Looking for a hotspot enabled ROM - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Sprint and looking for a rom that is close to stock and has wifi hotspot enabled. Need something I can go back to when needed while playing with other roms when I have the time. Since there are several out there and me with little time at the moment, I thought I'll ask first.
Thanks

Insert "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" into your build.prop, my hotspot is working.
Or use these adb commands:
adb shell
su
echo "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" >> /system/build.prop
content insert --uri content://settings/global --bind name:s:tether_dun_required --bind value:i:0
Then reboot. Should work regardless of ROM

I have no idea, I stuck my StraightTalk (AT&T) SIM from my old N6 into this thing and when I attempted to turn on my hotspot it checked for provisioning.
Also, the provisioning pop-up still follows a Holo theme, yuck

That stinks.
I am in the camp that verizon is a turd in every aspect besides their network strength. It may be your sim. But I dont really know how the sim cards work. I still on the unlimited verizon thingy.

If you're paying for unlimited, the hotspot may be included in your plan (which would cause the provisioning to check out). Then again, if that was the case then you should see a Holo-themed window pop up saying that it's checking the provisions. Do you see that window flash by when you turn your hotspot on from Settings?

no I do not.
I also (at least as far as I know) do not have hot spot turned on on my verizon account. The Hotspot just works but it also just worked on my last phone also.

Interesting, that would lead me to believe your unit has provisioning disabled if that popup isn't there.

lg g2 on verizon.
Custom rom always just had the option to make a hotspot and verizon never checked I guess. Although I only use about 10gb/month on unlimited verizon so I am a lite user.

Nope, never will be as long as I keep using Nexii (Nexuses?). StraightTalk's AT&T service

Yes I want to leave verizon but I just can't in my area. The only alternative is ATT and they just dont have the same coverage here.

Carrier crap on phone

I noticed when I tried to enable WiFi tethering/hotspot it launched com.motorola.entitlement, and com.android.sdm.plugins.sprintdm (and I'm on ATT!)
And then denied me!
I can wait for root to come to this device, so I can remove those stupid carrier entitlement packages. This is supposed to be a Nexus device!

Do you specifically have a tethering plan? I have a grandfathered ATT unlimited plan. I used to be able to tether on my Nexus 5 just fine.
Logcat is showing that these entitlement actions are preventing me from turning it on...uhg...
Sadly, it seems that Nexus 6 is chatting up with the carrier before enabling the Hotspot feature. When I press to turn on 'portable wi-fi hotspot' I get:
- 'Checking subscription status. Please wait ...'
- Network Error / There is a temporary network problem that prevents enablement of the Mobile Hostpot function. Please retry later.
First of all, this is Google giving it up to the carriers. One of my reason to get a Nexus is NOT having to deal with the carriers. Then, I am assuming AT&T hasn't enabled yet on their end whatever system needs to be up and running so hotspot is enabled? I can do mobile hotspot with this very SIM just fine on iPhone 6. Anyone else having this problem?

Not that I know of. I only have the 3gb plan (formerly the 2gb) because I mainly use WiFi due to the terrible Att service where I live.

i believe the difference is that for this device you are able to fully uninstall the crap that gets pushed. not disabled, but fully uninstall. i dont have to worry abt that with the unlocked version. of course, you have yours and mine "leaves warehouse by november 21"
Doesn't work for me either. I'm on VZW.

This is not how it works. I got mine directly from motorola, I'm pretty sure is the same one you'll get from Google Play Store. When device detects SIM from a particular carrier it will install apps and configurations specific to that carrier. With T-Mobile you get their app account, same thing with ATT. This probably goes beyond apps and adds the checking for tethering in your account with some providers.

