Sorry to say but that might be just arrogant like anything. Each developer was a "noob" once upon also,if you want to post a tutorial you don't expect everyone to know it already (what's the use of tutorial then?). Maybe you should try making people better at doing Android Development instead of calling them "noob".
Just a friendly suggestion.

This is my easy-rooter for the Thunderbolt. I do not personally have a thunderbolt but I have tested it and fixed as many problems as I could. As far as I'm aware this will only work with firmware versions lower than version 1.12.605.9.
If adb does not see your device try installing the htc sync drivers. If that doesn't wok install PDA.net. If it still does not register please post here. If you have a 64-bit version of windows replace the files in the rar with these

Hey man, I'm new so can't post in dev forum.
Your method worked for me - one thing I found. It was hanging at step 1 like some folks have reported, pushing the files (could see .ZIP on SD card), but would fail to reboot. This happened several times with Fast Boot enable under Settings>Applications. When I unchecked Fast Boot and re-ran Step 1 it worked first try. Couldn't tell you why or if just coincidence, but might help others.
Cheers.

For those of you who are interested in how this method works, here's the explanation. I will be focusing on what the program does, not user interaction so much except where necessary.
Push busybox, psneuter,and misc.img to /data/local/
Push PG05IMG_downgrade.zip to /sdcard and rename to PG05IMG.zip
chmod psneuter and busybox
execute psneuter
check the md5 hash of misc.img
flash misc.img to /dev/block/mmcblk0p17 if the hash is c88dd947eb3b36eec90503a3525ae0de
reboot into the bootloader
press power to enter bootloader and flash PG05IMG.zip (done by user)
once back in android:
remove PG05IMG.zip
push busybox, psneuter, and wpthis to /data/local
chmod all 3 files
run psneuter
run wpthis
push the engineering hboot(hbooteng.nb0) to /data/local/
check the md5 of the hboot file (it should be 6991368ee2deaf182048a3ed9d3c0fcb)
if it is flash hbooteng.nb0 to /dev/block/mmcblk0p18
push the PG05IMG.zip file to /sdcard
reboot into the bootloader
again press power and flash PG05IMG.zip (done by user)
push su, busybox, and psneuter to /data/local
chmod psneuter and busybox
run psneuter
mount /system as read/write (rw)
copy su to /system/xbin/su
chown and chmod su
install superuser and RomManager

I do recommend learning ADB as it is quite helpful but I realize that for some people that is a daunting task at first glance. I remember being a n00b and this will allow you to fully utilize your phone while still learning at your own pace on the side.
I am attaching just the updated exe.
Great idea showing what happens. Cool that you put something together for TBOLT owners, I just hope people will try and figure out what is going on when they use this.
After seeing a lot of issues people having with setting up adb I guess I should share this link... ADB For Dummies by AndroidSamurai
Even has an app to set everything up in the right spot.
This is a great thread on altering the android_winusb.inf for compatibility with Thunderbolt (adb driver).
<open>Can of Worms</open>
Thanks for the hard work.
One of the conditions for release was that I explain what happend. Hope this helps people out.
Nicely done. thanks for your hard work and knowledge. Now to get adb up and running finally.
You're welcome, and if the program functions properly you shouldn't need to setup adb beforehand as it comes with the necessary files for interaction. If it doesn't work properly try the debugging steps I posted in the OP and if that doesn't work setting up adb as a system command (adding the tools folder to PATH) should fix things.
^Thank you kind sir. I plan on giving this a spin tonight.
Ooking o walk a friend through this.later on tonight. And he camt boot into to the bootloader so im anxious to hear any feedback about this. If u guys dont mind please post anything you feel needs to be known about this, or just post that it rocks ass

