Hello,
I have been running Tomtom on my PDA's for years now without a problem.
When I changed from an HP-Ipaq to a E-ten X500 I experienced also lag.
Lag means that when you are driving, the pointer is 20 meters behind. When the car stops, Tomtom seems to be driving for a few seconds.
I solved the problem in the E-ten X500 by changing the registry
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CachSize:2048
With the Xperia, this tweak did not solve the problem, altough the Xperia is much faster and has more internal memory.
I even tried to boost up the catchesize up to 16384 with Xperia tweak 2.0. This did not help either.
Anyone got a suggestion?
Best regards,
Jan

I may not have, but I wanted to tell you that i know what you feel: i moved from a magician+btgps to a diamond, and the lag is there, just like you say:
"means that when you are driving, the pointer is 20 meters behind. When the car stops, Tomtom seems to be driving for a few seconds."
I also know what you mean, same happen to me.
I have not tested this yet but using tweaks2k2.net there is a setting for Video and have the ability to speed up video display - not sure if it will work or not as i have not had the chance to test it out yet.
me too
I have also experienced GPS lag but it is dependant on how many satellites i am connected to at the time. even with six or seven connected i still get around a ten meter gap however with around ten upwards its fine.
Hope this helps,
Creamy
Yep, I got the dreaded GPS lag too. Never happened with my N95 so was disappointed. I did think it may have had something to do with the satellites but I haven't been bothered to try a get a fix on more to test whether that improved things.
The X1 comes from the same idiots who built the "GPS laggy" Diamond, Touch Pro and HD....
Now why am I not surprise that the X1 lags?
Discussions are still on here (700+ posts and counting)

i haven't really bothered to concern about this but i did find this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=439002&page=20 for the Raphael.. i guess the x1 and diamond and raphael have the same probs and lag so i asume this might work on the x1 too...
Maybe this issue is something to do with software rather than hardware? The reason I say this is because I have tried tomtom 7, copilot 7 and igo 8 on my x1 and they all have this gps lag problem. However, I also have route 66 mobile 8 which is also good and the map cursor when moving is spot on accurate with no lag at all. No idea why though I'm afraid..
I owned a Touch Pro, and I can assure you that the Xperia does NOT suffer the issues which plague that device.
Yes, the Xperia has a little lag, but nothing particularly out of the ordinary. No GPS will be absolutely precise because of the time taken to transmit and process the data.
The Touch Pro for me was seriously bad - massive lag, frequently several hundred yards off in its positioning, and often dropping signals altogether. That is why there is a 700+ post thread about it. The Xperia has none of these problems (well, not mine anyway... )

Can't agree with that. My Nokia N95 was always absolutely spot on!
Well and how long did it take for your n95 to get a fix?
well did you ever got a fix when you were driving?.. i guess not.. so i would rather have qick fix and lag than waiting long time to get a fix then drive..
well i do have a n95 and i'm a symbian moderator on a forum so i do know what i talk about .. the raphaels gps is better usable that the n95.. eventhough the lag..
well and as for the one who stated that there were 700+ pages about a lag ifor raphael and no o much for x1.. well what do you call this thread buddy it has already started lol..
well it's better to try to impove what we got than crying about it forever..
Hey, chill out Arju007, we are all entitled to our views.
I too have a N95 (which I love), and I too am a Symbian forum Admin elsewhere, but I respect those who do not share my opinions. I just may not agree with them, that's all.
The N95 is indeed a very good GPS system, when it gets going (I find the Xperia is far quicker to get a fix). My old Palm Tungsten T3 with a GPSlim 236 bluetooth receiver was good too, and I don't notice anything significantly worse with the Xperia. I think Ruudfood has a point in that the N95 did seem a touch 'crisper' in its positioning, but only very slightly - I personally don't think the differences are that material. Others are welcome to disagree.
The main point I think is that the 'lag' isn't anywhere near as bad as the Touch Pro I had despite the hardware being identical.
sorry for being to sirectly, i didn't intend to eventhough it sounded like that..
well the raphael might have a lag issue as many people knows about but by using of what applications and tips and tweaks we got we've managed to make the lag little less... well it's better to improve what we have as i stated before than nagging about it.. well as i use raphael here in norway i haven't got any problem with it. i do see a little lag but not as much as people says with 100 yards and stuff.. mine is just like 2-5 meters sometimes much less.. so i do not have any problems with mine.. each time i get a fix i'm connected to atleast 7 or more sattelites... never less than 7 .. well that might be why i encounter less lag?. well i don't know, only speculation well as for being on topic i guess people could try the thread i shared here for the raphael on x1 and see if there is any difference.. the lag might be lesser .. thus lesser thus better ey?

