Moto X Play from Orange - locked or unlocked? - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So as Orange exist in more countries than my own and I know what they did to SONY devices (preZ2 i think), I thought that maybe one of You will tell me not to be worried.
I'm not writing about simlock, bu what I mean is lock which Orange set on fastboot connection (i know - stupid) on older Xperia's, meaning that there was no way to unlock it nor to flash kernel.
Did any of You has Moto X Play from Orange and can say that it unlocked?

Why don't you call Orange and ask them

I purchased my Moto X Play through the Orange South Africa Store. I can't see how it could be locked as I put in my Vodacom (South African Carrier) sim and it worked first time. That points to being unlocked. As to being locked for fastboot, I have no Idea. The best would be to contact them and find out.

Maybe I should write it before, I dont have simlock either (checked cards from few different providers), but more I was afraid with fastboot lock, but I think they dont play with it anymore, as some of the users from my country have device from orange and are modding it, so it should be alright.

I would be supper bummed if I cant use fastboot. I'm waiting out on rooting my phone as I'm waiting for the 6.0 update. But sooner or later I will definitely root my phone. I really hope there is no limitation on that.

That's what I'm afraid too, maybe less as others can use it, but as I know what they did before, it still is in my head.
I asked other Orange's Moto X Play's users on polish forum, but I think it should be OK.
About asking Orange: in my country they dont give a **** about You and always answer "we don't know", even If You tell them that something like this exist,

What do you mean by orange is it a phone carrier

And what?
They did it with Sony, so why not Motorola or Lenovo?
They don't have problems with paying sanctions from EU for simlocking their devices...

confused about "retail"

I already solved the issue, but was confused why I had to "unlock" my phone because I ordered it from google.com/phone
I would think retail would mean with a contract, with t-mobile.
I ordered the AT&T version.
I guess my question is what am i missing if anything and does somebody know what it is?
Well, this question has been asked and answered before... but here's the answer anyway...
There are 2 entirely different "unlocked" concepts...
1. Carrier unlocked - This allows you to use the phone on any GSM network.
2. OEM unlocked - This allows you to install custom ROMs on the phone.
If you paid $530+ for your phone without a contract, your phone is "carrier unlocked", but locked when it comes to the ROMs... it will only allow signed Google/HTC ROMs. When you "unlock" via fastboot, you override this and can install custom ROMs

No matter how many times I read this I can't entirely figure out what you are asking, sorry!
Are you saying you aren't sure why you had to "fastboot oem unlock" your phone? If you flashed a custom ROM or something then that is why you had to "unlock" it. It unlocks the bootloader to allow you to flash whatever you want on the phone. It has nothing to do with whether the phone is SIM Locked (locked to a specific carrier or not) if that's what you were thinking? No version of Nexus one to date is SIM Locked (subsidized or not).

Exactly. There's is NO such thing as a carrier/SIM locked Nexus One.
whether you buy with a plan or unsubsidized the phone will ALWAYS be CARRIER UNLOCKED. Get it right already people.

Hello Tattoo community! Need urgent advice to potential buyer :)

Hello,
Probably will buy this device tomorrow, used, dont sure ifs its unbranded or Vodafone (Portugal) branded.
I have a question ...
- If it's unbranded (and so on unlocked), there's anything I need to know (something in the firmware), so I can install "anything" I want?
- If its branded and sim locked... it's easy to unbrand and unlock? Should I take a look of something on the firmware?
Really appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Tiago
There is no good way yet to unlock the htc tattoo locked to orange uk except from using the ismart sim 2008. Besides the simlock problem, you have a smaller screen than other android devices. So some apps or games might not work properly.. but most of them do. Also you have limited access to the market, that is, you can access products that have been specified htc tattoo compliant only unless you root the device and install the cracked market app. Besides that everything is ok.

I never said it's tattoo orange uk... I said maybe its vodafone portugal tattoo...
smaller screen? what's the normal screen for tattoo ?
he ment its small screen, compared to other HTC phones, most phones got 3+ inches screen, tattoo is 2.8.
about unlocking - its ur rights to try put ur sim card in the phone before u buy it. Myn was unlocked, thought they sayd its locked to they network. At same time - they use same phones for selling as locked to they network with a contract, as same phones for selling it for full price...

I dont want to count with simcard... always had problems with it.
So its not easily possible to unlock and unbrand a tattoo ?
Dude, if I had the chance I would have bought a device which is easily upgradeable to another Android OS or other ROMS (maybe with different OS').
But returning to your issue:
Unbranding shouldn't be a problem (I removed Vodafone Germany branding), but with unlocking there are problems with certain providers. Just put your SIM in first and see if it boots, otherwise I would take another device if the tattoo should be locked.