Hey guys, I didn't think about it when I created the thread but I want to have a bit of a poll here. If it works post here letting us know, and I'm fairly certain if there's a problem I'll hear about it so I don't think I need to say anything about posting them
Don't let dbzfanatic marginalize himself, don't forget some donations for him. (kinda hard to find his link in his post).
I hope it won't brick any phones. You're up on AP now - http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...en-tried-and-true-meets-new-and-blazing-fast/
I saw that. In my test group I had no reports of bricks, just random quirks which I have sense fixed (except those listed in the OP).
need to find an excuse to get off work early now...
Is firmware version the same as software number ? . My software number is 1.12.605.6 .
Yes it's the same, you should be fine to use this.
Looks awesome, but I'll still wait until all of the kinks have been worked out.
Since this uses the same method as manual root, it SHOULD continue to work until gingerbread.
awesome, cant wait to get outta work!
Does this wipe the phone like the manual adb does?
Yes, it's exactly the same method, just automated to make things easier.
BTW what do you mean "ADB needs to be setup as a system command"?
My ADB works properly and I can see the device so I assume that's the one I'd need to download and not the one that says "ADB need not be previously setup"?

Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.6 (4.5.141) - The Complete Guide

Having just purchased another Atrix that was running stock Gingerbread 2.3.6 (4.5.141), I was frustrated by the lack of a complete rooting guide and appropriate files. There is a guide in this forum (Link) which is based on an article from Android Advice (Link), but I noticed that both lack a lot of basic information for the inexperienced user. Also, the zip file available from Android Advice was missing a key file (Superuser!). So, I made a guide.
This may look complicated, but is super easy. If you don't feel comfortable using this method, you can use this automated tool (yes, it works on 4.5.141). It won't be as satisfying, or even feel good. You won't learn anything, but you will be rooted. Download tool here (link in OP is broken).
Pre-work:
1) Read the xda Atrix Beginners Guide (then read it again)! (Link)
2) Download and install 7zip. (Link)
3) If they are not already installed on your PC, download and install the Atrix drivers for Windows. (Link)
4) Download the attached files (sorry, had to break them in to two files due to forum size constraints). Create a new folder on your hard drive named "Android" (c:\Android). Extract both attached zip files to this folder (all the files need to be in "Android", not in a sub folder).
5) On your phone go to Settings, Applications, Development, then tick USB Debugging.
Notes:
Do not type quotes.
After each command hit enter.
Be mindful of spaces.
You can simply copy each command and paste in to the command prompt.
If you encounter any errors after entering a command, just ignore and keep going (assuming you entered the command properly).
Work:
1) Attach your phone to the PC via USB. In the USB settings make sure USB Mass Storage is selected.
2) Reboot phone while holding volume down until you see "fastboot".
3) Press volume up to initiate fastboot.
4) On your PC click the Start menu, then in the search box type "cmd"
5) In the command prompt type "cd c:/android"
6) "fastboot.exe flash preinstall preinstall.img"
7) "fastboot.exe reboot"
8) Wait for phone to reboot.
9) "adb shell"
10) "/preinstall/dosu". If you get an error (I did), type "/preinstall/su"
11) "/bin/mount -o remount,rw /system"
12) cp /preinstall/su /system/bin/"
13) "chmod 6755 /system/bin/su"
14) "PATH=/system/bin:$PATH pm install /preinstall/Superuser.apk"
15) Reboot phone.
16) On your phone go to your apps and make sure the Superuser icon is there. Open the app, go to settings, then update the SU binary.
17) Open a terminal emulator, then type "su" and hit enter. You should see "#" if you are rooted. Or, download Root Checker from the Play Store.
My phone rebooted itself after step 11, so I had to re-open the adb shell.
I copied and pasted the text from the command prompt for reference (attached).
If I missed anything or have any errors, let me know and I will update the post.
Good luck!
Note: If you experience problems with updating superuser after rooting, try going in to Manage Applications and clear Superuser data. If that doesn't work go to the Play Store and Install Superuser Update Fixer.

Thanks for the information. Just wanted to do this, and while reading the procedure, I found that there is no Superuser.apk in the attachments. Do I have to get it from some other place.
Thanks

Well for me what happen is down at the bottom he has two links for two of the files you need to zip. in one of those, there is a superuser file. When doing the cmd commands at the end you will end up installing the superuser. The best thing to do which really helped me was to download the command prompt text file, that way you can mimic exactly what you see. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the wonderful world of messing with your phone!
You really can't harm your phone trying to root it. If you type a command wrong, just re-type it. No worries. There are lots of good guides out there for whatever you want to do. The noob guide (linked on the first page) is a great place to start. And there are plenty of members willing to help.

