Hey,
I have the Z5C now for over 3 months. The device is great but one thing is drivin' me nuts. The fingerprint scanner is just useless. It hardly works and when it works it's just slow.
I've tried everything scanning multiple fingerprints of the same finger, different locations and so on. But nothing helps.
Have you guys any tipson how to improve the fingerprint scanner?
I've found that I was not holding down my finger long enough. After I started holding it down a little longer, it seemed like it started working much better, nearly everytime.
I found that it sometimes doesnt work with smart lock. I'll try the fingerprint scanner many times and it will give me a failure, then I just swipe, and unlocks
Mine works just fine, as long I don't have really greasy fingers...
Working fine here as well. Sometimes it gets a bit greasy, clean it with a cloth and it works well again.
works fine for me too. Has trouble when my finger is wet, but probably any scanner would have this problem.
Working flawlessly here. It could be faster but at least it's consistent.
My only issue is also if my finger is wet. Otherwise, I have no problem with the fingerprint scanner. Works every time. Sometimes, too well. I've just picked up my phone, hit the scanner just right, and unlocked the phone without trying too.
No matter what I've tried I can't get it to consistently work. Washed the phone with soap. Cleaned the scanner with alcohol. It'll work for a little. Bit but then stop working. I must have more oily hands than most. But the scanner on the nexus 6p never failed me.
Wet or greasy fingers won't work... If the finger you programed into the phone isn't the same or similar state then it won't work..
I might program a wet or greasy finger as well So I get the same response when unlocking.. Watch this space.
Probably haven't helped washing the phone with soap XD... I'm getting vivid images of a glass of JD with a phone in it now....

Yeah that is exactly my problem. If my finger is slightly greasy it won't work. It's so annoying.
Pocketnow had the same problem with their Z5 aswell. My experience is preety much the same.

To anybody having problems with the scanner: is there a possibility that you have registered your fingerprints while your fingers were wet or greasy? (and now clean fingers are not properly recognized)
On another note, I noticed that the scanner only recognizes a certain portion of the finger and only in the correct orientation (even if I properly moved my finger during registration).
Mine is often too fast, unlocking the phone when I only wanted to check the time.
If my fingers are sweaty, it'll have issues, but that's to be expected.

That's exactly the issue. Some people just naturally have more oily hands, like myself. The fingerprint scanner should be good enough to account for that. This was never an issue when I used the iPhone 6s or when I used the Nexus 6P. I've only experienced a fingerprint scanner as incapable on the Z5C.
instead on focusing only on adding a fingerprint you should also note which type of grip you have when registering. Since the orientation of the fingerprint is recorded as well it seems. And finally add the same finger multiple times with a different grip and if you unlock using the same grip/finger combo as registered, i have had no issues.

Tried that as well. Most of the time I get "Finger moved too fast" or something. Or it's "Not recognized".

This is a great point; finger orientation matters, in my experience. I used to register my finger lined up with the sensor, but I got many unlock failures this way. Then I noticed that I would usually grab and turn on the phone with my finger at an angle. I retrained the sensor, moving my finger to the various orientations that I might use. This improved recognition greatly.
Remember also to vary your finger position slightly when you train, just like the phone asks you to do. There is little point of training it with the same 10 scans of your finger. The more views it has, the easier it can interpolate for recognition. (On the flip side, presenting it with 10 completely different scans would not work well either.)

