So today I flashed my VZW Developer edition Moto X back to stock 4.4.4 to download the 5.1 OTA update. I got everything installed an am now trying to obtain root again. Since I have the Dev edition, my bootloader is unlocked so theoretically, I should just be able to flash superuser to get root, right?
Well, I installed my custom recovery TWRP and downloaded the lastest recovery flashable supersu zip file and flashed the zip. When I reboot and open SuperSU it tells my that SU binaries are not installed.
I tried installing both ChainsDD and Clockworkmods version of Superuser as well as SuperSU with TWRP and clockwork recoveries and nothing is working.
Can anyone help me obtain root again?
Thanks!
I flashed this in twrp and it work.

Thanks guys. Turns out the version of SuperSU I downloaded was not the latest version. I downloaded the beta version and that worked great. Thanks!

Would you be able to point me to a thread with the steps to flash stock. I haven't done this since I got the phone and it's true what they say. "If you don't use it you lose it." I just want to get rid of this constant reminder that I have an update to install.
Thanks!!

Anybody figure out to get tether to work?
If you are on Verizon network, all you have to do is add net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to your build.prop. You'll need root for that, and can edit build.prop with any text editor/ root explorer. I can confirm that it works fine with VZW LP 5.1. The benefit of doing this simple procedure instead of using a Xposed module is that you can tethering without having root or Xposed installed. This is especially useful of you plan on using Android Pay which will not work if the phone is rooted.

Real quick before I get started. It seems like option 6 is the right one. I am rooted really just for tether, root explorer, and call master. How do I check to make sure I didn't download Xposed? I don't think I did but I want to be sure first. I haven't tinkered with this since I got it.
Thanks again!!
how did you flash back to 4.4.4?

Android Pay works with root. In order to setup cards you have to uncheck "enable supersu" within supersu first, then setup your cards in Android Pay, then you can go back to supersu and re-enable it by checking the box.

option 6 only flashes stock recovery.
How did you tether? If you rooted to tether, you likely modified something. You'll need to undo that. Unless you used the Wifi Tether for Root APK, in which case you should be fine with just stock recovery back on there.
Are people getting OTA update on Verizon. It sure sounds like it but I've not got any notification

Yes they are, but its rolling out in phases or waves.. so it could be anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks until your phone gets it.
If you can't wait, copies of the OTA Zip files needed were posted in the "waiting room" thread, which you can copy to your phone, and manually install via stock recovery. (Of course just like all past OTA's, your phone has to be stock, stock recovery, no Xposed, etc or the OTA zip wont install)

I am using WiFi Tether. So option 6 will unroot my device for the OTA? Also I went to the motorola software image page and they only had KXA21.12-L1.26.1-1 available. I have KXA21.12-L1.26-3. Will this end up being a problem? I cannot find the recovery image for 26-3 anywhere... yet.

It will be a problem, I experienced it. Fortunately somebody in the waiting room thread posted a link to the stock L26 version of 4.4.4 and that got me my ota. With the L26.1 recovery image I couldn't get past the L26.4 ota on my DE to get the 5.1 ota.

I used the second link in this post labeled "here"
Here's good instructions for dirty flashing to stock, I used option 5:
http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-ReturnToStock.html
Once I had the 5.1 ota I ensured I had SuperSU 2.46 zip in my download folder. Then I flashed TWRP 2.8.7.0 and immediately rebooted into TWRP recovery and installed the SuperSU zip and had root.

On Chainfire's thread there is a link to a boot image for the MDB08K build of our phones, but nothing else. I personally have build number MDB08L and when I tried rooting the phone and flashing TWRP, I became stuck in a bootloop that I was eventually able to recover from. That was using the stock boot image for the MDB08L build number from Google's site.
My question simply is, how can we root any version other than the MDB08K build because we don't have a modified boot image of any other build. I may be wrong about this, but if someone knows the answer, that would be very much appreciated.
Yeah I want to know how we can do this with MDB08L as my phone went and downloaded and stupidly i installed it without thinking about root options yet, didn't know TWRP had got it worked.

You can use the modified K boot.img on the K, L, and M builds. See my guide:

BTW, Thanks a lot for the guides & other works you do, bro.
Awesome, thanks a lot Mr. White.
For the longest time while installing a new ROM or working in TWRP, I have been asked if I want TWRP to go ahead and install SuperSU for me even if sometimes the device is already rooted. Every guide and advice ever, has always said to ignore this completely. This remains true with Heisenberg's guide.
Heisenberg said:
Do not flash the version of SuperSU that TWRP offers to flash for you in order to give you root, it is not compatible and will cause problems. When you attempt to reboot out of TWRP it will tell you that it's detecting that you don't have root and it will offer to root for you, skip past this.[/b]

Heisenberg mentions it is not compatible. My question is why is this true? I flashed a 6P specific version of TWRP.
Also, are there specific circumstances where one would want TWRP to install SuperSU? To me it just seems like a handy time saver especially if you forgot to download it or something.

Root with marshmallow is different to all previous Android versions, it requires a modified boot.img. The most recent versions of the beta branch of SuperSU patches the boot.img for you, and you get working root. The version that TWRP offers to install is outdated and doesn't perform thief modification of the boot.img, flashing it will result in a boot loop. For the above reasons there are no circumstances where you'd want TWRP to install it for you.
PS. You could have just asked this question in the guide thread.

So I'm looking into rooting my Nexus 6P, I'm wondering if my build number (MMB29Q) is able to be rooted? Sorry, I'm really new to this. I keep seeing images for MMB29P but not sure if that is compatible?
Yes. Its possible. I'm on MMB29Q and rooted. Although I'm running a custom ROM with root built in. Systemless root is the way to go in my opinion. Read Heisenberg's guide in the general section. That guide is your go to reference for the 6p. He describes in detail how to setup your PC to unlock the bootloader and root the device.

I read that guide about the Systemless root. The only downside is that you have to reflash TWRP everytime since it's read-only? Is that correct or am I doing something wrong?

You don't have to flash it every time. If you want to update though you'll have to flash the stock recovery. Personally, I like to boot directly into twrp from fastboot when I want to make a modification.

When you first flashed TWRP did you select to keep it read-only or to allow system modifications? If you selected read-only that's probably why it keeps disappearing on you.
Also, it doesn't matter what build, every build is able to be rooted on a Nexus.

Not entirely correct. You can easily follow step 10 of the same guide and update to latest build with just a few fastboot commands.
Hi,
I'm trying to root my Nexus 7 using the Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit to install Kali. I'm following through the steps 1 - 4 but I don't get any prompts to install/update the file dependencies for Modified Boot.img, TWRP Recovery and Super SU. I have seen someone else have this option come up for them and they were able to update.
Basically I'd like to know if I'm OK to continue with the rooting process not having had this option or do I need to manually download it and run it? I don't want to risk bricking my tablet.....
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
you do realize that Wugfresh hasn't been touched since 2016?

No I wasn't aware of that.
Basically I'm finding guides on how to do what I'm wanting to do, but nothing that's recent. All I want is an up to date guide on how to root my Nexus 7 and install Nethunter lol.
most of the custom ROM threads also explain how to root & install their ROM's