But if I put my TMN sim card on Vodafone Tattoo, it's suppose to work ?
Not understood what you explained, sorry.
Some carriers sell phones that are locked to them, others sell unlocked phones.
Here in the UK for instance, vodafone phones are not locked and an HTC Tattoo bought from them can be used with any SIM. Ones sold by Orange are locked to them and can only be used with an Orange SIM.
I do not know if Vodafone in Portugal lock their phones or not, the simple way of checking is by trying your non vodafone SIM and seeing if it works.
Unlocking the Tattoo can be done but costs $15 or so I believe (although with the Desire they then charge you another $20 - a very dodgy practice), far better to buy one that's not locked in the first place unless you want to use it on the carrier it's locked to.
You posted a couple of days ago - have you already bought the phone? Was it unlocked? Or have you not bought it yet?

Now I understood.
Here in Portugal, ALL phones are SIM Locked. Unlock goes from 50$ to 150$.
That's why I asked if it's easy to do it by us.
HTCCode.com say on the front page that it costs $15 but people in the Desire forum are saying they are being told that their device costs more - but only after they've paid the $15.

Simlocked nexus one (SFR - Vodaphone)

I went into a retail store of SFR and asked them about the Nexus one. The woman told me that the phones where locked to SFR network.
That girl told me that SFR will only unlock the phones after 6 months. I'm leaving the country in 25 days... She also told me that if I wanted to unlock it before I'll have to make it unlocked somewhere else... so
I've been browsing the net and honestly, It's hard to know where I can get unlocking codes for nexus one. Most websites I found weren't looking very legit...
And most people still believe that nexus one is always unlocked...but since Vodafone got exclusivity in France they decided to lock the device...
So yeah, where/how can I unlock a nexus one? (Receiving unlock codes)
Have you actually tried another carrier's SIM on your nexus one? In Spain Vodafone sells the nexus one unlocked and I bet most of the representatives don't even know about it, since they lock pretty much every other phone.

I didn't bought one yet since I really need to be sure that I can unlock it before I leave. I can't tell if the girl is wrong about it but I called an other store and on the website, it's written that the phone is limited to SFR network. So unlike other EU countries. SFR apparently locked them.
I'd suggest getting a different sim from a friend and trying it out. I can't really believe they'd lock the N1 after all the publicity of it being an unlocked phone.

They are not locked, mine is a SFR version, and it's unlocked, no nexus one has ever been sold locked, not even the Korean versions.
SFR staff and the phone house will tell you it's locked because they don't know better and all the usual SFR pack phones are locked but it's not.
I confirm also, bought mine from SFR to use it with a Sim from Orange.
People at SFR say it is locked, which is wrong.
@Doume
Really? when did you buy it?
As far as I know, phone sold before july 24 (or something like that) where unlocked. They were available in many store but now new phones are only available in "Espace SFR". Tomorrow I should get one and will be able to confirm if they are locked or not.
All nexus ones are unlocked. Even the vodaphone ones.
I should receive my nexus one in 2 or 3 days, retail stores we out of stock again so I ordered it online. Will update once I get it.
Ok so,
[off topic]I canceled my order from sfr. On all the step before getting that phone from a online order. I didn't go farther than the identity validation in 5 days. [/off topic]
So this morning I got my nexus one from someone who got it as a replacement for a nokia. He sold it as he had a blackberry. Anyway, a brain new nexus one for a fraction of the price they sells it without contract.
I inserted my old fido (rogers) sim card and it appears to work. There is a little "SFR" drawn inside but thats it.
I got some error reading the gsm card but I think it's an other issue.
So yeah, even if everybody in the SFR society thinks that it is locked. It is apparently not. On a side note, just to show how uninformed they are. On the spec of the phone they says that the screens only has 16bit colors. While it has been proven to have 24bit and able to do 32bit opengl. 24 bit RGB and 8 bit alpha.
Anyway, I'm happy. I have it now.
ps: the problem with my order wasn't exactly sfr's fault. The people to blame are the people at fia-net.fr. 1 week to identify who I am to sell me an overpriced phone vs 1 random guy that sells me a brain new phone (unpackaged) for a fraction of the price. It just doesn't make sense. I say that, but I'm still in the process of the cancellation of my order.
I bought a n1 this morning at a SFR store, Build EPF21b, and no simlock. Just the little red SFR symbol inside the phone - thats all.
Just went to look my build version. I remember it was something similar to you. But now after update, it is now FRF91. Not sure if that means we will receive OTA updates from google or from Vodafone. One thing is that we have a different set of "stock" app than the US version.