Yes, I could get a fix while I was driving after A-GPS was added in the 2nd (or 3rd - can't remember) firmware update.
well the a-gps isn't something people in the symbian community wanted to use because of the the small payment after connecting to 3g, edge, hsdpa or and so forth..
Hi
I am a owner of Raphael and X1. Touch Pro has MUCH lag. X1 has a little lag. Not too bad but much worse that Samsung Omnia.
In my opinion the lag in latest HTC devices (Diamond, .... x1, hd) is produced 50% by very poor graphics performance (Refresh rate in a city is 2-3 frames/seconds for igo8. Samnsung omnia is much more smoother, almost like a video gameĀ” ) and 50% by low sensibility gps and static navigation system.....
Dani
I wondered if it was something to do with the internal GPS since the X1 has a fast processor and plenty of RAM, since we have seen lag in other GPS apps too.
I still have an old bluetooth GPS which I used use with my SE P990 (that did not lag and the CPU/memory suck on that device).
I might do some comparisons when I have time - anyone else here have an external GPS they could test too?

if it's really the poor graphics performance, how can we change this? can we use hardware acceleration in tomtom like in tony hawks? has someone tried to use wvga fix an set an other resolution while navigating? if it works better with a smaller resolution, it might be indeed the graphics performance.
This is an old war for all the kaiser-diamond-touch pro-x1 users. As you know is related with the Qualcomm drivers for the graphic card. Personally I think there isnt a solution. HTC and Qualcomm wont provide those drivers. One interesting news is that HTC wont join Qualcomm to design/build their next devices. I hope they learn of these issues. By now HTC says they dont design multimedia or games devices so they dont have to provice those drivers
Hello everyone.
I am going to buy htc desire soon. I have a query to ask. Please help me on this.
How would you rate the GPS on the Desire if i am going to use google maps? As is the speed. The screen view-ability etc.
The reason I ask this is that if it is not that good then I'll buy iPad 3G else the wifi version. I am really stuck with the decision. Please help me on this.

I am not sure about using it with google maps, but I have copilot and it works very good with that.
Also, comparing with HTC Diamond's GPS, the GPS in Desire is much much better. It locks the location even faster than my old Garmin Nuvi 350 that use sirf III.
The GPS in Google Maps is pretty spot on, and also works very well for Google Navigator too. The lock speed with assisted GPS is probably the fastest I've seen in a phone. Certainly better than my previous HTC Touch HD.
I've used 5 different HTC Devices with GPS Receivers throughout the years and the Desire beats them all. Time to get a fix is nearly 0 (Well okay, but it is veeery fast) and also very precise. Using it with google maps and Mobile Navigator and have never been happier with a GPS Device. Scrolling the Map in Google Maps is the smoothest i have seen on a mobile device (it is easily as fast as the iPhone, personally i think even faster) and it never loses the GPS Connection. I made a trip with my bike the other day, Desire in my Jacket and only took it out every 10 minutes or so, when heading towards an intersection where i had to turn and didn't know where to ;P It wakes incredibly fast from Standby, the Fix has never gone and your position is acurate again in an instance, not lags at all.
Yes, I can confirm all above, also sensitivity is excellent, I was able to fix inside my living room 3m far from window
+1. I use an app called GPS Test which shows you how many and where the satellites are you're connecting to. Also gives speed info. I'm shocked how quick it locks onto satellites. I use in on the bike and car with no problems.