Again, this is NOT true.
The unlocked version will install apps during the setup process if you have an ATT/T-Mobile sim put in and you don't skip that step. The setup explicitly asks you to hold on for a bit while it connects to the cell network. Even if you skip the step, the tethering system will 'call home' to check if you are provisioned for tethering data.
This new way to bundle apps specific to carrier after SIM detection, has been widely reported elsewhere. Even when the ROM is stock unlocked, the setup wil pull down specific apps if it detects specific SIMs like ATT or T-Mobile.

I believe @indianajonze meant that a fully unlocked device lets you root, which then allows you to fully uninstall the app. If you haven't unlocked the bootloader and rooted your phone, then you effectively have a locked device. The Nexus 6 is not an unlocked device. It is an unlockable device. (At least the Moto and GP editions are... the jury is still out on Carrier versions.)

These are system apps, you dont see them on any screen. Only when viewing a logcat debug.
I checked the Google system images, these packages are in there too....
Its like one of the previous guys said... Google bent over for the carriers, and included this **** in the system image.
Once we have root, we can disable.

Yup, you're wrong. Please don't make assumptions if you don't have the device, and then put out those assumptions as if they were fact. I mean no disrespect with that...but since you don't have the device you probably shouldn't be telling people that *DO* have the device how it works.
All Nexus 6 devices, no matter where you get them, function the same way in this regard: Google has set up Android 5.0 to allow downloading of carrier apps after SIM provisioning. They talked about it at-length a few months ago. The Nexus 6 is the first device that carriers have supported this technology with, which means when you put in the SIM Android auto-downloads anything the carriers have set up with their provisioning package, and they can determine if it's installed into System or User memory...meaning some of it can't be easily uninstalled by non-rooted folks.
My Nexus 6 direct from Moto works just fine with tethering on VZW. However I am on a 30 gig plan, and not unlimited anymore...

Does foxfi work!!!?

On the grandfathered unlimited data plan Verizon.
There have been several articles saying that Foxfi would not work on 7.0+ without root. I'm hoping (praying!) that there is a fix. 2 Phones arriving tomorrow, but without tethering they will have to get returned.

There's no charge to use a hotspot on T-Mobile. I'm on the 6 GB plan with rollover, which as a heavy wifi user I have every month.
They will throttle you if you try to use your hotspot for big downloads.

For me the answer is sadly -No. Foxfi installed fine and does work in Bluetooth mode (Edit: USB mode working too). When I activate hotspot, it installs a certificate, attempts to turn the Hotspot on, then goes into a loop of certificate install, attempt to turn on, repeat. VZW UDP

Thanks for the info. Since OP question was for phones on Verizon UDP, I wanted to make sure he got an answer that applied to him/her. Hopefully they find a way around this for those of us on Verizon, but that probably will have to wait for root.
I saw a workaround people got working on the Pixel. Would anyone with a Verizon V20 be willing to test this?
Would anyone like to try bypassing the verizon tether subscription check by option 1: installing network signal refresher, refresh signal and immediately turning on hotspot while refreshing. or option 2: turn on airplane mode then off and hit hotspot icon before it recaptures the signal.

It was in the quote on my post. I had a feeling I didn't make that obvious enough so apologies. Its this: "Would anyone like to try bypassing the verizon tether subscription check by option 1: installing network signal refresher, refresh signal and immediately turning on hotspot while refreshing. or option 2: turn on airplane mode then off and hit hotspot icon before it recaptures the signal."
Pixel owners have reported option 1 working for them. Hopefully it can work here too.

I emailed foxfi and asked if they were working on compatability with the v20. They replied that foxfi software will not work with this phone. Did not indicate that it would work in the future. Not good.

From what I have seen fox fi only works on Samsung phones now. When I had my Verizon unlimited data plan. After an update I want to say about a year ago no Verizon phone that wasnt Samsung didn't work. My Samsung phones I had up to the point they took away my unlimited data fox fi worked flawlessly. So doubt the v20 would work.