Unlocking

This is probably a stupid question but is there an issue with unlocking a Desire HD from Vodafone UK? I was looking for code websites and one for instance said they couldn't supply codes for Desire HDs and Desire Zs etc...
If this is possible are there any recommendations for the UK?
Just ring vodaphone and tell em you wanna use a foreign sim when you go abroad they should give you unlock code
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I just unlocked mine here in Australia (from Vodaphone).
Maybe there is a similar site in the uk
hxxps://unlock.vodafone.com.au/voila/handsetunlock/self-service.html?method=selectService
Mine was free to unlock.
Now just to work out how to get rid of the Voda bootscreen as my system folder is still read only after perm-root and using Root Explorer.
Cheers
I should add that I'm not a Vodafone customer - bought it from eBay...
Worst case the seller said he could call them up which I though was quite amiable...

Mine is. Just tried an o2 SIM, worked perfectly.
chrisa86, please don't think I assume ur dumb but are you certain that it's locked? Because I've been on vodafone for quite some time now and mine always came lock free and happy I read smwr there's even some EU laws now against sim-locking phones that expensive ( correct me if im wrong ).
If after all that's the case, I suggest mancuk29's solution. Call, be nice and charming and they'll give u the unlock code.
gud luck

I think you have to S-OFF your Desire HD, this will allow you to read/write ALL flash
Maybe a fool question but let's assume that we have got a locked DHD (whether Vodafone or something else) and we could not get unlock code from carrier.
In this case, If we root + S-off + recovery + flash a new rom does this transaction make it unlocked?
No, sorry. SIM lock is very different.
AndyCr15, can u elaborate on that. What animal exactly simlock is?
Sorry, can't elaborate as I don't know how it works. All I can say is SIM unlock usually (always that I know of) has to be done using a code from a site or eBay. It's not part of the ROM.
Wow I did not know that Andy. Thanks for the heads up. So should be stay away from locked version.

Not in OZ. Mine was definately carrier locked to VHA. I went through the 'online' process and it was free. If I had of rang them on the phone to do it it would have cost me $75.
That's easy money for a company that sells phones to people with no idea, and as they believe, no option - whats online mean ??

Yeah done all that (new to Android) but still dont have r/w in the system folder. I can live with it though cause my phone is never off. It's summer, I will work on it when I am out of the pool.

Unlock code but no fastboot mode

Got rogers 2.3.2 and have a bootloader unlock code. Tried to get into fastboot and after much reading I think my phone might not even have a fastboot mode. My question is if anyone here thinks unlocking bootloader while being locked out of fastboot will ever be possible?
Am I stuck with what se and rogers gave me or will I ever taste custom rom goodness?
The FreeXperia team said they'll do nothing on phones with locked bootloaders, since they say that you can buy a carrier-free phone and unlock them yourself. So to say, they want to play by SE's rules.
R800x phones are a different league altogether, as you can't buy them SIM-free and SE has offered no BL unlock path at all for those phones.
I dont understand se rules. Why give me the unlock code but no path to unlock? Sure they gave me the keys to a nice car but putting fuel in it isnt possible? How does that make any sense?
They will give you the unlock path after your contract has expired. That's the logic. If you want to get the fully featured phone, buy it free from Sony directly.
and thats where my problem is, I bought the phone the day it came out straight from a rogers store at full price and not on any contract. unlocked carrier and put in my bell sim card and away I went.
sometimes it doesn't pay to be an early adopter
I bought it full-price as well... but carrier-free. People should do that more often, because carrier subsidies mean that you don't own your phone.

The issue is that, once the BL is unlocked, it removes all security from the phone including sim lock's ect. thats why only sim free phones are allowed to unlock

Yes but where can I get one? The sony stores here only provide sim locked ones. Even at full price. I checked online but their all rogers version unlocked.
I'm pretty sure that Rogers is the ONLY carrier in Canada to have the Xperia play which sucks cause I'm starting to get the feeling that unlocked bootloader will never happen for us sim-locked phones
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
I'm so sad now, i have a rogers play as well. but it does look like they are working on unlocking the bootloader for the verizon version of the play.
Always seems i'm on the wrong side of stuff. se should give us canadians a way to buy there phones and not have to go through a carrier. we apparently live in the free world yet have no options for this. when i lived ion the philippines i go go to sm (mall) and buy any se phone at the time untouched. in fact back in 2002 i bought a se t68i there and they would update the firmware for free.
Now i'm in the free world and se wont provide me a place to buy there handset unless it's through a carrier.
boy does this make me mad.....
ok im over it.