Don't unlock your bootloader if you think you will want official Moto ICS update (major hard brick risk).

[Guide]Suggestion For S-off On 1.55 HBoot Using Ubuntu---Step by step with pictures

I see so many having problems trying to get S-off on the 1.55 HBoot. Some have had none but I've posted this response so many times I thought I'd make my own post and hopefully people's searches will direct them here and it helps them.
I am no developer or coder or anything but a techno junkie. I have no linux experience except what I've taught myself so be sure if this 47 year old, self taught mother can do this then anyone can.
Just take your time, pay attention to what you're doing, and read everything before you hit go.
I had no luck with rumrunner on Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1. Drivers were never right. Couldn't get rid of HTC one sync. So I finally got myself
(1) a copy of 32bit Ubuntu. NOT 64!! http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
(2) no need to install-boot into it as if trying it (IMAGE 3)
(3) grab rumrunner for Ubuntu (linux) http://rumrunner.us/
(4) drivers NOT needed
(5) turn off fastboot (IMAGE 2) You should also turn off any lockscreen security....
(6) turn on USB debugging in development settings (IMAGE 1) You should also turn off any lockscreen securtiy
(7) run rumrunner (instructions are on the rumrunner site) paying attention in case extra permissions are required by superuser http://rumrunner.us/instructions/ (See Ubuntu section below)
(8) sat back and watched the magic. Worked the first time.
I know others have had zero issues but some of us have had nothing but nightmares. This is who I'm sharing this for.
I hope it helps... Even just one!
Have fun all!
IF BY CHANCE YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH ADB OR FASTBOOT IN UBUNTU SEEING YOUR DEVICE, TYPE sudo BEFORE YOUR COMMANDS. IT WANTS PERMISSION TO ACCEPT YOUR COMMANDS. WHEN YOU TYPE sudo THEN YOUR PASSWORD YOU ARE GRANTING THOSE PERMISSIONS. SOMETIMES THE ISSUE WON'T APPEAR TIL YOU GET INTO FASTBOOT. SO CHECK FIRST BY TYPING IN adb devices WHEN YOU FIRST OPEN THE TERMINAL. IF YOU GET A SERIAL NUMBER YOU SHOULD BE FINE. AFTER YOU GET INTO BOOTLOADER, TYPE fastboot devices IF YOU GET A "no permission" ERROR THEN YOU NEED TO TYPE sudo BEFORE all INSTRUCTIONS. SOME VERSIONS OF LINUX HAVE AN SU TERMINAL. THAT WOULD BE THE BEST TO USE AS IT REQUIRES ROOT/PERMISSION TO EVEN START AND WILL MAINTAIN THOSE PERMISSIONS THROUGHOUT.
UBUNTU STEPS.....
Image 3- Boot into Ubuntu
Image 4- Download Linux version of rumrunner
Image 5- Extract Rumrunner (Right click on the zip and select extract here...I left it in the Downloads folder)
Image 6- Inside the extracted Rumrunner file
Image 7- Open Terminal in Ubuntu (Top left gear like symbol, click it and a search bar will appear, start typing terminal, it will appear below the bar, just select it)
Image 8- You need to install adb fastboot these are the instructions you need to type in the terminal you just opened. Type one line at a time and press enter after each. Allow Ubuntu to do it's stuff.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
Image 9-12 Shows how the terminal should look as it finds, downloads and install the appropriate files.
Image 13- After the downloads are finish you can check to make sure things were installed correctly. Type “adb” and your screen should look like this
Image 14- Type “fastboot” and this is the information that should appear.
Image 15- To make sure your device is seen type “adb devices” and it should show devices with a serial number.
Image 16- Now make your way in the terminal to your downloads folder and into the rumrunner folder by typing the following BOLDED commands in the terminal
[email protected]:~$ cd Downloads
[email protected]:~/Downloads$ cd rumrunner_HTC_0.5.0
[email protected]:~/Downloads/rumrunner_HTC_0.5.0$
(This line simply indicates you are in the rumrunner folder)
Image 17- Now you need to run the command to get the party started...it is in bold
[email protected]:~/Downloads/rumrunner_HTC_0.5.0$ sudo ./soju
Image 18- Confirm you understand what it is you're doing or at the very least you are willing and accept the risks by typing “Yes”. It must be “Yes”. It will not accept yes, y, ok or anything else. The Y must be a captial.
Image 19- After you type Yes the second time things get under way. Be patient. It may take a bit of time. Just pay attention in case you are asked for extra permissions.
Image 20- S-Off verification
After the second Yes rumrunner does it's stuff...it can take a while. Be patient. Pay attention in case you need to give permission. DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR PHONE until you either get the ok or are told it failed.
This is as clear as I can be and I hope it makes it even easier....
Suggested by @chp , you may need to go into software centre (selected by opening the search bar again and typing software centre), edit tab, software resources and making sure that "Community-maintained free and open-source software (universe)" is selected.
ALSO, PLEASE GIVE CREDIT IF YOU USE THIS. FEEL FREE TO SHARE IT, JUST LET PEOPLE KNOW WHO ACTUALLY TOOK THE TIME TO CREATE IT. UNLIKE THIS PERSON... http://www.usofttech.com/t152630.html , WHO HAS EVEN TURNED OFF REGISTRATION SO I CAN'T EVEN MAKE IT KNOWN THERE.