Na, that doesn't work for me. Even if I try to register a new finger it often vibrates that it has registered my finger but the progress circle is not moving. So it's not reading it properly right at the beginning...
I've had no probems with the scanner- occasionally it takes more than one try but that's usually because of my finger/thumb position.
As above though I did make sure when I registered each figit that I moved it around to give the print in lots of different positions.
Fingerprint scanner works flawlessly for me I'm very impressed with it
Hi all,
For me it works well, i have some problems when my fingers are wet but it unlock the device faster than place a patern
In the other hand i try to use it with Paypal app but all the time it tells that fingerprint is not available, did you have the same problem with paypal app?
My bank app uses the fingerprint too and works like expected
regards
So much to love about this device, everything but actually switching it on.
Fingerprint reader position is poor, but even putting that aside, when i find it, it only works for me half the time. And it's far worse with a case as you need to cover the sensor.
Face unlock doesnt work for me if lighting is wrong and Iris unlock doesn't work for me half the time. Drives me mad.
And even when they do work they aren't that fast, either to operate or actually unlock.
Its a lottery. You never know if it's going to work or not. It's infuriating and a little stressful.
It extends to using Samsung Pay. I can't get the device to recognize me sometimes so it doesn't work. A lot of faffing around to get it to do something that other devices do reliably.
Then there's what happens when the device is locked and I get a WhatsApp call. You know it's there but the [email protected]@@ker won't unlock and when it does you have to quicky find WhatsApp, open it and get to the call. Unlike iPhone which treats it lime a regular call.
Feels like they rushed this device out, just like the note 7.
They say stability counts alot. Even with everything good about this device, as a daily driver it's so freaking frustrating that im starting to regret selling my iPhone and Mate 9.
.
*Insert price is right fail horn*
That pretty much sums up how poor the unlocking features are...
Teach your main finger you use as multiple fingers. Increases the accuracy. Also when you do it change the angle of your finger and use the edges if your finger too.
IRIS has been awesome for me, half the time don't even see the red light and it's unlocked. I would re-register that to ensure 100%. I find it to be the best in terms of unlocking the quickest.

I agree with you when it comes to the unlocking crap, however, WhatsApp calling works fine for me, I can pickup calls straight from the lockscreen.

No problems here...i can barely see my lock screen wallpaper it's so fast even at night/ darker settings... and my finger print sensor is fast because I'm a righty I start my finger on the far right and I slide it until I feel the first groove and I'm in... sorry dude
Sorry you have bad luck with the phone.
Mines u locks asap without a problem.
I can pick it up with one hand and toucb the fingerprint scanner and unlock right into the home screen. No delays no errors first try.
The irsi scanner is the same way.
The only time i have problems with the iris scanner is if im laying in bed on my side. My head is normaller tilted fro. The phone so my eyes dont line up.
But other then that i dont have any of those prolems you are having.
Iris unlock works great for me. But I also have a Pebble so I just use Smart Unlock.
iris unlock is nearly instant for me and I even wear glasses.
I use the trusted Bluetooth devices. Since I'm always either wearing my Huawei watch or my gear fit 2, my phones doesn't need go through a lock screen.
I use the fingerprint scanner otherwise, but I have huge hands so it's placement doesn't bother me.

iris unlock is working very well for me, with glasses on and in low light. for fingerprint security, i created 4 fingerprints (2 fingers each hand) and rotated each finger at least 270 degrees to get the best results. would have definitely liked the fingerprint reader to be placed in a better location, but i've adjusted now. :good:3KP

Instant for me too with fingerprint only. Just touch fingerprint with screen clear off and no AOD, works flawless.

I find the fingerprint sensor to be near perfect.
It unlocks EVERY SINGLE TIME. And it is infinitely faster than the fingerprint sensor on the S7E.
Location took a little bit of getting used to, coming from the S7E, but after getting used to it, I find it so easy to use. It's like second nature. I just put my finger there naturally, and I get it right first scan.
And I love that it automatically unlocks the phone once it scans my finger, without having to press any buttons.
To me, the initial reviews of the fingerprint sensor and other biometrics by the media were poor and rushed. They allowed no time to actually adjust and get used to them.
Most forums I use, XDA and the S8 sub on Reddit, most people actually praise these security unlock features.
No issues with unlocking for me. Best ever. My preference:
Iris
Finger print
Pin
Iris Unlock is what I use.
Instant unlocks in all conditions except direct sunlight (sometimes). When that happens I just use the fingerprint scanner / pattern.
Want an Iris Scanner tip?
Go to a completely dark room.
And I mean it, at night, zero lighting, you shouldnt be able to see anything.
Remove Iris data, and register them again in that room.
Do NOT open your eyes more than you would normally, hold your phone as shown in the instructions.
Voila. The setup conditions matter a lot with the iris scanner it seems, it used to always work 70% of the time until I did the above.
TIP 2: when using the iris unlock, look at the small crossed out eye at the top right of the screen
I only use the iris scanner for unlocking. Works great 99% of the time. It works so fast i dont even see the iris unlock screen. However, it fails to work when outdoors. When im outdoors i use pin unlock instead.
I stopped using the fingerprint scanner. Looking at it under bright light reveals light scratches

