[Question] Otterbox Case - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Probably a really dumb question but I'd like confirmation on this.
Otterbox is now making defender and commuter cases for Verizon's Droid Maxx 2 which is supposed to only be a rebranded Moto X Play. Same frame, casing and dimensions at least that's what I've read anyways. Is this case also for Moto X Play branded devices? I'm confused because Otterbox isn't saying its for both devices, just Droid Maxx 2.

I was wondering the same. I know that the incipio cases for the moto x play fit the droid maxx2 according to their website. So I hope it's the same for the otterbox.
http://www.incipio.com/cases/smartp...-cases/dualpro-case-motorola-moto-x-play.html

I would say so going by the fact that all the cheapy cases on Amazon.ca are saying fitts both Maxx 2 & X Play. So it would stand to reason outside of official word from Otterbox that it should be okay.

Hey, guys. Just wanted to give a little something back to the community that's helped me out so much. I took the gamble on the $60 after shipping for the defender, partially based on the discussion here. I can happily confirm that the Droid Maxx 2 Defender Otterbox does fit the Moto X Play perfectly.
The only issue I have with it is that the hard screen protector dramatically decreases touch response, but I don't know how typical that is of these cases, since the last Otterbox I owned was for the BlackBerry Curve with no touch screen.
Thanks for reinforcing my suspicion that the case would fit.
EDIT: I've also recently found out that Koodo in Canada carries the commuter case branded for the Moto X Play, even though it's not listed on the Otterbox website. I was told they don't carry the defender as of today, but it seems they're in the process of bringing them in.

Something else I'd like to add that I think is important:
I recently left my phone on top of my wife's SUV with the flashlight on. I was following behind her in my car. I realized this at approximately the same time as I watched my phone fall off the back, bounce down the highway at 90 km/h, onto the shoulder, then onto the grass while it was doing ninja backflips and disco strobes the entire time. I retrieved it from the grass expecting the worst and there was not a scratch on it. The screen was fine and I've been using it the past couple of months with no issues. 10 out of 10 for otterbox.

Ballistic nylon-backed model and cases - a word of warning.

According to VZW, not a single case listed on their accessories page for the Turbo will fit the ballistic nylon-backed model as of this posting. The irony is that searching specifically for cases for the Turbo with the ballistic nylon back yields a page with the majority of the Turbo cases offered, but in the product details for every, single one they are flagged as incompatible. Just a heads-up.
-e- I'm amending my post to help alleviate the concerns of anyone that might find it later. Reportedly the ballistic-nylon backed Droid Turbo fits in the following cases just fine:
Tech21 Impactology Classic Mesh
Otterbox Defender
Incipio DualPro
I can also add that I have my ballistic-nylon backed phone in hand and it fits in the Lifeproof Fre case just fine as well.
I saw that as well, but it was after I had already ordered one.
But to be fair it might be nothing beings the glass sceen protector says the same thing.
I should be able to say if the incipio fits on Friday
The ballistic nylon version is thicker than the others by 0.6mm. I didn't confirm that; someone posted it in another forum. It is heavier than the other models, though, so wouldn't be surprised if it was bigger.

0.8mm thicker and 7 grams (0.2oz) heavier.
Thx for the heads up, I was going to drive to the store and buy 2 ballistic nylon models but now I'll hold off
Also saw this about the nylon back:
Apsalus said:
It feels softer/less slick than most ballistic nylon that I've handled. Also snagged all of the microscopic burs on my skin, like a microfiber cloth. Caused a "nails on a chalkboard" sensation. I'm set on the 64GB though so I'll have to live with it.

Hopefully it isn't too bad and the fiber "breaks in" after while and sort of wears the rough fibers down or something.
0.8mm is not that much thicker, and since Nylon can be compressed I wonder if the cases will actually fit.
Just got mine, you don't want a case, it feels great lol
I wonder if it gets rough if it could be refreshed with a hot air gun. Basically it's like using a hot air gun or torch(!) to get the fibers to melt slightly so the fuzziness is gone.
I had a nylon holster for years that got fuzzy and did just that and it looked shiny and new again.
The cases fit. Tested at store.

