This^ look at it this way. The nexus allready has great performance, it will handle any game you throw at it. (Unless not optimized for tegra 3) so wht else do you need? A kernel that gives amazing battery life. And what kernel is that..... \l/ TRINITY \l/

Ill say motley. I tried trinity kernel. Its good. But I getbetter performance,stability, and battery life with motley. All these battery screen shots really mean nothing. Why? Because none show real heavy use. I can easily get the same stats or better with light to moderate use. Show me some stats showing 8-10+ hrs of screen on time. With some heavy app or game usge. Anyone can use device for a few hours. Then leave it in deep sleep and show the same or better stats.
I've tried all the kernels out so far. They are all good. Its a matter of personal preference of features you want. Some pack things others don't. MOTLEY 'S ATM is the only linaro based kernel. So its using new additions/components. Better optimized. Benchmarks are cool but its real world performance that matters most.
I'm running stock rom with motley latest linaro based kernel with Zram, then CPU overclock @ 1.624ghz and gpu overclock @ 520mhz. I'm also undervolted -75mV across the board. So my temps stay low. Which equates to my device running at a higher performance speed longer.
The best thing about stock rom is I can measly flash different kernels and not have to worry about flashing a rom and setting my apps n all THST all over again. I can flash a kernel with no wipes and be good. Plus stock rom is the most stable ATM. Can't lie though, I am anxious to flash some roms. THST paranoid Android one looks really good. Along with the pure linaro based rom. That's the great thing about choices.

Asking who has the best kernel is like asking who is the best developer on xda. I don't think that's fair to the developers as they ALL work hard on roms or kernels. Forget the popularity contests.

I've got to say for me trinity is the best kernel for the Nexus 7, updated daily and great communication with the dev makes this an awesome kernel. The trinity toolbox app is the icing on the cake.

2. zram is a placibo. theres nothing there
3. stock rom is good, but i prefer a pure aosp build. no, they are not the same.

Thing with zram is, its not for getting higher benchmark scores or immediate performance. Its more so for heavy multitasking. Is been proven to help. The placebo is on people who think its supposed to provide some immediate result. If someone is a heavy multitasker on their device, then zram would benefit them. If you not much of a multitasker, then zram will show no Bendix for you.
You are right though, about trying out different kernels and such. Pure aosp rom sounds good. I just hate having to reset up my apps n stuff. I know titanium good for that but me personally, I'm waiting for roms to mature more and have most things, of not everything working. All roms so far seem to have something not working yet. Which is fine. Nature of the beast.

Trinity HANDS DOWN its been 3 hours on sleep and ITS still at 100%! + the ridiculous speed along with the power saving features. I may be new to the Nexus 7 scene but this is hands down to godly .

im not sure if gpus oc...but when u underclock..theres absolutely no performance difference..and saves battery too! 102mhz-1100mhz on demand/deadline..god like battery life. 4 hours screen time...still 45% left...shouldve been more if i didnt flash roms in between battery life. also under clocked, gta 3 and cs portable runs great and smooth still.
thanks to simms, I tried out trinity again. I flashed the latest builds. ran some benchmarks. for some reason, my device doesn't like the highest speed on benchmarks. it kept rebooting during them. so I stayed at 1.5ghz. governor I used was performance and on demand. for scheduler I ran with deadline. i forced cpu online and put fysnc on faster, thanks to TKT app. on quadrant, I was more concerned with seeing if I could achieve those crazy high I/O scores. which I did. my overall score was good but I've gotten higher on motley. it could be higher on this kernel if I get the 1.6ghz+ speed to stick. I was more impressed with my rl sqlite benchmark test. scored 18 seconds overall. which blows away the competition.
so I'm impressed with latest version of kernel. definitely better than the older build I ran of it from before. some things I've noticed though. where is the ability to undervolt at? no option in tkt app and the voltages tab disappeared from system tuner. also, this build gpu isn't overclocked. or might be better for me to say its definitely not running at 520mhz. I could tell this by the fps from quadrant. its running 59-60fps. on motley with 520mhz gpu I get 70-80+fps. just some things I noticed. not necessarily drawbacks. kernel runs very good. just got to figure how to make higher speed stick. since I can't seem to adjust voltages on this build, I can't increase voltage or undervolt it. if this can be done on trinity kernel, let me know how. its not showing voltages in tkt app or system tuner.