Can anyone confirm how the "stand alone" GPS works by itself? What if there is no mobile data coverage available?
Stand alone gps is even better as long as u have good navigation software installed with maps. Like co pilot, motonav (igo for desire.). It's almost instant... well worth of money. Paid

Sent from my HTC Desire
Can also confirm that the GPS is superb. GPS Test from the market shows you number of satellites used & degree of accuracy. My Desire stabilises on 2-3m accuracy I'd hazard that stand-alone GPSs won't do any better than that, and I've only seen it lose GPS signal once... for about half a second.
Coming from a Touch Pro, this thing's GPS (along with absolutely everything else!) is a revelation!
I'm an avid cyclist, use the Desire with runkeeper & sportypal, it is spot on accurate with my rather expensive & well tuned bike computer.
I also use it with copilot and it works perfectly...

I usually get a lock when outside within 10th seconds maximum, compared with about 3 minutes on my Omnia without tweaks.

When You are roaming then MB prices are very high... so I understand using google maps is working great when You are in your home network.
What other GPS software (with maps stored on the Desire, not downloaded in real time) have You used and was it any good?
i think my old Hero was faster, but i could be i imagine it... Will traveling in high speed affect the lock time?

It won't be an issue upto 140 MPH, I can confirm that. Faster... I'm not sure. I've used the GPS facility for routes and disabled my TomTom over 60 times by now. Never once has it failed signal or lost tracking (in the UK).
I can confirm all the above positive sayings. Apps like Car Home / Navigator will assist you well. The GPS Test app is excellent (I use GPS Speedo and GPS2GoogleEarth at times too).

I want to compare Nexus S's GPS to Galaxy S's. So could anyone there make a simple track with Nexus S walking and driving for atleast 2km. If possible do the tracking with a Galaxy S tracking at the same time as well.
Thanks
I actually have both a Nexus S and Vibrant, so I could do this for you. Is there any particular app you have in mind to do it with?
I guess you can use MyTracks.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I did a 14km mountain bike ride with Runkeeper on, yesterday. Was my first try with the app (normally use MyTracks but this was my first ride since switching to the Nexus S). Not sure how to share it but this link is a start.
One thing I did notice is that the beginning of my ride included a 28 mile 'warp' from where I'd been using Google Maps the day before! I guess in future I need to give it a little more time establishing that initial fix before I press start. Luckily I was able to edit out that point to get the real route.
Please someone make a Mytracks tracking With a Nexus S and another phone (preferably HTC cause those have very good GPS units) and upload the results.
There you go.
I just made this one with my Nexus S:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U....555383,-44.264713&spn=0.002128,0.003484&z=19
Keep in mind that the sky was full of heavy clouds so I can't guarantee that the GPS was operating on its full accuracy.
A couple of months ago I made a track recording with my Motorola Milestone, here's the link:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U...900089483924351110.0004990b6c3698b559c65&z=14
When I first saw the Nexus S track i was like "holy sh*t this looks bad". But then I went to my old milestone track and it was almost the same. You can only see how bad it is once you zoom in a lot.

Based on these two I would say that the Nexus S GPS is still not good enough or its just the weather. I hope the latter.
I'll try to post one of my old tracks from the same location made with HTC Hero (custom ROM though) and Google MyTracks. I'd do it now but the interface is impossible on this netbook screen!
Anyway - for me the Nexus S gets a fix much faster and seems generally at least as accurate, possibly more so.
You will only get at best about 3.5m accuracy from a regular gps device without dgps (waas/egnos). No phones that I know of, support dgps. With dgps you can get accurate to about 0.9m
If you need more accuracy then there are external gps/bluetooth modules that have dgps and fast refresh rates, for about $80.