The rep I saw tried an Otterbox on one and it didn't fit all the way. It may be hit and miss.
Otterbox fits
I just picked up my 64GB nylon and the Otterbox I got for free fits just fine. The Verizon store I went to just opened so they were having a $50 off "essential" accessories when buying a new phone. I don't ever use cases, but couldn't pass up a free Otterbox.
Who needs a case - running naked - thats the whole reason to get a Droid Ballastic or Kevlar -

Yup. I just put it back in the case to verify; everything clips down just fine and the rubber backing folds over into the grooves.
Cool. Good to know that some cases will fit even though they aren't specifically designed to.
I can confirm that otterbox defenders fit, we bought 2 droid turbo 64gb tonight and both are in otterbox defender cases without issue.
I can confirm that the tech21 classic mesh case fits the ballistic nylon back fine. Would have preferred the metallic glass but decided to go for the 64 gig model to help future proof it.
Lifeproof case
Really looking into this case. It's $89.99 at the store and the guy said my 25% off discount doesn't count towards it but on the website it's discounted for 25%. Anyone get this case? I'm really tempted to drop the extra money. This is the most high-end device i've ever owned and I would hate for something to go wrong. I also have the 64gb nylon-backed but I really want this thing protected.
Otterbox commuter fits the nylon 64 gig model perfectly.

I've been waiting to have a Moto X phone since long, doing a lot of things to try to have enough money. Finally I had enough to buy the Moto X 2014 in February.
I was always of those caring darn much for their phones, because we didn't want to buy a case or a bumper that would hide away all the careful design.
But today because of a silly accident, me taking my phone to check a notification, my friend raising his hand to grab out a handle, and there goes my Moto to the floor. I had never ever scratched a phone, and now this freaking Moto X 2014 is completely shattered, the Oled screen utterly corrupted, the touch layer totally outed.
Frak this thing, Frak Motorola, useless piece of design, I don't have enough money to live without the fear that I may break it again, because the designers can't make a phone that lasts without having a case.
Really? If you have a wreck is it the car manufactures fault?

Was this really even necessary? This is what happens when you drop phones that are almost all glass in the front. It doesn't mean Moto phones are garbage. I've seen more than enough of those terrible iPhone screens shattered but everyone praises their quality. That is just a risk you take when you don't keep your phone in a case.

One of the dumber posts on xda...
Try dropping that glass S6 or an iP6+ without a case on and see what happens to those.
Get a supcase bumper case. Dropped my 2nd moto x several times and also at like head height and still no cracked screen.

Does XDA have a button for the opposite of a thanks? Why is this post even here?
cool story bro.....
Next to time buy a phone with titanium screen
Although it wont display anything
But hey it will survive the drop
My 1st gen Moto X's screen cracked without being dropped, so I consider this one a major improvement. Don't drop your phone-->screen won't crack (unless it's 1st gen Moto X).
I don't ever use cases on my phones, so I'm always super careful. A couple of months ago I took my phone out of my pocket with wet hands (dumb, I know...) and my Moto X went FLYING. It ended up 10 feet away on a hard tile floor. Not a scratch on the screen or the back. Some fellas are lucky, and some ain't.
Why isn't this locked?

Question to Moto X owners - experience with wooden back

Hi all,
I sticked to the Sony Xperia Z line the last years and now time has come for a new mobile. To cut things short - the coming Moto X Style is definitely on my radar now. I love the possibility to customize its looks, and here comes my question to all Moto X users that have opted for a wooden back cover: What are your experiences in terms of durability and looks after some months of use? Would you go for the wooden finish again? I am a bit scared that the wooden back will look cool in the beginning and soon wear off and lose its charme...
Moto reps said during the launch event, that the 2015 backing will be better than the older models and more durable.
Does this imply there have been issues/complaints about the previous models?

Yeah I think I remember hearig a review that people had peeling problems and discolouration. But obviously Moto fixed any issues with manufactering defects so atleast you get good customer service.

I've had the 2013 Moto X with the Bamboo back for about 1.5 years and it has been great. It's not too slippery and I've had no issues with discoloration or durability. The 2013 Moto X had four wood options: Bamboo, Walnut Finish, Ebony Finish, and maybe Teak finish or something. I don't remember the last one. The Bamboo back was real bamboo and didn't have any issues, but the "finishes" were not particularly durable and would peel away from the backing. I don't know if they were real wood or just a laminate made to look and feel like wood, but they were not great quality. I think you can feel confident getting a wood back as long as you know it's real wood and not some cheap imitation. My guess is that after the negative feedback, they will use real wood for all of the backs, but I don't know. I personally am going for leather this time around, but just to see how it is, not out of disappointment with my wood back.