there are more features that are going to be added, theyre being added all the time. ask gnex owners how the options grew(same app btw, different devices running trinity see different features in the app. so you purchase it once, and use it on multi devices. btw, voltage adjustment will be added, remember how new development is on the n7. also, if other developers added the options into their kernels, theyed be able to use those features with their kernels

thats just trinitys method of rotating the kernels.. starts off in experimental(every kernel is tested to boot and run before it every appears here), then it graduates to prerelease if it makes the cut, and then if you guys like it it makes its way to release. its just that trinity development is so new here that there isnt a prerelease yet

I've underclocked mines to 1.1ghz also. battery doesn't want to budge from 100% so far..lol. it's barley sipping battery. the UI and browser is fluid n smooth at this underclock. which is a good thing. the real test will come once I play nova3 shortly. if it plays lag free on this lower speed then underclocking is a winner. I set my governor to interactive though. you get better battery life than ondemand. using deadline also. with fsync set to faster.

I understand nexus 7 is still infancy, developement wise. its cool. just wondering if those features were included since the option disappeared. I could undervolt or increase voltage on motley kernel. the tkt app would let me do it on THST kernel as the section shows for it. but I like using system tuner for undervolting when I was on motleys kernel. can't wait to see what new features get added. plus once I get my new phone, hopefully there'll be a trinity kernel out for it so I can use tkt app with it. the build is very good.

EDIT: Yes, emailing, tapatalk, browsing for laptop and not finding any, reading news in Pulse and flipboard, tweetcaster and testing slice(s?), gtalk, not heavy usage obviously. Screen wasn't on unless The Seven was used though.

I wanted to get everyone's feedback and experiences between the 3 kernels. I realize that every device behaves differently, but was curious about which ones people have tried, if they found any cool things about specific ones they really liked Or if you wanted to share your experience about the latest build.

Trinity and franco are about the same, but trinity>franco.
KTmanta is in a totally different league, it offers total customization and imo is the best kernel just because of that.
Franco and Trinity are all about performance where ktmanta is about battery optimizations and customizations.
I haven't used Franco or trinity in a while, I know they score higher in benchmarks if that means anything at all.

I think everyone knows my preference, but they are all good kernels. Unfortunately this tablet is not on Franco's priority list and does not see much development. I dont believe it has a 4.3 compatible version yet and the last release has a serious bug that causes SoD for most people.
I like Trinity and KManta for different reasons (those stated above). If I need to squeeze out battery life, I go with KManta and tweak the settings accordingly. But for my day-to-day use, I like Trinity for its smoothness. Just my two cents

How would you guys describe KTManta when just using the stock values? When you guys say "customization", do you guys mean the voltage settings and stuff like that? I've been flashing for years, but have never really understood how that worked. Which is funny, because I am an experienced PC overclocker. People say the concept is very similar. If KTManta's customization options were removed, would it be then comparable to Trinity? Or would it still be better without all the options?
Would you guys say Trinity still has decent battery life? Compared to KTManta at stock values?
Which one does Chrome work the best with?

Stock for stock Trinity is better because Morfic hardcodes overclock and undervolt values into the kernel and sets up all that stuff as his stock settings for the kernel. KTManta allows you to do those things and WAY more, but does not set them up as stock values because Ktoonsez prefers to keep the default settings for his kernel closer to the default settings of the stock AOSP kernel. So while Trinity may have -50mv undervolt to everything and a GPU overclock of 620MHz (I think that is the speed?), KTManta allows you to go +/- 200 mv to any frequency step for CPU or GPU that you feel like and also allows OC to 2.1GHz on CPU and 720MHz on the GPU if you want to, as well as RAM OC if you want to, and control of the scaling of every part of the chipset, again if you *want* to. But it doesnt set any custom stuff as default since everyone's device is unique and people want to do different things with it. That is why we have pre-made settings available from various users so that you can load custom values to try out without having to go through a bunch of experimentation yourself.