Ok I will give that a try!!
For me THE BEST!!! Turns on right away via Iris scanner... Fingerprint location is a little bit bad but I got used to it also. But I put Iris because it is almost instant.

Thanks for that will have to try the dark room thing, must admit it worked better at night in a room(dark) than through the day, was setup through the day. I get 50% off the iris scanner will have to try setting it up again latter.:good:
Hello! I have seen the ugly head come around that the scanner has not been super reliable. Now, I have the Tmo version and am on 9.0.0. Is that the reason currently? If not, It seems like the screen protector has smudges on it thus causing miss reads. If I try to wipe it off, it helps. Maybe we should be looking at a different screen protector? Thoughts?
Cheers
Joshua
I haven't had a fail to read yet... A few times it was slightly slower but still went through. Maybe try resetting up your finger. I know if my hands have been wet for a while my old phones wouldn't read.

I have reset it up a few times now. Tried even setting it up twice and that still didn't help much (to do this, I just kept pressing it again and again and it finally logged a second finger).

The more i use the FP reader, the better it seems to be getting. One thing is that it requires more pressure than my old Moto Z Play, but that's been an easy adjustment. Give it a little more time and continue to use all the fingers that you have stored. I mainly use my right thumb, and it works all the time now. My left thumb is hit and miss, so I'm using it more.
Unlocked the display 30+ times on 9.0.4 and it didn't reject my finger once. Speed varied each time if you place your finger/thumb perfectly aligned will unlock almost instantly
Was an OTA for screen unlock improvements already not sure what it changed though

Ill try pressing harder. Good idea!
I have the TMo version and I don't really get failures for my main/first finger entered. It seems that the more I use a particular finger, the better it unlocks. So the first finger is fine. The second was ok and is getting better. Third and fourth are still a mixed bag but getting better. My suggestion is to make sure you are enrolling them as you would be using them. So if you're going to be using a particular finger while cradling the phone a certain way, enroll it that way. If you will use that finger while the phone is sitting on your desk, enroll it that way. That seems to be the main thing I've found.
It seems the scanner isn't reliable on mine. It is really snappy after the initial setup. Then it loses accuracy within minutes after the setup. It doesn't recognize any of the finger 90% of the the time. I ended up either enter in the pin or use face detection. I don't understand the problem. my oneplus 6t is a tmobile.
I've got a McLaren on OS 9.0.9, and can definitely vouch for unlock instability w/ the left thumb.
Still have the screen protector on from factory shipment, so don't know if removing it would help, but not enough of a nuisance for me to want to remove it...yet.
I'm having an even worse issue.. A friend is able to unlock my phone without adding his fingerprint to my phone.. OP isn't taking this issue serious when I report this to them and they keep telling me to add my fingerprints again..
I have a OP 6T McLaren Edition, and just registered my right thumb. When I can't use my thumb, I use face recognition.
So far it's been reliable after a few weeks of use, but I've noticed you need to learn the right spot and the way you put the finger also influences its accuracy.
Something I've noticed...
I didn't use the "face unlock" when I first got the phone. Just used the fingerprint...VERY quick. Then, I turned on the face unlock just to see how well it worked, and was surprised how well it DID work (just not with sunglasses...duh). I've noticed, that if I wake up the phone,
with it anywhere near my face and try to unlock it with the fingerprint sensor (habit), the phone will stutter while I assume it is trying figure out WHICH way to unlock it.
Any chance that is the issue with yours?
If I have the phone laying on a table, no where near my face, and hit the power button, the fingerprint sensor is VERY responsive, but, if my face is anywhere near the phone, it struggles if I hit the fingerprint sensor.
Just throwing it out there...
Hmm.. I did notice that. I'll try disabling face unlock on my phone and observe it.
Anyone else with a similar experience? That's going to make me turn it off... Or am I just doing something wrong?
The sensor isn't as big as the interface leads you to believe, try registering multiple fingerprints using the same finger. Make sure your getting the edges of your finger print too.
I'm getting it every time. Make sure you get every bit of what you'd hit the sensor with.