Yes At&t......I will need root then because I'm unlimited data....This sucks......If I want to use my data by tethering, I should be able too. This is dumb
In the same boat with Verizon on unlimited. Foxfi works, but only via USB (cable connected) or Bluetooth (slow ~1 Mbps). I love this phone, but miss being able to use the Hotspot for the rare times I need it.
I believe there is a beta feature on the pdanet USB client on the PC side that will allow a hotspot generated from the computer attached via USB. Clunky but better than nothing if you have other devices that need access to the connection in a stationary setting for now.

Now that we have root, I wonder how we can enable this?
I use to just change a couple of numbers in buildProp on other phones (Rom Toolbox .prop)
Any help would be appreciated
EDIT:
Found the below info but I don't think it will work. I DID NOT try this but it is tempting.
4. Connect your phone to your PC and issue the below commands:
adb shell
echo "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" >> /system/build.prop
adb reboot
5. Now, install Terminal Emulator app from the Play Store [HERE] and launch it.
6. In Terminal Emulator, enter below code one by one:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
exit

Yeah I'm not entirely sure how we might be able to get it to work. I've tried adding dun to the APN - edited the build.prop and added the lines you put above into the build.prop file. Those worked to no avail.
I edited the line inside build.prop "ro.build.target_operator=ATT". I changed ATT to "OPEN", and that did happen to allow tethering. But from the devices I connected to my phone - they were unable to connect to the internet. It was almost like ATT was blocking service of tethering. I didn't try to do all of those edits at the same time though. Perhaps maybe then?

Yeah I tried using all three of those methods - but it seems like only the method of turning the ro.build.target_operator to OPEN avoids the "Authorizing" screen and lets the Tethering turn on. But while the phone is still able to access the internet, the other devices cannot access the internet - having DNS issues.
I'm curious if perhaps the "system/app/Entitlementcheck-" app retrieves a token to allow other devices to connect, and using "OPEN" makes it so the entitlementcheck application is not even used. Not sure entirely how it works. I've seen in other device sections, such as the Pixel, where someone edited the phone's own entitlementcheck app equivalent to let them use tethering (here). Not sure if it would be possible to something similar here.

I am on sprint. And i rooted my v20 phone. I am on unlimited also. But sprint gives me 5gb tether for free on my plan. Then they slow you down. The built in tether did not work after root. So i had bought a app called Wi-Fi tether router. And it works.

I dont have a way to download pdanet to my laptop because I have no WiFi so is there a way to tether my LG V20 to my Lenovo Laptop with only the Pdanet app on my phone???
I have tried Everything and I can't get tethering or hotspot so any help or suggestions would be Greatly Appreciated!! I used to be able to get it by changing my APN on my LG G4 but now that I have the V20, I have NOTHING... Im on crickets unlimited plan using an AT&T LG V20..........

I just did this and you solved one of my pet peeves but not my tethering issues.
The phones still connect to my phone however they have no internet while tethering.
What you did solve is (by changing the prop to NAO vs ATT) is removing the annoying carrier name on the left side of the screen and also removed the annoyingly large ATNT 4G symbol. Instead its a neatly placed, small 4glte icon.
This issue is still persisting even after changing the tether enforcement to 0 from 5 in the system xml

Any way to activate Wi-Fi Calling if you have a rooted device?

I just got me new Oneplus 5 and my carrier supports wi-fi calling but only on a very restricted amount of Android devices like Galaxy S6/7/8 so no official support for Oneplus phones but is there any way to force the activation on the 5 with an app or something else if you have a rooted device?

Wow, that sucks if it's true. Do you know if it works on unlocked versions of these phones? If it doesn't, it could be something the carrier added.
Just to rule out the obvious... You need to manually enable WiFi calling on OP5. It's a toggle switch in the "SIM & network" section in the settings menu.
If that doesn't do it you might try editing /system/build.prop and changing ro.product.brand and ro.product.model to a known working model.
No setting option to enable it is there on the OnePlus 5 but same Sim in an S7 has the option to enable!
I will look at the build prop
Let me know if that works.. ?