I'm hoping that I can assist you with this topic.
First off, regarding the kernel you have plenty of choices. There are two, however, that I'd recommend.
1. Dorimanx Kernel. That kernel is absolutely amazing with LOTS of tweaks, thermal protection, ad-blocker, allows overclocking to 2.8Ghz and much much more. I can't list all the features because they are so many. But there's one thing in particular - it's fast. Dorimanx has created a hybrid kernel from 3.4.xxx and 3.10.y source codes. This is my go-to kernel.
2. Bruce Kernel. It's a modified stock kernel with Bruce's own tweaks. It's fast, very battery friendly but lacks customisation. It also doesn't have thermal protection or any thermal throttling.
Now to your other questions:
Yes, Cloudy 1.5 should be the latest.
I wouldn't mess with the ROM thermal protection found in hidden menu. The gain in speed is most likely negligible but you make your phone more prone to heat damage.
Ondemand governor is great for smoothness, but you'll have a ton of options if you decide to use dorimanx. I use alucard because it's the sweet spot between amazing battery performance and smoothness.
You can install a new kernel without any wipes. Kernel doesn't interfere with ROM as such and you don't have to disable anything. A Kernel is basically what makes software and hardware work together.

I just flashed Dorimanx, and without knowing too much on how to tweak it (more on that later), it is really smooth. I am keeping it!

OK, great to know, it is so often repeated online that I used to have it. It is now off, absolutely no noticeable difference!

Thanks. Flashed perfectly, twice (I had trickster mod on and wasn't sure what it reset at boot, so uninstalled it and re-installed Dorimanx.)
Got 1040/2900 on geekbench even if that is not really what I care about. I had 950/2750 before, not that much noticeable difference in %.

OK, we're onto kernel tweaks , I have a few questions:
I discovered that I had STweaks installed, so let's use that.
1) Apart from governor alucard, what other settings should I apply? You mention thermal controls. I expect the defaults of STweaks are OK? If not, what should I do?
2) I found a GPU governor, should I do something there to have better performance?
3) my real goal is to achieve super smoothness when interacting with the phone, I don't play high CPU 3D games or anything like that. I want the phone to react instantly when I press somewhere or open something or press home or recent apps. Any advice? I modified touch boost frequency...
4) if I "reset settings to default" in STweaks, will it reset to Dorimanx' installed default as I just installed the kernel?
5) so that I don't bother anyone anymore, is there a manual about all these tweaks in Dorimanx/STweaks?

I use 2x intelliactive, 2x alucard, alicard HP, max freq 2.3, 2.3, 1.9, 1.9, gpu 100-533, i/0 read 1024, dirty tatios 5%/10%

No mate, I said that's settings for u, u said u don't care about battery, so I tried to give u the best settings I can come up with for performance, I myself use 3 cores max, all 2,3 ghz 1 core boost, Alucard on-demand Alucard. 1024. 100 320 GPU. It's pretty smooth with art. But if I wouldn't care about battery, I would do the settings I told u. Hehe

I learned to care more about battery I realized that it is really smooth anyway. I have a lot of SOT daily (movies, etc) and realized that using performance settings just drains too quickly and is not needed.
I do put animations to x0.5 (transition animation to OFF).
What I am really struggling with is home redraws... A bit better now, but they used to be 1000x times a day.
I would run with ART but it takes a lot more memory, and with my 16 GB I don't have enough memory left when running ART.
Buddy, I am on 16 too. I had 8.5 hours sot with art and cloudy 2.1!! I use nova launcher and I am happier with it can give it a try

I have a few very large apps (navigon, games,...) they take 2-3 GB.
I al so have movies, remaining is only 1.3 GB.
If i want to backup ROM i need to delete obb files, etc. With ART i will have nothing left!
Tried niva but didn't like it. Will try apex again maybe, but i really like the look of G3 home.
Hmm, I see. I didnt know that internal memory and has a thing to do ART, I just made it ART and everything was ok. Launcher is a matter of taste I guess. For lg launcher, I read that there are some hidden settings to lock it in RAM, so that it doesnt redraw that often, maybe u can take a look for that. Hope to share more information for better experience with our phones