Worse GPS than N1
Anecdotally and without any quantifiable experimentation, but based on using mytracks with GPS extremely regularly for running, I can say the GPS in the Nexus S seems a bit worse thanin the Nexus One. I didn't have both in my possession simultaneously for long enough to do the same track with both but I have loads of old Nexus One tracked routes I could re-run with the Nexus S to compare. The N1 gave me trouble every once in a while too though and the clouds have been rowdy lately, possibly contributing, so I'm optimistic. It's bearable in any case other than seeming to take more of a battery drain (again, anecdotally).
OK, here's a bunch of tracks from my HTC Hero if you're interested in trying to compare them.
http://goo.gl/maps/XSG4
(For convenience, the Nexus S link from earlier is this)
As I say, based purely on my observation the Nexus S gets the fix faster. Having a zoomed-in look at the two maps would say to me they're both as accurate as I could wish for.
from what I understand, the gps chip in the ns is good in terms of performance, locks faster, keeps lock longer under low signal conditions etc but isn't necessarily any more accurate than any of the previous models wear. gps accuracy is purposely limited for civilian use and I believe most chips out there can achieve that accuracy as long as they are able to track the required number of satellites.

I agree with this. I use my gps and navigation all the time to drive around and the nexus s gps is typically 30 - 50ft behind the positioning marker. With my N1 it felt like the marker was about 10ft within my location.
Also I notice that the gps sometimes misplaces my postioning marker on the map and the compass points in the wrong direction. These arent problems I had with my N1 but perhaps because its cloudier now than when I had my N1.
I'd give the N1 gps a 9, and the NS gps a 6. What makes up for the weird accuracy issues is the bigger screen.
Thank you for all the replies. If at all possible, could someone still make one comparison with an external bluetooth gps, for example the nokia LD-3W. Also the higher update rate GPS's would be nice to compare.
As of the results, I'd conclude that Nexus S definitely has the same GPS chip and almost the same firmware as the SGS's, but antennas have definitely been improved. Atleast now the GPS on all SGS series devices, including the Nexus S, are capable of running a "satnav" properly. Now if I only could get my compass and accelerometer working on my SGS / JPX
I'm planning on getting an external bt GPS module for autocross, I'll report back then.

I find it quite "usable" these days, but I strongly agree it could be MUCH better. I get dropouts quite often when driving, and in comparison, my years-old Forerunner 305 seems to produce more consistent tracks when jogging.
I find it suspicious that those here who speak of the GPS as "excellent", never post any tracks showing it too.. So I can only assume the GPS is poor for everyone

As i have said before define usable and poor .
Quick lock without WiFi Driving GPS works .
Route tracking as near as i would want bearing in mind that my route tracking would be car use . Walking route tracking had no problems when i tested it .
I have posted tracks but their was no response .
GPS as good as my Nokia 5800 was and not as good as a Tom Tom stand alone GPS unit .
Not bothered to test it against my laptop and sirf kit .

I'm in no way saying the Galaxy's GPS is better than the Desire but........last week I was on top of a mountain skiing with my mate who has the Desire, I got a lock and good tracks with accurate average speed and so on he did not. My Galaxy locked within 10 seconds while the Desire took about 3 mins and then gave inacurate results. I was using Sports Tracker he was using Endomondo.
I'm now reasonably happy with my Galaxys GPS performance although I know it's not the best.
Video demo of the GPS, couple of picture-in-picture screencasts to show GPSinfo and the Navigation screen on the same route too (different trips, immediately following each other):

My first ever lock with each of the Note's I had (A-GPS enabled) was like 6-8 seconds or something, I was beyond surprised. Virtually all locks since then 2-4s range.
gps on note is amazing
right on target. 16 feet accurracy. didn't lose track even going to the worse curse ever. i am so happy the gps works good on this phone. My captivate worked only on certain mod with several tweeks. The note works out of the box with very good lock and accuracy.
The accompanying review part is up now.