Tried the build prop changes for an S6 and it still did not activate the required settings for wifi calling!
Surely there is a way to do this?

I'm hoping this too !
IMS dictates WiFi calling configuration. Hopefully you can spoof the device into thinking it's an approved one for your network?
I have the same issue on my networks in Canada. It's restricted to just a couple devices and when I did the build.prop edits I got the options but when I turn it on nothing happens as in Canada we need to accept a user agreement for it and that never comes up for me to activate it. So I either need to do that on an approved phone or live without it

What did you edit in the build prop file to get the options to show up?
If you could give the exact entries that you changed and to what then that would be very helpful.
Thanks
I have EE WiFi calling on me 1+5 and I'm rooted? The device deffo has if because you can get a VOWIFI status bar icon....
I think I enabled it on my sim prior to root though.... Dunno if that makes a difference as maybe registers again IMEI? I don't see why root would make a difference though

It is not root making a difference it is you would probably need root to enable you to activate something on the phone if your carrier is not supporting the OnePlus for wifi calling!

If your carrier won't support WiFi calling then you won't get it. Simple as that mate!
Edit: My carrier EE doesn't officially support the 1+5

Which carrier are you on?
Also try this

Some people have reported it enables wifi calling as well.
This is a lot more in depth so may not work and you may brick your phone. (may work on the one plus 5)

Ok we are getting closer so thank you!
I added the following from the first post you referenced to my build.prop:
#ifdef VENDOR_EDIT
persist.dbg.ims_volte_enable=1
persist.dbg.volte_avail_ovr=1
persist.dbg.vt_avail_ovr=1
persist.dbg.wfc_avail_ovr=1
#endif
Then this allowed the VolTE and WiFi Calling setting to show up and I can activate it but when I try to make a call it still seems to go out over Cellular network and no icon in the status bar to say that it is active etc.
This is the details of my carrier and wifi calling instructions etc.:
https://community.meteor.ie/device-help-187/everything-you-d-like-to-know-about-wifi-calling-218595
I did not try the second post as it seemed to be very specific to a couple of carriers so any other ideas?

I suspect there are some firmware files missing which it needs to use wifi calling, you could do an adb log cat to a file whilst making. a call (you have to be tethered to your pc) so you can post the logs here to see if anyone can help.
You could try using Hangouts as it uses wifi for calling etc
I'm on AT&T and I got my phone a few days before I actually switched to it. When I went through the settings without a sim inserted, I know I saw an option for wifi calling and enabled it. Now with the sim card in there, there is no trace of this option. I will be watching this thread now, as I've been pondering paying for a microclimate, but if this gets figured out, then I'm good to go.

Note 8 hotspot hack - grandfathered unlimited Verizon

I found a trick that works to enable the hotspot if you have an unlimited plan with no hotspot included. It works on my Verizon Note 8.
You follow everything in the video, except you only disable the red "mobile hotspot and tethering " app. Not the others.
It helps if you have Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot in the quick swipe down menu of your phone. Once you set up the wrong passworded Wi-Fi all you have to do is toggle them in the drop down. It's easy and fast.
Let me know if the link doesn't work.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...CC4wAw&usg=AFQjCNGLD66UrxdFo9tyLyXax3CAc0inCg
No go. I just get this error message no matter what when the hotspot is disabled - "All apps associated with this action have been turned off, blocked, or are not installed."
On mine I have Wi-Fi sharing enabled in the hotspot settings and also make sure you only disable the one app, not all 3 like the video. Hope that helps. Not sure if it'll make a difference.
Attached a picture of the package disabler.
I thought I had wifi sharing on already, but I guess not. That did it, thank you!!
not sure if this will work for Verizon but I found this method on galaxy s8+ and works on sprint note 8.
Hotspot hack works here as well. Seems easier than the other method.
1. Download Shortcut Master Lite
2. Search for LTEfunctionality
3. Click on com.test.LTEfunctionality
4. Launch
5. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting
6. Add " ,dun " to APN2 LTE and EHRPD internet under APN type. That line should read default, mms, dun when you finish.
7. Native Hotspot should work. You may have to do this hack again if you update Profile.