I'm struggling with mine too. I've done my prints a couple times and I still keep getting press harder or couldn't read. Idk if the manufacturing of these could be hit or miss.
cant even reg my thumb, not sure if my skin is too dry, my hands are a mess. back to face recog.
I took the advice and did my prints again.. (3rd time) I scanned them more to the way I angle my thumbs and fingers. I was more thorough with the scan and it's reading my prints more consistently. Thank goodness!
got the same problem here .... s10+ exynos Germany
So facial recognition is a lot quicker .... but with the missing iris scanner you`re not able to unlock your phone in the darkness anymore
I clearly face the same problem,
The captor is not verry accurate ... I'm a bit disapointed about it tbh. It was 50% of the reason why I changed, so I can use fp to unlock my phone again (at the back, next to cam is definitely not a good solution)
Just received a update for the biometrics a minute ago for my unlocked snapdragon. It's definitely improved.

I'm having issues myself 1 out of 7 times, that update hasn't shown up for me, unlocked s10+
I actually followed the video on phonescoop.com about not following the instructions, as they are slightly misleading. It works better, but in general, I don't normally use screen protectors and I can definitely tell a difference, just using the phone. Also, make sure you have Touch Sensitivity turned on in display settings, which is supposed to increase the sensitivity with a screen protector.
Anyone try to use the fingerprint reader while it's plugged in and charging? Work ok?
I struggled at first. I went to software updates hoping to find one. Sure enough an update was there after I promoted it to search. It was better but still not 100%. Today however, I just realized it's been 100%. I attribute utter to me learning how to place my finger accurately. I think that's the biggest issue now. Is you need to just learn how it works.
Does anyone have an issue as the one in the screenshot
Like when trying to unlock using fingerprint we have the thumb impression over the ripple effect

Having no issues. Just did it.
Mine has failed to unlock with fingerprint a total of 1 time since I got it. Make sure to add the finger you plan on using twice and in the way that you will be comfortably using it usually. Also make sure to move your finger around when saving it, try to catch all the edges.

oh cool thanks for the info =)
The update I received yesterday was completely separate from the usual software update. It was a notification for update to just the biometrics after that it worked a lot better.
THere's something that you can do to make a massive improvement, after you get the software update that improves the fingerprint scanner. It worked for me.
Delete your fingerprints. Reboot into recovery, and delete the cache partition.
Then go back and add your fingerpritns again. Do it twice. Add two fingerprint profiles using the same finger.
For me, this changed it from being slow, and difficult to scan, to instant, and only needing to press my thumb very lightly.
Hi guys,
I noticed that the fingerprint scanner practically match the fingerprint once in twenty attempts. Phone at the moment is 1 month old, and I have installed the MIUI 10.3.10, respect to previous release the situation has worsened significantly, Anyone suffer of the same issue?
No it works very well, you have to register 2 or 3 times your principal fingerprint (wich one with very clean finger for exemple and others with normal dirt). And if you use screenprotector, register after installing !
I confirm it sucks. Either works or not on global 10.3.10. Mostly works when you at your desk, but in real life scenarios, outside, etc, it frustrates me not being able to open my phone!
I can also confirm that fingerprint is really bad. My previous phone unlocked instantly in 99% but 9T takes loooong time to recognize fingerprint and it does it in 40%.
Yeah, I returned the device because it was so frustrating (not to mention the wifi was not reliable either..). Thought I liked the phone, I will buy only one with ultrasonic/normal FP sensor till the tech is matured enough
I don't like this scanner too... On Oppo Reno was ages better. Also seems like it goes on stand-by, if I unlok after some time it is slow, but if I relock and unlock again it is faster. Same for popup camera
Mi 9SE a manage fingerprint settings disappeared
I really dont understand what going wrong, on my Mi 9SE a manage fingerprint settings disappeared at all.