I just ran through this myself, after having no luck in Windows. One thing that's missing... you need to enable 'universe' in Software Center.
Open dash and type software center
On the Edit menu, select Software Sources and enable "Community-maintained free and open-source software (universe)"
Then, you'll be able to install the android tools.

On the Edit menu, select Software Sources and enable "Community-maintained free and open-source software (universe)"
Then, you'll be able to install the android tools.

Thanks for that in case anyone needs to do this... I didn't. I followed exactly as in my OP but this is a good to know in case someone runs into issues.

I think that's needed for 13.10 right? on 12.04 LTS, the other repository should work fine. (at least it does for me)

Newbie One-Click (actually terminal command) root!

<rant> I am annoyed at how many Windows users there are lurking here -- I mean, you can't even develop Android with Windows!!! Why is everything I find Windows oriented with no Linux option? </rant>
Here is the one click root zip with a (less verbose) Linux sh script. To quote the other thread,

You need ADB and fastboot installed first. Your distro has it, Google it.
Just unzip, and run:
Code:
chmod +x root.sh
./root.sh
And that's literally it. Thanks to the other people who found the files and wrote the commands

hello..may explain further on how to do this method? is it terminal on the phone or on linux or on the windows (cmd)? and where's the zip file?
Not a newbie tutorial at all. You might want to appropriately title this or add instructions to make it newbie friendly.

It's a Linux sh script, so you run it in the Linux terminal. It's the same directions as the other tools, just for Linux

The phone takes a moment to reboot into fastboot mode, so the script has it wait for 30 seconds. Can you confirm that still nothing happens after 30 seconds? And the phone does boot into bootloader mode? If so, type
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
into your terminal and see if it shows up. If it's not showing up you may have a problem with fastboot itself.
This seems to work (though the fastboot in Debian is too old, I needed to download a newer version) - but I end up with no Superuser app. What's wrong?
Worked perfectly for my memo pad 7 (176cx) Thank you so much!!

Sorry for the late reply -- XDA didn't seem to notify me of a new post :/
Did you see all of the fastboot messages go by in both the terminal and the phone's screen? Did everything say "OKAY"? Did you try installing SuperSU from the Play Store to see if it rooted?

Yep, I think it was OKAY on all commands. I pulled in SuperSU from the store and all root functionality seems okay as well.
I don't understand much of what the script does, especially how
Code:
fastboot flash /system/bin/partlink supersu.tgz
is supposed to work - but then, I haven't looked too closely.
Awesome, really glad it worked out for you! And yeah, I'm not entirely sure -- usually gaining root is based on an exploit so I'd guess that it replaces system binaries with modified ones to allow root access, but haven't rooted many phones so not sure how it generally works. Especially
Code:
fastboot oem start_partitioning
Thanks for this. I tried other one clicks on my fedora 22 box and kept getting fastboot errors. This one worked flawlessly.
Interesting...
The approach is quite a bit different to the usual tethered TWRP suspects as the exploit tries to overwrite quite a few binaries. Naturally I had to try it on my ME572C and unfortunately it couldn't write a single one of those binaries.