It must be real wood since they advertise each one has a unique grain pattern.

That's pretty bad ass.
Does anyone know if the backs are swappable afterwards? Or is this permanent after moto maker?

I too had bamboo back. It was surprisingly durable
speaking as a guy that works doing phone repairs i boubt it will not be changeable but motorola phones are always very difficult to work on. i do not expect it to be possible without significant experience. i just had to change a battery on an older x today and it was hell separating the back. and these things tend to be harder not easier on newer models https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Motorola+Moto+X+Back+Cover+Replacement/16971

Wooden Backs Durability

For those with the current gen Moto X Pure with wooden backs, how has your back held up? Has the wood gotten scuffed or scratched? Or have you used it without worries and it's remained undamaged?
I own a Moto X 2013 since over 1 year with walnut finish. It looks like new... I also had two Moto X Style with Bamboo and Charcoal Ash... Bamboo is doing absolutly amazing. It feels much better than the walnut (2013) or ash - which both have the same feeling.
Ash seems to be very vulnerable for scratches and fingerprints to.. It looks absolutly awesome - as long as you dont touch it
So if you cannot decide: Go for Bamboo - Really great

I had the bamboo on last year's model, and gave the charcoal ash on the MXPE. While the newer model doesn't have as much wear and tear, I haven't had any issues with either.

I got the charcoal ash and it came with a few scuff marks on it that aren't coming off so I think they're small scratches. I feel like the charcoal ash is cheaper and seems to damage easily. Considering exchanging for bamboo.

I actually did not realize it. My thread got moved by a mod. Guess they moved it to the wrong boards haha. I'll PM them to move it. Thanks for pointing it out!
Mine has held up really well, I end up setting it down on the back fairly often and have not noticed any scratches.

Glad to hear. I originally thought it would get scratched easily so put a shield on it. Then I realized that defeated the purpose of having wood so I took the shield off. Doing well so far for the past few days.

One month, charcoal Ash unprotected. Still looks mint, but I am rather careful.

I have the darkest back, I forget what it's called. I'm a carpenter and use the phone without a case. I am rough, but not careless with my phones and I can't believe how good it looks. It's basically mint. I put it in my pocket with change and toss it onto tools and tables all the time. I'm very impressed.

Dead Nexus... movin on

I had a spider cracked glass on my phone so I order the replacement. Had it for a bit but couldn't seem to find the time to fix it. Dropped it another time or two, the the digitizer went. Broke the ribbon cable to power/volume buttons. My beloved Nexus is officially dead. So I find myself holding a brand new replacment glass, a otterbox defender case, and I know i have a few screen protectors in a box somewhere. Couldn't find another Nexus 6, had no phone, couldn't/wouldn't spend the bucks on a pixel2, so I bought a moto z2 play. unlocked and not much bloat, so I am happy for a time. Sub $400 dollar phone, but ok features for a mid-range device. Had an motorola Atrix way back when, and it had a finger print reader on it. Missed it since then, glad this phone has it. So, good by to nexus folks. Mod Edit: no selling/trading on XDA - use www.swappa.com
peace out folks
Wait... they made an actual, real deal Otterbox Defender for the shamu? Or are you talking about some random rugged case for it? Got pictures?

no otterbox but im fairly certain it is in reference to this case https://www.amazon.com/SUPCASE-Full-body-Protective-Protector-Resistant/dp/B00OHFGMGU
I actually found that case for $5 at the thrift store, unused. The timing was excellent as my old case had just failed. Ironically, the failed case was one of the dual-material Unicorn Beetle cases from Supcase. The TPU separated from the hard plastic at the seams. Anyway, the case mentioned in the previous post was both a pain to put on and remove, and made the N6 even larger. Add approximately a half inch total to each of the three dimensions: length, width, and height, and be thankful Supcase included a belt holster, because you're going to need it.

ya i had it too it was a major piece of crap, ironically the 95 cent ones from china or wherever someone posted a year or so ago work great :fingers-crossed:
I went with an Incipio DualPro as a replacement and that worked well. So well in fact that the second thing I did with my Pixel 2 XL after purchase from Google was to head to the nearest Verizon store and pick up the DualPro for the P2XL.
My roommate uses the N6 now, but she didn't like the fact my DualPro case was in black. She got one in pink *rolls eyes*