The tech is new so the software sucks atm.
Some say that in MIUI 11 it is fixed.
I have the issue, after a few days/weeks the fingerprint dont work. So i have to delete the fingerprint and rescan. It works perfectly again for a few days. Any solutions? Yes, I use tempered glass.
Have you registered atleast 3 fingerprints for each finger and use the rhythm animation (makes it faster)
Also heard with tempered glass and the residual oils from your finger get onto the tempered glass and over time, the green light from the scanner difracts more and increases likelyhood of incorrect reading of finger print. If you're using a tempered glass then i suggest cleaning with isopropyl alcohol ever few days to remove the oils to avoid diffraction failure or get rid of the tempered glass.

In Screen FP have issues with Temperer Glass. After 2nd try I am Able to Unlock within 3 tries.
The scanner works superb and fast. Guys you should understand that this is new technology and the way it works it's awesome, as for the protection screen you should feel and understand the way it works if you place tempered glass, imagine that the scanner is beneath the glass already and it is darkened by itself and if you put another glass on the top of it that will be double glass so the scanner array has to pass through 2 glasses to scan your fingerprint, if you place FP on dirty screen or if your FP might be smudged then it is blinded effect for the scanner. And the other issue if you place the protection screen of low quality that can mess it up as well. When you are saving your FP try to press it a bit harder on the screen so that the scanner can photograph it more clear.

Sorry... but you are not quite right. Yes, it works superb... with light and without any glass.
It works mediocre on low light... and almost none with tempered glass and low light.
For a top performance device, it's pretty pretty BAD!
Worst: I've wrote to Xiaomi Support, want to know what answer I received? None, absolutelly None.

But it works very good after i rescan my fingerprint. But the fingerprint is just a camera under the display....So I dont think there is an issue with the tempered glass....MIUI11 doesnt bring any better updates for the fingerprintsensor
Updated and summarized in the next post
MIUI Global 11.0.3.0 Stable
No screen protector of any kind.
Fully new phone, three or for weeks old, not carried around (TG, I have another and better daily driver), just sitting on the table the whole day
I've never seen a mobile phone with such a useless and sh...ty fingerprint recognition
If I add two fingers (thumb and index), there is almost no way it will recognize one or the other
Only if I define the same finger five times, as five fingers (maximum number allowed), there a chance it will recognize but still I usually have to try two times or sometimes even more (sometimes I have to enter the pin eventually)
I tried by several times by deleting fingerprint and defining again, but still not reliable
Btw there was no better with MIUI 10, and no improvement upon upgraded (three weeks ago) to MIUI 11 - same sh...t
---
Besides, Smart unlock does not work either
Xiaomi provides only one option, Trusted (Bluetooth) devices - but I tried with three BT sets, and cannot add any of them under the Trusted devices list (although phone recognizes them, pairs with and e.g. plays music over those BT speakers or communicates with the BT smart bracelet)
The other three Smart unlock options are completely missing: Trusted places, Voice match and On body detection
---
Edit: Gloves mode is also missing (ofc, not for fingerprint, but once unlocked eg by face, for further touchscreen actions in the winter

Btw there was no better with MIUI 10, and no improvement upon upgraded (three weeks ago) to MIUI 11

There was no better upon OTA to 11.0.4 QFJEUXM but after unlocking Bootloader (maybe due to its hard reset), Fingerprint scanner now finally works pretty fine for me
Two fingers registered, almost always (still, not really always) unlocking on the first attempt
This scanner takes picture of your finger so in low light or dirty wet fingrer it becomes slow or miss to read finger. This is fine in good light and warm weather

Edit: Gloves mode is also missing (ofc, not for fingerprint, but once unlocked eg by face, for further touchscreen actions in the winter

While I don't doubt you have a problem, I am on the same release of firmware and mine works close to 100% of the time with no problems. The only thing I can think of is a manufacturing problem that you have that I was lucky enough not to get.