one question... how to REALLY TEST and compare a kernel?
sometimes adding and modding the phone with custom rom, kernel, greenify and other manual modded cpu governor etc...... it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to understand if the perfornance, or battery life is affected by a kernel or something else.
A person could obtain a bad battery life but the culprit could be ANYTHING.....
so IMHO the easiest way to compare a kernel is the numbers of features and OPTIONS that allows it.... something like how many governor, i/o schedulers , tcp algorithms, dt2w..... and so on... because a PERFECT kernel... could be perfect in some roms.... and worse on others.....
there are too many complications about the number of apps, which apps, to use greenify or naptime/forcedoze , and a possible incompatibility with a specific ROM with specific kernel.
after all........ maybe the simpler test is to keep the same configuration of the rom for at least 1 week, make a nandroid twrp backup, flash 1 kernel, keep it 1 week ( and see results), then restore twrp with stock kernel/rom , then flash the second one kernel, keep 1 week, then restore backup, test 3rd kernel.... and so on? making it sure NOTHING CHANGE, no greenify change... no gaggressive doze setting change....
it would be nice if other people would write here they combination of precise KERNEL + ROM used to achieve a great battery life and SOT.......
No doubt all these kernels are well tuned and devs are making them better & better every day. I always use RADON KERNEL and it works with every rom just perfect, never tried AGNI though, two days back I flashed ElementX and Franco kernel but I noticed two big cores are either going "offline" or shutting them off permanently. @franciscofranco replied those two cores were thermal throttled or something (may be....) but after RADON I didn't noticed that issue, all 6cores are back online . So for now I'm sticking with radon I'll flash FrancoKernel next week and see if thingd sorted out..
Most off all I think we kenzo users are blessed to have all these big names in development thread.

About Other kernel , I did not use them for a long time . So I do not understand.

Battery and performance are undeniably affected by your kernel.
For example, the battery life on Nitrogen OS kernel is amazing, and the reason for that is, reduced performance. It's not slow, it's smooth really, but it's slower than Radon's balanced configuration.
And I think your argument that a kernel can be judged by the number of features, governors and schedulers it includes is wrong, because you don't need multiple governors or schedulers to get a good experience.
At one time, you'll only be using one, and that's why the stock configuration of the kernel matters.
I think every custom kernel has their advantages and disadvantages.
All we need to do is tuning it.
For example, I use Franco kernel and I changed the input boost ms for better responsive.
Or I use nitrogen kernel and tuning the governor for better performance.
However, I choose latest ex kernel manager app to tuning the kernel. It's more friendly ui and more reliable.
And the best thing is latest version of radon/franco/exkernel/nitrogen/agni has unified fp support.

So I wanted to ask if anyone here has already compiled or is willing to compile the latest stock kernel (from 3.6.1) with no other features except kcal controls. Because me and other OP2 users feel that battery life is best on stock kernel but the washed out display is absolutely disgusting. Also if it's not possible just us know, thanks in advance!

Did you try boeffla's kernel? gives much better battery life than stock for me (1/3 longer, in any scenario i tested it).
If you still want to have stock kernel here are the kcal commits. just set up Virtualbox Ubuntu, set up build environment , download official op kernel source (the 6.0.0 version!) and cherry-pick the commits (google it).
If the effort is not worth it, use boeffla's or stock without Kcal.
I can try to help you if you're stuck, but mind that i'm just starting with compiling stuff myself.

Yeah man I have tried boeffla. Performance is okay but battery isn't as good as stock imho. Maybe my settings affected it. Can you tell me which version of boeffla you use and what settings so maybe I can replicate your results. Thanks man.

Sure, i use boeffla 2.4-beta5, interactive battery extreme governor (u can tweak max frequency on little to 1200mhz), set little cores (i use 2, you can set it to 3-4 for more performance) set big cores to min0, max0 (if you need power to play games etc. set to min0 max 1-2) GPU underclocked to 27mhz, boost disabled, governor adreno (or powersave, might gives lags)
Further i installed xposed, greenify, amplify (there is a free version, but u have to compile it by yourself--> easiest with android studio).
And i followed this thread to maximize my battery life.
Tried several rom and kernel combinations, with this setup i get a sot of 5-6h with 48h of not charging or 7-8h in less than 24h. But on Lineage 13 its even better... (trying to compile a custom oxygenos, debloated, without playstore, F2FS capable right now but not able to activate F2FS)
If you're interested in the ext4 image, tell me (its untested though).

Damn dude these settings sound a bit extreme doesn't your phone lag like hell lol. And oh hey that sounds really interesting! Is it based off 3.6.1? And what kernel have you implemented it with. Right now I'm testing HalogenOS (loving it so far) but when I feel like switching again I would love to try your build. Link me!

I don't even have microlags (with other kernels and this settings it lags like hell, idk why boeffla doesn't)
However, app opening speed and switching between apps is a bit slower than usual).
Idk what the official source's base is (i guess 3.5.8) as i could'nt boot it up yet. Kernel is original kernel (with F2FS activated by me), i'll change this when it boots with f2fs.
