim card, but it doesn't allow you to edit the voicemail number registered to the sim card.
Does anyone know of a way to do this? The only partial solution I've found is by adding my Google Voice number to my sim card so I can dial 1# and get through, but I would like Google Voice to replace tmobile's voicemail altogether. This still does not forward callers to Google Voice's voicemail unless I set my phone to airplane mode.
Are you using a pay as you go plan? If so, those don't support call forwarding (which is used for Google voicemail). If you are, you can call up T-Mobile and ask them to disable your voicemail. That should allow Google voice to pick up you're voicemail after so many rings.

Yes. I'm on the monthly plan and it allows call forwarding. But, like I said, you could achieve a similar effect by having TMO disable your voicemail all together, and google voice will pick up your voicemail after so many rings.

Thanks very much, I'll give that a shot! This has been driving me crazy since I switched to Tmo in February, and I've just dealt with it until now.

I'm on TMoUS with the N4 and use G Voice for my voicemail. It does work fine and I can just use the in-phone voicemail setup to switch my VM carrier. I do have a post-paid monthly 4g plan though. It sounds like you already have G Voice set to forward your number to the TMo number so that's fine.
I don't think that disabling the TMo voicemail will work by itself because I don't think it will fall back to the previous number. It would probably just ring or just end the call. You could also just use G Voice for your dialer too and run everything over data.

Google Voice automatically sends to voicemail after 25 seconds. I learned this when I was using VoIP on the $30 pre-paid plan. Disabling TMO voicemail is necessary as it picks up before 25 seconds.

I would, but I don't always have a reliable mobile data signal, so I get a lot of missed/dropped calls. I'd love to be able to just drop tmo voice service entirely, though, and get 100% free voice calls!
I called Tmo and had my voicemail disabled the other day, and I'm still not able to set gv as the primary voicemail or set a forwarding number. I still get the 'contact your carrier' message. when I try to set gv voicemail, and I get a network/sim error when I try to change the forwarding numbers. I got a new sim recently, but I can rule that out because it's the same error with both sim cards in, as well as with the sim removed.
After installing Google voice, did you go into the phone, click setup from there and then select voicemail? Then change carrier to Google voice and select setup. I just use the app/widget instead of trying to dial from the phone to check for voicemail.
I have no idea about forwarding calls though.
If it doesn't go through, maybe try and un install them re install GV

If you're on prepaid, you'll never be able to set up forwarding. However, Google voicemail should still work properly if you have disabled your T-mo voicemail and configured the gvoice app. It will just take a long time before it picks up.

Google Voice mail not working with VoLTE?

I have always used Google Voice as my default voice mail app. After upgrading to VoLTE (Kitkat 4.4.4), whenever someone calls me and I do not answer, it just says that my voice mail box is not set up. Anyone else having this problem?

I uninstalled and reinstalled, ran through setup and still nothing. I will try again.
I guess I don't understand the allure of VoLTE. In reading about it @ VZW site, it bills the same as regular calls so it's not like it can save on our minutes. Voice sounds just fine over standard calls IMO.
I dont know what I am doing wrong. I reset my Google Voice by uninstalling it and reinstalling, setting it up, then making sure hangouts voicemail is enabled. Anyone have any other thoughts?

I cant get forwarding to work. When I call my VZW number, it rings, pauses like its trying to forward, the the VZW phone starts ringing again. It never goes to GV, or Hangouts. If I call my GV number directly, it works fine, even from my VZW number.

I enabled Hangouts integration with Google Voice, and everything is working fine for me after setting up my Google Voice number for forwarding again with VoLTE enabled.

I had to go to Google voice on the web, goto Settings, select Edit under your phone number, then select Activate under Forwarding Options. It'll provide a *71 number for you to key in on your phone. This will be a different number than your voicemail number.
It worked for me after these steps.

Tried that yesterday several times on my own and with VZW "support." They seem to think it may be a network backend issue, and have sent it up the food chain...

I have an old plan. 1500 Min, unlimited text and data. For me, it isn't about saving minutes, it is about the quality of the call. My wife and most of my family has GS5, the others just got iPhone 6 so most of my calls VoLTE and I love it.
Slightly off topic, but has anyone gotten the calling feature within the new hangouts integration to work over wifi? I need this at work because when I have to go out on the floor there is no service, but there is wifi.

Now when I get a call it says the mail box hasn't been set up yet. I did all of the forwarding options (even shows forwarded on the myverizon page) and it still isn't forwarding to my google voice.
I don't get it. Anyone have any clues? I've already tried everything listed in this thread.

After making sure my phone was still connected via Google Voice online, these steps from Google (click on "If you're a Verizon Wireless user click here") are what got it working for me (along with making sure Google Voice was selected for voice mail in my phone's settings - Phone -> Menu -> Settings -> Call -> Voice Mail). I dialed all three one right after the other:
If you are having trouble configuring Google Voice as your voicemail service on Verizon you can make the switch manually by dialing these three activation codes:
*71[Your Google Voice number]
*90[Your Google Voice number]
*92[Your Google Voice number]

I've tried this and it has not solved my problem.
Working with Verizon Wireless, and they claim there is a problem during the forwarding. I'm likely oversimplifying, but it seems that VZW sends the call to AT&T Landline, who then sends it to Google's landline operator (I forget who they said this was), then it goes to Voice. For my number, there is a problem at the transition from AT&T Landline to Google's operator. So basically, it is a network issue that is occurring on a disinterested carriers network, and so nothing is happening fast.
On a side note, I tried to get creative since others still have working VZW to Voice forwarding, and I got a new number, and paid to keep the old number, too, in the hopes that a new number would work... No joy, I'm out $30 and now have a second number that behaves the same way as the first.

Odd that it works for some and not for others.
It would be great if Verizon would get things straightened out, but they've never cared about Google Voice and likely never will (heck, Google doesn't seem to care too much about it these days).

Tried all those options. I don't see how its working for anyone that has voLTE enabled. As soon as I disable it fowarding works fine.
I was able to successfully got Google voice back after enabling HD voice, by setting up Forwarding not on the phone, but online: https://wbillpay.verizonwireless.com/vzw/secure/services/CallForward.action

Odd that that works for you. I had tried that, and setting it up through the MyVerizon app, and by the VZW tech setting it, all with the same broken results.