I know, but at some point I would hope that Asus gets an f'ing clue to develop things once and use that across multiple devices running similar hardware. It's already funny how my ME176C and ME572C run completely different Android implementations (one rootable, the other not) despite being somewhat similar.
It's probably a too obvious question, but as the tutorial is for newbies I feel allowed to do:
Do I need to have an unlocked bootloader to succeed in the rooting ? The reason for asking is that the script successfully restart the phone but then the fastboot commands don't work, I get stuck at "waiting for device".
Thanks.

Root ANY LG G4 Variant 100% Success Directives | Root Injection | Less Bricks

Hi everyone. As I found out there's root for the G4 but doing this isn't easy especially if your variant is hard to find or has less users. This may result in you waiting for longer than you should. This thread is for those who can take things into their own hands and do it themselves. The tools are available everywhere but I'll give you the best order and steps. I'm using the China LG G4 H818 Dual SIM variant but this method is UNIVERSAL FOR ALL LG G4s.
The process will involve extracting a system image, injecting root and reflashing this image. Most of the steps are effortless and need just copy and paste with keen eyes. Do it slowly. You need an Ubuntu installation for step 2 of this 3-step tutorial. I used universal USB installer and put in on my 8GB USB. Anywhere will do so far as it boots&works. Beware this thread is not dumb-proof but this will not wipe your data or void your warranty if done successfully.
Step 1 -> Getting the proper system image.
Check here and skip to step 3 if you have your rootedsystem.img
>Don't worry because this doesn't require searching. It is from your device. Every device has a system partition and this method will pull it out as an image without root required.
1--Make sure all drivers are installed properly. I'll not be talking about this. We're on XDA not kindergarten.
2--Download the LG_root file or send command file from here and extract it. US Carrier specific check here
3--Put your device in download mode and connect it to your PC.
4--Open(double-click duh) port.bat and make sure to write down the number after com. There maybe different com numbers but choose the com on the DIAG1 line and write down that number. This is important.
5--Hold shift and right-click in any empty space in the extracted folder. Choose open command windows here.
6-- In that copy and paste this
Code:
[FONT=Lucida Console][COLOR=#ff8c00]Send_Command.exe \\.\COM[/COLOR][COLOR=#00ff00][*insert your number here][/COLOR][/FONT]
7--Now you're in send command mode. Nothing looks different on your phone but that's ok. It should just remain in download mode.
8-- On the computer screen in the window you now see #.
9--Now in this post copy the Backup system to internal storage command specific to your device model number. Check in you settings >general >about if in doubt. This is the most important step. Copy the whole line of code. Highlight with your mouse, select everything on the line and copy.
10--You didn't come all this way to fail so do it. Remember it is device model specific.
11-- Paste it in the command window and hit enter. It should take a while so wait until you see#reappear.
12--Now typeLEAVEall in capital letters. Your device will reboot. Check using the file manager if you have a file called system.img in your internal storage. If yes step 2 is next and you did well. If no repeat it and follow the steps properly. Make sure drivers are installed especially windows 10/8/8.1 users. Check device manager
Step 2 -> Root injection.
1--Prepare your Ubuntu USB or virtual machine or computer.
2--Download inject_root zip from here and extract.
3--Copy the system.img from your phone to the extracted inject_root folder on your PC.
4-Reboot into Ubuntu.
5--Here open a terminal.
6--Gain root access on Ubuntu by typing or copy and paste sudo -i
7--You should either be asked for your password which you have to enter or if you used a USB drive like me you'll see the name change to[email protected]
8--Navigate to the inject_root folder by using cd commands. This can also be done by typing cd then [space] then dragging and dropping the folder into the terminal and hitting enter.
9--You'll now see the name in the terminal become longer with the name of the folder in it.
10--Now type chmod +x autoroot.sh
11--Hit enter then sudo ./autoroot.sh
12--If you get any thing like command not recognized or something of the sort use sudo sh autoroot.sh
-That worked for me.
13--If you're successful the name of the file should change from system.img torootedsystem.img
-Please note don't rename the files. Leave them as they are.
14--Now go back to Windows let's finish this.
Step 3 ->Root
1--Transfer the rootedsytem.img to your phones internal storage.
2--Put your phone in download mode and connect it to your PC.
3--Get into send command mode as in step one.
-Put your device in download mode and connect it to your PC.
-Open port.bat and make sure to write down the number after com. There maybe different com numbers but choose the one that has DIAG1 on the same line as it. Note it down this is important.
-Hold shift and right click in any empty space in the extracted folder. Choose open command windows here.
- In that copy and paste this
Send_Command.exe \\.\COM[*insert your number here]
-Now you're in send command mode. Nothing looks different on your phone but it's find. It should just remain in download mode.
4-Now grab your command to flash system.img line of code from this post. It isn't the same as step one. Copy that an paste in the command window. Make sure it is for your device. They are model specific.
5--This should take a while so wait until you see the # again.
6--After thatLEAVEand upon reboot you should have root.
To Un-root just flash a KDZ file compatible with your device here.