I have a VZW N8 and nothing happens when I try to launch com.test.LTEfunctionality. I tried to modify the APN settings through ADB already, and that didn't seem to take either, so I think Verizon just has the APN settings locked up pretty tight.
Do you guys have carrier locked or unlock? I still have unlimited from 2009 and the hot spot works just fine without any of this on an unlocked version....

I'm on the locked VZW, but also still have the grandfathered unlimited.
If I knew that workarounds would be available for all the network specific features, I would have definitely preferred unlocked.
Though I would not have gotten anywhere near the deal I got for the locked VZW...
So in an effort to make this as convenient as possible, I made a Bixby quick command to perform the necessary actions.
First off, I had to install the app WIFI Prioritizer and set the wrong-passworded network as #1 priority, with auto switch on. My other wifi networks all have auto switch off.
Quick command as follows:
1- Turn off wifi
2- Turn on wifi
3- Turn on hotspot
4- Turn off wifi
The timing of Bixby's execution seems perfect, however, there's a big caveat...
It seems wifi-sharing is turned off every time after disconnecting from a wifi network (including just turning wifi off when connected to a network).
I have not figured out any way to have Bixby turn wifi sharing back on.
So basically, unless you never connect to wifi, the quick command won't work without also manually turning on wifi sharing.
If anybody has any suggestions to deal with the wifi sharing issue, please let me know!
I have the Verizon version of the phone. Which is technically unlocked but with the Verizon firmware. If it's like the vzw s8 then we should be able to flash the unlocked firmware to it and the hotspot will just work. But the Verizon firmware locks down the hotspot unless you pay, or find a hack around it.
Dr, so just to confirm you have the carrier specific locked version. That would explain why you need to do this work around.
I have a non carrier specific unlocked phone on VZW network which activates the hot spot just fine without any of this.
Only reason I'm posting is to help pin down who needs this mod.
Im also used to flashing the hotspot apps when I root a new phone, which is over of the main reasons I root however I don't need it with note 8.
Does an unlocked phone on Verizon still get throttled after 15GB of Hotspot Data? I had been using an S3 with Foxfi and never got a message about using Hotspot Data till yesterday. Was looking at possibly getting another unlocked Note8 to serve as a Hotspot if I wouldn't get hit after 15GB on Verizon's new unlimited plan.

Once I dl'd PDP from their page I could disable, but then I cannot select Mobile hotspot.
The best solution for Verizon phones is to flash the unlocked firmware onto your phone. Super easy and problem solved. The one downside is you will lose vvm and wifi calling, but I don't use those anyway. And you get rid of the Verizon bloat.

It is quite simple. Flash the Unlocked firmware on the phone using Odin/Prince Comsy's Odin, check the link below:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...m-n950u-u1-t3685884/post74087340#post74087340
Optional: Set up the Video Calling (VoLTE) by following the steps from that Youtube video:

Don't forget to give thanks to the guys from these threads who made those things possible.

@Proweedsmoker: thanks for your post. i relied on it when i ordered my unlocked note 8. i have an unlimited data plan from 2004. the phone arrived yesterday; it "only" took 2 weeks to arrive. i went to verizon to get a micro sim card (since the sim in my note 3 is the larger version). they activated it and first thing i did was turn on the hotspot to see if i could get wifi on my note 3. it worked perfectly. huge relief; no rooting, flashing or potential brick-making procedures. i'm loving this note 8 so far.

It's a great phone but I keep going back to the V20 because of my 3 main reasons: Hi-Fi sound, Interactive 2nd Screen and the ability of picking up a call by bringing the phone to your hear.