Fantastic. This method will also ease devs for future rooted firmwares. I really cannot see LG being able to patch this, since this is basically a 3rd party LG Flashing tool. If they block this method, then their own tool will ultimately die with it.

This is a good method, thanks for writing this up.
I would like to add a few points....
I recommend you do keep your original system.img on your phones regular internal storage. If you encounter any boot issues you can then re-enter download mode and write the original system.img over the top of the failed root attempt. Use the same command from "step 3: root" but replace rootedsystem.img with system.img. This should still be on your phone from step 1 and will recover your phone from a failed root injection attempt. Note that it will not recover your phone if you messed up the dd command and overwrote other partitons. Be sure to use the right dd command and cut n paste to prevent seek/offset typeos.
I also recommend that you keep a backup of your system.img on your pc. When you run autoroot.sh in step 2 the copy on your pc will be renamed and patched. I suggest copying system.img somewhere else first, or re-copy it off your phone.
Additional credits to blog.lvu.kr. This is the blog of the hobbyist who reverse engineered the download mode protocol, created send_command.exe and gave it to the world. Kudos to you.

Oh nice! I wasn't adventurous enough to try it. I'll make a system backup and give it a whirl!
Very nice thread, thank you. The steps were short, few, and fairly concise.
I was waiting for something like this where I could modify my own image and I wouldn't have to wipe everything or replace it with a new image.
One thing you might want to mention is that if your phone is encrypted, you'll need to unencrypt it first.
Can anyone link me to some instructions on how to disable OTA updates for an unlocked/international H815T?

This is what XDA is all about. It tells you how to inject root into your OWN system image. it's the opposite of spoon feeding. it's about teaching members how to do things for themselves. Too many people come here expecting to be spoon fed and have thigns done for them. This thread teaches people how to do their own work, while learning something at the same time.
Good work OP! :good:

Thanks. I guess people don't know what XDA is about. Seeing noobs and others trying to spit on hard work when I used my time and device as Guinea pig. Also people don't know this is almost brick-proof because the system image if from their devices. Unless they use wrong commands but all here is just copy and paste. They see lot's of text and get cold feet. Anyways will be updating the OP with system images. If yours is available please share. If you see your image available and you have drivers and LG_root downloaded proceed to step 3.
The only downside is that I have to drag out my windows laptop instead of doing everything on the ubuntu machine I use at work.
But if that's the biggest of my problems then I don't really have a problem

I would also like to know this. You can resolve system by running the following. Note that this is for the H815T and is not the same on all variants.
# ls -lZ /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system
You'll get something like:
lrwxrwxrwx root root ubject_r:block_device:s0 system -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p47
Which tells you the actual block device (partition its on).
And you can see the size of that with:
# cat /proc/partitions
where you see:
major minor #blocks name
<snip>
259 15 4239360 mmcblk0p47
<snip>
However I dont know how to identify how large a block is or how to calculate the start offset in the main partition.
ok, it worked great
wasnt easy, since im not so familiar with using ubuntu, but all is ok
the explanation of the how to... was great and nothing lost
my H815L is now rooted
thx guys

I know it's kind of going off topic, but I figured I'd mention that Flash Fire doesn't work on VS986. It just goes to a black screen and sits there forever. I left it sit for almost an hour. I saw elsewhere it has something to do with automount, I'll have to mess with it further.
